    JGSEE Environmental Science and Energy Scholars Rank High on Thailand Top 100 List of Published Authors

    JGSEE is proud to have 10 of the top 100 authors in Thailand ranked by publications produced in the �elds of Environmental Science and Energy from 2010 to 2014, according to Scopus, a leading bibliographic database owned by Elsevier. Prof Shabbir H Gheewala of LCSAL with 42 publications in Environmental Science and 29 publications in Energy, and an h-index of 25, is in the top 5 in both �elds in Thailand. He is JGSEE’s most cited author in both �elds with 311 and 300 citations, respectively. Two of his lab members, Dr Thapat Silalertruksa and Dr Sébastien Bonnet are also part of the top hundred academics publishing in the �eld of Environmental Science. Dr Sirintornthep Towprayoon of the AGAR group is also among the top 100 authors publishing in Environmental Science. In the �eld of Energy, Dr Navadol Laosiripojana of AFPL with 26 publications and an h-index of 24 is in the top 10 of that �eld. Dr Bundit Fungtammasan, Dr Boonrod Sajjakulnukit and Dr Chumnong Sorapipatana of the EEP lab, and Prof Surapong Chirarattananon and Dr Pipat Chaiwiwatworakul of the BEST lab are also among the top 100 authors of Thailand publishing in Energy.

    Renewable Energy Asia 2015: ASEAN Renewable Energy Market Development under Energy Price Volatility

    UBM Asia and JGSEE-CEE successfully organized the Renewable Energy Asia 2015: ASEAN Renewable Energy Market Development under Energy Price Volatility on 3 June 2015 at BITEC in Bangkok. The event aimed at providing a forum for participants to update and share their knowledge and experiences with regards to policy formulation, and technology and market developments. RE-Asia 2015 featured both plenary and parallel sessions with local and international speakers delivering talks on the following key topics, 1) Green Buildings: Integration of Architecture and Engineering; 2) PV Power and Grid integration; 3) Wind Power and Smart Energy Systems; and 4) Sustainable Bio-economy. RE-Asia 2015 was very successful with over 150 participants, from Thailand, neighboring countries and beyond joining the event.

    Visit of French Senators at KMUTT in Bangkuntien

    On 21 April 2015, French senators and Embassy o�cers visited KMUTT at Bangkuntien to learn about the activities on climate change mitigation/adaptation performed at KMUTT, including, JGSEE-CEE. To start the event, Assoc Prof Dr Bundit Fungtammasan, the Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation of KMUTT delivered some Welcome Remarks. Mr Gerard Miquel, the senator of Lot, introduced the French delegation of senators and purpose of the visit. Following this, an overview of KMUTT’s research strategies in the context of national energy and climate change policies was presented by Dr Bundit. A presentation was then delivered by Assoc Prof Dr Savitri Garivait (Chairperson of the Environment Department at JGSEE-CEE) to provide an overview of the

    climate change related activities performed at KMUTT. Finally, Dr Patrick Rousset, a senior researcher of CIRAD at JGSEE, talked about Franco-Thai collaborative research activities to combat climate change, also addressing challenges and ways forward.

    These presentations were very well received by the French delegation of senators. Following these discussions, the delegation was invited to join a laboratory tour to visit some of the facilities established at Bangkuntien, including, an ethanol pilot plant and a biogas (EcoWaste) pilot plant. During this tour, additional discussions on the possibility of Franco-Thai collaborative actions for COP21 were also engaged.

    Contribution to Research Arena

    Series of Seminar Workshops between JGSEE-CEE and Consortium Partners JGSEE-CEE organized a series of seminar workshops on the research program between JGSEE-CEE and consortiums universities. The objectives of these seminar workshops were to discuss about the action plans of phase III regarding the development of co-research programs between consortium universities and to specify the outputs and impacts of the co-research projects and programs identi�ed. Summarized information about the programs and discussions held are provided below.

    (1) Green Fuel Technology (GFT)On 7 May 2015, JGSEE sta�, including, Assoc Prof Dr Sirintornthep Towprayoon, Assoc Prof Dr Suneerat Fukada, Assoc Prof Dr Nakorn Worasuwannarak, Dr Komsilp Wangyao, Dr Awassada Pongpipat and Dr Supachita Krerkkaiwan, and members of the consortium partners, including, Assoc Prof Dr Nakorn Tippayawong from CMU, Assoc Prof Dr Suthum Patumsawad from KMUTNB and Asst Prof Dr Warinthorn Songkasiri from KMUTT, visited PSU to discuss, identify and develop joint research projects under the Green Fuel Technology research programme. GFT is designed to support the Alternative Energy Policy of Thailand. It aims at investigating and developing new fuels as well production procedures, including, the supply of energy feedstock, especially, biomass.

    (2) Energy and Environmental Technology for Sustainable Urban Development (SUD)On 14 May 2015, JGSEE sta�, including, Assoc Prof Dr Sirintornthep Towprayoon, Assoc Prof Dr Amnat Chidthaisong, Dr Thapat Silalertraksa, Dr Surawut Chongchote, Dr Awassada Pongpipat and Dr Penwadee Cheewaphongphan, as well as members of the consortium partners, including, Asst Prof Dr Kua-anan Techato from PSU and Assoc Prof Dr Taweep Chaisomphob from SIIT visited CMU to discuss about the SUD research program. The focus of SUD activities is on technology and policy design in the context of urban environment. A number of areas are concerned, including, (1) Energy Conservation in Buildings, (2) Transpor-tation Planning and Logistics, and (3) Waste Management. The program aims at contributing to the development of the concept of low-carbon city. The SUD program is divided in to 2 research groups, (1) Green Building and (2) Smart Urban Science. For the ‘Green Building’ group, the focus of the research is mainly on the development of sustainable building for Thailand including environmentally friendly technology design, economy, quality of life, and comfort. For the ‘Smart Urban Science’ group, the focus of the research is on environmental management and conservation in cities, which is a pathway towards low-carbon cities. There are 3 dimensions covered in this research group: (1) Urban Scale Climate; (2) Low Carbon Development; and (3) Sustainable Waste Management.

    (3) Value added product from biomass conversion (VAP)On 28 May 2015, Assoc Prof Dr Sirintornthep Towprayoon, Assoc Prof Dr Amnat Chidthaisong, Assoc Prof Dr Navadol Laosiripojana, Assoc Prof Dr Savitri Garivait, Asst Prof Dr Nakorn Worasuwannarak, Dr Thapat Silalertraksa, and Dr Pornlada Daorattanachai, as well as consortium partners members, including, Dr Boonya Channok from PSU visited KMUTNB to discuss about the VAP research program. Activities of VAP are focused on biofuels and chemicals production from agricultural feedstock in Thailand. Production based on a biore�nery concept is of central interest in collaboration with the industry. During the seminar, a brainstorming session was held to identify, projects and related activities which each consortium partners could contribute including expected outputs.

    (4) Climate Technology and Innovation (CTI)On 11 June 2015, members of the consortium partners, including, Asst Prof Dr Sudarat Tripetchkul and Assoc Prof Dr Usa Humphries from KMUTT, and Dr Chakrit Chotamornsak fom CMU visited JGSEE to participate to the workshop under the research program “Climate Technology and Innovation (CTI)”. On JGSEE side, Assoc Prof Dr Sirintornthep Towprayoon, Assoc Prof Dr Amnat Chidthaisong, Assoc Prof Dr Kasemsan Manomaiphiboon, Dr Dusadee Sukawat, Dr Komsilp Wangyao, and Dr Awassada Pongpipat as well as sta�s from the Earth Systems Science (ESS) of KMUTT, including, Ms Kanlayanee Fusuwankaya and Ms Supattra Simawan, contributed to the discussions. Following the meeting, it was agreed that the CTI program should be divided into 4 research projects, with already pre-de�ned objectives, planned activities, and expected outputs. The 4 research projects are: Project 1 Development of High Resolution-Grid Data on Climate Change in Thailand Project 2 Decision Supporting System for Crop Risk Management to Enhance Adaptation to Climate Extremes Project 3 Development of the Pollutant Dispersion Forecasts for Risk management Project 4 Impact of Climate Extremes on Water and Forest Resources

    CEE Workshop Phase III Activity Research ProgramOn 15 June 2015, an in-house workshop involving academic sta� from JGSEE was organised to identify the strength of the projects which can respond to the strategy of Thailand, including, the projects activities over the next 3 to 5 years. There were also discussions on the collaborations between consortium partners and JGSEE laboratories, expected outputs from projects and impacts for the country.

    Final ANEGER MeetingThe Final Meeting of the ASEAN Network of Excellence in Green Energy Research (ANEGER) was held during 25-26 May 2015 at Movenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket, Thailand. This meeting was held back-to-back with the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology (COST) meeting and its relevant sub-committee. The event was supported by the Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (READI). The meeting gathered Network members and external experts from Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Europe. They joined the event to review the activities under the Network framework and discuss future collaborative actions. The welcome remarks were delivered by Assoc Prof Dr Bundit Fungtammasan, Head of ANEGER and Dr Stefan Hell, Team Leader of READI.

    Kick-o� Meeting of the Bio-Energy System Analysis Project

    On 4 June 2015, the kick-o� meeting of the project entitled “Bio-Energy System Analysis” (BESA) was held at JGSEE. The BESA project involves collaboration between partners from Germany, including, the Institute for Industrial Production and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and JGSEE-CEE at KMUTT. Other partners of the project from Germany, include, the Clausthal Institute of Environmental Technology, the Institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Economics of the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, and the Trier University of Applied Sciences.

    The objectives of BESA are to: (1) establish a network for systems analysis of renewable raw materials and energies; (2) identify sustainably usable biomass potentials for designated regions in Thailand and develop techno-economic utilization strategies; (3) consider the integration into the energy system and consequences in terms of energy market design involving all stakeholders; and (4) re�ect how the political targets can be achieved leading to decision support for science, industry and politics.

    BESA is a 2 years research project with an integrated approach for the evaluation and optimization of biomass supply chains and the integration of their products into existing and new markets with 6 working packages. At the occasion of the kick-o� meeting, which was chaired by Assoc Prof Dr Bundit Fungtammasan, a brainstorming session was held aiming at identifying activities and timeframe of activities for each of the project working packages to which AFPL, AGGAR and LCSAL of JGSEE could contribute to over the next 2 years. Regular updates on the progress of this work will be provided in the next issues of the newsletter.

    At the occasion of the event, Assoc Prof Dr Suneerat Fukuda informed of the latest achievements obtained under the Network framework. Dr Stefan Hell, and Mr Alexander Degelsegger (a READI S&T key expert) provided updates on the READI’s activities and future prospects. Other highlights of the event included talks from Prof Christine Mounaïm-Rousselle, University of Orléans, France, on “RD&D for Clean and E�cient Engine Combustion” and Prof Martin Mittelbach, University of Graz, Austria, on “Past, Present and Future Development of Biodiesel”. Mr Simon Grimley, the Regional Representative of EURAXESS Links ASEAN, also delivered a talk on “Funding/mobility schemes“ and Dr Kanchana Wanichakorn, Representative from STI delivered a talk on “ASEAN Talent Mobility“ program. Knowledge sharing sessions were also held involving contributions from ANEGER members, and enabling discussions among participants of the event. The Network activities will be continued to ensure further collaborative work on research topics of common interests as well as an expansion of the Network to a larger number of member states.

    Contribution to Knowledge Platform

    Japan-Thailand SATREPS Project: DTF and TGA Training in JapanDuring 14-27 June 2015, Dr Supachita Krerkkaiwan and Ms Sasithorn Buranatrevedhya, who are both researchers under the Japan-Thailand SATREPES project, attended a training course on “Study of Pyrolysis and Gasi�cation of Low Rank Coals and Biomass using a Drop Tube Furnace (DTF) and Thermo-gravimetric Analyzer (TGA)” at the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) and Kyoto University in Japan.

    The principles and operation of DTF for combustion and gasi�cation of low rank fuels were studied under the guidance of Mr Satoshi Umemoto and his team at CRIEPI. Also, training on TGA equipped steam injection to investigate the kinetic for steam gasi�cation of coal/biomass was performed under the supervision of Prof Kouichi Miura at the Institute of Advanced Energy at Kyoto University. This training course was very useful, providing the skills required for the operation of a similar type of DTF rector which is planned to be installed at JGSEE end of 2015.

    SMOU Signing Ceremony - JGSEE, Phitsanulok Municipality and Seoul UniversityOn 10 July 2015, Dr Sujin Jinahyon, President of Naresuan University, Assoc Prof Dr Sirintomthep Towprayoon, Director of JGSEE-CEE at KMUTT, Mr Boonsong Tanthani, Mayor of the Phitsanulok Municipality, and Prof Dr Dong-Hoon Lee, Director of the Eco-energy Research Center, University of Seoul, signed the Speci�c Memorandum of Understanding (SMOU) for Joint Project on “Research and System Development related to Solid Waste Treatment”. The collaboration under this project will focus

    Visit of DG of MOECAF, Myanmar

    Contribution to ASEAN Community

    To strengthen the inter-institutional research collaboration between JGSEE-CEE and the Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry (MOECAF) of Myanmar, a delegation led by Mr Nay Aye, the Director General of MOECAF, visited JGSEE on 18 May 2015. At the occasion of this visit, Mr Nay had a meeting with Dr Sirintornthep Towprayoon (Director of JGSEE), Mr Uday Pimple (Researcher at JGSEE) and two PhD students from Myanmar at JGSEE, namely, Mr San Win and Mrs Kyu Kyu Sien. Mr Nay also visited the JGSEE’s research facilities at Bangkhuntien campus. The visit provided an opportunity to review ongoing activities concerning the project on “Forest Carbon Change”, and to explore new prospects for further research collaborations as well as capacity building activities in areas of common interest between JGSEE and MOECAF.

    Second Symposium of Asian Regional Branch of International Waste Working Group in China

    Assoc Prof Sirintornthep Towprayoon and Dr Awassada Phongphiphat attended the 2nd Symposium of Asian Regional Branch of International Waste Working Group (iwwg-ARB 2015) organised during 12-15 April 2015 at the Tongji University in Shanghai, China. The purpose of iwwg-ARB is to explore and strengthen networking among Asian researchers dealing with solid waste management, and raise awareness over waste production and management in the region. The work presented by the JGSEE team at the symposium was extracted from a project entitled “Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Reduction Potential of Solid Waste Management at Municipality Level of Thailand”. This project is supported by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO). Two papers co-written by Dr Sirintornthep, Dr Awassada and Dr Penwadee Cheewaphongphan were presented. The �rst one was on “Forecasting MSW Generation and Energy Potential from all Municipalities in Thailand to 2030” and the second one on “Future Planning for Sustainable Energy and GHG Mitigation Options of MSW in the Fast Growing Province: A Case Study of Chumporn Province”. The conference ended with a technical tour, including a visit of the Laogang land�ll & incineration facility, the largest of its kind in Asia.

    Contribution to Industry

    Dr Sebastien Bonnet contributes to the Biomass Resources for ASEAN+6 Forum organised by UN-APCT-ESCAP, TISTR, NSTDA and MOST

    During 9-10 July 2015, a biomass open research forum on “Biomass Resources Assessment for ASEAN+6 Countries” was jointly organised by the Asian Paci�c Center for Transfer of Technology (APCT) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Paci�c (ESCAP) in partnership with the Thailand Institute of Scienti�c and Technological Research (TISTR), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) of Thailand and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Thailand. The forum aimed at providing a platform for ASEAN+6 countries to share experiences, successes, challenges and best practices on biomass resource assessment in the region. It also aimed at brainstorming on the possibilities of setting up an “ASEAN Network on Biomass Open Research” (ANBOR) in order to enhance cross border collaboration on biomass research and knowledge sharing.

    Professor Shabbir Gheewala contributes to the Asia Paci�c Regional Workshop on Biomass Energy Resource Assessment

    The Asia Paci�c Regional Workshop on “Biomass Energy Resource Assessment” was jointly organized by the Asia and Paci�c Centre for the Transfer of Technology (APCTT of the UNESCAP), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) along with the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Royal Thai Government in Bangkok, Thailand during 6-8 July 2015. The event brought together experts from internationally renowned renewable energy related organizations as well as key stakeholders from countries across the region.

    Professor Shabbir Gheewala was invited by IRENA to share his experiences on biomass energy assessment, in particular related to feedstock availability, greenhouse gas emissions and water resources. Several countries including Japan, New Zealand, Australia, China, Indonesia, Nepal, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Pakistan, Iran, Sri Lanka and Fiji shared their experiences along with experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), UN-APCTT-ESCAP and IRENA. The last day of the program was dedicated to a hands-on training conducted by FAO on “Tools & Databases on Biomass Resource Assessment”.

    Business Direction on Biomass Pellet for Thailand and Gasi�cation Technology in the Industrial sectorJGSEE-CEE, the Vietnam-Japan International Institute for Science of Technology (VJIIST) and the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) under the support from the National Science Technology and Innovation Policy O�ce (STI) of Thailand, organised a meeting with biomass companies in Vietnam during 11-12 June 2015. The meeting was held as part of the ASEAN Biomass Project (Phase II) in which JGSEE and VJIIST are collaborating. The �rst day of the meeting was held at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology the second day at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology in Vietnam.

    At the occasion of the meetings, Dr Suneerat Fukuda of JGSEE, Dr Suthum Patumsawad of KMUTNB and Mr Weerachai Limpornchaijaroen of Power Pellet Co., Ltd., shared their experiences with companies on biomass technology and trading in Thailand. The meeting was a success with great inputs to the discussions from biomass companies in Vietnam. This meeting is expected to contribute widening opportunities for further collaboration between Thailand and Vietnam on this subject in the near future.

    As part of this forum, Dr Sebastien Bonnet of JGSEE-CEE was invited to deliver a presentation on “Thailand Perspectives on Biomass Resource Assessment and Open Research Network”. Presentations on a related topic were also delivered by representatives from other member countries of the region, including, Australia, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines and Vietnam. The event ended on 10 July with a technical tour of the TISTR biomass pilot plant and algal production pilot plant at Technopolis in Pathumthani.

    JGSEE-CEE organized a series of seminar workshops on the research program between JGSEE-CEE and consortiums universities. The objectives of these seminar workshops were to discuss about the action plans of phase III regarding the development of co-research programs between consortium universities and to specify the outputs and impacts of the co-research projects and programs identi�ed. Summarized information about the programs and discussions held are provided below.

    (1) Green Fuel Technology (GFT)On 7 May 2015, JGSEE sta�, including, Assoc Prof Dr Sirintornthep Towprayoon, Assoc Prof Dr Suneerat Fukada, Assoc Prof Dr Nakorn Worasuwannarak, Dr Komsilp Wangyao, Dr Awassada Pongpipat and Dr Supachita Krerkkaiwan, and members of the consortium partners, including, Assoc Prof Dr Nakorn Tippayawong from CMU, Assoc Prof Dr Suthum Patumsawad from KMUTNB and Asst Prof Dr Warinthorn Songkasiri from KMUTT, visited PSU to discuss, identify and develop joint research projects under the Green Fuel Technology research programme. GFT is designed to support the Alternative Energy Policy of Thailand. It aims at investigating and developing new fuels as well production procedures, including, the supply of energy feedstock, especially, biomass.

    (2) Energy and Environmental Technology for Sustainable Urban Development (SUD)On 14 May 2015, JGSEE sta�, including, Assoc Prof Dr Sirintornthep Towprayoon, Assoc Prof Dr Amnat Chidthaisong, Dr Thapat Silalertraksa, Dr Surawut Chongchote, Dr Awassada Pongpipat and Dr Penwadee Cheewaphongphan, as well as members of the consortium partners, including, Asst Prof Dr Kua-anan Techato from PSU and Assoc Prof Dr Taweep Chaisomphob from SIIT visited CMU to discuss about the SUD research program. The focus of SUD activities is on technology and policy design in the context of urban environment. A number of areas are concerned, including, (1) Energy Conservation in Buildings, (2) Transpor-tation Planning and Logistics, and (3) Waste Management. The program aims at contributing to the development of the concept of low-carbon city. The SUD program is divided in to 2 research groups, (1) Green Building and (2) Smart Urban Science. For the ‘Green Building’ group, the focus of the research is mainly on the development of sustainable building for Thailand including environmentally friendly technology design, economy, quality of life, and comfort. For the ‘Smart Urban Science’ group, the focus of the research is on environmental management and conservation in cities, which is a pathway towards low-carbon cities. There are 3 dimensions covered in this research group: (1) Urban Scale Climate; (2) Low Carbon Development; and (3) Sustainable Waste Management.

    (3) Value added product from biomass conversion (VAP)On 28 May 2015, Assoc Prof Dr Sirintornthep Towprayoon, Assoc Prof Dr Amnat Chidthaisong, Assoc Prof Dr Navadol Laosiripojana, Assoc Prof Dr Savitri Garivait, Asst Prof Dr Nakorn Worasuwannarak, Dr Thapat Silalertraksa, and Dr Pornlada Daorattanachai, as well as consortium partners members, including, Dr Boonya Channok from PSU visited KMUTNB to discuss about the VAP research program. Activities of VAP are focused on biofuels and chemicals production from agricultural feedstock in Thailand. Production based on a biore�nery concept is of central interest in collaboration with the industry. During the seminar, a brainstorming session was held to identify, projects and related activities which each consortium partners could contribute including expected outputs.

    (4) Climate Technology and Innovation (CTI)On 11 June 2015, members of the consortium partners, including, Asst Prof Dr Sudarat Tripetchkul and Assoc Prof Dr Usa Humphries from KMUTT, and Dr Chakrit Chotamornsak fom CMU visited JGSEE to participate to the workshop under the research program “Climate Technology and Innovation (CTI)”. On JGSEE side, Assoc Prof Dr Sirintornthep Towprayoon, Assoc Prof Dr Amnat Chidthaisong, Assoc Prof Dr Kasemsan Manomaiphiboon, Dr Dusadee Sukawat, Dr Komsilp Wangyao, and Dr Awassada Pongpipat as well as sta�s from the Earth Systems Science (ESS) of KMUTT, including, Ms Kanlayanee Fusuwankaya and Ms Supattra Simawan, contributed to the discussions. Following the meeting, it was agreed that the CTI program should be divided into 4 research projects, with already pre-de�ned objectives, planned activities, and expected outputs. The 4 research projects are: Project 1 Development of High Resolution-Grid Data on Climate Change in Thailand Project 2 Decision Supporting System for Crop Risk Management to Enhance Adaptation to Climate Extremes Project 3 Development of the Pollutant Dispersion Forecasts for Risk management Project 4 Impact of Climate Extremes on Water and Forest Resources

    CEE Workshop Phase III Activity Research ProgramOn 15 June 2015, an in-house workshop involving academic sta� from JGSEE was organised to identify the strength of the projects which can respond to the strategy of Thailand, including, the projects activities over the next 3 to 5 years. There were also discussions on the collaborations between consortium partners and JGSEE laboratories, expected outputs from projects and impacts for the country.

    Workshop on Flood Waste Management in SEA Mid-scale CitiesThe Collaborative Research Laboratory in Thailand (CRL), involving the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) in Japan, and Kasetsart University and JGSEE-CEE in Thailand, successfully organized a seminar titled “Capacity Development Workshop for Flood Waste Management in SEA Mid-scale Cities” during 17-18 June 2015 at Rama Gardens Hotel and Resort Bangkok. This seminar workshop is part of an APN funded project on “Adaptation of Solid Waste Management to Frequent Floods in Vulnerable Mid-scale Asian Cities”. During the workshop, participants learned about the basics of �ood waste management, evaluated the vulnerability of their locality and identi�ed possible preparedness actions to overcome this vulnerability. The workshop was divided into 2 days. The �rst day involved BMA o�cers and Bangkok district o�cers. The second day involved Ayutthaya PAO o�cers and municipal o�cers from Ayutthaya.

    Special Lectures by Professors Sugawara and Murakami from Akita University, Japan

    On 15 June 2015, JGSEE-CEE was pleased to welcome two Japanese experts from Akita University to deliver special talks at KMUTT. Prof Katsuyasu Sugawara presented on the topic of “Selective Recovery of Rare and Precious Metals from Secondary Resources” and Prof Kenji Murakami on the topic of “Thermochemical Conversion of Biomass to Gas and Liquid Fuel”. These special lectures were mostly attended by participants from KMUTT.

    Prof Sugawara and Prof Murakami are both from the Chemical Engineering Division of Akita University and specialized in Advanced Energy & Chemical Engineering, and Advanced Surface Chemistry, respectively. Their talks were held under the international collaboration project between Thailand and Japan called “Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS)” and funded by JST and JICA. This project involves a collaboration between Thai partners, including, JGSEE-CEE at KMUTT and PTT, and Japanese partners, including, Kyoto University, Akita University, CRIEPI and Kobe Steel, Ltd.

    Visit of Professor Lawrence Band from University of North Carolina, USAOn 22 June 2015, Prof Lawrence E Band, the Director of the Institute for the Environment, University of North Carolina (UNC), USA, visited KMUTT. During this visit Prof Band met with KMUTT & JGSEE Executives and Academics to discuss the MOU between UNC and KMUTT and review the UNC-JGSEE Study Abroad Program, as well as to discuss future steps, including, potential research collaborations.

    Following this meeting, on 23 June 2015, Prof Band delivered a talk on "Green Infrastructure, Groundwater and the Sustainable City" at the O�ce of the President building, KMUTT. This talk was attended by over 30 participants mainly from KMUTT. Assoc Prof Dr Savitri Garivait, the Director of the UNC-JGSEE

    Study Abroad Program, chaired the presentation and also facilitated discussions between Prof Band and senior academic sta� of KMUTT for potential future research collaboration in areas of common interest. The talk was also attended by Prof Richard Kamens, the coordinator of the UNC Study Abroad Program on the UNC side, and a batch of about 15 UNC students who are about to complete a semester of study at JGSEE under this particular program.

    Best Paper Award from 2015 AEDCEEJGSEE is pleased to congratulate Ms Thanyalak Taengchum, PhD student in Energy Technology, for her best paper award regarding the study on “Solar Energy: Resource Assessment, Photovoltaic and Thermal Application” that she presented at the 2015 International Conference on Alternative Energy in Developing Countries and Emerging Economies (2015 AEDCEE) . The event was held during 28-29 May 2015 at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Hotel in Bangkok.

    Seminar on Livable Nakhon Phanom to Low-carbon CityJGSEE-CEE in collaboration with the Nakhon Phanom Provincial O�ce and the Faculty of Science of Nakhon Phanom University successfully organized a seminar on “Liveable Nakhon Phanom to Low-carbon City” during 24-25 June 2015 at Nakhon Phanom University. This seminar aimed at sharing knowledge and experiences on approaches to low carbon city. The seminar gathered over 40 participants including o�cials from the local municipality and academics.

    In the seminar, Assoc Prof Dr Sirintornthep Towprayoon, Asst Prof Dr Pipat Chaiwiwatworakul, Dr Komsilp Wangyao, and Dr Awassada Phongphiphat, shared their knowledge on topics related to: (1) Low-carbon City and Guidelines for Sustainable Development, (2) Greenhouse Gas Reduction, and (3) Suitable Energy Management Technology for Local Movement.

    Best Paper Award from EMSES 2015The technical paper on “Comparing Di�erent Wind Resource Maps of Thailand” that was presented at the 12th Eco-Energy and Material Science and Engineering Symposium 2015 (EMSES 2015) held during 11-14 June 2015 in Krabi (Thailand), received the Best Paper Award under the Energy Technology Session. The paper was written by Assoc Prof Dr Kasemsan Manomaiphiboon (JGSEE lecturer), Ms Carina Paton (JGSEE MPhil graduate) and Mr Nosha Assareh (JGSEE PhD student).

    EMSES 2015 was co-organized by the Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi and Kyoto University (Japan) in collaboration with the Kyoto Institute of Technology (Japan). The event aimed at providing a platform for Thai and foreign researchers to present, discuss, and stimulate their research works in energy and materials science and engineering.

    During the event, a card technique activity was carried out for participants to investigate how to develop Nakhon Phanom into a low-carbon city, including, choices, problems and obstacles, and acceptance and participation of communities. Success stories on management and transformation of waste to energy and value added products were also shared. Participants were then invited to visit the MSW land�ll of Nakhon Phanom Municipality.
