CER of Telecom Industry Submitted By : Deepak kumar Aman kumar Sinha Poulami Ghosh Niserta PattnaikMarch 4, 20141Submitted To : Prof. Ansu AbrahamCER Of Telecom IndustryIt includes the relevant interpretation of the TRAI recommendations , current practices of Green Environment and the Associated Issues.

Carbon emission Associated with the power sources used to power the telecom equipment power Need , so finding Solution for these Impacts.March 4, 20142

Negative Environment Impact :During the manufacturing process the exposure of workers to toxic metals and chemicals like lead, cadmium, mercury, and poly vinyl chlorides (PVCs) are still prevalent in black market cell phones, and often make their way to open air dumps Group of Swiss researchers found that 40-50% of the environmental impacts over the entire life of a cell phone occur during the single process of manufacturing printed wiring boards and integrated circuits.

Continued. In just one year, it is estimated that one cell phone uses the energy equivalent to 32 gallons of gas, and emits 112 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Every year, 140,000,000 cell phones (thats 4 per second!) will make their way into a landfill, where they will collectively leach 80,000 pounds of lead into the earth and groundwater supply of surrounding communities.

It is estimated that over a 100kg of Mine waste is produced in order to extract the gold for the circuit board of Just one mobile phone. March 4, 20144Changes to overcome the problemsProcess based Changes:The Apple make agreement with manufacturing partners to eliminate toxic elements from their products. Apple iPhone is well known for the eco-friendly process it carries out during manufacturing. The latest model of Apple iPhone is PVC free which also includes bromine-free PCBs, mercury-free LCD display and arsenic-free display glass.

Continued..Nokia has banned the use of Beryllium Oxide since 2004 in all new products.

Use of Phthalates in Nokias products has been restricted since 2005 under EU regulation.

Newly released devices, chargers and handsets are PVC free since the beginning of 2006.

On November 2008, Nokia launched its first device free of brominated compounds, chlorinated flame retardants and antimony trioxide.

Nokia C7 is the industry first device to use bio paints.

March 4, 20146ContinuedLead free solders be used for electrode terminals of the parts and inside of the parts.

Ericsson and telecommunications provider TeliaSonera work proactively to reduce use of hazardous substances.

Well ahead of EU rules, Ericsson started to migrate its entire product portfolio to lead-free soldering.

TeliaSonera began its transition ahead of legislation and required Ericsson to deliver lead-free soldered products with the same functionality and reliability as before.

March 4, 20147Product Base Changes :

Nokia India, created smaller packaging that uses 54 per cent less materials.

By 2007 end, Nokia shipped 250 million phones using this compact packaging, resulting in 5,000 fewer trucks being needed to distribute products around the world and creating financial savings of up to Rs 6,560 crore.

Nokia accessory packaging has been trimmed to use 60 per cent less plastic while the cardboard in packaging has been made thinner.

Continued.Apples 21.5-inch iMac is designed with 50 per cent less material and generates 35 per cent fewer carbon emissions.Apple says it is more powerful and has a much larger screen than the first-generation, 15-inch iMac.

By reducing MacBook packaging 53 per cent between 2006 and 2010, Apple ship 80% more boxes in each airline shipping container. That saves one 747 flight for every 23,760 units they ship.

March 4, 201411ContinuedAccording to the US mobile operator, Sprint, all accessories packaging is 20% to 40% smaller than previous accessory packaging, which Sprint estimates will save 647 tons of waste annually. Better yet, these green packaging will also result in a 35% reduction in accessory packaging costs for the operator, or the equivalent of US$2.1 million in savings annually.

Management base Changes

In December 2000, telecommunications hardware and software supplier Marconi at their Liverpool, UK facility installed an auto waste-to-heat recovery system to burn waste and convert the heat to usable energy. The benefits included less landfill, "free" hot water and lower carbon dioxide emissions from the reduction in fuel transportation. Samsung Reclaim is a model which can be said as 80% recyclable, since it is made up of bio-plastics extracted from corn. In Verizon, Over 18,000 tons of office paper and cardboard were recycled in 2007.

March 4, 201413TRAIBy 2015, all mobile phones should be free of brominates and chlorinated compounds and antimony trioxide in accordance with the e-waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2010, proposed by the Ministry of Environment and Forests to be followed by all telecom manufacturers, as and when notified. (Para: 4.18)

Universal charger: for product reuse

Several top handset makers including Nokia have agreed to develop a universal charger for the European market. This also means considerably less electronic waste, because people will no longer have to throw away chargers when buying new phones.Signatories include Apple, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung, SonyEricsson, Texas Instruments.

March 4, 201416

Continued. In January 2009 Nokia, started a pilot that gave customers the option of buying mobile devices without chargers. This pilot was conducted with N79 in Nokia online stores in UK, Spain, Italy and France. By offering a device without a charger, Nokia was :-Able to reduce packaging ,Minimize the use of raw materials , Minimize energy consumption in the production phase and ,Reduce transportation.
