Due to your hard work many families from the local community extremely benefitted. Also, a special thanks to the hard work of Brent Woodmansee, Joe Boysen, Katie DeWood, Beth Fassburg, and the Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation who generously gave ASDA a $15,000 grant to create and host the event. It was great to see the Faculty and students come together to serve the community. When speaking with patients and parents, they were thoroughly impressed with the passion our students demonstrated towards educating them about prevention and dentistry. Some facts about the event: - Over 306 limited oral exams - Over 245 fluoride applications- Over 230 prophys - Over 803 sealants - Including the parents and children we provided over 153 hours worth of oral hygiene and prevention instructions - Total valued services were worth over $110,000 We could not have asked for a better result from our first event! ASDA’s next event will be 2 nd Annual Give Kids A Smile on February 18, 2012! We hope to increase the number of children seen and schedule over 400 children. With all four classes, we have the capacity to treat even more children than the first GKAS. If you have any suggestions on how to improve Super Sealant Saturday for next year or if you are interested in helping to plan and organize GKAS, email Christen Musuraca at [email protected]. In August, Dr. Gary DeWood of Spear Education at the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry led a course for students from our ASDA chapter on photography in dentistry. His wife, Dr. Cheryl DeWood, and Dr. Lee Ann Brady also shared their wealth of knowledge about using photography in the dental practice. Mostly D4 students were present, along with a handful of D3 and D2 students. There were 36 seats available to us in the course, held in the Scottsdale  Center  for  Dentistry’s  beautiful  facilities.

We were also given the opportunity to learn how to take such photographs, using each other as models and assistants. We used SLR cameras with ring flashes to take the photos, and were given the basics on how to read a histogram for a photograph. Taking photos so close up and using mirrors is harder than I thought it would be! There are certain settings at which the camera should be used, and physical features of the subject that should be captured for each different angle that is photographed. It was a great experience to introduce us to photography in dentistry, especially since each suite in the clinic will have its own camera soon.

Dr. DeWood focused on why photography is so beneficial in a dental practice, and not just for orthodontists and esthetic cases. Dental photographs  aren’t  just  for  presenting  cases  to  colleagues  and  publishing in papers. Photographs can be used to more effectively communicate with our patients. Many times patients can feel confused about radiographs, even when we try to explain it in terminology with which they are familiar. When they look into their own mouths, they don’t  see  everything  we  can  see  with  mirrors  and  loupes.  With  the  proper photography equipment, including accessories such as mirrors and cheek retractors, we can present the patient with images of their own mouths that they can use to point out their own concerns while we show them our concerns as well. Effective communication helps the patient develop ownership of his or her own dental health. Photographs are also effective communication between dentists and our labs.

Look  for  the  Spear  Education  and  the  Scottsdale  Center  events  listed  in  the  “Coming  Events”  section.

The American Dental Political Action Committee is the national organization that gives dentists influence in Congress. Similar organizations exist in each state. We students have the opportunity to join ADPAC and begin to share our voice in national issues. This coming spring we will have an ADPAC membership drive. We hope to have Rep. Dr. Paul  Gosar,  D.D.S.  (Creighton,  ’85)  come  and  visit us for that event to sit down with a few of our class. We will also be honored to have Dr. Rob Robertson, chief of staff for Dr. Gosar, speak to us that same week. They will speak to us about why politics are a necessary part of our careers.

ADPAC has recently been involved in landmark legislation. The national healthcare bill was supposed to have included dental care in it. However, because of the high participation that the ADA has, and its voice through ADPAC, dentistry was not put into the Affordable Care Act. This protects us dentists by allowing us to function as independents, not bound to government oversight and regulation. Currently, ADPAC is involved in keeping dentistry tax-free, allowing dentists to write off equipment purchases, and attempting to prevent the defunding of dental initiatives while the congressional budget super-committee debates what to cut from the national budget.

St.  Mary’s  Food  Drive  and  Pumpkin  Pie  Eating  Contest

Winter Holiday Oral B Smart Series 5000 Electric Toothbrush Sale

To top off the end of fall quarter, ASDA held a pumpkin pie eating contest and canned food drive to collect donations for  St.  Mary’s  Food  Bank.  Both  competitions  were  a  battle  between  the  classes.  The  winners  of  the  pumpkin  pie-eating contest earned bragging rights, while the class that collected the most food items won a pizza party.

The D3 class of 2013 prevailed by winning both the pie-eating contest and the food drive! The friendly competition was a great chance for the classes to come together and hundreds of food items were donated to the less fortunate for the upcoming holiday season. Thank you to everyone who brought donations!!
