Included in this brochure are the Spring/Summer instructional workshops along with our upcoming exhibition schedule and special events. I hope to see many of you here at the Center taking advantage of these different programming offerings. There are a variety of exciting workshops coming up, some new, some familiar -- but worth considering again if you’ve taken them before and want to revisit a technique or get a refresher. Take a read through the mailer to see what we’ve put together. Among the workshops you may notice a few familiar names as well as CCP staff in the mix. CCP has also brought in some new instructors and courses we think you’ll enjoy. We welcome Bill Gauthier, Sharon Lindenfeld, Patricia Miranda, and Corinne Rhodes to the Center. They’ll be teaching what we hope are new and interesting workshops for those of you wanting to try something new, among them you’ll find a Century Plate Lithograph workshop and a workshop focused on using natural materials for dyeing. We hope you’ll enjoy these additions among our many courses, but if there is something you have always been wanting to learn and you have not seen it at CCP, please let me know. Registration is due two weeks prior to the beginning of the workshop unless otherwise noted, and must be accompanied by full payment. If CCP cancels a workshop, all fees are fully refunded. If a workshop participant cancels a workshop one week or more in advance (except for those classes that require two-week notice), only half of the fee will be refunded. In addition, CCP can provide professional contract printing services for artists looking to produce an edition of prints. Artist Residencies CCP offers Artist Residencies to established artists seeking the opportunity to pursue their printmaking projects by providing time, privacy, equipment, and a creative environment. The cottage houses a printmaking studio as well as a compact, furnished, one-bedroom apartment, with central heat and air-conditioning. Wheelchair accessible. CCP Editions Club Each year, the Center for Contemporary Printmaking selects a prominent artist to collaborate on an edition of original prints, and offers these prints to subscribers, sight unseen. The Editions Club subscription program is an excellent way to start or expand a print collection. Subscriptions are $450.00 per print prior to the reveal. It will be a ticketed party including an hour long mix and mingle reception followed by an interactive theater performance where guests will be encouraged to participate as investigators or as potential suspects in a murder mystery. Additional details will be forthcoming. These artists were part of an invitational residency program supported by funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Grace Ross Shanley Fund. None of the artists chosen were printmakers, they were identified based on a combination of factors including the style of their existing art practice and whether the content or imagery would lend itself to being developed as a print. The square format was uncommon in art until the advent of 20th century abstraction. Rectangular horizontal and vertical shapes for landscape and portraiture, respectively, were, and in fact still are, the norm. The FOOTPRINT International competition challenges artists to compose in the square, pushing against the traditional format. FOOTPRINT International is held every other year, alternating with CCP’s biennial International Miniature Print Competition. I am eager to share with you the latest schedule of workshops and events at CCP. Included in this brochure are the Spring/Summer instructional workshops along with our upcoming exhibition schedule and special events. RELIEF MONOTYPECatherine KernanApril 17 – 20, 2018, 10am – 4pmTuesday-Friday, 4-day workshopClass size 4-8, All Levels$475 members, $525 non-members

In this workshop participants will use relief monoprinting to explore the unique properties and possibilities of Akua Intaglio Inks. Using carved blocks, artists will explore a variety of ways to print yielding a range of results. The workshop will include the woodblocks necessary to print and will cover how to modify inks, offset images, use ghosts, and viscosity rolls, as well as cut blocks, sharpen tools and registration techniques, and chine collé. Opportunities for “controlled accidents” and “calculated spontaneity” are encouraged to answer the questions of what, and how, and why, as well as who you are as an artist. Emphasis will be put on identifying and enhancing the synergy between each participant’s engagements with printmaking.

MONOTYPEMarina AnconaApril 23 – 26, 2018, 10am – 4pmMonday-Thursday, 4-day workshopClass size 4-8, Intermediate Levels$425 members, $475 non-members This workshop introduces artists to the basic fundamentals and concepts of monotype printing in an environment that practices newly developed ideas and methodologies. Participants will learn how to develop an image, how to transfer the image to paper, and how to print with emphasis on the development of each class member’s aesthetic concerns as well as exercises in color and color relationships. The workshop will begin with group demos covering basic oil-based monotype, moving onto more advanced chine-colle’ and Xerox lithography processes. During this workshop artists will also be working with multiple plates, second pulls (ghosts), stencils, wet and dry paper, and a variety of mixed approaches ending with a group critique.

SPRING FIGURE SESSIONNomi SilvermanApril 29, 2018, 10am – 4pmSunday, 1-day workshopClass size 4-8, All Levels$150 members, $175 non-members Join in CCP’s Spring Figure Session where participants will be using the same processes as Degas by studying and printing from a nude model. Nomi Silverman, artist and printmaker, will assist participants in creating beautiful monotypes from life. Explore the versatile nature of monotype by printing and reworking ghost impressions to achieve depth of color and composition. Oil and water-based printing are welcome.

COLLAGRAPHChristopher ShoreMay 9 – 30, 2018, 10am – 4pmWednesdays, 4-week workshopClass size 4-8, All Levels$425 members, $475 non-members This workshop will introduce the innovative medium of collagraph, a combination of collage and traditional intaglio and relief printmaking. The focus will be on the exploration and creation of plates through demonstrations and discussion of the endless possibilities which each participant can utilize in creating personal imagery. The main approaches of printing the plates will also be explored in detail including inkless embossing, intaglio wiping surface rolling and monoprinting. Given the accessibility of the medium, both beginner and advanced printmakers will be able to create and complete many prints in a short period of time with the assistance of the instructor.

SILKSCREEN MONOTYPEChristopher ShoreJune 8, 2018, 10am – 4pmFriday, 1-day workshopClass size 4-8, All Levels$125 members, $175 non-members Participants in this unique workshop will be introduced to the versatile world of monotypes utilizing a screenprint mesh as the surface to work on. Using watercolor paints and water-soluble crayons, you can create draw¬ings and paintings with a freeness and spontaneity unlike other monotype techniques. Through the workshop participants will learn basic screenprinting techniques such as registration, color blending and how to print on a variety of surfaces. The materials and process are essentially non-toxic and accessible to novices and advanced printmakers.

PAPER LITHOGRAPHY AND ENCAUSTICLeslie GiulianiJuly 21, 2018, 10am – 4pmSaturday, 1-day workshopClass size 4-8, All Levels$200 members, $250 non-members In this workshop participants will make mixed media work combining encaustic painting with transferred imagery using Pigment Sticks. Replacing traditional inks with Pigment Sticks yields a versatile palette of 105 colors. Paper Lithography is a printmaking technique using a toner or laser printed image as the printing plate by adding a solution of water and gum Arabic to the in order to transfer the image. Instructor Leslie Giuliani will present the best techniques for successful layering over a waxed surface. Participants are welcome to bring images of all varieties to test the bounds of this process, including drawings, illustrations and photographs. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will have acquired the skills and knowledge necessary to continue working in this process without the need for a pres or other specialized equipment.

GILDINGBill GauthierMay 3 – 4, 2018, 10am – 4pmThursday-Friday, 2-day workshopClass size 4-8, All Levels$275 members, $325 non-members This workshop is custom designed for printmakers wanting to use genuine gold or silver leaf in their printing process. Participants will focus on pre and post print gilding and will also have the opportunity to experiment with mica and metallic powders. No previous gilding experience is necessary, and the workshop will accommodate most printmaking techniques. Participants are expected to bring examples of their work and prepare a statement on how they envision using gilding in their printed work so that the time can be tailored to their needs. In this hands-on workshop participants will be preparing paper and printing images on the first day, using their original master plates and images for their work.

CENTURY PLATE LITHOGRAPHYCorinne RhodesMay 18 – 20, 2018, 10am – 4pmFriday-Sunday, 3-day workshopClass size 4-8, All Levels$375 members, $425 non-members This workshop will introduce printmakers to non-toxic Century Plate lithography - a new, sustainable and environmentally friendly process using re-grainable Century Plates and biologically-based, biodegradable processing materials. Artists who like printing with Pronto Plates will enjoy the richer tonality, reciprocity of mark-making, durability, ease of use, and predictable results that Century Plates provide. Those who prefer lithographic limestones will enjoy the similar surface texture created by hand-graining Century Plates, but unlike litho stones, these plates can be re-grained very quickly and easily allowing for increased fluidity and spontaneity in an artist’s’ working process. Participants will learn how to grain a new plate, registration methods and plate preparation, drawing directly on the plate with a variety of materials, etching, processing, and proofing on the litho press as well as how to clean and store an inked plate or re-grain a plate for a new image.

LARGE SCALE ETCHINGPaul DeRuvoJune 7 – 28, 2018, 6pm – 9pmThursday evenings, 4-week workshop-Class size 4-8, All LevelsIncludes 4 hours of studio time each week$325 members, $375 non-members Come utilize CCP’s new etching room sink and acid tank in this multi-week class! Participants will focus on taking a single large copper etching plate (approximately 18” x 24”) through a series of states, developing the image with a full range of intaglio techniques into an exciting, ambitious, finished work. Improve your command of etching, aquatint, spit-bite, and white ground, while exploring the exciting expressive possibilities of a larger format. Let the wide range of tones, deep textures, and painterly marks achievable on copper inspire you this summer. Studio access will be included for participants to continue working outside of class time.

MULTI-PLATE INTAGLIO Sharon LindenfeldJune 11 – 12, 2018, 10am – 4pmMonday-Tuesday, 2-day workshopClass size 4-8, Intermediate Levels$300 members, $350 non-members In this intermediate/advanced intaglio class, artists will explore making multi-plate color images. Participants will start with a drawing, analyze and separate out colors onto different copper plates, learn registration techniques to make sure the imagery on the plates line up when printing, practice color mixing and layering, and explore color proofing. The instructor will discuss the advantages and pitfalls of layering multiple plates, explore ink consistency, and use transparent base so that colors overlap and mix optically. These techniques create rich, beautiful results.

Paul DeRuvo, Rest- Awhile, Lithograph

NATURAL DYEING FOR PRINTPatricia Miranda July 13 – 14, 2018, 10am – 4pmFriday-Saturday, 2-day workshopClass size 4-8, All Levels$300 members, $350 non-members This immersive and exploratory workshop creates colors from natural dyes and pigments including minerals, bugs, and flowers, and employs a variety of water-based paint binders, grounds, and techniques. Artists will explore the creation and use of a variety of natural colors, such as malachite, cochineal, purple iris flowers, buckthorn berries, indigo, and oak gall focused on their use as pigments for use on paper for printmaking and painting. Supports include a range of hand and machine-made papers, fabric, and canvas; and water-based binders such as gum arabic, rabbit skin glue, PVA, egg white and egg yolk tempera.

REDUCTION LINOLEUM BLOCKNina JordanJuly 24 – 25, 2018, 10am – 4pmTuesday-Wednesday, 2-day workshopClass size 4-8, All Levels$275 members, $325 non-members This two day workshop is an exploration into the process of reduction linoleum block printing. The process involves alternately gouging and printing a single block to develop an image in overlapping layers of color. By the end, there is very little left of the surface of the block such that the edition can never be reprinted or created. This process is great fun and yields exciting results, rich in color. Participants will be printing on the press with the option of hand-printing, using water-soluble inks and Japanese paper. Each participant will complete a small edition made from 3-4 layers of color/passes of the block.

OPEN STUDIOPaul DeRuvoJuly 30 – August 3, 2018, 10am – 4pmMonday-Friday, 5-day workshopClass size 4-8, Members Only$125 per day, $500 members week Use this five day open studio workshop with CCP’s Paul DeRuvo to expand on existing work or brush up on an old technique. Whether your project requires all five days, or a single session, Paul will work with artists individually to achieve their specific goals.

SILK AQUATINT AND THE PAINTERLY PRINTJulio ValdezAugust 20 – 24, 2018, 10am – 4pmMonday-Friday, 5-day workshopClass size 4-8, All Levels$500 members, $550 non-members Participants in this workshop will produce easily reproducible painterly prints through the process of Silk Aquatint a.k.a Silk Collagraph. This is a non-acid alternative to etching, where the image is created by painting with a white acrylic medium on top of a black silk surface glued to a plastic board, to produce a wide variety of tones and textures. Once dry, the plate is then inked and wiped in the same manner as an etching plate and printed on an etching press. This workshop will also offer tips on color mixing, modifying and demonstrating the uniqueness of using water based inks.
