BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEMMine development involves making

excavations necessary to access the orebody and support mining operations.

Excavation dimensions depends on mining method used. It undertaken to minimize amount of waste to be excavated to accommodate equipments/materials and services that go along it

Development of these openings lags behind scheduled targets.

PROBLEM STATEMENT Bulyanhulu gold mine is currently

experiencing problems in mine development progress in which, the designed monthly 530m mine development advance is not being met.

This results into lost future production, which then affects overall profitability of the mine.

This causes longterm impacts on future production of gold.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

To assess the effectiveness of the mine development activities in view of achieving the planned monthly target of horizontal development advance

Page 5: Chacha Final Year Project presentation

Cont.….SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

To assess the activity duration of various mine development cycles.

To identify and quantify the effect of each of activity taking place in mine development area using simulation.

SCOPE OF THE PROJECTThis project based on mine development

sections to determine constraints in development rate and mine cycles and their effects to the monthly plan target

The project concentrated on activities carried on during mine development. (TIME STUDY)

SITE VISTING AND DATA COLLECTION

The project based on waste development headings , which is in deep levels about 1.2km where excavation size of the headings is 5m width by 5m height.

Data collected in horizontal development headings.

DATA ANALYSISSTATISTICAL ANALYSISThe data was analyzed by EASYFIT

SOFTWARE to determine behaviour of each activity duration and it statistic parameters.

GPSS/H SIMULATIONThe cumulative probability function

obtained is used in GPSS/H simulation.

DISCUSSION OF RESULTSFrom statistical analysis the problem

observed on mucking, drilling, bolting, extension of utilities, and charging time which shown high standard deviation and dispersion.

From Simulation results, monthly planned advance metres obtained is 483m which should a target according to the current activity duration.

Page 26: Chacha Final Year Project presentation

Cont....Traffic on ramp (Super-ramp and Ramp

A) and queuing at loading and dumping point (1-3980) leads to increase cycle time of haulage which affect mucking.

Mining delays such as Equipment breakdown, Skilled Labor Shortage, Ventilation, Electric Power, Face not clean, Water and flooding at the faces, materials being far from the face to be charged.

Page 27: Chacha Final Year Project presentation

CONCLUSIONAT 3980 LEVEL Queue at tipping point which increase

mucking and haulage duration and leads to affect other activities.

Since there is only one tipping point (1-3980) which create queue during dumping process hence increases the mucking and haulage time.

Page 28: Chacha Final Year Project presentation

Cont…BELOW 3980 LEVEL (DEEP LEVELS)Because of Truck system used at

Bulyanhulu, cycle time increase due to equipment breakdown at super-ramp (3800 to 3980 level) which only one truck can pass at a time.

Flooding of underground workings mainly due to the frequent breakdowns of pumps (kombi pumps) which stop of activities.

Page 29: Chacha Final Year Project presentation

Cont…Operational and service factors such as

Operator efficiency and experience, Materials storage being far away such as explosives, leaking of vent tubes, Remucks and loading point are far away from the face.

Page 30: Chacha Final Year Project presentation

RECOMMENDATIONSTo install conveyor belt at super-ramp

from deep levels to (1-3980).

Perimeter blasting should be introduced to reduce overbreak, minimize ground support requirement and scaling.

Page 31: Chacha Final Year Project presentation

Cont…Provide promotion and motivation to the

operators.

To introduce roof bolter this will reduce bolting time to enhance development.

To introduce another tipping point at 1-3980 to reduce queuing at rock breaker.

Page 32: Chacha Final Year Project presentation

Cont…Improve ventilation especially at deep

levels of the mine includes replacement of leaking vents to ensure adequate air supply to the working areas.

Adequate training to the operators should be given to make them more efficient to will follow SOPs.
