experience. Ingredients include a new demonstration kitchen

featuring local chefs; an Artisan Alley offering samples from artisanal

food producers; two new wine education seminars; eight food

vendors selling specially prepared wine country cuisine; and more

The complement of wine and food has long been celebrated at our

collective dinner tables so elevating the food experience at the Paso

Robles Wine Festival was a perfect next step for this successful event,

said Joeli Yaguda of Pasolivo Olive Oil and Wine Festival committee

member. The Wine Festival committee is confident that the 2008

Paso Robles Wine Festival will satisfy the appetite of visitors and locals

alike who crave such an experience.

The excitement of the Paso Robles Wine Festival and its appeal to

Culinary Tourists has earned it recognition with the County of San

Luis Obispo and City of Paso Robles. In conjunction with the SanLuis Obispo County Visitors & Conference Bureau and Hospice du

Rhone the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance will accept County and

City resolutions on May 6 entitling the month of May 2008 as Paso

Robles Wine Month and the week of May 10-18, 2008 as National

    Tourism Week.

This concept, better known as Culinary Tourism, is defined as the

pursuit of unique and memorable eating and drinking experiences

according to the International Culinary Tourism Association. In 2007

the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA) profiled the Culinary

Tourist as a younger, more affluent and better educated traveler. TIA

reports 27 million American leisure travelers engaged in culinary or

wine-related activities annually while traveling. The report indicates

that wine tourists spend an average of one thousand dollars per visit.

Paso Robles attracts 1.2 million winery tourist annually according to

the regions recent economic impact study conducted by MKF

    Research in 2007.

With a name that has become synony-

mous for the Paso Robles AVA, a

    focus on handcrafted estate wines

and a family-run business, Robert Hall Winery

is about to approach a milestone in their

history. We will be at 100,000 case produc-

Robert Halls Marketing Director. The focus,

however, has never left the vineyard.

The wine is made in the vineyard, says

Robert Hall winemaker Don Brady. My job

is not to screw it up. Bradys fame is for his

wine blends and he hit the jackpot, so to

speak, with the Robert Hall Rhne power-

house called Rhone de Robles. The blend of

Paso Robles Rhne varietals has garnered

attention all over the media including a write-

up in Everyday with Rachel Ray magazine.

But thats not Bradys only strength.

Robert Halls Cabernet Sauvignon won a

gold medal from the San Francisco Chronicle

    Wine Competition and the Meritage

Bordeaux blend won a gold medal from the

West Coast Wine Competition and scored a

90 from The Wine News. Its not all about

    awards and accolades, though.

Each of our varietals was individually

selected in concert with the terroir found on

our ranch. We truly believe it all starts in the

    vineyard, says Murphy-Rodrigues. In that

way, Brady can concentrate on each individual

harvest as if it were a small boutique wine.

    Thats why, according to Murphy-Rodrigues,

we also specialize in smaller lots, such as

our Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and our new

releases of Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah

    which are tasting room exclusives.

Robert Hall, Sr. first fell in love with the

winery lifestyle on a family vacation to the

Rhne Valley of France in the 1970s. A native

of Minnesota, Hall was captivated by pairing

wine and food and the process of grape

growing and winemaking. When he returned

to the states, he ventured off west looking for

the perfect terroir where he could grow the

great Rhne fruit he experienced in France.

Already something of a business giant with

    experience in construction, horse-breeding,

travel agencies and restaurants, among other

things, Hall knew that his dedication to

quality would be the key to success.

Our goal is to provide an exceptional

tasting experience with an ideal price point,

    says Murphy-Rodrigues. We believe our

price point is ideal, with consistent quality

from vintage to vintage. If the consumer is

any record of it, then Robert Halls success is

indeed incredible. In more than 45 states and

seven countries, Robert Hall Sr. is on the road

nearly 200 days a year as a sort of ambassador

for his brand. And the family business i

pretty good hands with grandson Robert H

the III as Global Brand Manager and is

charge of the sales division for the winery.

spends a lot of time on the road with

grandfather extolling the virtues of th

    exceptional wines.

As a hallmark of their winemaking exp

ence, the Robert Hall Winery has imp

mented sustainable growing practices as w

including a deficit water irrigation progr

that helps conserve Californias most preci

resource. Committed to showcasing the P

Robles AVA in all of its wines, Robert Hall

made an effort to care for and keep fertile

vineyards that it owns and from which

    purchases grapes.

The Robert Hall Estate vineyards comp

about 285 acres of grapes with reduced yie

all over the Paso Robles AVA. Since the vi

    tasting rooms, Hall knew he

needed his to stand out. Consid-

    ered a destination winery, Robert

    Hall Sr.s longtime companion

    Margaret Burrell, a talented artist

with an eye for dcor, is respon-

    sible for the welcoming atmos-

phere of the tasting room. Hand-

made sconces that adorn the walls

and a faux distressed granite wall

painting in the wine cavern are all

part of her contributions to the

    tasting room. Along with fellow

artist, Steve Kalar, the two also

    provided the impetus behind the

    stained concrete floors and painted

    fountain in the tasting room.

Speaking of the cavern, it may

be the other secret weapon of the

    winery. Over 19,000 square feet

    stretches out underneath the

winery itself and houses the barrel

room where the wines are kept.

Tours are available daily, of course,

and the artwork by both Burrell

and Kalar create an inviting and

warm atmosphere in a place where

warmth isnt really the point. The

caverns main task is to keep the

    wine at a consistent temperature

just right for fermenting in its

    premium oak barrels.

The words wine and Bakersfield arent

usually used in the same sentence

unless its a trick question. But Bakers-

field is where winemaker Joey Tensley of

Carina Cellars grew up. As the force behind

the powerhouse that Carina Cellars has

become in a few short years, its clear that his

rural upbringing in the Central Valley gave

him a strong foundation. He first learned

about wine at age 12, while playing at a

soccer tournament in Bordeaux. He and his

young teammates got to tour a winery. Joey

was immediately enthralled and knew what

he wanted to do with the rest of his life.

Which pretty much made me the only kidgrowing up in Bakersfield with that particular

    dream, he says off-handedly.

Los Olivos, where Carina Cellars is

located, has a rural, agricultural charm, but

this wine region is nothing like Bakersfield.

The interior of the tasting room is loose and

warm, with wood wine racks lining the walls,

stained concrete floors and two generous

wood tasting bars which can house large

parties or, conversely, be intimate enough for

just a few people. Local artwork adorns the

walls which is rotated every two months and

focuses on artists closely connected to the

area. Local people tend to buy local art, says

tasting room manager Carolyn Turner. Her

goal is to make certain that when anyonewalks into Carina Cellars, they feel welcomed

    and right at home.

The tasting room opened in August of

2004 and has been busy ever since. Part of

that success is that winemaker Joey Tensley

and owner David Hardee know their audi-

ence. The focus is on Syrah and Rhne-style

wines. Syrah is very hip, Tensley says. The

cool thing about Syrah is that it adapts to

    various growing conditions very we

    Tensley currently produces seven iteration

Syrah under his Tensley label, as well as Vi

nier, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah for Car

Cellars. Carina also produces a few Syblends like Clairvoyant, which is Syr

Grenache and Mourvedre, and their flags

wine, Iconoclast, a unique blend of Sy

from Santa Barbara and Cabernet Sauvign

from Napa. Carina offers two distinct lab

dard offerings of Syrah and Viognier. T

open at 1307 Park St. Alley in beautiful downtown

call now for reservations. In addition to our award-

winning wines we now offer a full selection fine

culinary items and can create custom gift baskets

for any special occasion. When you think about wine and wine culture

there are generally two camps. In one corner there

are connoisseurs who are considered in-the-know

and their like counterparts, wineries that are

steeped in legacy and tradition. In the

other there are a multitude of people

who enjoy wine, but their life doesnt

revolve around it, and winery upstarts,

of which many in Paso Robles could be

considered. The ironic thing is that these

upstarts, or startups, often have a

    strikingly similar story at their

root, a man falls in love with wine

and ends up chucking it all like

    Gauguin to follow his dreams.

In reality these Gauguins straddle both camps.

They may not consider themselves connoisseurs

but they did envision their life revolving around

wine. At the same time, legacy and tradition are not

a part of their stock so everything from the labels on

the bottle, to the type of wines they make are in

many ways unbound. This in and of itself doesguarantee good or bad wines, but in our opinio

does capture a key high-level difference betw

old and new world wines. If you think about w

as the expression of a culture it also speaks

differences in ethos. Does this imply

winemakers must embrace a single phi

    ophy of winemaking? Surely, there

    valuable insights and techniques that

    be leveraged from both schools

thought. Vihuela Winery came to frui

on just that principal, born out

harmonious blend of art ascience. We currently focus

    Bordeaux style wines and plan

nglim Winery is proof that the American

Dream is thriving and doing well.Former South Bay business executives

Steve and Steffanie Anglim chucked life in the

fast lane to begin life in the SLO lane, San LuisObispo County, that is. Relocating and buying

a home in Paso Robles was just the ticket forthe Anglims to begin their new life.

Rather than buying a vineyard and farming

the grapes, the Anglims concentrated onmaking great wine from the sources already

available. Sourcing gives me enormous flexi-

bility, says Steve Anglim. I want to workwith growers who are as passionate about

growing grapes as I am about making wine.Their wines have been delivering the

goods, too, as they say. Award-winning Rhne

varietals as well as a few others have putAnglim Winery permanently on the Paso

Robles wine map. It is, of course, where theywant to be. Steffanie Anglim still speaks aboutone of her first times in the city. We

happened to be in town the evening of theTree Lighting, says Steffanie, referring to the

Christmas tree lighting in the same City Park

where the Paso Robles Wine Festival is heldeach year. I saw the City Park filled with

families holding candles and singing carols, and I was hooked.

This years Wine Festival creates new

opportunities for tasting Anglim wines. Were releasing several new blends as well

as our second vintage of Fiddlestix VineyardPinot Noir, says Steffanie. The new Rhne

white blend is called Cameo and it is 50%

Marsanne, 25% Roussanne and 25% Viog-

nier. Its got a lot of nice Asian pear andwhite peach flavors, but that Marsanne also

gives it some nice minerality. The Anglims have a full weekend planned

for Wine Festival this year, including a dinner, tasting in the park, and festivities at the

tasting room. Our family comes to town

every year from all over the country to help, explains Steffanie. We hope people will come

and see us and taste what our family winery is

    all about.

Since their first crush in 2002, the Angl

harmonized, allowing Anglim to create th

first Rhne red blend, called Best Ba

Blend, made up of 45% Mourvedre, 4Syrah and 10% Grenache. Its got a re

earthy character, Steffanie says. Theresmokiness to it, too and then that splash

fruit and pepper from the Grenach Anglim also produces single-vineyard

etals, from the Pinot Noir to new releases o

100% Viognier from Bien Nacido Vineya

and their first Cabernet Franc from Paso Sol Vineyard in Templeton. We continue

During the 1970s the most popular late

night destination for couples was the quaint

wine and cheese establishments. It was

romantic, candlelit and served up your

choice of wine, as long as it was one of the

four top selling brands of the decade: a Rosby Lancers or Mateus, a sweet Riesling by

Blue Nun or Gallo Hearty Burgundy red

wine. As for cheese choices, it was largely

brie or cheddar. Although the idea of pairing

wine with cheese was on the right track,

perhaps the timing was premature. In the

1970s the American wine drinker was not as

sophisticated as he or she is now, not to

mention lacking choices of quality California

wines. But wine and cheeses have been

paired together through the ages and today

the magic of this marriage is renewed at

Sylvester Vineyards & Winery. The friendly

Sylvester tasting room staff offers a vast

assortment of cheeses from all over the world

with the help of their sister company,

Peacock Cheese. Pairings of gourmet cheese

with reserve wines are offered daily. For the

cheese enthusiast or beginners a Cheese

Society membership is available, with wine

and cheeses sent to club members

    throughout the year.

Like any wine and food pairing, wine and

    cheese pairing respects personal preferences

over strict rules, however there are a few

simple guidelines that improve your odds of

experiencing an exciting wine and cheesemarriage on the palate. Soft-ripened cheeses,

such as brie or camembert pair best with

white wines or sparkling wines. A strong

blue cheese is a perfect answer to a nice sweet

port. Another simple rule of thumb is to

choose a cheese from the same region as the

wine, for example, combining French wines

with French cheeses. Experimentation is the

best advice when seeking perfect pairs. Some-

times the best combination is when opposites

attract, and in other cases, a similarity shared

by the wine and cheese come together nicely.

At the spacious and charming Sylvester

Winery tasting room in Paso Robles, you can

relive the romance and memories of the wine

and cheese days gone by only this time

with a reliable choice of some of the best

wines Paso Robles has to offer and with

cheeses specifically paired to their wines.

Here are a few suggestions: 2007 Kiara

Reserve Sauvignon Blanc is fabulous paired

with Humboldt Fog, a soft-ripened goa

WINE COUNTRY NEWS WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

    www.winecountrythisweek.com

    by Marcy DeGarimore

According to American Gold Medal Wines,

    Eberle Winery is a top-ten gold-medal award-

winning winery in the United States. Thats

just one of a long list of accolades to grace this

Paso Robles institution, which was founded

by Gary Eberle in 1979. Now considered bymany as a pioneer of Paso Robles the fastest

growing wine region in the state Eberle lives

and breathes to promote Paso Robles and the

wines that come from this land.

When I first came here in 1973 with my

professors from UC Davis, he says, I was

told that Paso Robles would be the next

great wine region in California. Now, people

ask if Im surprised to see the boom in wine-

making in the area. The truth is, I thought it

would happen a long time ago. But Im

happy that winemakers today are proving

    my professors right.

And while Eberle believes that consistent

quality in winemaking is important, he feels

his biggest job is to promote Paso Robles on a

national and international basis. Only now,

35 years after first arriving to the area, does he

feel the region is truly becoming recognized

for its outstanding capacity for great grapes. You know, people ask me all the time

when Im going to retire, he jokes. How can

I retire when I havent worked a day in my

life? This is what I love to do. Its the only

thing Ive ever done. And I can tell you, Im

    living my dream.

Gary has also helped several other local

winemakers live their dreams by working

under his tutelage at Eberle Winery. Toby

    Shumrick (Tobin James Winery), Mat

    Garretson (Garretson Wines), Robert Nadeau

    (Nadeau Family Vintners), Tom Meyers

    (Castoro Cellars), Dan Panico (Dover

    Canyon), Chuck Mulligan (Harmony

Cellars) and Bill Sheffer (Halter Ranch) all

made their first wines at Eberle Winery. In

fact, many in the industry call the winery

    Eberle University for Garys hands-on

    approach to apprenticeship.

helm of Eberle operations, the winery

    teve Cass is something

of an orchestra leader.Taking disparate parts of a

    greater whole and meshing

them together, he has created a

unique winery in the heart of

    the Paso Robles region. Cass

Wines is the brainchild of the

man who spent 20 years with

    the Charles Schwab Company.

I was a wine drinker, not an

aficionado. I was looking for the

next thing to do, he says with a wry sense of humor.

The next thing to do turned out a little bigger than he expected.Retiring from Schwab in the Bay Area on his 20th anniversary with the

company, Cass moved with his wife and two grown children here to

Paso Robles in search of the next phase. Learning quickly that he was

in Wine Country and being a wine drinker, he began preparing for the

next career and purchased 150 acres of vineyard land eight miles east

of the city of Paso Robles. There were no other wineries back here at

the time, he says. It was just us back then.

Back then was 1999 and Cass was the first to put together his

winery in an area that now boasts around 16 such wineries. All of

them have banded together to form the Back Roads Alliance of Paso

Robles Wineries. Their first event was held on April 26th at The

Loading Chute restaurant in Creston, not far from the wineries. We

had about 210 people there and it was all word of mouth from the

wineries. There was no advertising just selling tickets from the

    tasting rooms, says Cass.

But Casss tasting room is something very special indeed. We

figured there was no reason for people to come back here when we

first started. We were the only ones here. So Cass built not just a

winery and tasting room, but a full kitchen with patio dining creating

a Wine Country lunch bistro complete with a Culinary Institute of the

Arts trained chef named Brandon McPartlin. We hired him right off

the plane from Florida, says Cass. Actually, McPartlin, 28, had

recently married and come to California to work as a Sous Chef for acatering company that Cass was using. I hired him to be our Execu-

tive Chef and we put him right to work.

With a light and fresh lunch menu featuring such delectables as

pulled pork Cuban sandwiches, Truffle Pizza and the best seller,
