Your candidates and what they said

Luke Evetts is standing for the conservatives

He has dyslexia and had extra help at school, heplays golf and cricket.

Luke is training to be a solicitor

Amazingly if you have a disability you are twice aslikely to be unemployed its very shocking and Ithink there is a latent sense of discrimination

amongst employers against people with learningdisabilities and I would personally like to advocaterewriting the disability regulations to ensure, to tryand stamp out that latent discrimination

Richard Boudier is standing for the Labourparty.

He talked about how the labour party has been ingovernment and has increased protection fordisabled people

The labour party want the UK to be the world leaderin rights.

He talked about the independent living strategy thisis for England only.

He talked about carers and said, those who care fordisabled people are not just supporting thoseindividuals, but are supporting the whole society, byensuring that individuals are supported to play theirpart in all of our communities

Penri James is the candidate for Plaid Cymru.

He talked about how he grew up in the local area.

He is a lecturer at Aberystwyth University. Heteaches farming.

He has learnt to work with people with differentdisabilities.

He thinks it is really important that education andsociety adapt to meet the needs of everyone.

Ceredigion relies a lot on public sector for jobs andservice. (This means jobs in the NHS and assemblyoffices as well as Ceredigion Council services likesocial services and education).

He is worried that other parties from London aregoing to cut the funding and the services will be cut.

Mark Williams is the Liberal Democratcandidate.

He was the MP for the last five years. Before being an MP he was a primary school teacher.

He thinks everyone has skills and abilities and theseneed to be encouraged.

He has supported people with learning disabilitieswho have been discriminated against in education, employment and benefits, and it needs to stop.

There are 1.3 million people in Britain with specificlearning difficulties; there are 6 million people if youadd in all their carers that need support as well. Its ahuge body of opinion and government need to wake

up to their responsibilities to those people.

    First question was from William

How can you ensure that people with learning

    disabilities get employment?

    Mark Williams

Remembered a supported employment scheme called Cadwynau. Thishas finished now.

I think the first thing we need to do, and what that scheme tried to dowas to give people the skills and the training they need in a supportiveand sympathetic environment, and encourage employers to look to theirresponsibilities to take on people from across the spectrum.

We need to be encouraging employers in a much more proactive basis totake people on.

    Penri James

What we must realise is that everybody has a skill right, and everybody

can put their hand and turn their hand to something.

I believe strongly that everybody has a skill, and what the duty on us aspoliticians and the county council and on education establishments is todevelop these skills, and we should ensure that everybody has access tothese courses and that they can then gain employment.

    Richard Boudier

Here with the labour party we are basically determined to see thateveryone who can work in is in employment. We promise to support the people into work if they wish to work we willensure that more disabled people and people with health conditions whowant to work are supported in doing so.

It is everybodys human and civil right to work and the labour party are

    committed to ensuring this.

Richard said more people with disabilities are now working; this was forall disabilities, not learning disabilities.

    Luke Evetts

Luke talked about his Wifes brother who has Aspergers. This wasntnoticed and so he didnt have help in school and didnt do well in examsand now isnt working.

Luke talked about teachers needing more training to work with peoplewith disabilities in school.

Luke talked about employers willing to offer people training andexperience but not a real job.

I think we really need to take a long hard look at our discriminationlegislation, and I think we need to get rid of this latent discrimination, its not direct discrimination but its there, we need to try and eradicatethat completely from employers.

Second question from Arleen Bullying in schools when you have a learningdisability has to stop how will you make sureteachers know its not ok?

    Luke Evetts

All teachers know bullying is not ok.

Luke talked about problems teachers have with parents. This may makethem scared to stop bullies.

    Richard Boudier

Teachers know its wrong and they know its not right but they dontknow what to do.

    Teachers need better training.

All teachers know its not right. I hope they do or they are in the wrongprofession.

    Penri James

Bullying is wrong bullying must stop and bullying must be eradicatedfrom schools and the work place as well.Teachers have been trained but it is also about changing a cultureparents also have a duty to stop bullying.

    Mark Williams

Teachers cant work if you have bullies in your class it is completelyunacceptable.

Mark talked about a school with a buddy system to support pupils.

Parents need to be held to account for the behaviour.

Third question from Peter I am really angry about not being able to work Ihave tried again and again, what can you do toconvince me its worth keeping trying?

    Richard Boudier

Richard talked about the new work choice programme for disabledpeople that will support people into work. This starts in October.

It is very hard and it shouldnt be very hard.

Work step and work prep schemes in the past havent worked thats whythere will be a new scheme.

    Luke Evetts

Its a very sad fact that people with disabilities are twice as likely to beunemployed as anyone else.

Employers dont understand their obligations and duties underemployment law.

Luke wants much simpler laws so they can see what their rights are.

Employers need to be trained to work with disabled people.

    Penri James

You have schemes for this and that what tends to happen is the schemefinishes the job finishes.

The government schemes last for short periods we want jobs for lives.

Schemes have too many rules and restrictions

Government has a lot to learn from you as you have experience of these

    schemes.

    Mark Williams

Everyone has the right to decent education or decent work

People have real difficulties with the benefits system as well.

Mark has worked with autism Cymru to ensure that the jobcentre+ staffunderstand autism.

Its not the staffs fault it is the managers.

There are lots of barriers such as telephone interviews.

The compulsion has to be on employers.

This means new laws to make companies employ you.

You have been let down by the system the system needs to change.

Fourth question from Huw We want Hate crime to be taken seriously bypolice, what will you do to make sure it is?

    Penri James

The police have a duty to enforce any crime

I would encourage the police to engage with you.

I am confident the police would act here in Ceredigion. You need to feelconfident to report it.

We need to make them accountable to make sure they stop it.

    Mark Williams

Many people who come to see me havent got the confidence in thepolice force.

We have a good policing strategy but we dont have enough policeofficers to deliver it

Many people give up and endure hate and bullying.

We need more resources for the police

    Richard Boudier

Hate crime should not be tolerated police need to engage more with thecommunity to prevent it from happening.

    Luke Evetts

Theres a lot of form filling in policing this stops police from being in thecommunity.

Voluntary sector and police need to work together in the community.

We need more funding for the police

Hate crime starts in schools we need to make every effort to integrateeveryone at school.

Fifth question from Ruth Working is important for my self esteem, pride, social life, but I cant work more than a few hours. Will you ensure that I can carry on?

    Richard Boudier

Everyone has the right to work.Laws need to be strengthened to ensure you can carry on

    Luke Evetts

The benefits system needs to be much simpler to make it easier tounderstand.Employers should be encouraged to employ people for shorter hours.

    Mark Williams

We need to instil an attitude in employers that there needs to be flexibility.

Balance between benefits and work is very important.

Systems like jobcentre+ need to be responsible to individuals

You have a right to contribute to your society and your country.

    Penri James

Theres nothing more rewarding than completing a task and getting yourpay check.

We are all different and can work for different hours this needs to be partof the work place, employers need to understand this.

This needs to be learnt by government and employers.

Sixth question from FredWill you make sure we can get jobs by ensuringpublic sector and big companies have to employ

    us?

    Luke Evetts

I do support Positive discrimination there should be some jobs setaside for people with learning disabilities.

    Richard Boudier

Works for the co-op who have decided they will employ 5% of staff withdisabilities.

This should be for all big companies and the public sector

    Penri James

    Agreed with positive discrimination

Employers need to be able to make adjustments to ensure a just and

    fair society.

    Mark Williams

    Agreed with positive discrimination

Ceredigion relies on public sector for employment.

Seventh question from ArleneI have some small jobs but I dont get paid, what will you do to get me paid?

    Mark Williams

You have a right to be paid

Minimum wage law applies to everyone

    Penri James

    Agreed

Everyones work needs to be rewarded.

It is totally unacceptable I am horrified to hear this.

    Richard Boudier

Labour government introduced the minimum wage it is illegal not to getit.

In this day and age the 21stcentury it shouldnt be happening full stop.

    Luke Evetts

    Its shocking to hear this.

Eighth question from Matt Why am I treated differently, like many peopleI live at home I dont have any support to havea social life what are you going to do about

    this?

    Luke Evetts

We need to make sure that voluntary groups in the community arefunded to give you support.

    Richard Boudier

There are schemes out there; we need to make sure everyone knowsabout them.

    Penri James

Parliament cant make laws for everything.

It is important that the voluntary sector is not forgotten in times offunding crisis.

    Mark Williams

People are stuck in their homes because we live in a rural area andthere isnt any transport.

One of the reasons funding isnt available is because money is going tothe Olympics in London and Wales isnt getting its fair share.
