DAYTONA SOLISTI 2020-2021 CONCERT SEASON PLANNED

Daytona Solisti has planned its new 2020-2021 concert season to be very exciting with beautiful and lively professionally performed music by the master composers. All concerts will be performed on Sunday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church.

With concerns about social distancing likely to continue down the road I have scheduled concerts through the beginning of the year with small groups which can play with comfortable social distancing if still recommended. Social distancing can also be maintained in the sanctuary during the concerts.

For the first concert of the season, October 25, I have put together a small Classical orchestra for our “Mozartiana” featuring our new concertmaster Olga Kolpakova performing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4. The concert will also include Mozart’s Overture to La Finta Giardiniera and beautiful Symphony No. 33. The orchestra consists of Jamie Kruger and Chris Jones on oboes, Dale Whitman and Michael Williams on French horns and a small string section, making it easy to retain social distancing.

On November 22 Dr. Michael Rickman will present a solo piano concert continuing Solisti’s celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday anniversary year. This concert will feature Beethoven’s Sechs Bagatellen, Op. 126 and the magnificent Piano Sonata No. 23, Op. 57 “Appassionata”.

We have begun a new series for our newsletter! How well do you know the friends and acquaintances with whom we have worshipped? Sometimes not nearly as well as we would like! So, our beloved occasional pianist, Dr. Ralph Russell, has agreed to write a

brief biographical series entitled Getting to Know You. The first of the series follows….

A VISIT ON MARY ANN’S BACK DECK

Comfortably seated with glasses of tea, we began our conversation. I asked about her favorite hymn(s). Her reply was that her favorites had changed over her lifetime as she had changed. As a child, she loved the hymn about hearing the story of Jesus. As a youngster, she liked Fairest Lord Jesus and sang it as a solo. As an older teen, she enjoyed Camp Merri-Mac near Montreat, and there she found How Great Thou Art very meaningful. As she matured as an adult, she worshipped most effectively with Amazing Grace because she had come to realize the abundance and richness of God’s grace.

She added that she invariably thrilled to the words of The Holy City: “And no one was denied” access to God’s grace. She mentioned how moved she was by a trilogy Rusty Baker had played: Were you there; Morning has broken; and and the last segment of the musical Lord’s Prayer: “For thine is the kingdom . . . .”

Born and raised in Jackson, TN, she and her four brothers went to Sunday School every Sunday. Her undergraduate education was at Vassar; her seven years of graduate study in French literature was at Columbia University. When she left Columbia, she had completed the requirements for her Ph.D. except for the dissertation. She had frequent trips to Paris, was engaged to a Parisian, and had some study at the Sorbonne.

When asked the three things she remembered positively about France, she said “the difference between a bidet and a toilet, living in an entirely different culture, and the challenge of living unexpectedly with no money for a while! Credit cards were not widely used and she depended on money from home so it took some time to exchange letters and get her money! With no money for Metro fare she loved walking the streets of Paris. Her father had invested in a local hotel. When he decided that Mary Ann had had enough school, she was sent to Daytona Beach to manage the hotel. She did so successfully for thirty years, making many friends in the process. Hers is the rare success story: she is both a scholar and a businesswoman. When asked what was the most positive thing about hotel management, she said that it was the ministry aspect; to her surprise, she eventually was marketing to religious groups for beach retreats and other gatherings. It all started with a fall season she faced with no bookings, so she wrote to every church within driving distance to invite them to consider her hotel for their meetings needs.

And they came. And they came. And the hotel prospered!

When I asked what she did for fun, she said Bible study, Louise Penny mysteries, golf, bridge, and travel. If she comes for dinner, she would most enjoy a baked potato with mucho butter!

As I left Mary Ann and her back deck, I resolved that I would certainly see her again; she is too interesting as a person to pass up on life’s journey!

LETTER FROM CAT ABBOTT

(Donald and Lucille’s daughter)

Greetings, First Presbyterian Church of Daytona Beach from the Land of the Rising Sun!

As summer begins to finally awaken, the sun rises earlier than most appreciate (around 0630 hours) and has been setting ever so late (1920 hours). Too, the rain has brought grey skies for most of late April and May. The heat is slowly becoming smothering and the humidity promises muggy days lie ahead of us.

But even as summer creeps up, our movement has virtually stopped because of the pandemic. Finally though, we are seeing COVID-19 begin to dwindle. Currently there are two cases on island, but no new cases in the past 28 days. Things are normalizing, but slowly. Our restrictions are also slowly lifting. Thus far we’ve gained back take-out food orders and Outdoor Recreation (off base) and are hoping we will see more freedom come our way this coming Friday (June 5th).

My life during COVID-19 has been one spent working in various forms: I have Teleworked. I have worked ECP (Entry Control Point/Personnel...basically a guard) where I sat in a tent for hours

on end ensuring people are where they should be. I have done Training on my job, and been in and out of my office for various reasons. However much of this time has been spent waiting and hoping the situation would pass.

Okinawa has been lucky. Mostly it’s due to a combination of culture and government procedures. Because people have cooperated, there have been a rather low number of cases and deaths. Of course, we hope Okinawa will be saved from another wave and can stay free of the virus.

I will be excited to get my freedoms back and do some more traveling. I hope to see Kyoto soon and the Akihabara district (basically anime central) in Tokyo as the trip after that if things remain stable. With the later months of summer come Okinawan festival season where colors and culture flood the streets. The Orion Beer Festival coincides with the Esa dancers (traditional group dances done in traditional

outfits and music). Many people drink Orion beer—native to and brewed on the Island—then watch the dancers and often end the nights with a large fireworks display.

Early October brings the World’s Largest Tug of War to downtown Naha, the largest tourist town on the South side of the Island. The festival begins with teams of people balancing poles on belts around their waist as they parade down Kokusai street (a popular street in Naha filled with shops and restaurants). Just prior to the Tug of War a team carries a platform over the rope. People dressed as opposing emperors do a small theatrical fight over the center of the rope. Then people flood onto the streets choosing between East and West to pull on the rope. The fight lasts probably close to 30 or so minutes. Finally a large ball drops releasing Origami paper as confetti and the ropes are cut for souvenirs. It’s a great time to be in Okinawa to enjoy the culture and people!

(continued from previous page)

Before all of that, though, I begin college classes June 17 in pursuit of an A.A. degree. This semester’s classes will be Statistics and Elements of Nutrition. Both should be easy since I took Stats in high school and friends tell me Nutrition is relatively simple. I am excited to begin college even though the next few weeks will be very busy.

I also hope to start baking and cooking again. A coworker is reopening her home and inviting us to use her kitchen as things again return to normal. I have been slowly working on becoming a cook, thankful to not yet disappoint nor ruin anything (but I'll knock on wood to not jinx myself). I mostly cook to break away from the monotony that is the chow hall menu of the same few items week in and week out. That, and you just can’t get home cooking out in town. Of course, by starting experimental cooking now by the time (if I do) get out or married (KIDDING! No one like that in my life yet), I’ll at least be able to reasonably feed myself without the trial and error stage…besides new recipes.

Anyway, I hope you are all doing well as things begin to normalize. I hear that Daytona has been more lively than it should be. I hope that all can be managed by the DBPD and that everyone stays safe if the situation recurs. I also pray that the hurricane season will be mild even though it tried to start early again this year (typhoon season also started early here).

For the Youth, I know many of you do not receive this letter but I want to put in a note to you all. Hopefully Muriel will read this to you. First I pray that the 2020 Graduates come out of this year strong despite the feelings you may harbor against all that has happened. Yes, you probably feel robbed of the key events of senior year, but try to remember there are still many years of joyous memories ahead of you. Please stay strong and remember to pursue your goals endlessly. Do what is best, not what others expect of you. Even if there is a deviation from the norm, it may be the best for you despite resistance from others. So go after it because you never know what the future holds.

To those still in school, I hope next year things return to somewhat normal and that you can reconvene at youth group. Please try to attend the summer camp if you can (if it happens) because it’s not only a great way to connect to God but also where many memories are made. You will remember them fondly later on! I hope you all are well and that even though you may not know me, I wish you all the best.

Anyway it’s about time to wrap up this letter. Thank you for all the prayers and I hope that soon the church will come alive again with everyone in attendance. I miss the mornings of greetings as one moves up the aisles and the hugs from each and every one of you. I pray you all stay healthy and strong and that life returns to normal.

Signing Off,

Cat
