cfbia fkpq^ii^_ib UNDERWATER ELECTRICAL DRY-MATE CONNECTORS

INTRODUCTIONIn recent years the search for oil has required operations in progres-sively deeper waters by mobile offshore drilling units. Drilling atthese depths places strong demands on equipment, particularly thecable and connectors that link subsea operations to the surface.pb^`lk addressed the equipment problem by developing an under-water connector system with high reliability, improved conditionassessment capability and better maintainability. pb^`lk's next-generation multiplex (MUX) cable termination system is the tangibleresult of the company's ability to apply real-world operator field expe-rience to its product design and produce a step-change improvementin connector performance.

pb^`lk's range of MUX systems consist of 1 Atmosphere andPositively Pressurized (RUFF-NEK) connector solutions as well asthe new underwater cable termination system which consists of theArmor Termination Assembly (ATA), Breakaway unit and RUFF-NEKconnector.

The RUFF-NEK connector is an electro/optical/mechanical termina-tion that contains an integral system that does not rely on separateexternal compensator systems to apply a constant overpressure(internal pressure greater than external pressure) to the end of thecable and termination volume. The overpressure is maintained at upto 60 psi over ambient pressure and helps to prevent water intrusioninto the termination chamber that could be caused by flooding of theconductor strands (in the event of cable jacket and conductor insu-lation breach) or by seal failure. In the cable termination system theATA is affixed to a clevis mount (padeye) at a convenient location onthe BOP (Blow Out Prevention) stack while the RUFF-NEK connec-tor mates to either a transformer module, crossover or directly to thesubsea electronics module (pod). The orientation aspect that can bea problem with a conventional connector is eliminated due to thebreakaway unit that interfaces the ATA with the BOP, enabling a con-nection in 90-degree intervals.

There are many benefits to the cable termination system including alighter, more manageable connector, separate armor terminationfunction from electrical connector function and a controlled break-away function.

Every static seal is redundant (e.g., dual versus single o-ring) formaximum reliability, and everywhere possible, the seals are testableto enable verification of seal integrity off the critical path. The RUFF-NEK connector provides visual verification of positive pressure overambient. It also includes the ability to electrically check for fluid con-tamination without opening the connector.

AVAILABILITYConnector materials include 316 Stainless Steel, 17-4PH StainlessSteel, Titanium, Neoprene, Nitrile (formerly known as Buna N) andHypalon, however other materials are available for different environ-ments. The materials used in the manufacture enable the connectorto have a design life of 20 years.

The connectors can be rated up to 20,000 psi has many standardconfigurations (e.g., 6#10 electrical contacts and 8 fiber optic chan-nels or 12#16 electrical channels) and is available with single ordual-pressure compensated chambers.

Due to the absence of a requirement for resins and molding, the con-nector has a fully field-installable capability. In the event of a com-plete failure or loss of compensation medium, secondary seals onthe electrical contacts allow operation even with a flooded connector.

APPLICATIONSpb^`lk's Field Installable products are suitable for offshore harshenvironment applications including drilling rigs and drilling vessels.

TESTINGThe ability for the connector to operate in a flooded condition wasproven in qualification. Testing included operational testing at pres-sure both with no compensating fluid and in a flooded condition.

The strength of the ATA was tested in a simulated operating environ-ment. The test showed that the initial design could transmit in excessof 16,000 pounds and enabled an initial operating rating of 8,000pounds, although different ratings are available on request.

Testing was also conducted to ensure that the cable separated fromthe connector without damage to the pod. The results showed thatno damage occurred to interfacing components when the cablepulled out at approximately 700 pounds.

Pressure testing of the the RUFF-NEK connector was also conduct-ed to a simulated operating environment of 7,500 psi, equivalent to10,000 feet operating depth and also 8,400 psi, simulating 15,000feet depth.

ATA RUFF-NEK TERMINATION SYSTEMThe ATA was designed to be an integral part of the MUX umbilicalcable termination system shown in Figure 1. The Armor TerminationAssembly is secured to the riser or control system framework usinga Breakaway Unit that is designed to separate at a defined load. Thesmaller, more manageable RUFF-NEK is then routed and connect-ed. In the case of accidental BOP droppage, the Breakaway Unitshears and the unarmored section of cable pulls out of the RUFF-NEK.

The jppn orccJkbh connector is a MUX cable termination thatmaintains a constant positive pressure inside its oil-filled connec-tor cavity. Positive pressure, maintained at 25 psi using a spring-loaded piston, deters water ingress from conductor interstices andother sources. Inside the connector, advanced conductor bootingtechnology assures functionality even when the jppn orccJkbhis water-flooded. The jppn orccJkbh is field installable andtestable. Dual barrier seals are used throughout the connector. Itis currently available in an electro-optical hybrid configuration, andwill soon be available in electrical-only configurations.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATIONThe jppnJc`o uses flange-mounting to secure it to a bulkhead or vessel. Flange diameter varies depending on theapplication. Dual o-rings; one radial and one facial, provide sealing of the base. These o-rings are testable via the testport seen in Figure 2. A glass reinforced epoxy (GRE) 'insert' provides electrical isolation. The mating side of thereceptacle, shown on the right, also uses radial and facial o-rings for sealing to the cable connector plug (CCP).

jppn orccJkkbh ``mPOSITIVELY PRESSURIZED, DEEPWATER MUX CABLE CONNECTOR

DESCRIPTION

KEY FEATURES

The jppn orccJkbh ``m connector is a MUX cable termination that maintains a constant positive pressure (max 60 psi / 4.0 Bar)inside its oil-filled volume via a spring-loaded piston. This prevents water ingress to internal conductor elements that could createelectrical short circuits. Additional internal water barriers are formed through advanced elastomeric boot sealing technology to sealeach individual cable element. This ensures full functionality even in a major event where the internal oil volume becomes complete-ly water flooded. The jppn orccJkbh ``m is field installable and testable. It is currently available in both all-electric and hybrid(electro-optic) configurations as listed in the tables below. The overall connector designs are modular, where only the cable termina-tion element needs to be specifically designed to suit the characteristics of different cables.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATIONThe orccJkbh was designed to be an integral part of the MUX umbilical cable termination system shown below (exampleA251-101):

The Armor Termination Assembly is secured to the host structure using a BreakawayUnit that is designed to separate at a pre-determined load of approximately 8,000 lbf(35,600 N). The cable armor is terminated to the q̂^, which removes the cable strainfrom the connector. The cable inner jacket is then routed and the smaller, more man-ageable orccJkbh is connected to the host control system. In the case of uninten-tional BOP disconnect, the Breakaway Unit shears and the unarmored section ofcable pulls out of the orccJkbh. Generally, all metallic components can be re-usedin the event of cable re-termination.

Even though these procedures appear simple, only qualified techni-cians should perform the installation and maintenance.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURESTorque values referenced assume installation into dry metal threads.Bulkhead connector receptacle (BCR) o-ring should be lubricated withan appropriate silicone grease before installing. This lubricant shouldbe applied to form an adequate film. Excessive lubrication is detrimen-tal to the operation of the connector. Care must be taken to ensure nogrease or dirt is present on the face of the fiber optic contact. Cleaningof the contact is recommended using only suitable products. CCP o-ring should be greased as above with the same care being taken.

CARE AND MAINTENANCEOnce mated the connector requires no maintenance. When stored allfiber contacts should be protected with suitable dust caps.

CABLE AND CONTINUITY PRESERVATIONAvoid sharp bends in both the hose assembly and the tail ends of theBCR so that breakage of the fiber does not occur.
