CHRONICLE

CHRONICLE BATH

The village of Claverton lostmany of its men in the FirstWorld War.

Like almost every village in the coun-try, most of the men joined up andswapped idyllic English countryside lifefor the horror of the trenches.

A group of women from the villagegot together recently and came up withthe idea of creating a book about theClaverton men who fell.

Vi Jensen (below) said: “We wantedto bring their stories to life. Theyare not just a statistic, they are allmen with a real story, withfamilies and connectionseither in the village or furtherafield.”

A war memorial at thechurch features the names of12 men who fell, but there werea lot more as the parish wasmuch larger then.

Ms Jensen said: “Our localhistory group did alot of research oneach of the men,to find out asmuch as wecould aboutthem, we

wanted to bring them back to life.”The group concentrated on the men

named on the memorial. The book, with a page devoted to each of the 12men, will be placed in Saint Mary’schurch in the village in time for a specialRemembrance service on Sunday,November 9. It will give details of eachof the men, from research at the recordsoffice in Taunton, The Bath Chronicleand the national census.

One example is a Private WilliamJoseph Briscoe, who was killed on 1stJuly 1916 during the first day of theBattle of the Somme.

His body was never recovered and hisname is inscribed on the Thiepval Me-

morial (memorial to the missing ofthe Somme).

Records show his mother,a cook, lived in Clavertonbetween 1914-17 with herfamily.

The Bath Chronicle ofJuly 1915 reported a Private

W Briscoe of 3 School Place,Claverton was fighting in

France.Anyone with information about

war life in Claverton or thesurrounding parishes,

or who may be re-lated to the fallensoldiers, can e-mailw w w.cl ave r -tonww1@ btinter-net.com .

Investing in the community for 25 yearsCall centre manager Stephanie Martin helps customers with questions about their bills and o ers advice to those who have problems paying.

“Fortunately for most of our customers, the bill they receive from us is affordable; on average, it represents around 1.5% of their household expenditure.“But we know that for some paying their water and sewerage bill is a problem. “Through our tailored assistance programme, tap, we are now helping

more than 15,000 people who have problems paying.“In many cases we are able to offer practical help to reduce their water and energy bills. For others we have been able to help them repay debt or offer lower charges while they get back on track fi nancially.“As well as directly helping customers, our Money Matters scheme has

supported 10 community organisations running projects to improve fi nancial capability among young people and vulnerable customers.”

Investing in the community for 25 yearsWith the help of a CCTV robot nicknamed Arnie, Nick Henley and Nick Harper search for blockages in our sewer network below Bath. The problems they discover with Arnie, who can travel 350 metres along a sewer, are of-ten caused by fat poured down sinks which later congeals.

With some sewers no wider than 100mm - less than the length of an iPhone - it is only a matter of time before the congealed fat causes a blockage, or even worse sewer fl ooding.

In Greater London Britain’s largest ever ‘fatberg’ was discovered - it was a lump of food and fat mixed with wet wipes the size of a London bus.

Around 75% of sewer blockages are caused by disposable personal products like wet wipes which, when mixed with fat create so-called fatbergs.

Collection tips & fundraising ideas

Here we offer a handful of tips in support of your campaign, from coupon collection to further fundraising ideas. Even little things can make a big difference.

Tips on how to collect:1. Start collecting coupons. The more coupons you collect, the more money your organisation will receive. The first coupon will appear in the Bath Chronicle on Thursday, November 13, along with the spread of all shortlisted groups.

2. Rally your supporters. From family and friends to neighbours and colleagues, tell everyone about your special cause and encourage them to collect coupons on your behalf, printed in the Bath Chronicle until Thursday, December 4. Don’t be afraid to get the wider community involved by putting up posters and placing coupon collection boxes in shops, schools or local community centres.

3. Look out for special coupons. We may be printing double value coupons, so keep your eyes peeled and make sure everyone knows when they appear. Please note that photocopied coupons will not be counted.

4. Send your coupons in to the Bath Chronicle by 12pm, Wednesday, December 10. The amount of money each organisation receives will be revealed in the Bath Chronicle once coupons have been counted and verified.

A campaign in Bath is askingpeople not to give to beggars.

The Your Kindness Can Killcampaign has been relaunchedin the city and is asking peoplenot to give beggars money.

The campaign, launched inMay, has been created by thecharities and support organisa-tions in Bath who give practicalsupport for the homeless to helpthem promote the message that

simply giving money directly tobeggars does not help solve theproblem and in many casesmakes the problem worse.

To date the campaign hasbeen successful in reducing thenumber of people begging onthe streets as well as signpostingservices to those genuinelyhomeless. But at this time ofyear when people tend to begenerous in their donations the

group feels it is timely to remindpeople about their campaign.

The group behind the cam-paign includes Julian House,The Big Issue Foundation, Avonand Somerset Police and theBath BID company.

When giving can be cruel, not kind

The growing number of home-less in Bath means emergencybeds provided by homelessnesscharity Julian House are almostalways full.

The charity provides 29 emergencybeds, 20 of them in its Manvers StreetHostel which also operates as a drop-inday centre for rough sleepers and otherhomeless people.

The men and women who pay £3 tostay in the hostel overnight get a tiny,

single-bed “pod” to sleep in and a fobkey to come and go as they please.

They also get three meals a day andthe opportunity to shower and washtheir clothes, and an on-site GP clinictends to their medical needs.

But meeting clients’ basic physicalneeds and providing them with a pleas-ant, stable environment is just a pre-cursor to the real help they receive fromthe hostel, according to Julian Housefunding director Cecil Weir, pictured.

“Providing a bed solves nothing,” MrWeir said. “The really important workhappens (during the) engagement pro-cess which identifies why clients havehad to knock on our door in the first

place. It’s only through identifyingthose reasons that you can really prop-erly get the clients on that journey offthe streets.”

Each client that stays overnight at thehostel has their needs assessed and isassigned a key worker to help themmove on to more secure and independ-ent accommodation.

“There’s a dearth of suitable accom-modation in Bath,” Mr Weir said. “So-

cial housing is in very short supply andsupported housing is even scarcer.”

This Christmas a campaign has beenlaunched to urge people to donatemoney to charity, rather than directly topeople living on the streets.

Investing in the community for 25 yearsAs head of waste treatment at Wessex Water, Ashlea Lane oversees the treatment of millions of litres of waste water every day.Since Wessex Water was formed in 1974 sewage treatment has undergone a revolution. In those days it was not unusual for the River Avon through Bristol to be chlorinated in the summer to kill the smell.

Today the quality of the water we return to the environment after treatment has never been higher - we achieve 99.99% compliance

with sewage discharge consents. And we continue to invest in better treatment such as the £26 million improvement scheme at Weston-super-Mare sewage treatment works to improve water quality.

This will help to protect further the coastal waters and bathing waters in the Bristol and North Somerset area for the benefi t of both the environment and local people.

The work that Ben and his colleagues are doing has helped us to achieve the lowest ever leakage

Today we are investing in new technologies to help us to reduce leakage even further.
