DO YOU HAVE RAINMAKING SKILLS?Create a downpour of work by building on your relationships.

DO YOU HAVE REAL RELATIONSHIPS?Create a downpour of work by expanding your contact network.

Rainmakers have various talents and abilities such as writing, speaking, relationship building and cold calling. No matter what their strengths, the key to rainmaking is developing their network. Execution of the following ideas will require your firm to pull out an umbrella to protect from the downpour of new work:

• Start by reconnecting with people you already know: Focus on those contacts that are good at what they do. Choose those who understand how to network. Prioritize those who market to the same industry to which you do.

• Get involved in client-oriented associations and conferences: This avenue allows you to meet the greatest number of potential clients in one location.

• Write an article for targeted trade publications: Articles in publications provide readers with an assurance that you have substantial experience in an area of expertise.

• Make sure to follow-up with valuable contacts: Within one week of a meeting, your contacts’ memories of you remain intact. Promptly send a hand-written note, email or make a phone call to ensure you make good impression.

• Recognize a lead for someone else when you hear it: Be able to provide your contact with leads and introductions to others in your network who may be able to help them. To do this you must know about their business to recognize a lead when you hear one. Ask them to give a presentation to you about their business.

• Consider speaking, writing and exhibiting at a tradeshow: You will receive great recognition if you attend a tradeshow/conference as a speaker. This generally allows an easier time meeting and conversing with conference participants. This approach establishes you and your firm as an expert.

Umbrella Day, February 10th: Umbrellas were only for the ladies at first. The 18th century was half elapsed before the umbrella had even begun to be used in England by both sexes, as we now see it used. In 1752, Lieutenant-Colonel (afterwards General) Wolfe, writing from Paris says: “The people here use umbrellas in hot weather to defend them from the sun and something of the same kind to save them from the snow and rain. I wonder a practice so useless is not introduced in England.” Just about that time, a gentlemen did exercise the moral courage to use an umbrella in the streets of London. He was the noted Jonas Hanway, newly returned from Persia, and in delicate health, by which, of course, his using such a convenience was justified by both himself and the considerate part of the public. Umbrella Day is celebrated February 10th every year in honor of one of the worlds’s most valuable inventions.

Dear SMPS Members,

I hope this message finds you happy and healthy as the new year begins. I am encouraged with the amount of participation from our membership and hope to continue to elevate the educational resources and networking opportunities throughout 2015.

This year’s Holiday Gala was extremely successful thanks to James Kilpatrick and his Special Events Committee. The event raised nearly $1,200.00 for the Brockstrong Foundation which will provide private music lessons for local youth.

Congratulations to all of the winners of the Marketing Communications Awards. The competition was impressive and number of responses we received was amazing! Special congratulations to Fran Pruyn, Marketer of the Year, and to Emily Hymas, Rising Star.

I would also like to congratulate Heidi Nielsen, for passing the CPSM exam and thank her for her continued hard work with the Communications Committee. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Heidi over the last year and can say that this achievement was certainly earned. Great job!

As we start 2015, I’m reminded that life around us is constantly changing. The new year is an opportunity to look back at our previous disappointments, celebrate our accomplishments and a reminder that we keep moving forward. On to the next proposal!

All my best,

Shana Yonemura President, SMPS Utah Chapter

Dustin Smith, Jacobsen Construction Best Marketing Campaign
