President’s Report
Gee these months are going very fast, seems like only 4 weeks ago I did my last report for the magazine. Thanks to those members who have emailed photos of previous trips that they had been on, to me recently. If you have any interesting stories and or photos for the magazine, our forum or Facebook, please let me know and I can add them in. If you are nominated to do a written report of the trip that you have been on, please make sure that you have it to me before the end of the month so I can have time to fit it in the next issue of the magazine. There have been plenty of trips on during September and October and I hope that you have been able to get on at least one of them.
Editorial

Hello everyone, Xmas Party; Kerrie has informed me that she has only received one form, from the members, for the clubs Combined Xmas Party, which has me concerned, as Kerrie has a lot of work to complete, to once again make this event amazing. Kerrie can only do this if all members get their forms into her as early as possible, as she needs the numbers attending ASAP . Mingara; Has been and gone once again, and the result was pleasing to see even though not as spectacular as last year. This solid result for us, and indeed the promoters ensures that this club will continue to have a fundraising avenue well into the future, so this club not only relies on membership fees. Although this event was not a membership drive, we still gained 16 new members from the show, and many more went away with more knowledge about there local 4wd club. Total raised from the show was $ 4057.00, with club costs of $ 950.00 to prepare for the show with a whole new library of photographs and the purchase of the first prize. So, although down on last year, the club gained a healthy result in the end. A huge thankyou to the volunteers that helped out during the weekend, but a big personal thankyou for all of Kerrie's hard work over the past few months getting this display up and running. To all the club members out on trips this long weekend be safe, and enjoy your trips around this great country of ours. And remember this club is PAR ONERIE Shane Brodbeck President

Nundle State Forest
Whose idea was it to start so early? An early start it was for some, leaving at 5.00am to make our way to Scone. Finally we arrived for that much needed caffeine hit or in my case a hot chocolate fix. Maybe it's a 4x4 urban myth that the trip leader provides breakfast? No such luck! Maybe next time? On the road again, the 15 cars number off as we head out of Scone to Nundle via Crawney Pass. You will hear and read this statement over and over again in this report but the scenery was beautiful. Particularly as we passed the most amazing grove of Black Boy Grasses totally enveloping a mountainous slope. This display was the largest clump anyone on the trip had seen in any one place. We passed through the extensive equine property Kitchwin Hills. Time for morning tea- slices, and the much needed sugar fix. Arriving at Nundle around 11.10, TC gives us firm orders only an hour for lunch before we head off again. Some head off to top up on fuel... a very slow prospect with one diesel pump and no automatic responses, with it requiring a manual reset after each vehicle. Many took the chance to explore the old Wool mill, which is still in working order for historical value along with a boutique of woolen clothing for sale. We then dash off to the lovely old pub for a much talked about bowl of chips. It was lovely sitting in the sun enjoying our chips and beer. Before we knew it, it was leaving time and the newbies had to make a dash to the car. Oops, two minutes late but luckily Tail End Charlie (Trevor) patiently waited. We were now on our way just out of town into Nundle State Forest to set up at the Ponderosa Camp Area. A quick 45 minute set up and then it was time for FUN. Tyres down for mud we headed for an afternoon drive. Our first challenge was a steep ascent up into a lookout. So many times, all you could see in the climb up to crests was your bonnet and the treetops. This was why we were here. Better than the rides at a fun park. We then got to slip and slide our way through some wonderful mud tracks. (So glad we cleaned the truck before heading out... NOT) Up tracks, down tracks, around sweeping corners and tight bends. Someone made the comment that the tight bends didn't suit the Nissan but that can't be right. A Nissan can tackle anything! Now if they said Jeep, we'd understand... We then headed into the 'deep dark forest' where Faye put out the call to beware of the Yowies... The fun of more mud puddles and a small creek crossing. We then head up the hill hoping to get up to the tower but no such luck. Sat Navs are good but not good enough to let us know about a locked gate. Back down the hill, stopped along the track to collect some firewood. Thank goodness for Tappy's ute! Including what we all brought I'm starting to think this fire is going to be seen from space. We arrive back to the campsite by 4pm just in time for happy hour.

Day 2
Breakfast and on the move by 9am. We inflate our tyres ready for the gravel roads ahead. We head towards Barry, through Barry Station and then onto Glenrock Station. Absolutely stunning rolling, green hills. The first of our creek crossings appear just after Ben Hall Creek Bridge and considering all the rain we’ve had of recent all were flowing but barely a challenge- not much in the way of bow waves, the tyres barely got wet. Trip leader’s call for morning tea and once again, Cherrie comes to the fore and supplies a yummy peach slice. From here we have another 16 creek crossings, twenty in total for the day. On through Ellerston Station, a rather impressive Packer pastoral station, 68 km NE of Scone. The property also boasts some the best polo fields and its golf course was rated number 4 in Australia. But we weren’t here for the golf so what the matter. We have another lovely creek side stop for an early lunch and a wonderful boost of vitamin D. This was a lovely spot to have a quiet word and catch up with others within the group. Here we began to climb and were happy to find the main road through the Barrington National Park was open so had a great detour through a track. Wild brumbies caught our eye but shielded away as the convoy passed, those in the lead must have been fairly scary! Here we passed through and witnessed the dingo fence as we head on through Dingo Gate at the Western extreme of the Barrington Tops and back down towards Moonan Flats. We passed quite a number of wildlife on this second day of the trip, an echidna, numerous snakes, eagles and one lonely kangaroo. At Moonan Brook we re-inflate all the way back to blacktop pressure and this is when it hits you that the weekend adventure is coming to an end. Many within the group depart from here but those that are more inclined for some much needed chippies and beer head on to Moonan Flat Pub and drink to a wonderful weekend. Thanks Faye and T.C for a great weekend. Maria and Narelle

World Rally Championship Report
What happened? How? Why? Where? Who will be interested? How can I make people interested?
My vision was clouded by the uproar of dust as the car speeded around the corner, shards of upturned earth pock-
marked the ground around me and rocks pelted the landscape…
Trip Leader Raymond and Vanessa Young (Isuzu)
Participants Simon and Cheryl (BT-50) Allan and Tracy (Isuzu) Wombat (Nissan Navara)
Mik, Tracy and Byron (Land Cruiser), Friends of Ray and Vanessa Matt, Carole and Annabelle ( Patrol)
To see such sights is a once in a lifetime opportunity, as is getting hit by a stones travelling at unearthly speeds. I’m
sure it was as thrilling for them as well as us. The car tore around a track, dodging ditches and edges my family and I
had been well aware of, while we were driving to the campground generously made available to us by Ray’s father and
we thank him for the privilege of witnessing such an amazing event with such clarity, while making camp on the
beautiful, rolling hills of the farm lands, only minutes away from a gorgeous billabong.
Many of us arrived for the weekend, while some made camp on the Friday. My family arrived under the veil of
darkness, so the morning was like a shroud of clarity resting upon the landscape, lighting each spectacular detail in a
frenzy of colour and sunlight. The rally began at 9am on the Saturday, signalled by the roar of V8 rally cars tearing up
the dirt road. Helicopters and cameras followed, held by all manners of both professional and amateur photographers,
including myself, who forgot the taking of a photograph required the lens to be uncovered and/or the camera to be
turned on…
Soon, car after dust-ridden car drifted around the corners at incomprehensible speed; showering all spectators with a
healthy dose of dust and pebbles. Any stationary object was coated in a new coat of paint I like to name ‘dirt’. Tables
and cars were coated in layers so thick, before long, they were comical. However, the toilet remained a wonderful
shade of ‘porta-loo’ green. Huge chunks of up turned earth littered each corner, spattering out into the fields as drivers
knocked them from their path.
After the rally drew to a conclusion, the bonfire was lit and the stars found their proper place in the sky. It was at this
point that all the grandest stories of adventures and mishaps sweetened the night air with laughter. As the night drew
to a close, excitement still ran high and memories were settling into the far reaches of our tired minds.
At dawn the following day, plans to go for sight-seeing drive around the area, eventually travelling to the billabong
nearby. The drive took us through the serene landscape we had previously witnessed, while presenting us with an
opportunity to observe the chunks of road that been carved out of the road by the many rally cars the day before. After
a short while, we arrived at a mountain bushwalk, though some of us didn’t equip the best shoes for it… *cough* me
*cough*…
As we traversed the rocks and leaf litter, the slope increased and the going got a little tougher but everyone reached
the lookout of the trail and after a few photos and topics of conversation, we headed back down to our cars. After a
spot of morning tea and socialisation, we headed back towards the promise of cool, crystal clear waters.
As the heat of the day drove everyone on, the promise of a nice swim in cold water seemed ever more pleasant. We
gathered up everything we would need and headed down the farm lands towards the promise of a much needed cooling
–down.
On the way back however, certain misadventures were in store for the unfortunates in our car. While we had been
lounging by the water, a herd of cows had migrated into the field, disorientating our navigation causing us to be lost
amongst the cattle; an interesting yet not-unwelcome farmyard experience.
I would like to thank Ray and Vanessa, Ray’s father and mother for allowing us the opportunity to camp and
experiencing their amazing views. Thanks also to Mik for lending us light when we needed it most.
A most enjoyable trip had by everyone.
By Annabelle

Well what a show, there was good weather, good crowds and may I say it was another successful event put on by Kerrie Carlin and her helpers. We had a new display area with plenty of photos from past trips, which bought back a lot of memories to many of the club members who were there at the show. There were many inquiries about our club during the 3 days of the show and we had 16 members of the public sign up on the day. Our raffle was a huge success again raising just over $3,000.00 for the club, I am sure that this money will be dispersed to some of the charities that we support throughout the year.

Basic Recovery Equipment which includes the following
Front & Rear Recovery hooks

have the right to reject a request to go from someone who is considered under experienced.

cautious driving in order to negotiate your way. In most circumstances winching and/or towing will not
be necessary.
D This class of trip is considered to be a relatively easy trip. It is unlikely that any winching and/or

will advise you whether you and your vehicle are suitable.

Shipwrecks and Whales to High Plains Gold
Bev and Bob invite you to join them on a Pre Christmas and New Year Road Trip
Where: NSW South Coast and Victorian High Country
When: Sun Dec 21st 2014 to Sat 3rd Jan 2015
Details:
This is a road trip adventure that will incorporate a bit of everything: on road touring, off
road adventure, bush camping and possibly some formal campsites too.
We are looking for a couple of extra cars to join us; due to a desire to move quick and light,
maintain a relatively loose itinerary and with possibly limited camping opportunities on
some parts of this trip, we wish to keep the numbers low – 4 cars only.
We plan to travel down the south coast incorporating Bega and Eden before the Christmas
crowd arrives on the coast; a visit to the Whaling museum at Eden is a must. Christmas will
be spent at a bush camp on the banks of the Snowy River, after which we will ascend to the
Victorian High Plains from Limestone Creek across Davies Plain, conquering Mount Pinnibar,
and then down to Wheelers Creek Hut. A fast cross country run on the bitumen towards the
Mansfield area, or a more scenic trip cross country, will have us seeing the New Year in at
the Woods Point Pub, eventually departing via Jamieson, aiming to be back on the Coast by
the weekend.
Required:
You and your vehicle in tip top condition, prepared for a mix of challenging and
remote 4wding and some ‘on road’ laid back touring
Self sufficient for fuel, water and food
Be prepared to camp in all conditions - anything from snow to 40 degrees
Open mind and sense of humour – this is an un-reccy’d trip with a loose agenda
driven by timing, weather and road conditions on the day
Meeting Point:
Date: Sunday 21st December 2014
Where: Cooma
Time: 12.00 Noon, aiming to depart 1pm - (First night will be a bush camp)

MULGA OR "KING BROWN" SNAKE
(Pseudechis australis)
The Mulga snake has the largest recorded venom output of any snake. It is found throughout Australia, except in Victoria, Tasmania and the most southern parts of Western Australia. The name "King Brown" snake may lead to confusion and to the incorrect use of brown snake antivenom, and is therefore best avoided. It feeds on rats, mice birds, lizards and other snakes. It is frequently active at night, especially in hot weather.
It is heavily built, being in fact the heaviest Australian venomous snake. The body is uniform in colour, usually light brown, but there is some variation between individuals. The average length is around 1.5m, and the record length greater than 3m. Mulga snakes are oviparous (egg-laying). They may become aggressive and strike repeatedly if threatened
EASTERN BROWN SNAKE
(Pseudonaja textilis)
The common or eastern brown snake is active mostly by day, except in very hot weather. It feeds on rats, mice, birds, lizards and other snakes and is therefore attracted to barns and farms. It prefers dry country to swampy areas. The brown snake lays from 10 to 35 eggs. The young brown snakes are banded in dark grey or black, and have a broad band on the back of their heads. By three years of age, the bands disappear, and the adult is usually uniform in colour, ranging through light or dark brown, orange-yellow or even black. The shape is streamlined, and the head is not distinct The eastern brown snake is found throughout the eastern half of Australia, with the exception of Tasmania. It has also been reported in New Guinea, where it is believed to have been introduced by man. The average length is approximately 1.5 metres, and the largest recorded length 2.4 metres. When attacking, the brown snake winds its body into an 'S' shape, raising itself off the ground. It strikes very rapidly, with its mouth open, possibly because of its relatively small fangs (approximately 3mm in length). The average venom yield is around 4mg (although the record venom yield was 67mg). The venom contains potent neurotoxins and procoagulants, resulting in progressive paralysis and incoagulable blood. Clotting defects may require multiple doses of antivenom for complete reversal. Occasional fatalities have occurred as a result of bleeding into the brain due to coagulation disturbances

This is designed as a camping trip, due
to the fact that we will not have vehicle
access to our camping area at Dunn’s
Swamp. Camper trailers are welcome,
but will have to park away from the
camping area, and may need to return
via the sealed roads instead of via the
Wollemi N.P.
On the forward journey, we’ll traverse
mainly sealed roads, via Cessnock,
Denman, Bylong and Rylstone, to
Dunn’s Swamp, where we camp
(camping fee is $5 per adult and $3
per child, per night).
Activities include bushwalking,
swimming and kayaking in/on the
beautiful water reservoir (on the
Cudgegong River), rock climbing,
fishing and a half day excursion to
Ferntree Gully.
The return journey, on the Sunday, takes
us into the north-western corner of
Wollemi National Park, for the 4WD
part of the trip (only 20km), on a rarely
traversed track, over Nullo Mountain,
via private roads at each end. A scenic
drive through the Widden Valley brings
us back on to the Cox’s Gap road, then
via Denman for the trip home.
What to Bring: Camping gear, drinking
water, shower (if desired), kayaks (if
possible), sturdy walking shoes,
swimming togs. [Pit toilets are
provided]
NB: The return trip will change if it
rains, as the track is available in fine
weather only.
## Those who have only the weekend
available may wish to join us at Dunn’s
Swamp on the Friday evening.
