October is recognized as Elder Financial Exploitation Awareness Month. Older adults lose a total of $36.5 billion annually to financial exploitation and fraud. Elder financial exploitation is most often committed by someone who has a personal trusted relationship with the older adult such as a caregiver, family member, neighbor, attorney, financial advisor, or even a pastor or doctor. Unknown scammers largely target older adults, too. The most common scams committed by strangers are lottery/sweepstakes scams, grandparent scams, charity scams, home repair scams, imposter scams (utility company, social security administration), and telemarketing scams.

To protect yourself from financial exploitation: • Take your time when making important

financial decisions and be careful whom you ask to help make decisions. Don’t be pressured into making hasty decisions.

• Never sign anything without fully understanding what you’re signing. Ask for advice from a trusted family member or professional.

• Do not leave your personal financial documents out in the open. Keep them in a secure place out of plain sight.

• Safely dispose of all personal identifying documents by shredding or tearing them up.

• Register your phone number with the Do Not Call Registry by calling 1-888-382-1222 or by visiting www.donotcall.gov.

• Be cautious. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

• Never give out your personal information over the phone or through email. Never share your social security number, bank account information, or any other personal identifying information.

• Never open emails or click links from unknown senders. If you are not sure an email is legitimate, look up the contact information and contact the source directly to verify the information.

Scammers will take any opportunity, even a worldwide pandemic, to come up with new ways to take your money or private information. The FiftyForward Victory Over Crime Program wants you to have all the information you need to keep yourself safe, especially during this time. Please click https://fiftyforward.org/technology/coronavirus-scam-tips-facts/ for helpful facts and tips from FiftyForward and the Federal Trade Commission to protect yourself from scammers who are using the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to prey on others. Additional drive-thru flu shot clinics added!

Now more than ever, it is important to stay up-to-date on your vaccinations, including the flu shot. The CDC recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October. Getting vaccinated later, however, can still be beneficial and vaccination should continue to be offered throughout the flu season, even into January or later. This month, in partnership with Walgreens, we will have additional drive-thru flu shot clinics at the following centers:

FiftyForward Bordeaux - Thursday, Oct. 8, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

FiftyForward College Grove - Tuesday, Oct. 13, 9-11 a.m.

FiftyForward Martin Center - Wednesday, Oct. 14, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Many insurance companies will pay for this so check with your health carrier. You must bring your insurance card and fill

out a registration form on site to receive the shot. You will be required to remain in your car and the shot will be

administered on your arm closest to the car window, depending on whether you are the driver or passenger. Please wear

a sleeveless or short-sleeved shirt.

Does the flu shot increase your risk of getting COVID-19? According to the CDC, there is no evidence that getting a flu vaccine increases the risk of getting COVID-19. There are many benefits from flu vaccination and preventing flu is always important, but in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s even more important to do everything possible to reduce illness and preserve scarce health care resources. For more information on the flu shot, visit the CDC’s page here: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/keyfacts.htm

• The deadline to request a ballot by mail is

(received by) Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020.

• The early voting period runs from Wednesday,

Oct. 14 - Thursday, Oct. 29. Dates and hours may

vary based on where you live.

Reporting Elder Abuse in Tennessee Abuse of older and vulnerable adults is against the law, and Tennessee is a "mandatory reporting" state. Most incidents of elder abuse, however, sadly go unreported. For every case of elder abuse reported to the authorities, an estimated 24 cases go unreported. If you see abuse or suspect that an adult is being abused, neglected, or exploited, you must report it. If the abuse is a life-threatening emergency, call 911. Otherwise, call Adult Protective Services toll free at 1-888-277-8366 or contact your local law enforcement agency. You can also report online at https://reportadultabuse.dhs.tn.gov/. If the abuse is occurring in a long-term care facility, call the Long-Term Care Ombudsman at 1-877-236-0013.

FiftyForward Victory Over Crime provides free support services to those 50+ who live in Davidson County and have been the victim of abuse, exploitation or another crime. If you have been affected by crime and need assistance, call FiftyForward Victory Over Crime at 615-743-3417.

Do you help take care of an adult with chronic conditions? If so, you are not alone. Over 43.5 million family caregivers

in America provide a vast array of emotional, financial, nursing, social, homemaking and other services on a daily or an intermittent basis.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational series designed to provide tools you need to take care of yourself. If you take good care of yourself, you will be better prepared to take good care of your loved one. As a participant you will learn how to: reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate your feelings, balance your life, increase ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources.

Classes consist of six, 90-minute sessions held once a week. Two experienced leaders conduct each class. Interactive lessons, discussions and brainstorming help you take the “tools” you choose and put them into action for your life. FiftyForward is excited support the family caregivers in our community and sponsor the Powerful Tools for Caregivers class in early 2021. We would love to hear from you if are interested in participating or would like more information.
