TEQUILA IS PLANT-BASEDTequila is only made from the blue agave, or agave tequilana Weber. The core of the plant
contains aguamiel or "honey water," which is used for tequila production.
ONLY THE AGAVE HEART IS USED TO MAKE TEQUILATequila is produced by removing the heart or piña, of the agave plant. This heart is stripped of its leaves and then cooked to remove the sap,
which is fermented and distilled.
TO BE CALLED TEQUILA, IT MUST BE PRODUCED IN MEXICOJust as true champagne must hail from France, tequila has Denomination of Origin,
meaning that it has to be produced in Mexico, mainly in the western Mexican state of Jalisco. The states of Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit and Tamaulipas are also acceptable.
BACK TO 14TH CENTURYThe history of tequila began as early as 14th century with the ancient tribe of Mexico;
the Aztec’s who drank beverages made from the agave plant that is used to make tequila.
MEDICINE Tequila was used as a flu remedy during Mexico’s flu epidemic of 1918.
7-12 YEARS !It takes an agave plant approximately 7-12 years to reach a maturity level suitable for
harvesting and use in tequila production.
FIRST TEQUILA EXPORTIn 1873 tequila was first exported to the U.S. by Sauza who sold three barrels.
