Two Day National Seminar on Social Discrimination and Media in Contemporary Indian society Organised by, Shivaji University, Kolhapur. on rd th 23 & 24 February 2015 Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Shivaji University, Kolhapur is a multi-disciplinary teaching and research centre established in April, 2007. The Centre does research and teaching in the area of social exclusion, discriminatory studies and inclusive policies. Centre also concentrates on conceptualizing and contextualizing discrimination, social exclusion and inclusion based on caste, ethnicity, gender and religion, etc. Thus Centre aims at studying, understanding and providing solutions to various social, economic, political, cultural, religious and educational problems faced by the marginalized sections of the Society. Media is considered as fourth pillar of democracy in India. Media plays a very crucial role in today’s society. Media is the most powerful tool of communication in the emerging world, which is increasing the awareness and currently st providing platform to the society within the society. In 21 century which also an age of information and digitisation every individual is keen to be updated with the latest developments in all walks of life. The various forms of media such as print, electronic media including social and other mass media aim to reach out to a very large mass of the society. Mass media is now considered as an effective tool for advocating issues of social concerns. In Indian democracy media has a duty which is profoundly connected with the socio- economic conditions. However, the role of media in a democratic system has been widely debated lately. Indian media initially thought to be an agent of ushering in social change. In recent times media has been subjected to lot of criticism for the manner in which they have disregarded their obligation to social responsibility. In contemporary scenario two different schools of thoughts are being discussed rigorously. First, discrimination Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, About Seminar in media, According to a survey conducted by Centre for Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), it brings out that upper caste men hold over 70% of the key posts across newsrooms in the nation. The OBCs share just 4% in the Indian newsrooms while Christians and Sikhs have a slightly better representation. But, the worst scenario emerges in the case of SCs and STs. Less number of Dalit journalists is the outcome of a conscious discrimination by the management of a media. It has been reproducing the social prejudice in the content of the media for the last few decades. Second, No spaces for advocating issues of socially excluded, discriminated and marginalised communities in mainstream media. Most of the media has been elite oriented and upper class monopolised. Media has been under serious criticism from activists and reformers for being Manuwadi. In the context of the Social exclusion and inclusion media can play vital role but there is need to understand operational issues and discuss those in the light of these two schools of thoughts. 1. To initiate a dialogue on the issue of social discrimination and media in contemporary Indian society. 2. To sensitize the scholars, researchers, academicians, experts, leaders, journalists on the issues of media and social discrimination in contemporary Indian society. 3. To discuss the role of media to advocate issues of socially excluded communities . · Indian Media and its contribution in social inclusion process. · Role of media in advocating and addressing the issues of Dalits and Tribes. · Role of media in advocating and addressing the issues of marginalised sections of the society. · Media and issues of discriminatory society. · Job market discrimination at media houses. · Media advocacy and challenges in the context of Indian society · Role of Media in upliftment of marginal section of the society.
