ABOUT GERONTOLOGY Gerontology is a human service profession with an interdisciplinary focus. The profession has developed in response to one of our most significant population trends: growing numbers of people in the oldest age cohorts. These emerging generations of eld- erly are healthier, better educated and more economically secure than past generations. Even so, many older persons suffer a diminished standard of living. As this segment of the population increases, the demand for services – housing, health care, counseling, leisure activities, etc. – continues to increase as well. Thus, programs in gerontology prepare students for careers that will enable them to assist older people in significantly improving the quality of their lives. THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN GERONTOLOGY AT HOFSTRA The 21-semester-hour certificate program is designed to meet the needs of students from varied academic and employment backgrounds who are interested in the field of aging. Prospective students may come from the field of counseling, allied health professions, sociology, business, marketing, home and interior design, creative arts therapy, etc. The post-baccalaureate certificate program may be taken by students enrolled in master’s programs who wish to have a specialty in gerontology, or students may use the certificate courses to complete the master of science in gerontology. No more than 12 s.h. may be taken on a non-matriculated basis. The required courses in the certificate program come from the basic core for the M.S. in Gerontology program. An internship is required.
