GEOGRAPHY• Japan is an archipelago, or

string of islands, on the east of Asia.

• Almost four-fifths of Japan is covered with mountains.

• The highest peak is Mount Fuji, a volcano considered sacred by many Japanese.

• Japan also has about 200 volcanoes, 60 of which are active.

NATURE• They think that natural

features like mountains, waterfalls, and forests have their own spirits.

• About 136 species in Japan are listed as endangered.

• Some of the plants in Japan are:

HISTORY• People first came to Japan about 30,000 years

ago.• The first society started about 12,000 years ago.• Europeans first arrived in Japan in 1543.• During World War I Japan fought on the side of

U.S. • During World War II the U.S killed about 115,000

japanese people with the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagashaki.

• Japan surrendered a few days later.

JAPAN ISLANDS• Hokkaido is the second largest

island in Japan. The largest city in Hokkaido is its capital, Sapporo.

• Honshu is the largest and popular island of Japan. In this island is the capital of Japan; Tokio.

• Shikoku is the smaller and the least populetion of Japan.

• Kyushu is the third largest island in Japan. It is in the East of Asia.

MONUMENTS OF JAPAN• The Kaminarimon, is the

pride of Asakusa, the gate to the gate to Senso-ji a temple.

• The Hanazono Jinja is in the heart of Tokio, is a small and unobtrusive structure.

• The Osaka Castle is located in the Osaka prefecture. In 1853 the reginal lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi built the castle.
