CERN/CEA Collaboration agreement No. KE2275/TE
WP5 – HTS insert
Kick-off meeting 07/07/2014
WP5 Activities• WP5 is the continuation of the EuCARD program High Field
Magnet, WP7.4. • The goal is the construction of an HTS dipole insert for FRESCA2
dipole background magnet aiming at a field increase of about 6 T.• Three steps are foreseen:
• the realization and the test of a single layer prototype • the realization of the insert• the test of the insert alone and inside Fresca 2 dipole magnet

HTS Insert – Critical points
Critical points needing detailed studies or developments :• Conductor critical current and stability margin dependence on
magnetic field orientation • External pads high precision machining • External pads electron-beam welding• Layer transition Hard way bending in case of layer jump, high
résistance in case of bridge jonctions

HTS Insert - Winding
• 2 conductors will be wound in parallel• 6 tapes wound together• Conductor transposition pole to pole
• in the heads• Layer transition, starting point of coil
winding is under studying:• Layer jump• Bridge jonction
• Dummy stainless steel tapes will be used for winding machine design and winding process validation

Tests of the insert
• First the insert will be tested alone with a limited current in order to check its superconducting properties
• Then the insert will be tested in the FRESCA 2 dipole magnet.• The study of the coupling of the two magnets has to be completed• The mechanical interface with FRESCA2 and the detailed test
procedure must be defined
