"DB2 and Application Programming: Let me explain it to you again!" Brain Laube

Manulife SQLCODE -805 (reason code 2 or 3), DBRM, contokens, packages, plans, collections, static sql (& dynamic sql), DSNHLI and "attaching" to DB2, syspackage and syspackstmt BIND vs REBIND bind parms This presentation topic idea is based upon my experience as a "application" DB2 DBA supporting developers of DB2 applications in dev and prod. I find myself constantly explaining the same type of DB2 application error (often sqlcode -805) and DB2 concepts to these various end-users. The default action for SQLCODE -805 is often to just BIND the DBRM and hope for the best... But understanding how it all works and fits together provides context and helps understand WHY the error occurs. I often end up explaining to the requestor what is static sql and why it is a "thing" (the pros and cons). I then go through and explain how to map the -805 message information to the information in the DB2 catalog and how it all connects together.

"DB2 for z/OS DBaaS and The Advantages of Automated Objects" Daniel Luksetich DanL Consulting

Database as a service will be the future of DBMS processing. There are a very robust set of database features available on DB2 for z/OS. There are a lot of good reasons to utilize these features, and many of those reasons have to do with performance. Most of the features discussed here can be utilized to save processing time and CPU cost. We'll discuss the advantages of database enforced referential integrity and constraint enforcement, stored procedures, triggers, UDFs, temporal and archive tables, check constraints, sequence objects, optimistic locking support, and more. We'll also address the changing roles for DBAs and system administrators in the DBaaS era.

"Fun with SQL- Application Development" Daniel Luksetich DanL Consulting

A SQL Dojo is a meeting where a bunch of developers, DBA and SYSPROGS get together to work on a number of SQL challenges. They are there to have fun and to engage in a group effort in order to improve their skills in a non-competitive, collaborative, fun environment. The goal is to have practical hands-on experience within a group of peers, learning a specific technical skill within one hour. The exercise is considered successful when it is completed within allocated time AND audience can repeat the exercise at home by themselves. At the end of the dojo the participants receive, a working solution by dojo leaders. Dan Luksetich is a data scientist and senior DB2 DBA consultant. He works as a DBA, application architect, presenter, author, and teacher. Dan has been in the information technology business for over 31 years, and has worked with DB2 for over 26 years. Come to this session to find out about all of the new SQL stuff you can amaze your friends with. George Baklarz, B. Math, M. Sc, Ph.D. Eng., has spent 30 years in IBM working on various aspects of database technology (it seems longer, trust me). He has worked in every department in the Toronto DB2 Development lab and generally can't keep a job for more than 18 months. George has a Doctorate in Computer Engineering, which took him only 13 years to get. The Engineering Faculty didn't like the fact that he worked at IBM - they felt that part-time students would never finish their degree if they had to work for a living! IBM on the other hand wondered how he could work while trying to get a degree! George currently pretends to work as part of the Core Database Technical Sales group (aka DB2) and creates PowerPoint slides for a living.

“Cloud 101 for a DB2 DBA” Chris Eaton IBM Toronto

How do DB2 DBAs get into “the cloud”? What do we need to know to help our companies leverage cloud services and why should we bother (other than the CIO in my company is asking what our cloud strategy is for database)? In this session we will start with some Cloud 101 topics like what infrastructure as a service and platform as a service really means and what a DBA needs to know about each. We will focus on Softlayer which is IBMs cloud platform and also Bluemix which is the hosting location for dashDB and SQLDB (both of which are managed DB2 offerings in the cloud). I will cover where the softlayer data centers are as many companies have to comply with regulatory requirements for where their data must reside. I will also discuss how to create DB2 instances on the cloud and what you can and can’t do with them (that is, what DBA activities are managed for me and what do I have control over). We will complete the cloud 101 discussion with a DB2 persons view of how I link in other data services and why I would or would not use them like Cloudant, dataWorks, Watson Analytics and BigInsights on Cloud. Chris Eaton is a Worldwide Technical Sales Leader for IBM’s Cloud Data Services organization. Chris has been working with DB2 on the Linux, UNIX, Windows platform for over 23 years. From customer support to development manager, to Externals Architect and Product Manager for DB2,

“Zen and the Art of Database Performance” Steve Rees IBM Canada

Performance problems can be tough to solve, especially if you've not had to deal with them much before. In this session, we'll go through a step-by-step, decision tree-based approach for tackling performance problems. We start by identifying the core area of the bottleneck - is it time spent processing, or time spent just waiting? Then, by using DB2's powerful monitoring interfaces, we refine our diagnosis, drilling down layer by layer. This logical, efficient approach not only helps us get to root cause, but it does so in a way that avoids wasting time by "trying random stuff" which isn't likely to help. Based on a prior & highly successful IDUG session of the same name, this presentation has been completely revised and updated for 2015, using the latest levels of DB2 LUW. Steve Rees is an IBM Senior Technical Staff Member focusing on DB2 LUW performance. Steve joined the IBM Toronto Laboratory in 1991, and has worked on DB2 LUW ever since. He currently leads teams across multiple areas of DB2 performance, including pureScale and SQLDB transactional cloud, as well as Optim tools performance. Steve has an ongoing passion for developing best practices in the area of monitoring and tuning DB2, and presents regularly at conferences.

IMS

“APIs to the Data Prize: Discovery of IMS & DB2 Services with z/OS Connect” Haley Fung

IMS Senior Software Engineer, IBM APIs change how organizations build innovative mobile & web applications and integrate with cloud and third party applications. IBM z Systems clients have made significant investments developing assets that support mission-critical business functions. With IBM API Management, clients can govern the way APIs are consumed and get detailed analytic insights on the success of the APIs and applications that are consuming them. This session with its associated demo highlights how you can discover deployed z System IMS and DB2 assets, both Web and REST based services, and import information about services, to streamline exposing these services as APIs.

“DevOps for Systems APIs with Deployment Automation & Continuous Delivery” Haley Fung

IMS Senior Software Engineer, IBM IBM z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition provides a first-class solution to easily turn your mission critical IMS, CICS, or other z Systems assets into APIs. With the increasing number of z Systems APIs to manage and deployment to automate, how you manage your growing portfolio of APIs becomes a crucial task in your DevOps strategy. Join Haley Fung to learn some best practices about how IBM z/OS Connect can help you succeed at this task. Haley is a Senior Software Engineer. She is currently the SOA technical and development lead in IMS with over 13 years of solid experience in developing solutions for SOA, modernization, enterprise application integration and connectivity for IMS. Haley is a frequent presenter at global technical conferences. Her deep technical expertise and her passion and dedication for customer have helped many IMS customers to modernize and enhance their application infrastructures.

“A Data Definition Language for Multiple Database Types” Greg Vance

This presentation provides an introduction on how the same syntactical language can be used to define and modify resource and structure definitions for several database environments. It discusses the use of a data definition syntax that can define, modify and remove database resources and then goes on to more granularly map and compare the different syntaxes required for different database environments on z/OS. This session is of value to DB2 administrators that are trying to learn IMS and to IMS administrators that have to manage both IMS and DB2 data.
