CHAIRMAN’S REVIEW

It is with much pleasure that I report on the activities of the Christchurch Football Club in this its 150th year of existence. This year has been a significant year with the wonderful Jubilee celebrations, held over Easter weekend, a special highlight. The Jubilee subcommittee compiled a very busy and varied programme and attendees revelled in the occasion. All the events were well attended with the Jubilee dinner a special night for the over 360 attendees. The subcommittee under the joint chairmanship of Tony Murdoch and Michael Nutt deserve special thanks for their hard work in superbly organising the various events. Also, my sincere thanks go to David Wilson and Bryan South for their experienced management of the Jubilee finances. Special mention needs to be made of the fabulous book compiled by Tony Murdoch. It is a wonderful record of the Club and a great read. Thanks to Tony for his dedicated work in compiling the club history. A separate report on the jubilee is included elsewhere in this Annual Report.

The other major highlight this year was the club game Richie McCaw played for Div.1 as part of his comeback. What a day , a couple of thousand spectators, seven television crews, photographers, print media, radio, you name it they were here. To cap it off Div. 1 played very well and recaptured the DCL Shield with a meritorious win over University. The celebrations flowed over to the clubrooms with a great turnout of club members and supporters. The day was complete with the presentation of Best ever team caps to Richie, the families of the late Jack Manchester and Ross Smith and 50 year team caps to Nicky Hobbs on behalf of Jock and also to Matt Todd. This was a special day and a memorable one for everyone. Richie was fantastic and very patient in all his dealings on the day and we are

very fortunate and honoured to call him a Club member.

The Club was thrilled to add the name of Matt Todd to its distinguished list of CFC players who have represented the All Blacks. Matt`s selection was well deserved and an overdue recognition for his outstanding play over the last few years. Richie was named as Captain of the All Blacks and his massive game in the Ellis Park victory over South Africa, a testimony to his commitment, strength and courage. Congratulations are also extended to Steph Ohaere-Fox for her selection in the Black Ferns and to Alexis Tapsell who was selected in the NZ Seven`s team .

Results wise it was not a spectacular year for the Club, rather it was a steady year. The Div. 3 team returned to their winning ways. They won all three of the trophies available in their grade. The Colts enjoyed a very good season sharing the competition title with Marist-Albion after a very hard fought, drawn final. Div. 1 took out the bowl competition without really threatening to break into the top eight of the competition. Div. 2 were the surprise package and worked their way through to the final where they were beaten by a good Lyttelton team. They did provide one of the rugby highlights of the season with their last gasp victory against Old Boys with a spectacular try to Stefan Bendall in the very last moments of the match. Colts Premier could not quite replicate their 2012 performance and were beaten semi finalists. The Carardlys battled away on the field. However off the field they were a force and were regular and loyal supporters of the club. The major highlight for them would undoubtedly be their 20 year team reunion which they happily celebrated at the end of August.


It was great to have a women’s team back playing for the Club after a short absence. Coached by the legendary Melissa Ruscoe and ably managed by Ang Gordon, the team performed very well to qualify for the semi finals. The members enjoyed having the women’s team part of the Club setup again and thanks are also given to Mike O`Donovan for his assistance with this team.

Once again Tony Hussey and his committee did an excellent job of organising forty two Junior Teams (two more than last year). They do a wonderful job in skilfully pulling all the necessary operational and administrative support together in running this highly successful part of the club. Tony’s separate report provides some more detail around the performances and successes of the season. Thanks to Tony, his committee and all the coaches and managers for their contribution towards the junior section. Indeed to all coaches, managers, physios and support staff, a sincere thanks for your wonderful dedication and contribution to the teams and the club.Financially, 2013 was not as successful as 2012. The result was a deficit on operations of $58,883 as opposed to a $38,894 surplus last year. There are some mitigating factors around this with the deficit on the Jubilee activities, one off costs associated with repairs and maintenance around the complex (car park , toilets, balcony) undertaken prior to the Jubilee and also the considerable costs around the maintenance of the playing fields. The financial reports and accounts are located elsewhere in this report.The condition of the playing fields particularly number one is of great concern to the Board. The need to undertake a major upgrade of number one is fast looming. This will require substantial funding to be sourced for this

project. The number two field actually came through the season in better shape than number one but still requires a thorough renovation programme to be undertaken over the summer months.

We wish to record our appreciation to Eddie Cropley from Westminster Sports, for his skilful handling of the Club’s grant funding applications. This is a thankless task and one which Eddie is very adapt and successful at.

At the end of January 2013 Lorna O`Donovan resigned as Complex Manager. Lorna had been with the club for two years and had made a great contribution with her expert management of the motels and bar operations despite the considerable upheaval the many earthquakes had caused. Sherry Osborne became our new Complex Manager. Together with her husband Howard, they have shown their professional skills and capabilities and have enhanced the clubs financial operations particularly around the venue hire of the Club, the motels and the bar. Our booking calendar for venue hires has never been so full and the motels have operated at a high level of occupancy for the year under review.

I wish to thank the staff for their dedicated commitment to the Club. Pauline Shutt has given great administrative support to Sherry and Tim Murdoch. Russell Bayliss is one of the great contributors to the club. No task is too much for Russell whose expertise covers so many areas. We could not function as well without Russell’s expert assistance. Mike O`Donovan heads the rugby operation and is a very capable administrator who works long hours to ensure that CFC teams and players have the best resources and environment

available to allow them to perform to their potential week in week out .

At the 2012 Annual General Meeting there was genuine pleasure shown at the election of Gerald Wilson as the Club’s sixty fifth Life Member. Gerald has been a member of the club since 1956 and has proudly served in a variety of coaching and administrative capacities including currently as President.

We are so fortunate to have the Axemen as part of the club. They have given terrific support to the club financially but also spiritually. I am certain that their contribution and presence is unequalled in any rugby club in New Zealand. Under Dale Cooper’s leadership, the Trustees have always shown the best interests of the club to be at the forefront of their decisions. They contributed greatly to the 150th jubilee with their financial support for the new Directory Board, the sail over the pit area and the digitising of the Club’s photo bank. Many thanks for your support and encouragement of the Club.

To Noel Walton and the Board of CFC World, thank you most sincerely for your financial support and backing of the club during this 2012/13 year. We greatly appreciate the role you play within the club and your guidance and opinions are valued.

Despite this year’s financial result, I am very optimistic about the Club’s future. There are some exciting possibilities going to occur over the next few years which can only benefit the club.

The overriding strength of the Christchurch Football Club is its members, especially those volunteers who give up their time to ensure that the Club functions successfully. These

members are leading busy lives away from the Club and they are finding it harder and harder to put in the hours that the Club requires. To alleviate this problem the Board appointed Tim Murdoch to the position of Business Development Manager in September, 2012. Tim has proved to be a very good appointment, his work up to and during the 150th Celebrations was exceptional and the knowledge and experience that he has brought with him has assisted the Board immensely. I am sure that his contribution to the Christchurch Football Club will continue to grow the longer he is with the Club.

Special thanks go to our Board members Toby Giles, Gerald Wilson, Mark Thompson, Bryce Thompson and Viv de Beus for their guidance and management of the Club, along with thanks to all the coaches, managers, the Rugby Committee (especially Chris Hammett and Pete Bowden), our Patron, Ken Allsop, and Charles Knibb

To members and supporters of the Club who have lost family during the year, we offer you our sympathy. In this regard John McKenzie, a respected former player and coach died in January this year.

I am standing down from the Board at the upcoming AGM. I have very much enjoyed my time on the Board and wish the incoming Board all the very best for the future. I also extend my personal thanks to everyone who has helped me over the years especially Gerald Wilson, David Wilson, Eddie Cropley, Charles Knibb, ,Bryce Thompson , Toby Giles, Tony Murdoch, Jerry Rowberry, Mike O’Donovan, Craig Calder, Bob Eastgate & John Mill to name but a few.

150TH JUBILEE

The club celebrated its 150th year of continuous existence over the extended weekend of 27 to 31 March with a full programme of events and a determination to focus on the club and its achievements. An organising committee had been established early in 2012 and this group met regularly to develop the celebratory events and to ensure this significant milestone was marked appropriately.

AIMSThe Jubilee committee had a comparatively short period of time to organise a programme of events and to promote the celebrations. It was aware of the success of the 125th jubilee and consciously opted to keep things as simple as possible and avoid major expense. This translated into several practical decisions which were to:

• Usetheclubroomsashomebaseand where possible to avoid the cost of external venues.• Notpayforaguestspeaker.• Avoid“freebies”–everyone,apartfrom special guests were to pay their own way.• Focusontheclubanditsownunique history.• Developadatabaseofformermembersfor future usage.• Improvetheclubwebsiteasakey communications tool.• Produceahistoryoftheclub’s150years and properly record its role in the origins of rugby in New Zealand.• Createanawarenessoftheclubandits history for current and future members.

The gala event of the celebrations would be the jubilee dinner and this would feature the

naming of the best ever XV and the recipients or their descendants would be awarded special black CFC caps. As is often the case the most vexing issue for the planners was the budget and the need to price events so that good numbers would attend and quality events could be provided. Fortunately the Club, the World Company and the Axeman’s Club all indicated support for the jubilee and this allowed the committee to proceed.

As the months went by it quickly became apparent that there were few if any sponsorship opportunities. This was a vivid contrast to the 125th jubilee which secured significant funding and as a consequence the budget was pruned several times and it became necessary to get the Club to underwrite the event. A deliberate decision was made to subsidize the jubilee dinner and this was done to ensure a full house.

By early March all the planning was in place and the detailed organisation around each event had been completed. As Easter weekend loomed all thoughts turned to the reunion and there was a growing excitement for the celebrations ahead.

PROGRAMME OF EVENTSThe order of events had been planned to allow a gradual build towards the conversaccione and the gala dinner. The club’s past was reflected in the revival of the relationship with the Brothers Club from Brisbane, the match against Linwood and the College game between Christ’s College and St Andrews College both schools that had been the conduit for many players to join the CFC.


Importantly the club’s historic contribution to the game of rugby in New Zealand was to be marked by the staging of a re-enactment game between Club and College and this would be played under the College rules of 1863.

Wednesday 27 March: CFC v BrothersThis game was played under lights and resulted in a win to the Brother’s Club. For both teams it was very much a pre-season work out but both played with vigour and determination. A good crowd watched and the post-match speeches were notable for the enthusiasm to revive this trans-Tasman exchange which had originated almost 50 years ago.

Thursday 28 March: Golf TournamentThanks to Max Bremner and the Speight’s Ale House this event was held at the Christchurch Golf Club. All enjoyed the day and there was a good sized field under the direction of Tony Penny. Following the competition the players retired to Bealey Avenue and for some the night stretched into the early hours.

Friday 29 March: Club v College (re-enactment match) On a glorious late summers afternoon the re-enactment game between the teams of 22 took place. Expertly organised by John Mill and his subcommittee the day featured spectators and players in period dress, a team of Clydesdale horses, an after-match sing along and a part creation of the club rooms to resemble the post-match socialising of 1863. The match was a very good recreationoffootballor“TheChrist’sCollegegame”andJerryRowberryistobecreditedfor his work in making sense of the early rules

and then playing the game according to them.

Friday 29 March: Conversaccione at the ClubroomsThe very warm weather of the day continued into the evening as a large number packed the Westminster Street clubrooms to renew old friendships and enjoy the formalities. The excellent attendance and the temperature stimulated thirsts and this taxed the beer service at times. Robbie Eastgate chaired the formal side of the night with great skill and ensured that the official opening and the announcement of the Best Ever XV of the last 50 years were given due respect. George Scrimshaw provided humour and insight into his family’s club connections and amused all with his humour. Officially the night concluded at midnight but for those staying in the motel units it went on much longer and tested the stamina of some.

Steve Dillon was responsible for organising this successful event and thanks are due to him and Sherry Osborne, the complex manager, for their efforts.

Saturday 30 MarchOnce again the weather gods smiled and Saturday dawned fine and as the day warmed there was a steady stream of attendees registering and then settling down to watch the junior games and the main game. The club rooms proved ideal for the day and were the perfect meeting place for those returning, having only ever known the Bangor Street rooms.

JUNIOR FIXTURESA series of JAB games were played in the morning and these games provided

a pleasing backdrop to the occasion and served to remind all of the importance of the JAB and its contribution to the club’s history.

Christchurch v LinwoodThe feature rugby event of the celebrations was held on Saturday afternoon against Linwood, a long standing and respected rival. In a hard-fought encounter Linwood emerged as deserved winners over a Christchurch team that battled with courage but lacked finish. The game was watched by a large crowd and the after-match speeches were notable for the respect each club showed to the other and the pride each had in playing in a match to commemorate the 150th jubilee.

JUBILEE DINNERSteve Dillon and his committee decided that the Air Force Museum would be a fitting venue for this gala event and there was a high sense of anticipation as the crowd gathered for pre drinks before entering the seated area. There were a few audible gasps as people took in the splendid setting for the dinner and then settled back to enjoy the meal and the formalities.

Peter Smith was MC for the occasion and he kept a tight rein on time while ensuring there was plenty of good humour as the night unfolded. The presentation of caps was notable for the presence of Simon Hart, the son of the legendary winger of the 1930s, George Hart, and of Dianne Norton Taylor granddaughter of Neil McGregor an All Black of the 1920s and a former life member. Ruk Wainohou, Derek Arnold, Tiny Hill and Richard Wilson were also present to receive their caps.

Sadly it was a night that ended all too soon for the 350 who attended but there was universal delight in the occasion and again special thanks are due to Steve Dillon for his outstanding work in pulling this event together.

Sunday 31 MarchThis was the final day of the jubilee celebrations and was planned as a gentle wind-down. John Mill and Trevor Cox were responsible for the programme for the morning and their efforts ensured that it was another successful event.

Remembrance ServiceThe jubilee committee had wanted to stage an event that paid respect to past club members who had died in the service of their country and for members who had passed away. George Scrimshaw and Mike Nutt worked together to provide a service that evoked these sentiments and with the Rev. Mike Hawke as celebrant this event was a timely reminder of the sacrifices of previous generations. For a number this service was a highlight of the weekend.

Christ’s College XV v St Andrew’s College XVThe game between these two feeder colleges was played as a pre- season fixture


and it provided both teams to give their squads valuable early season work-outs. As the game wore on a steady stream of attendees gathered in groups, some in the bar, to continue their reminiscences and to review the day before. After this match both Colleges were presented with copies of the jubilee history and both captain’s spoke acknowledging the long-standing links between their respective schools and CFC.

Golden Oldies v BurnsideFittingly the club’s elder statesmen took to the field for this encounter. As is the tradition no score was officially recorded but all involved seemed happy with the outcome. Patronage of the bar increased markedly once the teams had finished showering and settled in.

Jubilee LunchOver 150 registered for the farewell luncheon which was served from the outside BBQ area in glorious sunshine. Again there was a chance to catch up with old friends and team mates and the setting contributed to a very pleasant occasion. By 3.00pm most had left apart from a dedicated crew who soldiered into the evening.As farewells were made the consensus from all was that it had been an outstanding reunion and for the organisers there was affirmation for their efforts in the smiling faces and warm hand-shakes.

THE OLD CLUBThe club’s history was substantially updated by Tony Murdoch who wrote the jubilee history. Fittingly titled The Old Club this survey covered each decade of the 150 years and profiled each of the club’s 31 All Blacks. It also addressed the much discussed question of

the oldest rugby club in New Zealand and of the origins of rugby. At over 300 pages and packed with photographs it is a handsome compilation and a fitting tribute to the Club’s proud history.

LEGACIESBy and large the jubilee committee achieved the aims it had set down when planning first began. The events of the jubilee weekend were well attended and the atmosphere was one of friendship and conviviality. Thanks to Jerry Rowberry the club now has an extensive listing of former members and thanks to Peter Bowden the website has been significantly improved. The jubilee publication has been well received and may well give future club members a reason to feel pride in the CFC’s unique contribution to rugby in New Zealand.Surprisingly the most unheralded legacy may

well be the decision of the Division One team to revive Give Em the Axe as a celebratory anthem. This team battled through much of the season but never lost its spirit. For older club members there was a shared delight in hearing this familiar chant from a post-match huddle and as the season drew to a close there was a chance to reflect that all the effort had been worthwhile and a new generation would continue to honour the traditions of the Old Club.

IIn my first year as Club Captain, this has been a fantastic year to be involved with one of the oldest Rugby clubs in New Zealand and the world.

The highlight of course was that this was the 150th year of the Club’s existence. The 2013 season has been another successful season for the Christchurch Football club both on and off the field.

The first highlight for me this year was the 150th Jubilee and how well this was organised. The jubilee committee spent many hours behind the scene to put in place what was a wonderful event in celebration of the Club. The reuniting of old team mates, old memories and even the odd court session was enjoyed by all participants.

More highlights for the year was seeing the Colts making the final and despite having to play extra time to get a result, they had to share the trophy with Marist Albion with the final result a draw. This team was well coached by Alan Harding and Jimmy Sinclair who also took out the award at this year’s prizing giving for Outstanding Coaches for the Year.

Another team who did well this year was Division 3 and for the fifth consecutive year they made the Championship finals. They deservedly won the final and capped off a memorable season. This group are self-sufficient with Toby Giles astutely running the ship and with about a million sponsors, and took out the team of the year award at the prize giving ceremony.The Division 1 team this year had a mixed season. Although the results did not always go the way that the team would have wanted, they showed that they were proud to wear the red and black and demonstrated great heart and

spirit. Thanks to Matt Mustchin and Daniel O’Brien, and managers Graham Mitchell, Muir Don and Trevor Best for doing a great job organising the teams requirements behind the scenes so the players and coaches could just concentrate on playing rugby.

Division 2 had a reasonable season in the end. There were some changes in the management and coaching team from last year. Backs coach Terence Hunkin and I came back into the coach’s role. We also had a new manager in Jarrett McGregor. The team was very well led by Kyle Brewer and the commitment from the guys on the field saw them achieve the goal which was to make the Championship finals. To lose to Lyttelton in the final was no disgrace. The team also picked up the Challenge Shield for the season. Congratulations to you all, both Terence and I have enjoyed coaching you and look forward to doing it again next year.

Colts Premier coached by Ross Tarawhiti and Bruce Morten had a reasonably solid year and their commitment on the track was second to none. They showed true professionalism and good spirit throughout the season both on and off the paddock. While they could not repeat last season’s success in winning the grade, they had some very strong performances and did reach the semi-final stage of the season which in itself is a very good achievement. Ross and outstanding Manager Dave Stuthridge have advised the Club that they will be stepping down from their management positions. Both have been great servants of the Club and made such a wonderful contribution to an important group of players. We sincerely thank them for their service and commitment.

The Club were delighted that Melissa Ruscoe put her hand up to do the coaching job for this team and with Andrea Gordon (who also took out Manager of the Year at this years awards) to manage the team , this provided the team with such strong and capable management . While the team had their ups and downs along the way they also managed to get their hands on the Challenge Shield for a few weeks. They also made the semi-finals which was a fantastic achievement for the first year back with a new team. Congratulations to the players and team management and we look forward with much interest to seeing what you can achieve next year.

The Canardlys had a reasonable year and started to gel quite nicely towards to latter half of the season. Their commitment off the field was great this year back at the club and they even celebrated their 20 years anniversary as a team at the conclusion of the season.

Congratulations must be extended to Matt Todd for his long overdue All Black selection, to Richie McCaw for his continuation as an All Black Captain and legend and to Steph Te Ohaere-Fox for her selection in the Black Ferns. Alexis Tapsell was an NZ sevens rep and Reuben Buzzard in the NZ Deaf team also need to recognised.

A very special mention to Mike O’Donovan for his relentless hard work and effort he has put in again this year. Recruiting players, getting guys games, filling in coaching and managing teams and making sure that all teams had enough numbers to field a team. These were just some of the tasks Mike undertakes and we can’t forget these hugs!!!

Our gratitude must be showed to all the volunteers, coaches, managers, the folks that put the flags out every week, and the children that sell the raffles very Saturday. The club cannot operate without this volunteer input and commitment that helps ensure that the club remains strong and successful and is the Club to join for the next 150 years. The Christchurch Football Club appointed Co-Coaches Matt Mustchin (Forwards), Daniel O’Brien (Backs), Matt Lewis (Manager), Trevor Best (Manager), Muir Don (Manager), Duncan Trevella (Trainer) and Megan Williams for the 2013 Season. However, Matt Lewis made himself unavailable early in the pre-season, and Graham Mitchell stepped up from Div 2.

Pre-season matches were aimed at identifying the playing squad. In the club’s 150th year the team played a fixture against a travelling team from the Brothers Club (Brisbane) and officially celebrated its Jubilee with a match against Linwood at Christchurch Park.

The squad assembled in late 2012 for pre-season training. While the squad contained five players with varying ITM Cup experience, including a Crusaders Wider training Squad member, the overall nature of the group was young and skillful but relatively inexperienced at this level. The squad used nine players eligible to play Premier Colts this year, six were initially named in the Squad at the end of pre-season training. Despite this, expectations of the playing group, coaches and management team were high based on the skill, fitness, attitude and potential of the squad. This season was an excellent learning experience for the group of players with fourteen players receiving Ties (1st game) and seven playing their Blazer game (20th).

The focus of the initial phases of the season was to establish a strong team culture and ethos. Numerous meetings were held between the coaching and management staff and a ‘protocols’ evening was held with players, coaches and managers and was officially guided by a qualified sports psychologist. As a result the group came up withtheterm“GC”tosymbolizewhatitmeantto be a part of the 2013 Division One Squad in the club’s 150th season.

This culture remained strong throughout the season and was reinforced by team bonding sessions and an early season training routine that encompassed hill/road runs, beach work and various training techniques led by team trainer Duncan Trevella. The coaching philosophy was based on utilizing the skills and fitness of players to move teams around the field and take advantage of mismatches when they were presented as a result of such ball movement.

Focus on pre-season fitness training was guided by Duncan Trevella. In reviewing the success of this approach, it is apparent that while the squad was one of the fittest in the competition, greater work on physical contact and skill work is required to ensure a well-rounded team takes the field in round one of 2014.

The team also focused on defense, which was ranked fourth overall in 2013. The greatest issue was in attack (11th overall), especially in the earlier part of the season. While the team was able to hold the ball for

extended periods of time, they were unable to ‘bend’ opposition defenses or capitalize on breaks made. Despite scoring fifty one tries overall (compared to eventual Champions New Brighton who managed fifty) the team was unable to finish and lacked an outside back with express pace and a finishing touch.

Throughout the season the game plan was adjusted to help overhaul the limited success of early games. This resulted in strong wins over Linwood and HSOB (previously undefeated and eventual runners up) and the retention of the DCL Shield for 2013. The season ended with convincing victories over Belfast and University to claim the Metro Bowl.

The management team of Graham Mitchell, Trevor Best and Muir Don began the season by dividing responsibilities. Graham was responsible primarily for Game day and squad demands during the week. Muir and Trevor were accountable for team funds, sponsorship and support for Graham Mitchell in the day to day management of the squad.

The triumvirate approach to the management group worked very well as roles were well established and clearly defined. The group supported the players and coaching staff extremely well and must be congratulated for their efforts in 2013.

Three players managed to play all eighteen games this year, Matt Groom, Andy Rossiter, and William Mills, while three others only missing one game Brook Retallick, George Talboys, and Andy Williams. Four players had limited or no game time, Matt Thatcher, Brad Tucker, Matt Etheredge, and Nick Mannering all thanks to serious injuries sustained pre- or early in the season. Their help throughout the season to the team was invaluable and a big

thanks from the management team for your efforts. We must also make mention of Steve Alfeld who played out of his usual position most of the season after the departure of Jason Merrett to Japan.

Our Japanese import Yoshi, played fourteen games while he was with us and thoroughly enjoyed his stint with the team, we must thank Kashi for his time with Yoshi translating the coaches messages at most training runs, getting the message across most times. Thanks also to the players from other squads that came up and filled in when required, travelling across town on some occasions to sit on our bench, and take the field when needed, Scott Harpum, Stefan Bendall, Kyle Brewer, Jordan Stone, to name a few.

With the return of Steph Fox to New Zealand and the offer of Fraggle to coach a women’s team - the idea was born to put the word out and see if there would be enough players available to play for Christchurch. The club was really supportive of having a women’s team back in and once mouths got talking we had the reigning World Cup Black Ferns captain as coach, we had players knocking at our door.

With such a positive response the preseason months consisted of Fraggle organizing fun team bonding activities, Steph and Kim promoting our team and Ang getting the official stuff done on paper so we would actually have a realistic chance of entering a team. Things were looking good and we ended up with a squad of over 30 players - from experienced Black Ferns to new players to the game, young school girls (some only 14 years)throughto“mature”players.Notonlythat but we were the most international team in the competition with players hailing from America, Japan, Italy, France and the Islands!

Fraggle had a big job ahead of her to coach this totally new and hugely diverse team - and all on her own. The senior players were always going to have to step up and show their leadership skills. Thank goodness I am also an experienced teacher - as these skills came in handy when organizing this bunch of ladies!Our goal at the start of the season was to

make the semis and then if things were going well - make it to the final and win! It was always going to be a big ask with a totally new team, coach and manager.

Getting to know each other, building basic fitness, refining, or in fact learning, some basic skills and then determining positions for people were the main tasks for the first half of the season - all whilst stamping our mark on the competition. And we certainly did that with winning 3 out of our first 4 games convincingly, and drawing with Varsity. Then we met Sydenham in a midweek evening game and although the girls put on a strong performance, Sydenham were just too strong and left us with our first defeat. We then followed on with another 3 wins, before losing the last game of the round to Belfast. It was definitely looking interesting for the second round and our initial goal of making the semis was still very much on!

Round 2 started with a loss to Varsity and then a shock loss to HSOB. It was time to take stock of what was happening. We had a mid season reflection session - and although there were disruptions to our game preparations we had to deal with those. Some weeks we were without our our captain Steph Fox to Black Ferns training camps and test series, and she always led on the field so it was time for others to step up and do the same job. Girls had to also feel comfortable playing in a variety of positions and sometimes were thrown into these at last minute due to injuries and unavailability of

players. Management also couldn’t possibly make every training session and game, so again senior players had to take on extra duties leading and organizing the team. As we reflected on the all of this we also looked back on the team and individual goals we set at the start of the season and reminded ourselves that we were not going to use Blame, Excuses and Denial - but instead would live above the line - taking Ownership, Accountability and Responsibility. It was time for our team motto to be put into action.

A chance for this arose when we played Sydenham, playing not only for ourselves but also for the Challenge Shield - and we did it! We took the shield off Sydenham. We continued on this high, winning the next 3 games and securing a place in the semis. Unfortunately Belfast came out fighting in the last game of the round and took the Shield off us. Although it was a huge disappointment, we were glad we helped to share the shield around and get a new teams name on the trophy (outside of Sydenham and Varsity).

In our first season we achieved so much, and many of our team made finals footy for the first time. Our team will be all the better for these experiences this year.

Congratulations to the many players in our team who also achieved higher recognition this year.

I would like to acknowledge the amount of support we got from the club in getting our team up and running again, especially Mike who had to put up with constant questions and requests!

DIVISION TWO

With the dust clearing from a topsy-turvy 2013 both on and off the field, I am able to report on what has been a highly enjoyable season of rugby that almost got us the ultimate reward.

The first competition game was against the defending champs New Brighton on CFC 1. With a fair amount of fortitude shown we were rewarded with a victory and the hallowed Challenge Shield to start the season. That same fortitude grew with victories over a disappointing Marist Albion side, a sticky Burnside team, and a literally vacant Suburbs.

Back to earth we came with a thud thanks to a committed Lincoln University side who gladly paraded their new prize, the Challenge Shield after convincingly giving us a good old fashioned towelling. And Lofty gave the team another towelling at the next training as well, which didn’t do the trick as we went down to Sumner and a dogged Linwood mob. Nick Jones did his best to grab victory from Linwood’s grasp with a last play penalty, but “Aaargh,nocigar”.

Up steps Mikey ‘Geezer’ Rinaldi off the bench with fifteen to go against a woeful Belfast side Sheldon Park. We’re only a couple of points up, and he decides to show his arrival by producing a chip kick and re-gather inside our own 22 before giving it to Kimeon Reade who gets caught short of the try line, but eventually we get the try.

That victory was short lived however as we got out-muscled by an enthusiastic Sydenham side the next week. The after match beer is not going down well.

Onto HSOB and they embarrass us by giving us an upper cut in the first twenty, before giving us the knockout blow in the second half. But what do great sides do when they’re down and their backs are against the wall. They get back up and show what a great side they are.

The last game of the first round is at home against Shirley. Down on the scoreboard for much of the game Mikey Mullins keep us in touch by kicking a 49m penalty that just gets over the crossbar. We then turn on the afterburners in the last three minutes and thanks to a mistake by the Shirley first five, we score a converted try on fulltime getting our noses in front when it’s needed most. This game turns out to be the turning point of our season as we picked ourselves up when we looked dead and buried.

Onto the second round and we’re grouped with New Brighton, Sumner and Linwood. Time for us to get tough! New Brighton up first which will be a stern task as they beat Lyttelton the week before and got the Challenge Shield off them, and we’ve got to play them at their place. What a game! Tom Casey made a successful return at fullback, Mikey kept kicking the goals and Angus Middleton gave us a hand against a strong crew of seasiders. Things got tight, but we

got more physical and ground out a brilliant 28–27win.AndthevictorygotustheChallenge Shield just like in the first game of the season. We knock over a plucky Linwood outfit the following week and outclassed an average Sumner side at home the week after that, so we’re in to the finals and going really well.

HSOB come to CFC full of confidence for the semi-final, and I have to admit I’m not feeling great about our chances as I had bad memories of our game against them earlier in the season. Chris Kerslake was in to first five after not being back long after an injury break, and Carlos Sumner was into fullback from the successful Div 3 team. Carlos would play an important, unexpected part in this game.

We play with excellent intensity for most of the match but with three minutes to go, HSOB with the wind kick a long range penalty to snatch the lead from us. But our boys got tough!!! We got our own kick off and after a couple of rucks are awarded a penalty out in front. Nev Magee thought it was a short arm penalty so taps and goes. We lose the ball, they try to kick it out but fail, and we get another penalty five metres in from the left hand sideline on the forty metre line. Carlos points to the post for a shot to win the game. He’s struck the ball well all day, but this one isn’t quite hit as solidly as the others. It’s close though, so close it hits where the right upright meets the crossbar, ricochets back into the field where a charging Stefan Bendall somehow finds it in his mitts, and beats two defenders to score next to the posts. The ref doesn’t award it immediately checking the touchy’s to see if Stef was onside. After what seems an eternity the ref finally awards the try. Woohoo, there were man hugs all around!!! A lot of CFC supporters and even more HSOB supporters watched that game and agreed it was one of the most enjoyable, exciting

games they had seen for a while. We won, and were into the finals.

Over to Lyttelton with Chris Hill given the captaincy for the final and we give it our best shot. Lyttelton came out stronger than us in the first twenty minutes but we claw our way backintothematchtobedown15–9withless than 10 minutes of the first half to go. But a couple of mistakes later, we turn around 27–9downatthebreak,andeventhoughwe kept grinding away we couldn’t get back thedeficit.Finalscore27–14toadeservedLyttelton team that were well supported by their locals.

Chris, Terence and I were so very proud of the team’s efforts all season, especially with all the disruptions throughout. They showed they have the fortitude to go one better in 2014, and I hope the players who return have learnt from being in a final.

Redemption was the word around the squad throughout the season after an unexpected loss in the final last year.

Retirement to some old stalwarts brought some fresh new faces to a team in its fifth year. It’s great to see a new generation of players in there early 20’s learning the ropes offthisnowexperienced“30something”side.

As a team we narrowly led in the double round robin to take out the Hawkins Cup, we valued every bonus point available to keep us at the top. Injuries threatened our season late in the round robin but the ship stayed steady with careful management of our player resources. We carried that form into the semi finals and then the final against New Brighton and took out the Championship 19-3 in front of a strong home crowd at CFC. Redemption was complete and the Hawkins Trophy was ours for the summer, together with the Challenge Shield.

Great to see some of our players supporting Div 1 and Div 2 late in the season with some extraordinary success.

Well done to Brendan Hall for winning the McCully Cup to add to our impressive haul of silverware.

Our goal at the start of the season was to make the semis and then give us a chance to defend the championship we won last year.

With Daniel O’Brien’s elevation to Div 1 Bruce Morton came on board as the backs coach from the under 20’s ably assisted by Alex Ritchie who was taking a break from playing whilst nursing a serious neck injury. Ross continued with the mantle of forwards coach. We started the season with a strong forward pack albeit having lost 6 of last years pack. William Mills Div 1, Jack Burmester Div 2 Harry Jones Div 1 Sydenham, Hamish Munro Div 1 Burnside. Ethan Plaskett was also elevated to Div 1 although still eligible for colts and played a number of games for us this year. Brad Tucker started the season between Colts and Div 1 but suffered a serious leg injury in a first round match for us against Lincoln University which finished his season. Mitch Harding left to play in Australia. On board came Oakley Johnston an outstanding talent at No 7 from Christchurch Boys, and Matt James another talented youngster No 8 from St Bede’s. Elevated from Colts 20’s came Luke De Beus , Chris Thomson and Ricky Agent. We started with a new backline James Richards Will Duncan and Eliott Scott coming up from the Colts 20’s with both half

backs Jordan Stone and Mitch McCann out of Christchurch Boys. Tom Bates first five suffered a serious injury in the same game as Brad Tucker which finished his season. The other new backs were Ben Cooper (St Bedes) Sean Murray (St Andrews) Rupert Chapman, another Harry Millar who arrived near seasons end. Kane Williamson from the Colts 20’s also backed up when required. We started the season well with a first up win against Sydenham last years beaten finalist and followed this up with two more good wins before dropping our first game against a strong Old Boys side 16-9 in a night match. The difference that night was their half back Mitch Drummond who has now been selected for Canterbury ITM Cup team. He scored both their tries that night. I guess it shows how tough a competition the Colts Premier grade is, and certainly will benefit Christchurch in the long term as they build again another strong Div 1 team in the future.

After the Old Boys loss we went through a difficult patch in the next few games losing to Lincoln University and Burnside, then Sydenham and University in the second round.

The turning point for us was our second round match against New Brighton eventual semi finalists at Rawhiti where we eventually patched the holes in our defence and simply played them off the park. Then followed a draw against Lincoln University where we led 17-3 with ten minutes remaining only to draw

17-17. We still put in a strong performance against a team that had soundly beaten us in the first round. A good win against Shirley followed and then another good win against Burnside to clinch a semi final spot. Although being defeated in the semi against Lincoln University the boys could hold their heads high only getting beaten on the post in the final minutes. Throughout the season our captain Scott Harpham led by example and was rewarded with a number of games in Div 1. We certainly missed him in two games we lost.

Jackson Taylor was hampered with rib problems most of the season but battled bravely and played his best footie at the end of the season. Our other prop Duncan Ewart carried a huge workload and played every minute of every game. Angus Hawke punched above his size at hooker and as the great club man he is was a great influence on the new boys in the team. Chris Thomson and Luke De Beus excelled in their lineout duties and Luke assisted both Div 2 and Colts 20’s when required. Peter Donaldson still only young showed immense strength at No 6 and also has a bright future.

No forward pack got the better of us all season and it is a credit to Ross’s coaching methods that this was so. Jordan Stone was the pick of the backs at half back and was rewarded with a number of games in Div 1 albeit on the wing. Will Duncan at full back was safe and Ben Cooper 2nd five showed the most improvement as the season went. His goal kicking also became a bonus. All the backs played competently but we probably lacked a game breaker that we had the luxury of last year.

However it is a credit to Bruce and Alex that when we finally settled our combinations there were considerable improvement towards the end of the season particularly in defence. Our bench was again strong and there will be some very good lads who will come through to Premiers from the Colts next year. Some have already had a taste. The forwards however did score more tries than the backs this year. Not uncommon this year in the club however.

Those leaving Colts this year are: Ethan Plaskett, Scott Harpham, Brad Tucker. Chris Thomson Duncan Ewart, James Richards and Eliott Scott. I am sure they will all add value to whatever Christchurch team they play for next year, although I understand James is heading to the UK to follow a cricket career. I would like to acknowledge the amount of time that Ross, Bruce and Alex put into the team this year and again Kashi’s assistance and enthusiasm. He was also a great help with the Japanese boys who came to the club. We also had George Beale with us part of the season a prop from the UK who had to return for the start of their season. Hopefully you will return again sometime in the future George.

Kurt Harrington (Physio) was instrumental in ensuring that everyone was mended come game day, for which we were most grateful Kurt. Our thanks to all parents and friends who supported the team and in particular to the Axemen of the club who gave great support and know who they are. Also to our President Gerald Wilson who always made a point of getting to our games when not on any of his sabbaticals.

They started as a group of boys and ended a team of men.

Before the season the coaching team of Alan Harding and Jimmy Jones wondered as usual at this grade what personnel they would end up with. Well it was another mixed bag with a reasonable number from last year, a couple from other areas/clubs but mainly school leavers. We further kept with tradition by having a plethora of players for some positions and a dearth for others (just remembered those words from school whilst using the slate tablets). Having said that they appeared to be a good set of lads and they set about training with alacrity.

One of the many vagaries with Colts ruby is the fact that we at Christchurch are lucky (thanks Mike O’D), to have two Colts teams which is great for competition for places but means that Alan gets more grey hairs every week and even has a few less, when Ross makes the usual call and says Alan I NEED …….. this week, as one of my players has …..

In my humble opinion over the last couple of yearsthetwoteamshavechangedfrom“twoteams”toonesquad,andthishasbeentypifiedby the help players have given to the other team.

The season went from strength to strength, and despite the usual injuries and holidays we won the final, all be it shared. Yes after 100 minutes ofrugbywedrew11–11withMarist,andIhate to say this but the result was probably a fair reflection of the game. Both teams left

everything on the pitch.

As for the players it would not be fair to name individuals in such a fine team, but one or two deserve recognition.

Issac Leota stepped into the captain’s role and grew both as a leader and a player. The responsibility did not diminish his playing abilities, rather improved them.

We had players such as Harry Chapman who joined us late played out of position, but also played out of his skin. Oliver Stevenson who saw the light and came over from the dark side (soccer), and despite never having played the superior game (Rugby), he excelled. Matt Brabazon has always been a good player but he rose to the challenge of the final rounds and showed true commitment. Reuben Buzzard, well what can I say, he was amazing and example to all. I could go on and on and say something positive about each player, but two epitomise the team. Geoff Wingfield, turns up week after week despite getting little game time, and still turns up at the club house for a drink after (a surprise to anyone who knows Geoff). George Enwood started the season but got injured early on, out for the season but still turned up to training and the games.

As I said through the season, we are fortunate to play a great game, we are fortunate to enjoy it and blessed if we find true friends whilst doing so, for many friends you make now will last a lifetime.

TIt’s with a two finger salute that we farewell another season, the Canardlys 20th, and what a great season it was to be a part of.

With the actual rugby being a roller coaster ride of epic wins and some pretty ordinary losses, the 95 percenters, or coaching team of Aids, Goat, Norm, Fridge, Hitman and Slipper (rugby is 95% coached after all) have collectively pulled out enough hair to make their mascot (Mr Thomo) a new head of hair.

With the team again lead by Lefty, the big win for the Canardlys this year was in team spirit, team numbers, discipline and growth that will hopefully see a fortieth reunion. From a coaching point of view both Aids and myself have relished in seeing the bulk of team returning every week for a beer in the club, as well as being able to boast not one red card this year and only three yellow cards (yes Macca, on reflection who really was the retard).

Performance wise the accolades this year went to Mike (back of the year) who not only turned up for more than three games, but glued the back line together and really stepped up into making the first five position his own. Grunter (forward of the year) propped for 80 minutes in nearly every game, his hard hitting no nonsense style hopefully washing off slightly on the rest of the pack. Canardly of the year went to Aids deservedly

so, as a huge amount of the success of the team came from his relentless organisation, guidance and sheer will power. and more importantly it allowed me to ride on his coat tails and look like I was also organised. A special thanks to a new player who probably won player of the day more than any other player, well done Mr Swagger!

A huge thanks to the teams sponsors who really have been a major boost across the board, who also make the running of a team so much easier. When Graham Mitchell handed over the reins at the end of the 2011 season he handed thWhen requested to complete this year’s report I will admit to struggling to remember when it all started. Whilst we may only have an 18 week playing calendar the preseason planning, registration and other aspects takes us back to January 2013.

Our registration days were delayed as we waited on the car park to be resealed. In hindsight this was a bad decision on our part as it put unnecessary pressure on the committee to ensure all teams were sorted prior to Easter and the school holiday period. Having said that we got there in the end and registered forty three teams (later dropping to forty two) and playing numbers at 573. 2012 playing numbers were 577 with forty teams.

Prior to the actual playing season getting under way, Easter weekend was a big milestone for the Club in reaching its 150th season. The junior involvement included in house games on the Saturday morning for U6 to U11, a CFC v Napier Marist Old Boys U12 curtain raiser for the main game and on Sunday three Japanese teams from the Osaka region playing against our U12 and U13 teams.

So with strong numbers registering again we felt confident that we would be in for another good season. Arranging all these children into teams does not get any easier. Finding coaches & managers, playing strips at the rights sizes, balls, bags, rippers & mouthguards continues to be a challenge and this year it was pleasing to see all the CFC teams out fitted in sublimated jerseys. It has taken a few seasons to replace all the cotton jerseys and we believe that the sublimated jerseys will look smarter and last longer.Our biggest growth in numbers was our Under

6 grade. 110 players (13 teams) registered this year (10 teams in 2012). We welcomed back Scott Murray to the committee after a few years away. It would be fair to say number there were a lot more teams then when Scott left but in the end he did a great job in sorting out coaches, players and parents. Thirteen teams meant some inventive work on team colours was required and this year we added Charcaoal, Amber and Chrystal.

Under 7 this season was looked after by Amber Field. Amber had the ten Under 6 teams last year so found the five Under 7 teams a bit easier going. This was in line with the number of teams and players the previous year. Amber also looked after the team photos which we thank her for.

Under 8s this year were looked after by Rhonda Kennett. This is the first year for tackle and teams moving to 10 aside rugby. Having looked after most of these players and coaches the previous season Rhonda’s five teams did very well. Numbers were not as high as 2012 but the same number of teams. We had teams spread evenly across the sections. Once again there are some very talented players in these teams and the future competitive grades look exciting.

Steve Leiataua, in his final year on the committee, continued to look after the same teams who had moved to the Under 10s. In their final year of 10 aside these five teams continued to play good rugby. With three teams in Section 1 and the remaining two in Section 2, we are looking to have some good teams for 2014 as they enter into competition grades and 15 aside rugby. Steve also continued to arrange coaching nights in conjunction with Mike O’Donovan, for coaches on various topics such as tackling.

JUNIOR CLUB

Margaret Harry looked after the four Under 11 teams this season. We had two teams in Section 1 (Yellow and Red), Panthers in Section 2 and Black in Section 4. All teams did well in their respective grades and three of the teams made their respective semi final which is a great effort and with red and Panthers making their finals but falling short in close games. The Red team also won the Challenge Shield.

I had the privilege of looking after the Under 12 grade. We had too many players for two teams but enough for three. In the end with a bit of juggling around (moving some to U12s and some to U11) we ended up with two teams, one in each section. The Red team did well to win the championship and hold the Challenge Shield. The Black Hawks did well to make their semi final as well.

Under 13s were looked after by Tanyia Legge in her last season on the committee. This year we had three Under 13 teams which we have not had for some time and were reflective of the number of Under 12 teams from the season before. The Gold team played in Section 1, Red in Section3 and Black in section 4. All teams made their respective semi finals. Gold won the Championship, as well as the Challenge Shield and Black won the Section4 final. A great effort.

At the annual club dinner the U13 Gold team also had honours of being the recipients of the O’Loughlin Family Cup as 2013 JAB team of the year. U12 Red Coaches Jeremy De Gouw and Mark O’Loughlin received the Bryan Mustchin Trophy for JAB coach of the year.Our thanks also to Graham Austin who after several years stands down as a delegate to the CRFU Metro Junior & Teenage Committee.

Murray McEwan, our treasurer, a big thank you. Murray continues the task of ensuring we operate within budget. Not an easy task when you have so many teams and players that you could spend a lot of money on quite easily. .

Club Day continued to be the success that is. To have all forty two teams play at CFC on this day took a great deal of organising. The weather was on our side again and the fields held up well.

Teams afternoon and nights continued to be well patronised this season.

Prize Giving was run in similar lines to the last season. The splitting of the grades gave a chance for all teams to do their thing without the facilities being too overcrowded and ongoing.

Sponsors continued to play a big part in JAB. Mark O’Loughlin of Harcourts Gold supplied all the teams with Player of the Day trophies. This year we also did Player of the Day packs (boot bag full of goodies) on team day/nights. Our thanks to Christchurch Electrical, Frontrunner Bush Inn, Shaun Bradley Builders and Stirling Sports for covering the cost of these and One Good Horse for the Player of the Day vouchers..

JUNIOR ADVISORY BOARD COMPETITIONS


This year the number of Trustees increased and we warmly welcomed Craig Armstrong and Bob Eastgate as Trustees. Stephen Dillon retired and we sincerely thank him for his contribution.

The build up in Trustees we hope will assist in the challenge of encouraging new ‘young’ members. If you played your footie in the late 1980s, 1990s early 2000s and you are reading this as a Dad of a junior boys and girls or you are still an interested party we want you and your playing mates to join us and enjoy the comradely and contribution that been a CFC Axemen bring.

The contribution the group makes to the club is an important part of the continued success of the Christchurch football club. For that we again thank all our members and encourage those whose boots have recently lost their weekly polish and parade to come forward and talk with us about next years membership options.

Over another busy club year the Axemens’ Saturday evening table had some quite

nights but also some very notable evenings on the back of the Jubilee celebrations. The Axemen made a significant contribution to the Jubilee with financial contributions to the new Directory Board, the sail over the barbecue area and the digitising of the photo archives of the Club. We are also looking at a project in conjunction with the EB Millton Charitable Trust to display a photo and story board of the clubs All Blacks in the entrance way to the Club.

Our traditional Christmas dinner is on Wednesday the 27th November this year and we thank our last year’s guest speaker Gath Gallaway who helped make this evening an outstanding event. We look forward to seeing the Axemen at this function.

2013 would have to be the biggest milestone for the Christchurch Gentlemen. 150 years of playing rugby is no easy accomplishment. Playing rugby at our age is no easy accomplishment either. It’s not recommended for the light hearted or any other heart condition for that matter.

This 2013 season once again saw the Golden Oldies play in several games and tournaments.

Named after those burly Gentlemen of Christchurch playing 150 years ago, the Christchurch Gentlemen opened their season playing in the Easter weekend celebrations against regular competitors the Burnside Battlers. It was a great weekend. Players coming out our ears! Old players back for the weekend’s celebration, friends from Japan keen to play rugby in NZ and a bunch of young Oldies keen to get a run somewhere meant we had no issues fielding a team.

Fast forward a week to the Woodend tournament. Our numbers were back to their usual, just managing to scraping teams together is a regular occurrence. However gratefully we were bolstered by a few old Bangorians coming into the team and we managed to always field a team with a reserve or two in most of our games.

The Gentlemen’s usual calendar of games also included Prebbleton, Blue Bullets, another weekend away at Hanmer Springs for the Hurunui Rams and ended with the Kaiapoi tournament.

Not too many injuries over the season and as usual results were irrelevant.

Well done to the Club on reaching its 150th and congratulations on a very successful Easter weekend.

CHRISTCHURCH GENTLEMEN (GOLDEN OLDIES)


Once again the season has flown by and we are now getting ready for the summer fun. After a pretty slow start when it looked like we would only have three teams, we ended up with seven teams entered in the competition this year. SeniorASide–thisteamstartedoffslowlythis year, and suffered a few losses, but as the season went on they really gelled as a team and made huge improvements. This was a real team effort this season, especially with all the support for their rookie coach. The girls were very patient and supportive and it was truly the meeting of the minds. I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching this team and look forward to seeing them back next year. This year three teams played semi-finals, the C, D, and F teams. The F team made it to the final. The C team lived up to their reputation of being undefeated, and made to the final, which they won. To all Managers and coaches, a very big thank you for your commitment to the club .It is extremely difficult to find coaches and managers each year so I cannot thank you enough for giving up your time, without you guys we wouldn’t have teams. I would also like to thank the club umpires, Lisa Gordon and Hayley Ching who turn up every week to umpire games for the club. It is not an easy task, and while there have been some unpleasant moments for them , they have continued to do their job to the best of their ability . To all the teams, thank you for your continued support of the club. You guys are what make

this a great club to play for, you are such an awesome bunch of people. The Committee, another year gone!! You are such a great bunch to work with, and without you guys we couldn’t run a club, so I would like to thank you all so much for your time, hard work and commitment this year. This year we joined up with the Rugby Committee, and this has been very beneficial for the netball club. The building plans of Westminster Sports are progressing with our project manager working on a number of fronts to get plans finalized. We have also recently engaged a planner to assist with securing of leases and to help with resource management application matters. We have consulted with a number of Council staff, Committee’s and Community Board representatives to ensure our plans to build a covered four x court Indoor Facility will meet the needs and future demands of our members, sport and the community.

We are also having a Sport Club Partnership database designed which will assist our clubs with managing better their memberships and operations. We plan to trial it in the coming month with several member clubs events/registration days.

In the school space several things have changed. We have withdrawn our support of a School Sport Coordinator resource in Mairehau High School as it was not providing the outcomes we had planned and wouldn’t given that school’s present management.

Due to MOE decisions on school closures, our cluster of local primary schools where we deliver KiwiSport services also changed.

Our KiwiSport Coordinator continues to produce excellent outcomes in the new look environment and we expect to be able to engage other schools in our catchment and extend our reach into the community in the 2014 year.

Contract work we undertake for another sport club also provides us with cash that contributes to our operations and we will be looking to extend this contract and take on others in the coming year to support revenue generation plans.

For the financial year ended 31 August 2013, a total of $122,233 in funding and grants was secured by myself for the benefit of CFC.

Westminster Sports would like to thank CFC for provision of office space and access to facilities along with Alan and Tim’s input around the Westminster Sports Board table.

The 2012/13 Financial Accounts published here are subject to audit and at the time of publication, the audit had not been completed .

The Audit report will be available at the AGM.


The Financial Statements show a deficit for the year of $58,883, a disappointing result after last year’s surplus of $38,894

There are various reasons for this position. Amongst these are:• Thecostsassociatedwithmaintainingthegroundsincreasedbyover50%.

• Repairs&Maintenancetothebuildingsandcarparkwere$47,306fortheyear.Thesecosts relate to the insurance excess that the Club has had to pay to date on its earthquake insurance claims and repairs that were not covered. These include the balcony and the floor in the women’s toilets, along with other improvements that were carried out prior to the 150th Jubilee.

• TheProfitfromtheBarandRestaurantdecreasedfromthepreviousyear.Wehavealready taken steps to rectify this for next year.

• ThecostofrunningFootballincreasedsubstantiallyto$57,165fortheyear.Thiswasmainly attributable to increases in Team Expenses, and Gear and Clothing.

Fortunately the occupancy of the Motels is very high, resulting in a very favourable result for the year. As well, over the last few months the income from the rental of the Clubrooms has increased substantially and looks very promising leading into 2014.

Please note that, as in previous years, we have not consolidated the subsidary Christchurch Football Club World Company Ltd into these financial statements. This means that these accounts do not fully comply with generally accepted accounting practice (GAAP). However, the Board and the directors of CFC World believe this departure from GAAP is in the best interests of the Club. The Club will consider complying with GAAP in the future and the incoming Board will be looking at the various options available to it to achieve this.

The Club’s dependence on obtaining Grants continues and we must get better at cutting our cloth to suit.

2014 will be a challenging year. We have to control our costs even better than we have in the past, improve the income streams that we have and find other sources of income.

My thanks go to Charles Knibb for his continued work behind the scenes in preparing the monthly Financial Reports and in preparing these Financial Statements.
