    March 2018 Bulletin

Commitment to learning High Expectations All can succeed Confidence and Courage Everyone valued equally

    Dear Parents and

    Carers

This week I had the pleasure to represent

Chace at a conference. The main speaker at

the event was Amanda Spielman, Her Majesty's

Chief Inspector and Chief Executive of

    OFSTED.

She spoke at length about her vision for

education in England and I was particularly

struck by how much of what we believe in as a

learning community matched with her own

priorities for all schools, particularly around our

belief in a broad and balanced curriculum offer

for every student, developing a love of

    learning.

This term, so many of our young people have

been demonstrating that love of learning -

both in the classroom and also though

increasing numbers of students giving up their

free time to enhance their learning. Many of

our older students will be continuing to invest

their time on learning during the Easter

    holiday.

Parents and carers have a key role to play in

supporting our young people to be successful

and I am grateful to all of you for supporting

us to support them to be the best they can

    be. Daniel Bruton Headteacher

On 31st January our GCSE and A Level Drama

students went to the Harold Pinter Theatre in

Leicester Square to see The Birthday Party.

On Thursday 15th March GCSE and A

Level Drama students went to the

    Vaudeville Theatre to watch 'Lady

    Windemere's Fan' an Oscar Wilde

play directed by Kathy Burke and

    starring Jennifer Saunders. The trip

was a huge success, giving students

    yet another wonderful opportunity

to see live, professional theatre in

    the West End!

    Year 11, 12 and 13 students on a trip

to The Royal Court to see Carey

Mulligan in the 'Girls and Boys'

    "Immersive. Moving. Modern. Carey

Mulligan shone in front of the

    audience, leaving our class fully

    engrossed in the story and

Phase one is under way to making

    our Chace environment greener.

Students are now served dinner on

    plates rather than polystyrene trays

    and we have purchased recycling

bins for our waste. We are recycling

    serviettes, plastic bottles, dessert

pots, drink cartons, yogurt pots and

    food waste.

Phase two will start after Easter!

    Mrs Roper and her

    husband are both

    running the London

    Marathon to raise

    money for Christian

    Aid, a worldwide aid

    agency that supports

    and works with

    everyone of all faiths or

    none. Mrs Roper has

    never run a marathon

    before and has been

    training since January.

    Chace

    Hello

My name is Joshua Williams and I am

proud to have been elected onto the

School Council and working with my

colleagues to help make the school a

better place. I will be working on the

    Environment Committee with Martine.

    Year 7

Alannah Chimonas, Lucy Brown, Vanshi Gunesh,

Rene Kande, George Kavanagh, Martine Matei,

Karm Neteru and Joshua Williams have re-

cently been elected to be members of the

School Council. We are enthusiastic to share

the voice of the students and to introduce and

discuss new ideas which we think will benefit

the school and fellow students. Through

meetings we are able to fully communicate ideas

and thoughts that we have received from other

    students.

    Lucy Brown, Year 9

We are delighted to announce the election of 8

students to the Student Council with two

representatives from each Year Group. The

Council has already decided that it will focus on

    4 main priorities including

    Charities

    Rewards / Praise

    The Environment

    Communication

Students have already started to work with each

other and staff to decide which local charity/ies

they should support and how to make Chace a

    greener school.

    Budding Chace Vets

Thanks to all parents who contacted me regarding the careers talk for students on careers with animals. This was a last minute session as my colleague lectures for the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). Apologies for those who missed the session or couldn't make it, however we have built a strong link with the RVC and will be working with them in the future.

Further to this, I am delighted that three of our Year 10 students have been successful in their applications to be accepted on the Easter programme with the RVC. We are planning for them to deliver a session to Year 7s, 8s and 9s on 19th April in the Library after school about their experience as I was inundated with Year 7s wanting to attend. However the pitch of the sessions was KS4/5 based. Please ask your son/daughter to attend the session on 19th April in the Library if they are interested. This will be mainly for Years 7 to 9, but all students are welcome.

The next step is to arrange trips for those students who have shown interest in veterinary science. We will be arranging a visit to the RVC in Potters Bar to see vets in action. More information to follow after Easter for those who have attended any of the sessions organised by Chace or by the RVC.

The RVC Teen Vet Club is available for all secondary age students to join http://www.rvc.ac.uk/study/rvc-for-all/teen-vet-club

    Uniform and Standards

Thank you for all your support in keeping the high standards of uniform over this academic year. With the warm weather arriving

could you please continue to support us in ensuring students have jackets on cold days.

After Easter, hoodies will be confiscated on arrival at the gates and returned at the end of the day in the first instance, with persistent

offenders having them confiscated for longer periods.

There is also a significant increase in the use of headphones. These will also be confiscated if they are not put away when asked im-

mediately or if students continue to use them and need further reminders to put them away.

We are adding headphones and ear pieces to the minor infringements in the Positive Behaviour Policy, so headphones / ear pieces

will be in line with our phone rule, which is, if seen they will be confiscated and returned the same day unless students refuse to hand

them over or are not cooperative when spoken to.

Finally please ensure your son/daughter has appropriate footwear. If there is a medical reason for not having the correct footwear

please ensure that they have a note explaining if there is new medical information we need to be aware of. If there is any other rea-

son please let us know so we can support parents/carers if needed. Please contact Mrs Barnham, Parent Support Advisor, for more

    details.

We wish a restful Easter break and look forward to working with you in the new term.

    Many Thanks, Mr Vekaria

    Science Trip to Paris—February 2018

Some of our students in Year 9 were very lucky to be

able to visit the Cite des Sciences et de I’industrie in

Paris during the half term break. The purpose of the

trip was for students to get an understanding of the

science principles they have been taught in class and

see some of them in action. The group of 40 students

and accompanying staff marvelled at the range of

exhibits on show. These included the Solar Impulse 1

aircraft that flew across America in 2013, exhibits

based on the Homeostasis system, Sound and Light

as well as a large Geode located in the grounds.

The group then made their way to Disneyland Paris

where they experienced the effect of rollercoasters

on the human body and the science behind some of

    the attractions.

The whole party really enjoyed themselves and the

students were worthy ambassadors of the school.

You may have noticed in our February Bulletin a feature advising students how to gradually stop depending on social media as part of a seven-day Digital Detox. We took this message further during a recent Year 7 assembly and demonstrated to students and their form tutors the positive effect of being “offline”. In addition, our Digital Eagle, Moska from Year 9, enlightened her audience by demonstrating how much time it would take a hacker to decode a simple password and a complex password. Judging from the brief murmurs in the background, this took most students and their form tutors by surprise. Moska demonstrated how to create a complex password, so that users can improve the protection level of their information, whether it‟s a simple login to the computer network or viewing emails. By having a complex password, you can ensure a safer computing experience knowing that your information is better protected. Try combining two words together, intermixed with numbers and special characters, such as £, $, %, ^ or &.

    Chace Governing Body

Message from Chris Hyland, Co-Vice Chair of Governors

Dear Students, Carers and Parents Tracey Jenkins, our Chair of Governors, has asked me to write a few words for this bulletin. I joined the school‟s Governing Body in March last year. Joining a new school in any role –be that as a new student, a member of staff or a new Governor – can be a bit daunting and it can take some time to „find your feet‟ and settle in. Many different factors influence how easy or difficult that process is, but perhaps the most important one is how you are received by the people you are studying or working with. From my experience I can honestly say that all of the community in Chace have made me feel extremely welcome and I am sure everyone else joining the school will feel the same way. As a Governor I think I have one of the most exciting roles in the school. We meet regularly with Mr Bruton, Ms Douglas, Mr Vekaria and the leaders, teachers and staff. We have an opportunity to review and contribute to the excellent plans that are constantly being developed and implemented to improve teaching, learning and student life at Chace. We get to meet students, participate in learning walks and to visit lessons to see teaching in practice. We also get to meet with parents and carers of the students. In all these interactions I am consistently impressed by the energy, enthusiasm and vibrancy of life at Chace Community School. As a Governor I am involved in reviewing some of the more serious discipline issues. Thankfully these are rare and infrequent but it is important for everyone to remember we are all ambassadors of Chace, both inside and outside the school. A huge amount of effort is being put into raising the profile of this school to let everyone know what a great place this is to learn in. We all have an important part to play in ensuring the wider community sees that this is the case. On behalf of the Governing body I would like to thank all the staff at Chace for the huge effort they have put in over the last half term. I hope you all have a peaceful Easter and a good break and above all best of luck to our Year 11s and 13s as they come up to their GCSEs and A Levels. Remember – keep up the hard work! Chris Hyland Co-Vice Chair of Governors

    Aim Higher Project

FRF is coordinating a project called ‘Aim Higher’, in partnership with Work Works Solutions,

where we work with Enfield residents, especially those who are economically inactive. Aim

Higher is about progressing candidates that are unemployed and looking for work, or

economically inactive people above the age of 19. We offer a range of services including 6-12

hours of support of Information, Advice and Guidance followed by the option of transitioning

into education, training, work placements/volunteering/job search, employment and sustained

    jobs.

We are working in partnership with Work Works Training Solutions to deliver this project. This

partnership allows us to work closely with other training providers and employers to provide the

above mentioned services that will reduce social isolation and take Enfield residents closer to

    the labour market.
