The last few weeks at CBS we have had some spectacular moments! We had the best
snowman making day of the century with a record breaking 22 different snowmen being
created on the playground within a 24-hour period, we welcomed some furry new friends
into our classrooms, we engaged with people in the community that we haven’t been able
to engage with in months, we learned that wearing a mask isn’t as bad as we thought it
might be, but most importantly we learned that we can get through pretty much any-
thing. On any given day if you could walk through the halls of CBS you will hear lots of
chatter and laughter, you will see lots of smiles (okay, well not actually see smiles because
of the masks, but you get to know what eye-smiles look like pretty quickly), and you
might even be lucky enough to smell the aroma of fresh baked cookies wafting from the
Home Ec. lab while the Entrepreneurship class tests its latest batches!
We have also had a few challenging moments too. One little girl on the playground said
it best - “Ms. Baldwin I just hate Covid. I want to hug you, but I know I can’t, and I just
hate that”. You are right my little friend, there are parts of this that suck. We have had to
learn to Zoom pretty quickly as a group, we have had to change how we interact with
some of our favourite people, and yes, we have had to rethink how we give ‘hugs’. But
despite the challenges we will continue to check in on each other just to see how every-
one is doing, we will continue to find ways to learn and connect and show we care, and
we can all make sure that at the end of each day we walk away knowing that we tried our
best to make someone else’s day a little better. The challenges don’t have to define us but
how we deal with them surely will.
So, at CBS this December we are going to enjoy the lights that so many people in the
community have put up for all of us to enjoy, we are going to make a point to ‘visit’ and
connect with our friends in a safe ways – especially those who can’t make it outside them-
selves, and we are going to deck our halls so that we all feel a little more jolly. Inside the
walls of our school this December, we are going to continue to read and write and love all
things math! There are many more good things than bad in this place and we plan to en-
joy every last one of them.

The end of the month just sneaks right up on me! November has brought lots of
fun and activity to the Pre-K classroom. Here are a few highlights:
We have all had our share of ‘donuts’ in the donut shop.
We were honoured to take part in the Remembrance Day activities, especially walking with the Legion Colour party to
lay our poppies we made.
The ambulance visit was great and was the last of our Community Helper visits.
Visiting with Theodore the Guinea pig was so great!
And of course the snow!
I know we say the months go by fast, but this one was especially fast! I enjoyed visiting with many families for our digital
SLC’s.
Looking forward to December! Watch for us around town as we take advantage of the nice weather.
Ms. Hamre and Mrs. Hallborg
Whew! November flew by (I know I
say that every month, but November
really did!). I enjoyed talking to the
families for SLC, thank you for your time. We have been enjoying
‘Humphrey the Hamster’ book and zoomed in with Ivermain to chat with
them. We look forward to doing this more. The snow has been a big hit! So
much fun making snowmen and tracks. All month we have been reading
Pete the Cat books and have our favorites. Besides the fun stuff, we have
been building on our letter sounds. In Math we have been working on 5
frames and counting 0-5. This science loving group has enjoyed learning
about hamsters and guinea pigs.

On Wednesday November 28th, Mrs. Menzies and Mrs. Hallborg
enjoyed presenting to emergent reader’s parents via zoom.
Here are a few tips shared:
Let your child see you read, not just on a phone
Expose your children to books young, encourage them to handle them, flip pages,
Make reading fun
Explain ‘big words’ as you read them.
Sing silly rhyming songs
Make word riddles- I spy something that rhymes with bat
Most importantly, enjoy reading with your children.

The 5/6 room have been working hard through the challenges that COVID has brought. In ELA we worked on strategies to help improve our reading comprehension using non-fiction texts. We also started reading “The World
According to Humphrey” and are thoroughly enjoying it! Our class has started our pen pal letters to commu-nity members, staff, as well as people living Ivermain and the manor. Thanks to all of you for engaging with us!
We are nearing the end of our most recent math unit in Grade 5 and 6. Grade 5s have been discuss-ing sorting, adding, and subtracting decimal numbers. On our assessment we used a “Taco Tuesday” menu to “order” items, add their cost and make change. Grade 6s have been focussed on negative and positive num-bers. We talked about how a bank account or a thermometer are excellent examples of these kinds of num-bers in the “real world”. Both classes are eager to begin a new challenge in the next unit!

The month of November has
flown by in the grade 3/4 class-
room. The students have
stretched their knowledge in all subject areas. In math class, we
are working on our number skills as we begin to look at addition
and subtraction. The students are thoroughly enjoying the One-
SchoolOneBook novel. They look forward to reading a new chap-
ter each day. Moving into the final month of 2020, the grade
3/4’s are completing projects in Science and Social to demon-
strate their knowledge of the subject material.

November was an exciting month! It started off with a new snowfall! We were able to
enjoy the fluffy, fresh snow and made some snow angels and tunnels. Then, the tem-
peratures warmed and were able to take advantage of it and make a bunch of large
snowballs for some snow forts. Those snowballs stuck around, and we have had a bunch of fun playing in the forts.
One Book, One School launched The World According to Humphrey, and so did our class pets, Simon and Theodore! Si-
mon and Theodore are guinea pigs that were adopted from the Moose Jaw Humane Society and are getting used to life in
Grade 1/2. We are learning a lot of facts about both hamsters and guinea pigs and are able to compare the two. We were
lucky enough to be able to Zoom with the residents at Ivermain and read a chapter with them. Zooming is fun, especially
when we can see ourselves!
A big thank you to Ms. Hovland for teaching us health! We enjoyed all the fun activities, including mystery bags, Bingo,
and an egg experiment. All the best in finishing your internship and your next adventures!

With December comes CHRISTMAS BOOKS! The students are always excited
to take their favorite holiday stories home to share with their families. Other
than the holidays our library displays will be a quick read displays for the old-
er students as well as new books for all age groups.
Please remember to be using your Library Bags for your books. The bags help
keep your books safe from wet mittens and spilled lunches!
A reminder that our Virtual Book fair runs until December 4th. Use the link to
shop and earn our school valuable credits we use for materials in the library
as well as the classrooms.

Orders ship directly to you and they typically arrive in about a week. A great
way to build your home library and put some reading under your tree!
Today after reading the first chapter in The World According to Humphrey, the Kindergarten and the grade
1/2 classes got a surprise! Humphrey’s cousins, Simon and Theodore, are joining their classrooms. Simon
and Theodore are guinea pigs that were rescued from the Moose Jaw Humane Society. We are looking for-
ward to the excitement (and learning) these two will bring to our classrooms!
