Weekend to Remember

Music of Miracles

Hundreds of guests and supporters of the Russian Jewish community joined Chamah to celebrate their 61st anniversary at the New York Academy

of Medicine in Manhattan.

The gala event celebrates the humanitarian and educational programs Chamah undertakes in Russia, Israel and the US.

Chamah warmly salutes all of its sponsors who generously support its activities and in particular a special thanks to Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, president and founder of IFCJ.

Chamah Publishing House

Chamah has been publishing Jewish literature for close to five decades and Russian readers all over the world eagerly await each publication. The thirst

for knowledge of Jewish heritage and tradition amongst the Russian population has brought a great need to produce additional works. Amongst the works printed are "Ahavat Chaim" elucidation on theTorah, a special children's Passover Hagada with transliterations and a two-volume set of common questions and their answers on Jewish topics. "Samarkand", by Rabbi Hillel Zaltzman shares with its readers the clandestine activities of Chamah during the Communist regime impacting the Jewish world till today.

Victory Day

Over 700 World War II Veterans and their families attended

the 9th of May Victory Day Celebration at Chamah Centers in Moscow and Israel. This day marks Germany’s surrender to the Soviet Union in 1945. The ceremony began with a moment of silence commemorating fallen victims followed by the orchestra's performance of national and traditional songs, while veterans sang along with the children's choir. Proudly wearing their medals, veterans shared stories of courage, faith and inspiration. Also lending to the nostalgic atmosphere was the army field kitchen that was brought in for this particular day. Guests enjoyed a festive meal and special gifts were given out.

In spite of a terrible snowstorm that blanketed much of

the Northeast, the 5th Annual National Russian Shabbaton drew a sell-out crowd of over 1,000 at the Stamford Plaza Hotel & Conference Center in Connecticut. The Shabbaton featured noted speakers and award-winning entertainment which was a huge success. The weekend left an indelible mark on many of its attendees, none more than Marina Braverman, who met her husband Alex at the Shabbaton.

“We first met at a Friday-night singles event; that’s where the first connection was made,” describes Braverman, who was attending her second Shabbaton at the time. “We later met again through a rabbi who set us up, but that initial connection was made there.” “We all shared an experience, and even though we all may be on different religious levels—some more and some less—we were all comfortable with each other,” she says.

This Shabbaton brought together three generations: grandparents, who suffered the worst under Soviet oppression; parents, who emigrated and children, born in a free country and are now open to connect to their faith. Many of the grandparents had tears in their eyes, seeing their descendants so happy to be celebrating their Jewishness. For so many others, the weekend leaves life-long impressions and keeps them coming back.

Leonid Klizky, of blessed memory

W ith sorrow we note the passing away of Leonid Klitzky, renowned artist and painter. Leonid immigrated to Israel during the great Aliya from the former Soviet Union and chose to settle in Kiryat Malachi.

His art works and fine craftsmanship proudly adorn the Chamah campus in Kiryat Malachi. Having lived through Soviet Russia, Leonid appreciated the opportunity to live, study and teach art in Israel. His love for Israel, Jerusalem and the Jewish people are expressed in his paintings.
