We avoid wood from large-scale clear felling. We prefer to promote forestry that embraces diversity and variety, both aesthetically and ecologically. All of the wood comes from Swedish forests, and information may be requested for all floors regarding the felling site and type of felling. Our requirements for purchasing wood are, therefore, often stricter than those required by the Swedish FSC mark. Spruce is a soft wood, that can withstand abrasion. When the end grain is facing upwards, it is comparable to the side view (e.g. plank flooring) of oak and ash. There is a big difference between spring wood (light) and summer wood (dark), and the annual rings are clearly visible. End grain flooring of spruce is suitable for pigmentation, as it accentuates the differences even more clearly. It is not noticeably discoloured when wet or dirty, but stains and dents are easily hidden by the surface pattern, especially if the floor is pigmented. Centerpiece Basic is very suitable for tough environments which experience heavy wear. All wood structures have good fire-resistant properties. Even solid wood burns - it slowly becomes charred and retains its original properties below the charred surface. It also produces a moderate amount of smoke in the event of fire. Centerpiece has fire-resistant properties corresponding to wood panels with a thickness >= 12 mm, without an air gap. End grain flooring also has good acoustic properties. When laid with open joints, the surface pro- vides a certain amount of sound absorption and sound diffusion, which affords pleasant room acoustics. Sound levels from end grain flooring are also low, i.e. the sound heard in the same room from a chair scraping along the floor, dropped toys, footsteps, etc. If the end grain flooring is glued with an elastic parquet glue, the sound level of footsteps are also lowered. This is the sound heard in the same room, the next room or the room below when someone walks on end grain flooring. Quality description/complaints We take care when manufacturing and packaging our end grain flooring, but sometimes errors occur. If you are dissatisfied with the flooring, please adhere to our complaints principles: • Contact us first! • The following obvious errors will be reimbursed upon return: The wood should never suffer from pronounced discolouration caused by drying or rot. However, spruce does have natural variations in colour and tone. End grain sections with large cracks are removed, but occasional cracks may occur, as packed end grain sections may crack in the packaging. Size deviations +/- 0.5 mm may occur. The thickness must not be less than 12 mm. Our floors are made of core timber, and the middle part of the tree, the marrow, should be present in each end grain section. The raw material for Centerpiece Hex is obtained from pure birch stock, that is managed so as to produce the highest quality wood. The forest grows on flat, green ground and is regularly thinned to ensure the stems grow straight without red cores, discolouration or other quality defects. All of the timber comes from Swedish forests, and information may be requested for all flooring regarding the felling site and felling type. Our requirements for purchasing timber are, therefo-re, often stricter than those required by the Swedish FSC mark.Birch is a classic furniture wood, which is very tough and of medium hardness. The word birch origina-tes from the Indo-European word, bhereg, which means shimmering, and the Scandinavian birch has a completely unique, light colour. Deciduous trees have a more complex wood structure than conifers. The birch has a ring-porous cell structure with diffuse annular rings (see illustration to the left), which allows the pigmentation to hide the natural texture, rather than accentuate it. Which means that if you want to pigment birch, you should therefore be sparing with the amount and always runs tests beforehand. When the birch is freshly sanded, the surface is milky white, but darkens to a warm brown tone when treated with oil and hard wax. The sanding greatly affects the appearance. We recommend 80 - 100 grain sandpaper if you want the surface to have a white pigment. Fine sanding highlights the annual ring pattern in a beautiful way, but closes the pores of the wood and prevents the pigment from penetrating into the wood and causing uneven staining.Birch is sensitive to water and becomes discoloured in the event of water damage. Take special care when treating floor surfaces that may be exposed to water; e.g. in a kitchen and/or hallway.

All wood structures have good fire-resistant properties. Even solid wood burns - it slowly becomes char-red and retains its original properties below the charred surface. It also produces a moderate amount of smoke in the event of fire. Centerpiece has fire-resistant properties corresponding to wood panels with a thickness >= 12 mm, without an air gap.End grain flooring also has good acoustic properties. When laid with open joints, the surface provides a certain amount of sound absorption and sound diffusion, which affords pleasant room acoustics. This is the sound heard in the same room, the next room or the room below when someone walks on end grain flooring.

Birch has a diffuse pattern with vague, rolling annual rings. The image to the right shows the cell structure of birch, at approx. 40 x magnification. The pigmentation of birch hides the wood’s texture, as the pigments are evenly absorbed throughout all of the cells.
