Next Ice Age Workshop by Emma Pomeranz

On May 15th, 34 skaters of all ages participated in a Next Ice Age Workshop led by Nathan Birch. The

Next Ice Age is an organization started by Nathan Birch and Tim Murphy that has performed all over the

country with the likes of legends such as Dorothy Hamill.

Nathan Birch brought the characteristics of NIA style skating to the workshop in order to improve skaters'

elegance and power when performing. There were two sessions, one for younger skaters, and a later class

for more experienced skaters. Birch taught a series of exercises that help skaters perfect the art of skating

with beauty and grace. His talent and strong guidance aided in making the classes very successful! Skaters

were fortunate in improving their performance skills and their ability to skate in groups. Thank you so

much to Nathan Birch for taking time out of his busy schedule to teach these skaters!

Graduating Senior Award

US Figure Skating has a Graduating Senior Award program, which recognizes student-athletes who have worked hard to pursue figure skating while maintaining their academics. It is the goal of US Figure Skating to ensure these athletes are recognized for their achievements.

There are four categories of recognition based on competition and test achievements in all disciplines of figure skating. Student-athletes are rewarded based on their highest level of achievement at either the Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze level.

4 of CFSC Members have been award this honor at the Gold Level.

May Recital

The Spring Recital held on Sunday May 1st was a very well-attended event, showcasing over 70 club and Learn-to-Skate skaters and a large audience of family and friends. The evening started with a skills demonstration of over 30 learn-to-skate students, under the guidance of coach Pat Muth and Wende Jones with assistance from our very own Glide with Pride Instructors. The students skated in patterns and showcased their abilities, confidence on the ice and enthusiasm for the sport.

30 club skaters performed their individual freeskate and dance programs ranging from Basic Skills through Intermediate, as well as Pre-Juvenile Dance, in preparation for the May Day competition the following weekend. The Chesapeake Sapphires performed their Theatre On Ice Freeskate program, choreographed to selections from "High School Musical."

Immediately following the recital was an awards ceremony recognizing Faith Zaruba as our 2016 Good Sport Award recipient, our graduating seniors, and our skaters who passed senior tests during this past year.
