CNS staff gathers supplies to serve homeless veteransOn the National Day of Service, Sept. 11, the Helen Ross McNabb Center received a substantial do-nation toward furnishing Middlebrook Gardens from Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS), which operates Y-12 National Security Com-plex in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Employees at Y-12 provided housewares and cleaning supplies for the veterans that moved into the Center’s newly opened Veterans Housing.

CNS has a strong history of supporting Vet-eran and Military Services through the Helen Ross McNabb Center. In 2015, CNS’ monetary donation helped open the doors to two multifamily apartment projects to house homeless veterans with mental illnesses. Also, in 2016, a dona-tion by CNS contributed to the Center’s Military Services, which

provides behavioral health services for veterans, active duty mili-tary and their families at no charge. In addition, on the National Day of Service 2017, CNS conducted another donation drive for housewares to furnish the Center’s Veterans Housing.

Veterans Housing Ribbon Cutting continuedAfter the dedications, the ribbon was cut. Then, community part-ners toured the apartment building. The hope and excitement that fills the veterans’ homes was tangible.

The Center is so thankful Middlebrook Gardens provides a safe, therapeutic place for homeless veterans in need, and it is on the same campus as the Military Services Outpatient Center. This provides a unique, innovative combination of services that great-ly increases the housing residents’ ability to receive support.

With its new Veterans Housing at Middlebrook Gardens, the Center will continue to serve those who courageously served our country by providing access to the resources they need to con-tinue healthy, purposeful living.

The adjoining gardens and walking trail were dedicated in honor of Senior Airman Brandon Alan Hall.

The 10-unit building, called Middlebrook Gardens, marks the third Veterans Housing complex implemented by the Center.

The Middlebrook Gardens building was dedicated in honor of Charles Bur-chett, Sr., former Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett’s father.

Y-12 employees delivered the supplies to the Helen Ross McNabb Center’s Military Services building.

“The generosity of the CNS employees will make a significant impact on the veterans living in our housing units,” said Jerry Vagnier, Helen Ross McNabb Center’s president and CEO. “These

donations will really help turn the apartments into homes.”

Community events raise funds, increase awareness

The Ben Hogan Classic was on par to raise funds for our Military Services.

The Ben Hogan Foundation hosted the Ben Hogan Classic of Tennessee to benefit the Helen Ross McNabb Center and The First Tee on Sept.10 at Cherokee Country Club.

Of the proceeds, $20,000 was donated in support of the Center’s Mili-tary Services Expansion Campaign. The $3 million campaign is expand-ing upon the Center’s current Military Services mental health continu-um of care to add addiction services for active military personnel and veterans experiencing substance use issues.

“This expansion of services will increase military personnel and veterans’ ability to receive the care they need to return to positive living,” said Michael Waltke, senior director of outpatient mental health and recovery services.

Community DayAs part of Mental Illness Awareness Week, on Oct. 5, the Behavioral Health Awareness Coalition of East Tennessee and the Helen Ross McNabb Cen-ter presented Community Day at Market Square in Knoxville.

This annual, free event raises awareness, reduces stigma and provides information regarding mental health resources in our community. Community Day is designed to promote a better understanding of mental illness in our area. Attendees enjoyed live music, food, prizes, face painting and information booths by more than 30 organizations from the Knoxville area.

Approximately one in five adults in the United States experiences mental illness in a given year.

Trinity Health Foundation launches embeddedpsychiatry pilot program with Phase II GrantThe Trinity Health Foundation of East Tennessee awarded $150,000 to the Helen Ross McNabb Center to launch its embedded psychiatry pilot program.

This program is the result of a year-long Trinity Health Phase I Research Grant. In June, Phase I recipients were given a three-month period to further develop their projects. This year, only five large Phase II grants were selected to receive implementation funding.

The Helen Ross McNabb Center’s pilot program addresses challenges faced by individuals experiencing behavioral health issues in our community’s emergency departments. The Center will employ a psychiatric medical provider (MD or APN) and master’s level clinician and embed the positions at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital and the University of Tennessee Medical Center emergency departments to conduct psychiatric assessments, consultation services and safety and discharge planning. The project will provide quality care for individuals presenting to the emergency department in psychiatric crisis with a goal of reducing patient boarding time and diverting from inpatient hospitalization.
