Next,createaninventoryofcriticalbusinessassetsandprocesses:whatthingsareessentialtokeepingyourbusinessrunning.
AnalyzeImpactsandRisksoftheHazardsonYourBusiness:
Usingthetwolists,developariskanalysisforyourbusinessbyimagininghoweachhazardmightaffecttheitemsinyourcriticalbusinessinventory.
Step3:BusinessImpactAssessmentAbusinessimpactassessmenttakesamoredetailedlookatalloftheinformationyouhavegatheredatthispoint,combinesitalltogetherandthenprioritizeswhichHazardActionPlansshouldbecreatedfirst.Itdoessobyassigninganoverallimpactscore,whichrepresentstheriskexposureforyourbusiness(thehigherthenumber,thehighertheriskexposure).

Step4:RiskReduction-Mitigation&PreparednessAfteridentifyingthegreatestriskstoyourbusiness,itistimetostartthinkingabouthowtoreducethoserisks.Mitigationandpreparednessaretwowaystodothis:
Mitigatingriskisanactionthatyouundertakebeforeahazardsituationtoreducebusinesses’vulnerabilitiesandriskexposure.Bymitigatingtherisks,whenahazardoccurs,itwillhavelessofanimpact.
Preparednessmeansputtingthingsinplacebeforeanemergency,sothatwhenahazardoccursyouarebetterequippedtodealwithit.Thiswillalsolessentheimpact.
Forexample,amitigationmeasuremightbeimplementingrecommendationsfromtheFireSmartProgram(http://www.bcwildfire.ca/Prevention/firesmart.htm)toreduceyourbusinesseswildfirerisk,suchasfuelmanagementaroundthepropertyortreelimbremoval.Apreparednessmeasurewouldbecreatingyouremergencypreparednesskitor“GrabandGo”kitbeforeawildfire,sothatifyouareevacuatedyouhavethesuppliesneededtoreduceyourrisk.Bothareexamplesofwaystoreducetheimpactthatawildfiremighthaveonyourbusiness.
Step5:HazardActionPlansHazardActionPlansaresinglepage“mini-plans”whicharehazardspecificandaredesignedtobeasinglegotosourceofinformationusedbefore,duringandafterahazardsituation.
Beforehandtheyrepresentareferencepointforpreparednessandmitigationstrategiesspecifictoeachhazard.
DuringanemergencysituationtheycanbeeasilyreferencedtoreviewthelikelybusinessfunctionsorassetstobeimpactedandtheirassociatedRecoveryTimeObjectives,potentialimpacts,staffrequirements,resourcerequirements,whathasbeendonetoprepareandmitigatetheriskandwhatstrategiescanbeimplementedduringthehazardsituation.
Afterahazardsituationtheyrepresentareferencepointforrecoveryandresponseactivitiestohelpgetyourbusinessbackonlineassoonaspossible.
Step6:Test&UpdateAswithanydocument,itisonlyasvaluableasitsrelevance.Inotherwords,ifyoudonotregularlychecktoseeifitneedsupdatingormakesureallofthestaffareawareofit,thenitwillbecomejustanotherfoldercollectingdustonashelf.Furthertothispoint,withouttestingitinmockscenariosordiscussingitwithotherstaffmembers,thereisaveryrealchancethatsomekeyinformationmightbemissingorthatacriticalstepwasleftout.Rememberthattheideahereistomakeanextremelypracticalandrealisticdocumentthatwillprovidethebiggestimpactinahazardsituation.

Inordertoapplyforassistance,businessesmustmeetallDFAprogrameligibilitycriteria.Onlyuninsurableitemsessentialtotheoperationofthebusinesswillbeconsideredforfinancialassistance.
