Education without God

‘Knowledge’ - what Bible talks about comprises of wisdom, understanding and discretion. But the knowledge that comesfrom studying science does not give the above character traits.Knowledge emerges from the science is changing as time goes. When a new discovery comes, old theories become obsolete. Therefore it is foolishness if we evaluate the word of God withchanging facts of science where as the word of God remainsunchanged.

There is nothing wrong, of course, in seeking to gain a goodsecular education, but we must differentiate between secularknowledge and spiritual knowledge. A person can be highlyeducated, but be quite ignorant when it comes to the reallyimportant issues of life. Lloyed George, a former British PrimeMinister, once said, “Education with out God makes cleverdevils! Today we have in this country some very clever devilsemerging from our colleges and universities. They are becomingsuicide bombs.

Without spiritual knowledge we would never know how tobecome experts in the art of living. One university student toreup his degree certificate and sent it back to the university wherehe had been educated saying “you taught me how to make aliving but never taught me how to live. Only the Bible can teachus how to live effectively.

Spiritual people used to say “The Bible is not true because itsatisfies reason, but it satisfies reason because it’s true.” Acceptit by faith and you; too, will find that it will become a new bookfor you.

Spiritual food from Habakkuk

Revival is just the life of the Lord Jesus poured into our brokenhearts. Jesus is always victorious. Whatever may be our

experience of failure or barrenness, He is never defeated. His poweris boundless. We, for our part, have only to get in a right relationshipwith Him to see His power being demonstrated in our hearts andlives and service, and His victorious life will fill us and overflowthrough us to others. That is revival in essence, Yet how few of usknow revival. Our wills are not broken, the life is too much “I” andnot “Christ”. When Habakkuk saw conditions as they were, andrealised the people had failed, he prayed for a real revival of theworks of the Lord.

O! Lord, revive Your work (3:2)

Christianity is the work of the Lord. He begins it, He carries it on,and He completes it in the day of Christ. It is work of His ownhands which He never forsakes, the work which is to reflect theGlory of all His divine perfections. But this work often needsreviving. Our graces become weak, our evidences decline, ourspirituality decays, and we grow cold, careless and worldly minded. Then we have no sweet visits, no tokens for good, no heart-affectingfellowship, no longings for glory. Our affections fix on some earthlyobject, our conscience becomes numb or accuses us, ourunderstanding is darkened, and we sink into an unhealthy state. Oursouls cleave to the dust, and all we can do is cry, ‘Quicken meaccording to Your word’. When the Lord comes to revive His work,He often sends some painful cross, brings us down into the dust bysome affliction, makes us see our sin and smart for our folly. Heconvinces us, humbles us, empties us, and makes us feel thoroughlyashamed of our conduct. He then is able to lead us to confession. He produces contrition, speaks pardon and smiles upon us again.O! Lord, revive Your work in me. Amen.

The revival of theworks of the Lord

Dr. Paulson Pulikottil

“Take stock of your talents, skills and experience. What are yougood at. That is what you should focus on and that is the directionthat you should take.” This is a standard advice given to youngpeople who seek direction in their life and career. The best careeris something that is in line with what you are good at. No one canquestion the wisdom in this and that is true when every person ison his own with no help coming from anywhere else. However, the stories of God’s dealing with individuals in the Bible tells usthat when God takes control of a person he takes them beyondtheir abilities. Moses is a typical example. God called him to do ajob where a lot of talking was involved- reasoning, negotiating, teaching, and the list goes on! But when God called him he wasnot eloquent and was a man who stammerred. God takes that manwith speech impediment and takes him beyond that limitation. What about the (unschooled) fishermen who followed Jesus? Forexample, Peter turned out to be a great preacher and gave somecrucial sermons. Their wisdom surprised the scholars at theSanhedrin (Acts 4:13). God does not look at what we are but whatwe could be. Being our creator he knows best what he can turnout to be. He will equip us for that and takes us beyond our ownlimitations. Trust God to take us beyond our present capabilitiesto his possibilities.

Place of Safety

“A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple passon and are punished (Prov. 27:12).

We live in a world where we hear about innumerable tragic stories ofdangerous traps all around us. How can a man ever hope to escape thetraps that devil continuously devise against him? There is such a thing asforeseeing evil and avoiding it. But it is in no way human foresight orwisdom. In Proverbs 3:5, we read: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Ofcourse, there is a place of safety that is hid from the eye of theordinary passerby. Job points out like this: “There is a path which no fowlknoweth, and which the vulture’s eye hath not seen; the lion’s whelps havenot trodden it nor the fierce lion passed by it” (Job. 28: 7-8).

This place of protection and safety from the evil trap is plainly revealedin Psalms 91:1 “He that dewelleth in the secret place of the most Highshall abide under the shadow of the Almighty… surely He shall deliverthee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. Heshall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shall thee trust…”

This ofcourse is the promised deliverance from the devil’s traps. Theexpression ‘snare of the fowler’ is a clear allusion to the devil who is busysetting snares for God’s people. It is always better to foresee the dangerand avoid it than fall into the trap and be rescued. The warning to ‘watchand pray’ is applicable to Christians of all ages especially for the presenttime! There is no place of safety anywhere, no strategy for securitywhatsoever other than “the secret place of the most high.” Let us thank andpraise the Lord for we are under the shadow of the Almighty Lord.

Teacher’s Day

September 5 is Teachers Day in India. What better way to wish your teachersthan to tell them how they have made a difference in your life. This is the

birthday of late Dr. Radha Krishnan, twice Vice President and President of Indiain 1960’s. He was a well known Philosopher, Vice Chancellor of variousUniversities and a professor in Indian Universities and abroad. Moreover hewas a good teacher. India is known for good teacher – student relationship.

God sends angels in everyone’s life who help one tide over one’s problemsand succeed in life. Adolescence is tumultuous part of a person’s life duringwhich he / she can either accelerate or stagnate in life’s journey and a lot of itdepends on the kind of guidance he/she receives. He is like lost stream in thedesert and found boundless wisdom of good teachers. School and Collegestudents have a tendency to listen and trust their teachers. They make profoundinfluence upon their students. This can be proved by an illustration.

Paul Sudhakar, a close relative of late Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon, the formerDefence Minister, once approached Dr. Radha Krishnan for personal counselling. He asked the great teacher to show him a ‘Guru’ whom he can rely upon all thedays of his life. Dr. Radha Krishnan without any hesitation told him to acceptJesus Christ as eternal teacher. That is how Sudhakar became Paul Sudhakar. Inmy college days I was very very close to Paul Sudhakar’s family at Trivandrum. It is he who explained this event to me.

My own experience is another illustration. While I was a student of secondyear BA in Fathima Mata National College in 1963, two staff workers of UESIBros. P.C. Varghese and P. Sathkeerthi Rao counselled me after a prayer groupand led me to Christ.

The possibilities of ICPF is beyond of our imagination. ICPF is called for aprofound teaching ministry by which thousands of students can be modelledafter Jesus Christ.

One Day SeminarWe the student forum as a team are glad to praiseGod our rock who trains our hands for war, ourfingers for battle (Psalm 144:1). At the very outsetof this academic year we as a team planned for half-day retreats at different places. It’s for thestrengthening and widening of our groups as wellas to reach the students who are unable to attend ourregular groups. Thus, the abundant grace of godenabled us to organize four half-day retreats ind i f f e r e n tplaces atAreth, Kim,Vyara, andSilvassa onthe month ofJuly andAugust. Of these Areth, Vyara, and Silvassa had thefirst thrill of ICPF ministry. As a result students wereencouraged and motivated to take up their god givenresponsibilities in their life. Also students in Silvassadecided to start group meeting on every secondSaturday. We are also thankful to Bro. Anish K.S(Student Counsellor) and N.K. James (CGPFPresident) for their able leadership through-out theprogram. Once again we as a team are thankful togod almighty who enabled us in such a wonderfulway to organize the programs. in a befitting manner.
