The Fr McNally Chamber Orchestra

Orchestra in Residence, Dundalk Institute of Technology

The Fr McNally Chamber Orchestra was founded by Briege McGoldrick, a past pupil of Father Brendan McNally, in April 2010. This string Chamber Orchestra has twenty-nine members most of whom are past pupils of Father Brendan McNally.

Briege McGoldrick was the leader of Father McNally’s Redeemer Youth Orchestra during the 1980s. HisFather McNally’s Redeemer Youth Orchestra during the 1980s. His McNally’s Redeemer Youth Orchestra during the 1980s. His vision and judgement in choosing Briege as the leader of his orchestra was later confirmed when Briege was also chosen to lead the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland. Having finished her studies Briege played professionally in the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and National Symphony Orchestra for over a decade. In 2006 Briege returned to Dundalk where she began tutoring student violinists in Ceol Oirghialla, the Department of Music and Creative Media of Dundalk Institute of Technology.

Briege was aware that there were many highly talented string players in Dundalk, many of whom were past pupils of Father McNally. She contacted as many past pupils as possible in order to establish the first everFather McNally. She contacted as many past pupils as possible in order to establish the first ever McNally. She contacted as many past pupils as possible in order to establish the first ever adult chamber orchestra in Co. Louth. Briege approached Father McNally to ask his permission to name theFather McNally to ask his permission to name the McNally to ask his permission to name the Chamber Orchestra in his honour. The orchestra needed a central location to rehearse and Co. Louth VEC generously offered rehearsal space in its Head Office where the orchestra has rehearsed every Friday night for the past year.

The Fr McNally Chamber Orchestra was officially launched in September 2010 in Bush Post Primary School by Dr Eibhlís Farrell, Head of Music and Creative Media at Dundalk Institute of Technology. The packed audience gave the orchestra’s performance a standing ovation. Indeed Father McNally himself also receivedFather McNally himself also received McNally himself also received a standing ovation when he rose to his feet to take his bow! On the night Dr Eibhlís Farrell described FatherFather McNally as ‘a living legend and a national treasure’ which really captured the wonderful contribution he has made to music education in Co. Louth, Ireland and on the international stage.

The Orchestra’s Gala Debut Concert took place in the Redemptorist Church in February 2011. The remarkable standard of playing achieved by the Orchestra is shown by the fact that Michael d’Arcy, (Leader of Camerata Ireland) and Karl Sweeney (also a member of Camerata Ireland), agreed to perform as soloists with the orchestra in the beautiful Double Violin Concerto in D Minor by J.S. Bach.

Karl Sweeney is also a past pupil of Father McNally and the Orchestra’s Debut Concert was particularlyFather McNally and the Orchestra’s Debut Concert was particularly McNally and the Orchestra’s Debut Concert was particularly special for Karl as his mother Yvonne, Father McNally’s first ever pupil, is the Orchestra’s Co-Leader, two ofFather McNally’s first ever pupil, is the Orchestra’s Co-Leader, two of McNally’s first ever pupil, is the Orchestra’s Co-Leader, two of his sisters, Claire and Mary-Jane, his two Aunts, Teresa and Jayne, his Uncle Andrew and three first cousins all play in the orchestra too!

Ceol Oirghialla has a dynamic and vibrant approach to the study of music and offers exciting and innovative programmes to both undergraduates and postgraduates in a proactive centre of teaching and learning, research and performance. We aim to provide a distinctive and pioneering environment for advanced study, performance and research while recognising and engaging with the diversity of musics and technologies.

Now housed in the PJ Carroll Building, this new facility affords students of Ceol Oirghialla access to a range of sophisticated equipment and dedicated teaching spaces which provides our staff and students with a rich musical and creative environment for research and performance.

Taught programmes currently on offer in Ceol Oirghialla include BA (Hons) in Applied Music, BA in Music and Audio Production, MA/MSc in Music Technology and MA/PGDip in Traditional Music Studies. Our programmes offer training in a range of music specialisms and attract both Irish and international students. Plans for future programmes include a PGDip and MA in Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy and MA in Performance Studies.

Our BA (Hons) in Applied Music is a four-year degree programme which encompasses a blend of musicology, music technology, composition, ethnomusicology and performance, and which balances the practical with thetheoretical. After being exposed to a rich and varied range of subjects in first and second year, third and fourth year students have the opportunity to specialise in one of the following areas: solo performance in classical, contemporary, popular or traditional music, music education and community music, music technology, ethnomusicology or composition. While the programme is both challenging and enriching, performance is an important part of our degree programme, and students are given the opportunity to take part in various music ensembles including music theatre/opera, guitar ensemble, brass ensemble, rock/pop and Irish traditional groups, choir and orchestra. In addition, students perform at a range of formal and informal events in the Institute and externally. Our students have been honoured by invitations from Lord and Lady Rosse to perform a mid-summer concert at Birr Castle and from HE President McAleese to perform at Áras an Uachtaráin. Other recent performance venues have included the Ulster Hall, Belfast

in a joint concert with the South Ulster Youth Orchestra in a special performance of Gullion Tales, a commissioned work for the choir and orchestra by composer Brian Irvine, and performances in Mantua and Cambridge University at the invitation of the University Ireland Society, while our fourth year traditional group performed at the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Malta in 2008 at the invitation of HE Dr Edward Fenech Adami.

Music Theatre is one of the most popular activities and the provision of a fully equipped dance studio and dedicated performance spaces has enhanced the opportunities for dance choreography and creative movement. Recent productions include La Belle Hélène, Evita, The Gondoliers and Ó Riada sa Gaiety. Ó Riada sa Gaiety was a special performance celebrating the 40th anniversary of the iconic performance in 1969, initiated by members of Éigse Oirialla on the occasion of Peadar Ó Doirnín’s Bicentenary. The commemoration of this historic event represents Ceol Oirghialla’s ongoing commitment to the preservation of the rich cultural and historic landscape of Oriel within which DkIT is situated, a region which has always been a centre of a wealth of music and literary activity. As part of our ongoing community outreach commitment and enrichment of the cultural life of the wide region, students and staff of Ceol Oirghialla have performed recent Christmas concerts in St Joseph’s Redemptorist Church, Dundalk to packed audiences.

At Ceol Oirghialla we recognise the importance of giving students opportunities to engage with professional musicians working in the music industry and for this we host a regular guest lecture and masterclass series. Through our partnerships with our sister-universities in Norway, Germany, Italy and the UK, many of our students have taken the opportunity to spend a semester abroad, experiencing musical traditions in Germany and Norway while we have hosted students and staff from both Stord Haugesund University and Telemark University for joint performances at DkIT. This semester we welcome students and staff from Artesis University College,Antwerp and Stord Haugesund University College, Norway who will join with students and staff on an Erasmus Intensive Programme hosted by Ceol Oirghialla. Additionally, the student body at Ceol Oirghialla has been greatly enriched by a number of international students enrolled on our programmes. Last semester we hosted

Ceol Oirghialla

two visiting professors: Professor Richard Chrisman from Rutgers University and Professor Ray James from Baker University in Kansas. Professor James will be returning with a group of students from Baker University in March for a series of performances.

Our imaginative undergraduate programme has facilitated students to progress to a diverse range of careers including first and second level teaching, composition, performance, music technology, arts administration and business management with many students undertaking postgraduate study at a range of universities in England and Ireland.

In September 2011 we took in our first cohort of students on our new BA in Music and Audio Production. This programme has been designed to strengthen students understanding and awareness of a wide range of aspects of Music Production. Students will develop faculties of critical, technical and artistic judgment, both in applying their own skills and knowledge, and in judging the physical and intellectual products of others. There will be opportunities for students to gain valuable practical experience working with musicians in recording studio environments which is paramount to learning and developing the necessary skill-sets required of the modern music producer.

In addition to our undergraduate teaching, Ceol Oirghialla has a large and vibrant community of postgraduate students enrolled on our MA by Research, MA in Music Technology, MSc in Music Technology and PhD programmes, and the teaching on these courses is enhanced by the research expertise of our staff. Our research activities cover a comprehensive range of areas including practice-based research, performance and conducting studies, composition, music technology, ethnomusicology, musicology and education and community music studies. A range of research partnerships have been developed, most significantly our involvement in An Foras Feasa research partnership with NUI Maynooth, St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra and Dublin City University, and, in collaboration with the Contemporary Music Centre Dublin, DkIT is a lead partner in a major digitisation programme, the Irish Composers Project which was launched in May 2011.

The firm establishment of Ionad Taighde Ceoil, Centre for Research in Music, will ensure that our research activities will continue to gain national and international recognition while also underpinning the teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. A significant achievement was that the first two PhDs to graduate in the Institute in 2009 were two music postgraduate students. In June 2012 Ceol Oirghialla will host the Tenth Annual Society for Musicology in Ireland Conference.

Recent student successes include performances of student compositions at the Contemporary Music Centre 2011 New Music Marathon held at University of Ulster in April while MA in Composition student Patrick Connolly won the Seán Ó Riada Trophy Competition at the 2011 Cork International Choral Festival with his composition Geimhridh and Luke Bermingham was awarded 1st prize in the Council of Heads of Ireland Musicology Competition.

In May 2011 the Fr McNally Chamber Orchestra was appointed Orchestra in Residence in DkIT and we look forward to our ongoing collaborations with the Orchestra.

Since its establishment in 2003, Ceol Oirghialla has firmly established itself on the cultural map of third and fourth-level education in Ireland, and along with the recent foundation of the Atlantic Academy of the Arts, DkIT will continue to be a leading provider of music education in Ireland and contribute to the preservation and promotion of the rich cultural landscape of Oriel.

The recently established Atlantic Academy of the Arts in the Department of Music and Creative Media at DkIT is a new initiative dedicated to enhancing the educational experiences of music and creative media students. One method of achieving this is by providing internships in America in the creative industries sector at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The programme also aims to forge close partnerships with American institutions encouraging student and lecturer exchanges and joint music and creative media research projects. The Atlantic Academy of the Arts will contribute to the development of a vibrant economy in the creative industries in the Oriel region.

DkIT’s first USA Internship Programme got off to a great start last Summer when two lucky students, Sean Smyth and Keith Brady, qualified for an all expenses paid Internship at two of America’s biggest Irish festivals in Milwaukee and St Paul’s, Minnesota.

While they availed of the opportunity to participate in all aspects of event management, their specialist skills in creative media, developed over their 4 year studies at DkIT, were firmly tested. Reflecting on his internship at the Irish Fair of Minnesota St. Paul, August 12–14, Seán, from Scotstown, Co. Monaghan enthused: ‘The internship truly was a once in a life time opportunity for me. The people I met over there are amazing. I’ve made some new friends and I look forward to returning when I can! It was simply an incredible experience that I won’t soon forget’.

Keith, from Ballyjamesduff Co. Cavan was similarly overwhelmed: ‘I am really grateful to Atlantic Academy for giving me this opportunity and hope that students can continue to gain similar experiences for many years to come. I believe this will be very beneficial to my career in the future and someday hope to return to Milwaukee’.

The Academy is an internal company within DkIT dedicated to expanding the job prospects of students from the Department of Music and Creative Media. Seán and Keith were selected from an interview process open to all Music and Creative Media students. This year the Academy hopes to significantly expand the number of USA internships year, open to all 3rd and 4th year Music & Creative Media students at DkIT.
