DESIGN FOR SUSTAINABILITY UNAM Students Name: FEDERICO CAPOGROSSI School: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) Degree: Industrial Designer About Me: I am a few steps away from finishing my thesis to get the ID degree. I am the R+D Coordinator in Cerraduras y Candados Phillips, an ASSA ABLOY Group Company. I have been working in the security and access control field for two years now. Despite the regulations and the environmental policies and control carried out in-house, the metal-mechanic industry still has a very important environmental impact. This situation only reaffirmed my concern for sustainability. On the other hand, is the great opportunity to work hand by hand with Berkeley and with an interdisciplinary UNAM team. Name: LUCÍA ÁLVAREZ School: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) Degree: Industrial Designer About Me: I was born in México City in 1982, the year that Pelé retired from soccer. I’m an 8th semester, Industrial Design student at CIDI - UNAM (Industrial Design Research Center) in México City. My main intrest in design is sustainability and has been for a couple of years now. Since I was a little I’ve been concerned about social problems and I have found that through design and stustainabilty I can make a contribution to solve them. I also believe that teaching is an other way of contributing to develop a new way of thinking. I have helped as a techer’s asistant in my university for the “environmental design” course, and amongst many other things, I plan to teach in the future. I was in Finland working on a textile design project aiming to develop a series of sustainable objects/garments to bring urban societies closer to nature and encourage the reflection of the importance of it as well as the urgent need to revaluate it.

Name: MASAHIKO RIVASSchool: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM)Degree: Mechatronics EngineeringEmail: [email protected]: (044) 55-3716-7974Skype: masahiko.rAbout Me: I would like to be called simply Masa. I am Half Japanese, half Mexican, and raised up here in Mexico. I'm studying at the moment Mechatronics engineering and although this career has no direct application to the project itself, I'm really eager to take part of it. Reasons: A broader spectrum of knowledge, and to start working with students outside the conventional Mexican education. About myself, well, backpacking is my pleasure, travelling with really low budget and getting to know and live within the society I am at. I pursue all kind of arts, from jewelry making, to drawing and music production.

Name: JAVIER AVILASchool: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM)Degree: Mechanical EngineeringEmail: [email protected] Phone: (044) 55-2879-2848Skype: javier.avila20About Me: I belong to the ecodesign team in the Engineering School at UNAM. I’m a friendly person, well kind of serious at the beginning but really nice. Well this is my last semester in the school, my interest just like all the engineers in the world are cars and tech. In one year from now I would like to do a master degree abroad in materials or design. Also I would really like to develop a sustainability project which contributes to improve our well-being not only because the program requires it but also because it’s necessary to improve our world.

Name: ARTURO BASTIDAS CRUZSchool: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM)Degree: Mechatronics EngineeringEmail: [email protected]: (044) 55-1475-2362Skype: arbac84About Me: I am a ninth-semester student of Mechatronics Engineering at the Engineering Faculty of the UNAM located in the same city. In order to find solutions to fix many of today’s problems, it is necessary to integrate interdisciplinary work groups. Engineers, designers, architects, etc; more than ever before work as a team to find sustainable solutions. As one grows up, you realize all the problems that trouble the world and somehow one always wants to try and help. Engineering gives you many tools that, applied to these types of projects, help the construction for a better world. Having the opportunity to work this way in addition to be in collaboration with Berkeley is a truly unique opportunity we must seize and take advantage of as much as possible.

Name: ALDO VARGASSchool: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM)Degree: Mechatronics EngineeringAbout Me: I always wanted to be an engineer, since I was a little boy I get with computers, cables, moving parts, mechanisms, etc. Another passion, besides engineering, is bikes, I ride bikes since I was 10 years old, I loved everything that has to be with bikes, since the motion, the theory, mechanics, races, different types of bikes. I live in a forest, it could sound weird, but I live outside the city, in one of the mountains, it’s call Ajusco, it’s pretty famous around here, because it’s a good area for many kinds of recreation, and its perfect for me, because I can practice motocross or enduro every weekend. One thing I would like to say is that I want to be an astronaut, perhaps in your country is very common, but in here it’s a little odd, so people that don’t understand me or know me, laughs of me. I always liked to construct things, since I was very little I became fan of the legos, what can i say? I am a lego kid. Videogames has been a part of my life, since the early consoles, as atari, up to xbox, but I play most in my computer, the latest games that I play are, half life 2 ep1, Halo 2, World of Warcraft, I invested a lot of time in WoW, lol, it’s a good game.
