2016-17 UCA BEARS BASKETBALL • PAGE 2points last season and now has 1,300, which is 10th in career scoring at UCA in only 2.5 seasons (72 games). Ronnie Martin (1984-88) is 9th with 1,380 in 109 games. Howard was fifth in the nation in threes made per game (3.44) last season and was the top returnee in the nation. He was also one of only five Division I players who scored at least 36 points three times last season.

√ HOMECOMING: UCA had several coaches and players making a “Homecoming” trip to Arizona in their last game at Azizona State on Dec. 22. Head coach Russ Pennell has coached at three schools in the state of Arizona, including Arizona State (1998-2004), Arizona (2008-09) and Grand Canyon (2009-13). He also coached the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA in 2013. Associate head coach Anthony Boone was Pennell’s assistant at Grand Canyon and with the Mercury. Assistant coach Josh Lowery and his brother, senior guard Jeff Lowery, are from Phoenix and both played at Desert Vista High School and for Pennell at Grand Canyon. Junior guard Jordan Howard is from Chandler, Ariz., and played at Perry High School, where he was the state scoring champion as a senior. Howard’s father Chuck is director of performance athletics at GCU. Senior Derreck Brooks transferred to UCA from Phoenix College. Tyler Miller, director of operations at UCA, is also from Chandler and played at Basha High School, graduating in 2009.

√ IN-STATE GAMES: The Bears are 0-3 against in-state opponents this season after a 89-77 loss to Arkansas State on Dec. 16 at the Farris Center. UCA overcame a 14-point second-half deficit and took a four-point lead with 13:19 remaining but the Red Wolves (9-2) pulled away down the stretch. Derreck Brooks led UCA with 12 points, while Jordan Howard and Jeff Lowery had 11 each and Darraja Parnell added 10. Mathieu Kamba had a game-high 11 rebounds, tying his career high. UCA lost both ends of a home-and-home matchup with Little Rock on Nov. 29 and Dec. 10. The Trojans hit 15 of 27 from three-point range on Dec. 10 to win Round 2 of the “Rock N Roar Rivalry” 70-59 at the Stephens Center in Little Rock. Senior guard Marcus Johnson set an arena record with nine threes. UCA connected on 7 of 16 from beyond the arc and even led once in the second half before falling. Jordan Howard had 21 points (4 of 7 on threes) for UCA, while Derreck Brooks added 14 and Mathieu Kamba 11. UCA’s defense held Little Rock to just 39.3 percent shooting overall, including 9 for 34 from two-point range. The Bears were 18 of 21 (85.7 percent) from the free-throw line. In Round 1 of the “Rock N Roar Rivalry” back on Nov. 29, it took overtime for Little Rock to claim an 89-87 victory over the Bears at the Farris Center. Little Rock had five players in double figures, led by guard Marcus Johnson with 18 points (4 of 9 on three-pointers). UCA had four, with sophomore center Tanner Schmit scoring a career-high 22 points (10 of 14 from the field). Junior guard Jordan Howard added 19 points (3 threes) and senior guard Derreck Brooks had 17 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocked shots. Senior guard Jeff Lowery had a team-high 8 assists and Howard had a team-best 4 steals. The Bears, who shot 50 percent from the field for the game, went cold in overtime, making just 1 of 7 (0 for 2 on threes).

√ LAST YEAR: The Bears finished 7-12 overall last season, with a 6-12 mark in the Southland Conference in Coach Russ Pennell’s second season at the school. UCA finished tied for ninth place in the SLC. The six conference victories was one short of tying their high since moving into the league in 2006-07.

√ SLC HONORS: Then-sophomore guard Jordan Howard was named a first-team All-Southland Conference selection last season after finishing second in the league in scoring (20.2), third in free-throw percentage (87.6) and fourth in three-point percentage (42.8). He also led the league with 3.39 three-pointers made per game. Then-junior Derreck Brooks was named the SLC Newcomer of the Year after averaging 12.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game last season. Howard, who was also an SLC All-Academic team selection (3.74 in Marketing), was named a preseason first-team All-SLC pick this year. √ SLC PLAYER Of THE WEEK: Sophomore guard Jordan Howard was named the SLC Player of the Week and the American Sports Network (ASN) National Player of the Week on Feb. 8, 2016. Howard averaged 36.5 points in two games, made 12 three-pointers and was 15 of 16 from the free-throw line. He had a career-high 37 points at Northwestern State and followed that up with 36 at home in a 112-77 win over New Orleans.

√ NEW fACES: Head coach Russ Pennell welcomes five newcomers to the UCA program this season, as well as four players who redshirted last season. The new freshmen are Aaron Weidenaar from Bozeman (Mont.) High School, Darraja Parnell from Andover, Kan. (Central HS), Jared Chatham from Los Angeles, Calif. (George Washington Prep), Jordan Grant from Harrison (Ark.) High School and Brandon Vanover from Little Rock, Ark. (Arkansas Baptist HS). Chatham is slated to redshirt this season. UCA also signed three newcomers on Siging Day in November. Power forward SK Shittu from Rogers, Ark. (Providence Academy), center Hayden Koval from Prosper, Texas (Link Year Prep in Branson, Mo.) and guard Matthew Mondesir from Torrance, Calif. (Link Year Prep). Mondesir and Jared Chatham were teammates at George Washington Prep last year.

√ THE ART Of REDSHIRTING: Coach Pennell has redshirted a total of seven players over the past two seasons while the Bears dealt with APR penalties under the previous staff. In 2014-15, Derreck Brooks, Jeff Lowery and Justin Foreman redshirted after transferring to UCA. Last sesaon, Pennell chose to redshirt sophomore junior Ethan Lee and sophomores Thatch Unruh, Otas Iyekekpolor and Tyler Simmons. UCA will have a full complement of 13 players this season, with only incoming freshman Jared Chatham slated to redshirt in 2016-17. Unruh averaged 6.3 points and made 42 three-pointers (second on the team) as a true freshman, starting 19 of 25 games. Lee averaged 2.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in 26 games, while Iyekekpolor averaged 0.8 points and 0.7 rebounds in 23 games. Simmons, a walk-on, played in 10 games in 2014-15. Pennell retained only Lee from the previous squad when he took over in 2014-15. His first two teams at UCA have sported well over a 3.0 cumalitve grade-point average and the APR penalties have been lifted beginning with the 2016-17 season. Those penalties included reduced practice time and no postseason eligibility the past two seasons.

√ THE SCHEDULE: As has become the norm, UCA will play no non-Division I teams again this season, per head coach Russ Pennell’s preference. The Bears have one of the toughest non-conference schedules in school history, featuring games at Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, Western Michigan, Butler, Michigan, Morehead State and Arizona State, along with in-state matchups with Arkansas State and Little Rock. Wisconsin and Butler are both Top 15 teams. UCA will play only two home games the first semester against Little Rock (an NCAA Tournament team a year ago) on Nov. 29 and against Arkansas State on Dec. 16. The Bears will face teams from 10 different conferences, including the Southland, Big Ten, Big 12, SoCon, Patriot League, Mid-American Conference, Ohio Valley, Big East, Sun Belt and Pac-12. The Bears kick off the Southland Conference schedule on Dec. 31 against preseason favorite Sam Houston State at the Farris Center, the first SLC opener before January since the Bears joined the league in 2006-07.

√ THE SOUTHLAND: The Bears were picked ninth by the sports information directors and 11th by the head coaches in the Southland Conference preseason polls. Sam Houston State was picked to unseat perennial champion Stephen F. Austin in both polls, with SFA second and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi third.

√ ASSIST MAN: Coach Russ Pennell is in the UCA record books from his days as a point guard for the Bears. Pennell, who only played two seasons at UCA (1982-84), is still the career assist leader with 341 assists. His career average of 5.9 per game is also best in school history. Pennell’s 220 assists during the 1983-84 season is second-best, while his 7.6 average that same season remains No. 1. Pennell, who played his final season at UCA alongside NBA great Scottie Pippen (freshman year), averaged 7.4 points per game, shot 52.6 overall and 77.2 percent from the free-throw line.

√ WNBA: Coach Pennell got his first taste of coaching women’s basketball when he served as interim coach of the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury in 2013. Pennell led the Mercury to the WNBA Playoffs as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. Phoenix beat rival Los Angeles in the first round before falling to eventual champion Minnesota Lynx. Pennell coached WNBA All-Stars Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner.

2016-17 UCA BEARS BASKETBALL • PAGE 3HEAD COACH RUSS PENNELL

Russ Pennell returned to the Uni-versity of Central Arkansas in March 2014 as head men’s basketball coach, 30 years after playing for the Bears. Pennell brought not only 25+ years of coaching experience with him to Conway, but also a passion for the game of basketball and a commitment to the teaching and molding of young men. Pennell looks to bring stability and success to a program that has struggled since moving to NCAA Division I in 2006-07. Pennell, who led the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference in as-

sists as a senior at UCA in 1983-84 with an 8.2 average, coached the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA in 2013. He was the head men’s basketball coach at Grand Canyon University from 2009 to 2013, leading the Antelopes to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments and an overall record of 72-44. The Antelopes were 42-16 from 2011-2013. Pennell was the interim head coach at Arizona in 2008-09, replac-ing Hall of Famer Lute Olson. He led the Wildcats to 21 victores and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. That season, Arizona had victories over No. 4 Gonzaga, No. 6 UCLA, No. 23 Washington, No. 25 Utah and perennial powerhouse Kansas. Prior to his stint at Arizona, Pennell founded the Arizona Premier Basketball Academy, a skill-developing academy for boys and girls ages 8-18. From 1998 to 2004, Pennell was an assistant coach at Arizona State under Rob Evans, helping the Sun Devils to four postseason appearances. Pennell was also an assistant coach on Evan’s staff at Ole Miss from 1992-98, helping the Rebels win consecutive SEC West titles and reach a national ranking as high as No. 10. Prior to Ole Miss, Pennell was an assistant to legendary coach Eddie Sutton at Oklahoma State from 1990-92. The Cowboys reached back-to-back Sweet 16s and reached No. 2 in the national polls. Pennell transferred to UCA after two seasons at the University of Arkansas. Pennell holds the career assist record at UCA with 341 and is second in season assists with 220 in 1983-84. His career assist average is 5.9 per game and also a school record. Pennell was a 77.2 percent free-throw shooter and a 52.6 percent field-goal shooter during his UCA career. Pennell is married to the former Julie Smith and they have two daughters, Morgan and Emily.

BEAR HISTORY... RAGS TO RICHES - UCA’s most famous athletic alumnus is SCOTTIE PIPPEN of Chicago Bulls fame. Pippen may have one of the greatest rags-to-riches stories in the history of sports. The youngest of 11 children, Pippen was only an average high school player (6-1, 145) at tiny Class B Hamburg (Ark. ) High School in the southeast corner of Arkansas. He was allowed to walk on as a manager at UCA as a favor to his high school coach Donald Wayne, who had played for UCA Coach Don Dyer. He earned a scholarship as a player early in his freshman year when the team lost several team members. He quickly grew to 6-7 by his sophomore year and earned first-team NAIA All-America honors as a junior and senior, averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds as a senior. After two stunning pre-draft camps, he was taken as the No. 5 lottery pick in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Seattle Supersonics, who turned around and traded his rights to the Chicago Bulls. The rest is history as Pippen, teaming with the immortal Michael Jordan, won three consecutive NBA championships from 1991-93, and three more from 1996-98. He was an NBA All-Star 11 times and was named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players of all time in 1997. He was a member of the original Dream Team which dominated the 1992 Summer Olympic Games and was also a member of the 1996 Olympic gold medal squad. His UCA jersey was retired in 2010. He was also recently inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

THE MOVE TO D-I - The University of Central Arkansas made the four-year transition from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I, begin-ning in 2006-07. The NCAA requires programs making the move up to Division I to go through a four-year waiting period where no athletic teams are eligible for postseason play. UCA men’s basketball became eligible for postseason competition on the conference and national levels beginning with the 2010-11 season. The Bears were eligible to win the Southland Conference regular season divisional title during the transition period but could not ad-vance to the SLC postseason tournament because of the automatic qualifier stipulation that the tournament enjoys. AffILIATION - UCA, a former member of the Gulf South Conference at the D-II level, became an official member of the Southland Conference on July 1, 2006. UCA was the only conference university from a state other than Texas or Louisiana until Oral Roberts joined the conference in 2012-13. ORU has since returned to the Summit League. The other 12 schools in the SLC are spread throughout those two states, leaving UCA on the extreme northern end of the league geographically. UCA’s closest conference trips are five hours to either Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas, or to Northwestern State in Natchi-toches, La.

IN THE PAST - The UCA Bears have a rich postseason history dating back to their NAIA days. The Bears played in back-to-back NAIA national championship games in 1990-91 and 1991-92 against the same Oklahoma City University team. OCU, featuring former Kentucky player Eric Manuel, got the best of the Bears both times, The first year was a 74-71 win for OCU; the second was an 82-73 overtime win. Both games were played at Kansas City’s Kemper Arena. UCA made one national tournament appearance during its NCAA D-II years. The Bears made the 2005 NCAA South Regional and advanced to the second round before losing to Lynn University.
