generation family ever to go

there.

The week was very cold

and there was a significant

amount of rain, but, we still

went out fishing every day.

The girls caught a lot of

Northern Pike ranging from

four to eight pounds, using

only minnies for bait, along

with a bobber.

On Tuesday, Veda latched

on to one that was 42” long

and weighed 20 pounds.

Come Wednesday, Branejah

reeled in the second big one.

This one was also 42” long

but had a girth of 20” and

weighed 23 pounds – almost

half her weight!

Now, these are big fish for

anyone to land, just imagine

the stamina it took these girls

to reel in fish half their size.

But they did it, it took them a

while, but they reeled in their

own fish with their spinning

rods and we were able to get

them in the landing net.

The last morning of our trip

brought snow, so we pulled

out a day early. It was quite

the experience that year,

both for the girls and me.

Besides fishing, we also

were able to see quite a va-

riety of wildlife during our

stay: several moose, some

bears, beavers, bald eagles

and a wolf. How many five

and six year olds can say

they had an experience like

that! And in addition to all

that, the girls were able to

see themselves on the

camp’s website that summer,

as Bow Narrows used the

picture for advertisement.

“Branejah’s Big Fish”

As written by

Charlie Morrison

It was the last week of May

2009 that my son Robert and

I took two little girls, Veda Pe-

ters and Branejah Ashley,

ages 5 and 6, to Red Lake,

Ontario fishing.

Red Lake is 300 miles

north of International Falls,

Minnesota. Robbie and I

have been going there to a

camp called Bow Narrows

since 1972 moose, bear

hunting and fishing. Brane-

jah is the fourth generation of

my family to go to Bow Nar-

rows Camp, a first fourth

“Snuffy” Update By Kathy Cero

Last issue, Old LycomingTownship Volunteer  Fire De-partment mascot “Snuffy”made a plea to our readers fordonations  toward a new cos-tume—his costume is overtwenty-five years old, outdatedand worn—and  being that nofire company funds are usedfor his upkeep, he relies totally

on support  from the community.“Snuffy” creator Lee Shipe said that donations are slowly

trickling in but it could be a while until the goal of $1,000.00is reached. He hopes that readers will continue to donatetoward a new costume so Snuffy may become as active inthe community as he once was.

Donations can be sent to the Snuffy Fund, in care of theOld Lycoming Township Fire Department, 1600 Dewey Ave,Williamsport, PA  17701.

Look for further updates on Snuffy’s progress in the nextissue of the Post.

The first K9 police dogsince 1996 has been busyfighting crime since earlyspring, according Corpral CarlFinnerty, of the SouthWilliamsport police depart-ment.

After a long period of in-tense training ,“Dany” (pro-nounced Danny) is the hittingthe streets with dog handlerand four-year SouthWilliamsport police veteranPatrolman Devin Thompson.Dany, a Belgian Malinois wasimported from Slovakia andspecially bred for law enforce-ment. Thompson said thatDany’s role serves a dual pur-pose: narcotics detection andstreet patrol. Referring tostreet patrol, Dany is utilizedfor “man tracking”, criminalapprehension, and crowdcontrol. He’s done a great jobso far,” remarked Finnerty.

“Dany is very much a part ofthe police force,” Thompsoncommented. As with policedogs in general, Thompsonexplained that dogs havecharacteristics that enablethem to surpass what hu-mans have the ability to do asit pertains to law enforce-ment. For example, the dognose is by far superior to thehuman nose—it has the abil-ity to detect a lot morescent—and is especially use-ful in narcotics investigations.Speed and agility are a plus, with regard to car searchesand chasing down criminals.Thompson pointed out thatofficer safety is improved byhaving a K9 in tow. “Statisti-cally, people are more afraidof a dog than any law en-forcement weapon we maycarry. Situations becomedeescalated.”

Community donations havebeen instrumental in revivingthe K9 unit and will continueto be tapped as training forDany is ongoing. “Additionaltraining is important becauseit enables Dany to maintain alevel of consistency with hisskills”, Thompson stated.

As previously reported bythe Williamsport Sun-Gazette, there have been anumber of contributors whohave funded the K9 program.“It’s a tight-knit community, and I’m not surprised at theamount of financial helpwe’ve been given. We relyprimarily on donations for theK9 unit,” Thompson said.Donors include Beiter’s HomeCenter, The Southern Grill,Vanemon Oil Co, and theNewberry Independent Club-more commonly known asthe Polish Club.

“We think it’s a goodcause,” said Polish ClubSecretary Mark Lukowsky, re-ferring to a “mutual aid” thatallows Dany to also fightcrime in Williamsport and sur-rounding communities. Headded that the Club has do-nated over 3,000.00 towardthe K9 program.

Not only has Dany workedto improve communities inLycoming County- he hasalso added a spark to the lifeof Officer Thompson. “Danyhas rejuvenated me—it’sbeen a fantastic experience,”he commented.

Donations to the K9 pro-gram are always welcomeand appreciated. Donationscan be made to the Boroughof South Williamsport, 329West Southern Ave, SouthWilliamsport, PA 17702.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questionsabout Safe Driving

*“Sadie Says . . .” is brought to you by the Safe Communities Task Force, whose membersinclude AAA North Penn, AARP, Area Agency on Aging and regional transportation andhighway safety advocates. © 2011 Safe Communities Task Force, LCHIC

“I drive a big car to be safe. With allthat metal, and being a good driver, why do I need to buckle up?”

Think that big car will save you?Regardless of your vehicle’s size, if you don’t

buckle up, you may not survive.Anything that isn’t fastened in your car continues to travel at the samespeed the car was going when it crashed. Unbuckled, your injuries in a30 mph crash would be like falling off a three story building.Think of yourself as an egg in a can. It doesn’t matter if it’s a big canor a small can; if the egg isn’t fastened, when the can crashes the eggis going to crack.Your seatbelt keeps you in the car. If you are ejected, you will probablydie. If going through the windshield doesn’t kill you, hitting the roador getting run over by your own car or other traffic will.

Always Buckle Up – It’s the Law!

Are you an unsafe driver? Are you taking chances with your safety or the safety of your passengersevery time you drive? You could be, if you don’t wear your seatbelt, or insist that everyoneand everything is correctly restrained. Seatbelts save lives.Wear them right, wear them always, and insist everyone, every time bucklesup, and you increase your chances of surviving a crash by over 60%.

By Atlantis Hooper

It just happened about a weekago: my AP Literature students hada paper due on a William Shake-speare play of their choice.

Yes, I explained the assignmentthoroughly using a sample paperthat I had written myself. Yes, I had

g i v e n

them time in class to work on it, al-lowing them to go to the library, thecomputer lab, and any other re-source they wished to visit in orderto look up the Great Bard’s life andworks. Most of them did what Iasked and handed the paper in ontime; except for one female student.

“Can I please have an exten-sion?” she begged me on the veryday the paper was due, musteringup the best sad puppy-dog face she

could. “I had three papers duetoday, and I couldn’t do any

homework at all last nightbecause of a fieldhockey game! It

was away, and wehad to travel an hour toget there!”

Now, you might betempted to stop and

think here. Evenwith no game, what was sheplanning ondoing? Staying

up all night to complete three pa-pers? That’s a tall order even for acollege student seasoned in the artof procrastinating!

However, I had to think it throughfrom her point of view. This sort ofworkload is clearly overwhelmingfor any student, and this girl is onlysixteen years old. Plus, my job as ateacher is to prepare my studentsfor college, right? Well, here aresome preparation tips that will helpyou if you’re faced with this situa-tion:

About two weeks ahead of time, write down every assignment thatyou need to complete, along withevery deadline. If they have differ-ent due dates, begin working onthem in order of their due dates.

If they’re all due on the same day,you need a different kind of plan. One thing you can do is make atimeline: I’ll have my first paper

done by this Friday, the second

paper done by the following Mon-

day, and the third paper done by

next Friday. Or, if that’s too much, stretch all of them out: I will com-

plete half a page of each paper

every single day for the next two

weeks, so that all of my papers are

ready by their deadline. Most stu-dents find that once you get pastyour introduction, writing a paper isrelatively easy if you’ve had enoughpractice.

Ask your teacher(s) for help! I stayafter school every day for a half anhour after the students leave, andlonger if they need me. Most otherteachers will too.

Finally, if you’re still feeling over-whelmed, ask for an extension.Don’t feel guilty about it, either;sometimes high school can behard.

Now, if you actually manage toaccomplish a feat similar to this andhand multiple assignments in onthe same day, I have one last thingto say to you. My grandfather oncegave me a very good piece of ad-vice: Toot your own horn, because

no one else is going to toot it for

you. If you’re going through a roughtime and still managed to hand thatpaper in when it was due, makesure to let your teacher know! Theymight just mention it on a collegerecommendation; admissions offi-cers definitely want to know whatyou’re able to tackle.

LKW Dance Center:

Spreading the Joy of

Dance Since 1982

Faculty credited with studio success

By Kathy Cero

Since its beginning in 1982,LKW dance studio continues topave the way for students to bethe best they can be, and StudioDirector Alison Stroop is quick to

credit the Studio’s faculty andstaff for its ongoing success.“Our students are our top prior-ity”, she emphasized. Our in-structors have solid teachingbackgrounds. For example, shewent on, the newest staff mem-ber, Martin Carrasco, has per-formed with the MetropolitanBallet Company at Lincoln Cen-ter in New York City.

A rich dance history coupledwith years of teaching, is benefi-cial in helping the students to

succeed, and is a trademark ofthe staff there. On that note, sheadded, “We have doubled ournumber of students in the pasttwelve years.”

Through dance, life skills arealso learned. “Students learn dis-cipline,

and time management skills, she said. Increased self-confi-dence and self-esteem are alsoacquired through dance. “I hearfrom parents how much dancehas helped their kids,” Stroop

noted.The dance center keeps up

with current trends and has awide variety of programs includ-ing Mommy and me, Zumba, arecreational dance class and acompetitive dance team.

The staff there is alsocommunity-oriented. Besidesperforming at the Relay for life inJune, Stroop noted the studentsalso raised 695.00 for the WeisChildren’s Hospital at the “Powerof Dance” competition recently.

Thanksgiving?By the Recluse of River Valley

Thanksgiving is almost here, andit’s one of my least favorite holidays.I’m not against the message ofThanksgiving; we all have some-thing we need to be thankful for, even if we didn’t get our deer thisyear. I’m just so befuzzled as to how a

holiday that started with Pilgrimsand Indians could end up a footballmarathon (I have to admit I’m guiltyof this), don’t-bother-me-I’m-cooking-all-day epic moodiness (inthe wife’s case), or—worst of all—asnooze-a-thon.It’s the darned woman next door

that has this last problem. Everyyear, she sleeps through Thanksgiv-ing so she can hit the mall (dearLord!) at 4 A.M. or whatever insanetime they open. I don’t understandthis concept, and I probably neverwill. I think it’s sad to think about

what Thanksgiving has turned into;can you imagine the Pilgrims bom-barding the general store even be-fore sunup to grab the latestbutter churner? Thank Godmy wife doesn’t get in-volved in all of thatnonsense.I understand

the tempta-tion. Snag-ging thel a t e s tt e c hg i z m oat 97%o f fd o e ss e e mlike agood rea-son to get up off thesofa. But when youhave to fight 500 otherpeople just to get one, that’s whereI draw the line. I’d rather wait six

We all need to stop for a moment andbe thankful for what we have. Life is tooshort and so many of us take too muchfor granted; from the really big things inlife that effect us all as a whole, rightdown to the very small but unique thingsthat effect us as individuals. Let’s startwith this wonderful country that we livein. We live in America people! That’sthe land of the free, the home of thebrave. How great is that?! Whether youare a Democrat or a Republican, youhave the distinct honor of living in acountry where you have so many free-doms, and yet we all seem to want somuch more. We demand so muchmore. Maybe we all need to step backfor a moment and put things in to per-spective – be happy and grateful for theliberties we do have. And speaking of

America, we have but one President andright now that person is PresidentBarack Obama. There always seems tobe so much criticism and negativityspewed no matter who stands before usas our leader – it’s disheartening. Weas a whole will never be in total agree-ment at the same time on who should bein charge of our wonderful country. But,whoever that may be, for Heaven’ssakes, we should all be supporting himwhile he is in charge. There is an elec-tion every four years when you can re-elect someone new. Think about that, every four years we have the privilege toselect a new leader. How many othercountries can say that? Not spendingtoo much time discussing our politicalstance, let’s focus on our jobs (for thoseof us lucky enough to have one). Many

of us go to work each day mumblingunder our breath how much we hate ourjob – well isn’t that just terrible – that wehave a job to hate?! Be thankful for yourjob and the income it provides howeverbig or small that may be, for you may nothave it tomorrow. Let’s move on to fam-ily: Moms, Dads, Brothers, Sisters,Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Grandparents,Grandchildren, Best Friends…the per-son standing right there next to you.Reach out and embrace them, love andcherish them, appreciate them, for to-morrow they might not be there and itwill be too late. Be thankful you have aroof over your head, food on your table, clothes on your back. There are thosea lot less fortunate. So many things wecomplain about, forget about and takefor granted. We are always asking for

more or what’s in it for us? Well, wouldn’t it be great if just for a day wecould be thankful for everything we dohave and realize how lucky we truly are.And wouldn’t it be even greater if wecould extend that one day in to anotherand another and another….

Life is too short – enjoy it, live it, givethanks. Contribute to your community,to your country. Help your neighbor. Dosomething for free, do it anonymously.Feed a dog. Play with a child. Callsomeone you have been meaning tocall. Forgive and forget (or at least for-give). Be thankful and help others to bethankful, today and always.

How to Roast Your TurkeyTurkey Tip: Rack 'em UpTurkeys cook best if hot air is allowed to circulate underneath and all aroundthem. Setting the turkey on a roasting rack is key. The fat drips down and canbe collected in the roasting pan. The rack lets the air circulate and also keepsthe bird from soaking in its own fat.To prepare the turkey for roasting, first remove the giblets (and save for gravyor stuffing). Next, rinse the bird inside and out and pat dry with paper towels.

• If you are stuffing the bird, stuff it loosely, allowing about ½ to ¾ cup stuff-ing per pound of turkey.

• Brush the skin with melted butter or oil. Tie drumsticks together with string(for stuffed birds only).

• Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh. The ther-mometer should point towards the body, and should not touch the bone.

• Place the bird on a rack in a roasting pan, and into a preheated 350 de-gree F (175 degrees C) oven. Use the chart below to estimate the timerequired for baking.

• Bake until the skin is a light golden color, and then cover loosely with afoil tent. During the last 45 minutes of baking, remove the foil tent tobrown the skin. Basting is not necessary, but helps promote even brown-ing.

• The turkey is done when the internal temperature reaches 165 degreesF (75 degrees C) at the thigh.
