It has been just three years since I was carried out of my house on a stretcher by the local rescue squad in an alcoholic coma--this after almost six- teen years of continuous sobriety in Alcoholics Anony- mous. I'd been attending meetings regularly, sponsoring many people, starting meetings, speaking at anniver- saries, staying very active, off-and-on working in the drug and alcohol field, getting divorced, remarrying a person in AA, reconstituting a family, etc. In short, I was living life on life's terms (more or less) while staying sober one day at a time. What happened? I got drunk. Really drunk. Almost died. But before that happened, other very, very subtle things happened. And they happened over a long period, at least several years. Signposts to disaster Number one: my disease got stronger, flexing its muscles every day. (It's not nice, but true. Hard for alcoholics to remember.) Number two: with the help of AA peers and sponsors. I'd enshrined my sobriety, encircling it with a halo of time. Sixteen long years--I had real time under my belt! I was Mr. AA Old-Timer! (Keep in mind that none of this was up- front or conscious. It all happened under the surface, so to speak. A form of pride. Remember what the Fourth Step says? Pride is the deadliest of the Seven Deadlies? It goeth before a fall?) Number three: life happened to me. Yeah, okay, it was life with a capital "L," at least three years of one tragedy after another. Our nest had just emptied of its four fledglings. Three out of four of these kids at one time or another had to come to grips with their own addictions. There were rehabs after rehabs, detention schools, and legal hassles. A Daily Reprieve

Can we accumulate sobriety? Can we store up time in our sobriety banks against emotional recessions or depres-sions down the road? Does long-term sobriety automati-cally make for good sobriety? What makes for good sobri-ety, independent of length of time in the program?

These and other questions have been badgering me now for three long years. It has been just three years since I was carried out of my house on a stretcher by the local rescue squad in an alcoholic coma--this after almost six-teen years of continuous sobriety in Alcoholics Anony-mous. I'd been attending meetings regularly, sponsoring many people, starting meetings, speaking at anniver-saries, staying very active, off-and-on working in the drug and alcohol field, getting divorced, remarrying a person in AA, reconstituting a family, etc. In short, I was living life on life's terms (more or less) while staying sober one day at a time. What happened?

I got drunk. Really drunk. Almost died. But before that happened, other very, very subtle things happened. And they happened over a long period, at least several years.

Signposts to disaster

Number one: my disease got stronger, flexing its muscles every day. (It's not nice, but true. Hard for alcoholics to remember.)

Number two: with the help of AA peers and sponsors. I'd enshrined my sobriety, encircling it with a halo of time. Sixteen long years--I had real time under my belt! I was Mr. AA Old-Timer! (Keep in mind that none of this was up-front or conscious. It all happened under the surface, so to speak. A form of pride. Remember what the Fourth Step says? Pride is the deadliest of the Seven Deadlies? It goeth before a fall?)

Number three: life happened to me. Yeah, okay, it was life with a capital "L," at least three years of one tragedy after another. Our nest had just emptied of its four fledglings. Three out of four of these kids at one time or another had to come to grips with their own addictions. There were rehabs after rehabs, detention schools, and legal hassles.

Alcoholics Anonymous Teleservice, also known as the A.A. hotline, serves alcoholics who are in need of help. We help

them to locate meetings in their area or provide them with someone to talk to in times of crisis.

This is a great way to be of service to your fellow alcoholics. All you need is the use of a phone and a current

meeting schedule. From the comfort of your own home on a landline telephone or even while you’re out and about with the use of a cell phone you can be of service.

We would love to have you join our team. If you have at least six (6) months of sobriety and would like to be of service please contact Central Office at 916-454-1771 or email: [email protected]

on a regular basis and those who just drop by and ask if there

is any way that they can be of service. We could not provide

the services to the groups in such an efficient manner

without the help of our reliable and willing volunteers.

The Fifth Step

The Fifth Tradition

“Each group has but one primary purpose—to carry its

message to the alcoholic who still suffers.”

“ Each Alcoholics Anonymous group ought to be a spiritual

entity having but one primary purpose—that of carrying the

message to the alcoholic who still suffers.”

Twelve Traditions—Short Form

The Fifth Concept

“Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being

the exact nature of our wrongs”

“A.A. experience has taught us we cannot live alone with our

pressing problems and the character defects which cause or

aggravate them. If we have swept the searchlight of Step

Four back and forth over our careers, and it has revealed in

stark relief those experiences we’d rather not remember, if

we have come to know how wrong thinking and action have

hurt us and others, then the need to quit living by ourselves

with those tormenting ghosts of yesterday gets more urgent

than ever. We need to talk to someone about them.”

Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, pg.55

“Throughout our structure, a traditional “Right of Appeal”

ought to prevail, so that minority opinion will be heard and

personal grievances receive careful consideration.”

“We believe the spirit of democracy in our Fellowship and in

our world service structure will always survive, despite the

counter forces which will no doubt continue to beat upon us.

Fortunately we are not obliged to maintain a government

that enforces conformity by inflicting punishments. We need

to maintain only a structure of service that holds aloft our

Traditions, that forms and executes our policies thereunder,

and so steadily carries our message to those who suffer.

Hence we believe that we shall never be subjected to the

tyranny of either the majority or the minority, provided we

carefully define the relations between them and forthwith

tread the path of world service in the spirit of our Twelve

Steps, our Twelve Traditions, and our Conference Charter

II. Trusted Servant Reports A. CCFAA Chairperson’s Report – John E.

Hello to all our Trusted Servants, and welcome to our first Zoom online meeting of the CCFAA. I was in attendance at the Zoom meeting for the OOC this past Tuesday evening, we had a full Quorum, and the office manager Rae was in attendance with us. Her report will be covered in Steve’s OOC report. We want to give an extra thanks to Pete B, our webmaster, and to those that have been helping him compile the data for our online meeting schedules, Robin, Jason, Kathryn C, and Leah D. The website now has a comprehensive list of on-line meetings that is reflected in the AA Meeting App with The Chair. There is a form to add your meeting to the list if you are not already on there, and suggested Zoom protocols are available for conducting your meeting. This has been a lot of work in a short amount of time, and again, extra thanks go out to those involved with the success of this transition. We are still looking for a webmaster to take over next year, please direct any responses to Rae at the Central Office. The phone number at Central Office is 916-454-1771. Keep on top of your meeting treasurers so that we can get contributions to CCFAA back on track as soon as possible. We still have operating expenses and inventories that we need to maintain even during these unusual times, so thank you for staying on top of that issue. OK, let’s move on to the other Chair reports. Thank you for keeping me sober another day. “Principles before personalities” JohnE Chair, CCFAA

B. Assistant Chair/CNIA Liaison – Pierre D.

Like all of us, CNIA has and is experiencing the effects of the Coronavirus mitigation strategies--social distancing, quarantine and isolation. The ban on face to face gatherings has essentially eliminated all of our meetings. The Monthly Area Committee Meetings and the Pre-Conference Assembly (scheduled for April 4th and 5th) were reformatted into online meetings using the Zoom platform which has become so familiar to most of us these last few weeks. We have indeed become a Zooooooming fellowship.

All this being said, the good news is that CNIA is alive and well. We may not be meeting in person but our service commitment to the groups in Area 7 remains solid. Before the “lockdown” the 53rd Pacific Region AA Service Assembly was held in Tucson, March 6-8. Area wide workshops were conducted to discuss General Service Conference Agenda Items. These Workshops were extremely useful in helping groups reach their positions on the Agenda items which were then shared with the Area Delegate at the Pre Conference assembly noted above.

The General Service Conference was postponed due to the Covid-19 crisis. There may be a new tentative date set for the GSC. It is May 16th.

CNIA will schedule a second sharing session for all the groups who did not have a chance to hold a group conscience and share with our Delegate on the Panel 70 Agenda. Saturday, May 9th has been chosen for this date. Please alert your GSRs. An Area Committee Meeting is being held today April 18th. It is providing a good time to hear from the Districts on how things are going?

Finally, I must acknowledge and applaud the efforts and performance of the CCF staff and our Webmaster during this time of emergency. Almost overnight our website had information on where online meetings were available and how to access them. The situation was so fluid so as to make one wonder how the IT folks could keep the information all straight and accurate. Yet they DID IT! Starting with a rudimentary listing of online meetings the list quickly morphed into the sophisticated grid of online meetings which is currently available. Kudos to these hard working folks.

That’s all for now. Thanks for listening.

C. Office Operations Committee Chair Report – Steve R. All board members attended the 4/14/20 OOC meeting.

A new day is here and we are working to keep our Fellowship viable and functioning.

Due to current events our office and members are adjusting to new ways of conducting business as usual.

A special thanks for all the work, seen and unseen that are keeping our fellowship functioning and operational.

Please review the reports that are available and share with your group members.

We are currently reviewing aspects of our needs and options. The reports describe areas and issues relevant to this end.

The changes to office procedures, special events and meetings are requiring great attention. Thank you to all.

We are self-supporting through our own contributions. Please show support including financial as we trudge this road. You are all appreciated.

Thank you in service Steven R.

A. Office Manager’s Report – Rae W. – Not Presented at Meeting

Huge thanks for our webmaster, Pete B. and Kathryn C. who moved quickly to establish a process for tracking and displaying virtual meetings as physical meeting closed.

The Virtual Meeting Finder and Guide is up and running as of 4/10/2020.

Submit new or updates for virtual meetings online using the form at https://aasacramento.org/add-a-virtual-meeting/. Robin and Jason updated the Meeting Finder Plug-in to allow the sharing of virtual meetings on the Meeting Guide App (Chair App). It was a tedious and time-consuming task. They did a terrific job of getting the information formatted and into the Meeting Finder on our website in an efficient and timely manner.

Two of our regular volunteers are helping by answering the business line remotely. Teleservice continues to answer hotline calls 24/7

Carlos tabbed and folded the April BTW and delivered it to the W. Sac bulk mail unit. We are working on the May newsletter for mailing on April 30.

Help for virtual meetings is now available on the website.

Best Practices for Digital 7th Tradition is available on the Virtual Meetings tabs to help those who would like to pass a “Virtual Basket” at their online meeting.

Although our website is opened 24/7, the office hours for processing requests is still 9am to 5pm weekdays. Emails and orders are not processed on weekends.

Our online store (aasacramento.org) is open and you can continue to place your orders for pick-up by appointment or have your order ship. You can continue to pay-by-phone as we work to complete the Payment Processing Gateway.

Payroll and Sales tax deposits and returns will be filed by the April 28 deadline. Operational Items

Thanks everyone for their support of our central office and hope all the delegates will continue to let their groups know the

message that is carried by our central office and the need to keep up the financial support even in these precarious times.

Merchandise can be purchased and the orders are processed through our trusted staff.

Contributions can be made directly to Central office by both the groups and individuals and are always most appreciated

By The Way CCFAA Delegate’s Meeting April May 2020

A. Special Events Chair – Dennis Y.

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, all large gatherings have been forbidden and we must plan accordingly, therefore, the Anniversary Meeting must be postponed until further notice.

Let me assure you that just as soon as the Governor allows such gatherings, the church will be ready to accommodate our group and we are equipped / prepared to proceed on short notice.

However: I question if we should try for a date in May (anniversary), settle for a future date, some other Month this year, or simply put off the Anniversary meeting till 2021 ?

B. Picnic Chairperson’s Report – Vickie H.

Even in these very uncertain times, I’ve been moving forward with plans for the CCFAA Picnic which is scheduled for Sunday, August 16.

Team leads and their home groups are in place for most concessions and activities. Still need home groups to volunteer for the plant booth and hosting the meeting segment (speakers, reading 7th tradition) and putting together a photo booth. Great opportunity for service.

Looking for design ideas for this year’s Picnic T-Shirt. Please put the word out to your home group members. Design ideas can be forward to me at [email protected]

Undoubtedly there is a need to proceed with caution and consideration as to whether the picnic will even take place. At this time, I’m not committing any financial resources. The next few weeks should reveal more information about limitations and restrictions on social gathering.

Before the next delegates meeting, it is my intent to zoom in with the team leads and measure group conscience. Vickie, 2020 CCFAA Picnic Chair FUN, FESTIVITIES AND FELLOWSHIP – CCFAA PICNIC, SUNDAY 8/16/20

I. Reports – Special Committees, Delegates, Liaisons & Invited Guests A. Hospitals & Institutions – Paul G.

Facilities are closed due to COVID-19. Nothing to Report at this time.

B. NCCAA Liaison – Catherine T. Due to our current crisis, the May 2020 conference in Modesto has been cancelled. I have been keeping in contact with Shaun G., the current Chairperson, who said that the NCCAA 73rd Fall Conference September 25, 26 and 27th is still scheduled. As I get updates, I will report to CCFAA. Further, Shaun said at this point nothing more has changed, we are taking it day to day with California guidelines. If the social distancing continues through June or July cancelling San Jose in September may become feasible. He will send out an email at the end of the month if there are further changes. In addition, there is an NCCAA steering committee meeting that got pushed from April to May 31st, at the Stockton Alano Club at 1:15 pm. We will be submitting nominations for Chairperson, among other items. If anyone would like to attend, there are two seats left and we will be meeting at East Yolo Fellowship at noon, 12pm, that day. The website address is www.Norcalaa.org Most Sincerely, in service, Catherine T.

By The Way May 2020

Continued from pg. 1

Several family members faced multiple life-threatening crises. There was the brutal triple murder of my spouse's former in-laws, and all the attendant national publicity for months afterward. A beloved science writer mentor had a mental breakdown and was left disabled and unrecognizable as his former vivacious self. My second sponsor came down with terminal kidney cancer. I buried my third sponsor.

I left my home group because few, if any, remained who were there when I arrived years before. My poor spouse agonized through menopause. During deer season, a stray bullet crashed through our upstairs bedroom window. There were broken arms, hands, a hip replacement, corneal transplants, esophageal and carotid artery surgeries. I lost a favorite student, parents discovered cancers, a close friend of mine relapsed, tornadoes ravaged our county, war broke out in the Middle East.

Need I continue? Welcome to life on life's terms, Mr. AA Old-Timer.

Temptation strikes

One afternoon while working alone in an associate's home, I discovered a basement full to overflowing with every manner of alcoholic beverage--case upon case of the stuff! (Note: right about here I think it fair to mention a deep-seated reservation I had always carried with me that I could still somehow alter my consciousness without dying or otherwise harming myself. No, not with alcohol, but I thought there might be some other "safe" substance--you know, the way the Native American Church has its peyote.)

Well, if you're the kind of booze-hound I am, and the stuff is all around you, and there's not another human in sight, and you just want to get high, I calculate it will take about twenty seconds to unplug from your Higher Pow-er and to uncork your Lower Power. That's about how long it took me.

Later in an intensive relapse unit I had checked myself into, I discovered some wonderful things: I'm not made of marble. I am flesh and bone, and flexible. I can bend without snapping. And I don't have all the answers (never did), even if you persist in making me think that I do.

This alcoholism is truly a disease, and one that gains its strength from telling me it isn't a disease. It's endlessly pa-tient. And getting stronger by the day. I call it a hungry ghost, just over my left shoulder. Relapse is a process in which getting drunk and overdosing is just the final step.

But it needn't end that way. I believe that one can be close to relapse--with shaky or crumbling sobriety--and re-cover from it safely. Way back in the beginning I remember hearing over and over again about dry drunks, progres-sion, Higher Power, being only one drink away from a drunk. . . Believe me, I have a very different outlook on my tender (yet rugged) sobriety these days.

A daily reprieve

I understand now it is indeed a twenty-four hour contract only. Always and only twenty-four hours. I must re-sign this contract every morning and reevaluate it every night.

Is my spiritual condition this moment worthy of such a divine reprieve? Will I stay plugged in--and firmly so--to my Higher Power today? What can I do right now to ensure that connection? Can I see how I am always a beginner (never anything else)? How it's so dangerous to be an expert with a mind clogged with all the answers? How "beginner's mind" has the highest potential? And how "beginner's mind" is what can always save me?

April 9, 2020

Dear friends,

As we, together, follow the global developments related to the response to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandem-

ic, the experience, strength and hope offered by A.A. groups, Intergroups and Central Offices, AA Grapevine and

La Viña, and the General Service Office has never been more evident.

The extraordinary effort taking place across our Fellowship is heartening in this truly difficult time: A.A. groups

who are unable to gather at their usual locations are now meeting on virtual platforms. These virtual meetings

have provided A.A. members, as well as those newly seeking help, the ability to connect with recovering alcohol-

ics across the U.S., Canada and internationally – and stay sober one day at a time.

Local Intergroups and Central Offices are also providing support and resources to help A.A. groups navigate tech-

nology that might be unfamiliar to many members. In addition, some offices have developed “best practices” that

have been helpful to a number of groups – especially those new to digital platforms.

Although our physical doors are closed for the time being, the General Service Office continues to provide ser-

vices to the Fellowship. Members can continue to download A.A. literature and service material from the aa.org

website. We respond to nearly 200 letters a week from members in correctional facilities in the U.S. and Canada.

Further, we are working around the clock to field the steady stream of national and local media requests, with the

understanding that an accurate representation of our efforts can help members and others who might be strug-

gling during this unprecedented period. There has been a lot of media coverage of A.A. in recent weeks.

As an important additional resource to A.A. members, AA Grapevine has provided free access to all 2020 Grape-

vine and La Viña stories, including the audio Grapevine stories.

Your groups’ support and participation in the Seventh Tradition is always a fundamental element of the Fellow-

ship, and is especially crucial now. It ensures that groups sustain good relationships with their landlords so that

they have a place to meet once we can gather again, and it ensures that A.A.’s vital services continue. Shared ex-

perience reflects an increased use of the “digital” basket wherein groups and members utilize digital payment

options for Seventh Tradition contributions to support the group and local entities. Many Intergroups and Central

Offices and Area service structures have added information to their websites about digital contributions.

For contributions to the General Service Office members can access the online contributions link on aa.org. You

may also continue to send checks via standard USPS mail. Subscriptions to Grapevine and La Viña are available on

the aagrapevine.org website, along with their other materials. Support is even more important given that reve-

nue from literature sales has substantially decreased for the time being.

It is clear that our shared efforts ensure that the hand of A.A. will always be there when anyone, anywhere reach-

es out. We thank you for your continued support.

Yours in gratitude and fellowship,

G. Gregory Tobin
