oin Parkinson’s UK on Sunday 29 April 2018 when we will be returning to Welford Park for our sponsored Walk for Parkinson’s. There will be twoJ

different circular walks available, a 2.5 mile walk and a more challenging 6.5 mile walk around the beautiful Welford Park estate, home of the Great British Bake Off.

During the walk you will cross the River Lambourn, climb the hill to see the impressive cricket pitch while overlooking the historic Welford Park, explore the wonderful woodland before crossing the fields and taking in the lovely views of the surrounding countryside.

Entry fee is £10 for adults and £5 for under 16s and all walkers will receive a Parkinson’s UK t-shirt, plus a medal on completing the walk. The funds raised from the Walk for Parkinson’s – Welford Park will go to Parkinson’s UK to support the vital research work taking place to find a cure for Parkinson’s and improve the lives of the 145,000 people in the UK who are affected by the condition. Services for March - St Andrews Church

Sunday 4th - 8:00am Holy CommunionSunday 18th - 10:00am Holy CommunionFriday 30th - 2:00pm Good Friday Service

Great Shefford Under FivesPre-School - Tues, Weds, Thurs 9.30 – 2.30pm

We have welcomed several new children to pre-school; Joseph, Davina, Bella, Isla, Jess and Sophie since Christmas plus two additional staff; Sarah and Becky. The children have enjoyed a wide range of activities around the traditional tale of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’; a bear role play cottage, making porridge, learning songs, acting out the story in front of the class, listening to audio CDs of the story and watching puppet retellings. We have been delighted that the children have really learnt the tale and have enjoyed the different activities around it.

The weather hasn’t always been kind to us, however, we have still enjoyed our outdoor learning every day. We have visited the churchyard to see the wonderful carpet of snowdrops, have walked across the fields and experienced the mud and frozen puddles. A visiting health professional joined us at the park and commented on how exceptional the park equipment is for the children’s physical development and how well behaved the children are both walking to and at the playground. That was good to hear.

We are delighted to have received a grant of £500 from the Xerox (UK) Trust for small woodworking tools and associated resources which will give us a new, challenging activity to enjoy, both indoors and outdoors. We will let you know how our carpentry skills develop!

If you have a pre-school child and would like to see the opportunities and care we offer, please do call in to visit us or look at our website, www.greatsheffordunderfives, for further details and contacts.

Baby & Toddler Group – Monday 9.30 to 11.30am.

We provide activities and toys for babies, toddlers and pre-school children as well as refreshments for all. The group is organized by two Under Fives staff, Morven and Angela, who offer a warm welcome and make sure new visitors feel included. The session costs £3 per family.

we hope to attract more people. On the 1st April we are holding our annual fun dog show alongside our New to You sale and have classes for dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds. As well as having games, a raffle and refreshments we are also inviting stall holders along so there will be plenty of things to see and do.

The centre held its first online pet show a few weeks ago and following the success we are hoping to run then regularly so keep an eye out on our Facebook page (@nawt.berkshire) for the next one. We have also started online auctions as well which are becoming popular to help the animals in our care. Therefore we are always looking for donations to use in the auctions so if you have something that we could us they would be gratefully received.

As always we are always looking for volunteers to help at the centre. We are in desperate need of someone who can help with maintenance and someone who could list items on eBay for us. Please contact Beth Kent, events and volunteer coordinator at the centre if you think you can help.

Parish Council Minutes

• West Berks Council (WBC)have not cleared the grips, resulting in excess water on the roads. Councillor Murphy is going to contact the Parish Councils of surrounding villages to determine whether carrying out the work collectively would be a better option

• The Parish Council is considering contributing to the funding of the Route 5 bus, in order to extend this service beyond the school term days.

• No further communication has been received from WBC regarding registering The Ibex as a Community Asset.

• WBC have complained that some of the signs for The Ibex are on Highways property. Councillor Murphy is in ongoing discussions with WBC on this matter.

Next meeting is Tuesday 6th March 2018 at 7.30pm at the Village Hall. All are welcome.

Response to PC article (Feb '18)

we get lots of services.

These include(but are not limited to) a weekly collection of our waste or recycling (we can even recycle textiles), education, including the provision of schools for our children, and environmental health officers to check that the restaurants we eat in are safe. We also benefit from trading standards officers who work to protect our rights as consumers, the police service and the delivery of elections, (including parish elections) which are at the very heart of our democracy. They also provide social services care for elderly people and vulnerable children.

It is not the fault of our local councils if reductions in government funding means that services have to be cut.

nibbles and nice chat (but strictly no gossip). There is no pressure to actually read, finish or discuss the book!

For those who do enjoy reading it is interesting to read something a little different to one’s normal groove. We have decided that in the next few months one person will recommend a favourite book, old or new. The book for March will be “The Shadow of the Wind” by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.

The March meeting will be on Wednesday 21st March at Purley Farmhouse, School Hill, the home of Christine Patterson. Please call Lea on 01488 638 488 or email [email protected] if you wish for any further information.

I would like many more people to join so that OUR Village Hall continues. If you do nothing else in the Village please support this. winter social.

Having dispensed with the business side of the evening we settled down for a welcome hot meal of Shepherd's Pie cooked by the committee. This was followed by home made desserts and excellent cheese. The meal was accompanied by wine and soft drinks. Members were able to put their grey cells to work with a quiz sheet which had been left out on the tables. This seemed popular, as was the raffle. This year's programme was discussed and we meet next on Monday 19th March in Leckhampstead Village hall at 7.30pm when Thomas Stone is coming to talk on Hardy Geraniums. Thomas has a wealth of gardening experience having started his gardening life at Mottisfont where his father was Head Gardener, moving on to the Sir Arthur Hillier Gardens and then some private gardens in Sussex and Hampshire before starting his own Horticultural Services business.

We have agreed to join Chieveley Gardening Club for a coach outing to Exbury Gardens on Saturday 28th April. Total cost for coach and entrance is £20. The coach will leave from Chieveley Village Hall. Please contact the secretary Lea Naples 01488 638488 if you are interested in joining this trip, non club members are welcome. Hoards and Treasure - Special Exhibition - West Berkshire Museum

objects, not just coins. Visitors may be surprised to learn that a hoard can officially consist of as few as two items, as long as they meet certain criteria.

Together with the excitement around finding a hoard, these objects are fascinating because they hold so many secrets and stories that we can only guess at today. Some smaller hoards may simply have been items lost by a traveller, others that were found with a container may have been deliberately buried for safekeeping. New thinking on the reasons for these objects being intentionally buried is also presented: were the Bronze Age tools a hoard of metal buried by a metalsmith for safekeeping or were they intentionally damaged and buried as offerings to a god?

There is also new debate around the burial of some of the larger Roman hoards which questions our traditional view of these deposits. It has been suggested that these larger deposits are possibly a community adding their coins to a communal offering or collection. Roman coins are the most commonly found in West Berkshire, with a total of six Roman hoards in the museum collection. As with much of history, there are more questions than answers, but this exhibition has enabled the museum to show items in its collection that have not been displayed together before.

Also on display are Treasure items that have been found locally, some of them as recently as last year. Treasure items and other finds are reported through the national Portable Antiquities Scheme which is greatly expanding our understanding of the past. Anni Byard, the Finds Liaison Officer for this scheme in our area, provided helpful background information on the legal definition of treasure and the importance of recording findspots and artefact details on the Portable Antiquities Scheme’s database. People can search the PAS website to look at beautiful photographs of the objects found in their area, and the database has provided the basis of hundreds of research projects.

The exhibition has been presented as though the visitor is looking underground, peeking at the different hoards deep within the soil layers.

rought together for the first time at West Berkshire Museum are 13 hoards from around West Berkshire. The hoards range in date from the Bronze Age (over 4000 years ago) to the late 18th century, and contain all sorts ofB

Ruth Howard, Curator at West Berkshire Museum said, “It was very exciting developing this exhibition; thinking about the people who lived in this area hundreds of years ago and imagining why they buried what we think of today as ‘Treasure’ is what makes these objects so compelling.”

West Berkshire Museum is open Wednesday to Sunday 10am – 4pm. Entry is free but donations are most welcome.

PLEASE HELP!

TRANSPORTATION NEEDED BETWEEN CHADDLEWORTH AND HUNGERFORD.

I need transportation to and/or from my home in Chaddleworth and Herongate Leisure centre in Hungerford.

I am an off-peak member of Herongate, and would like to swim 4 or 5 times a week to help me recover from heart surgery last year. I had a stroke during the surgery, and still have lingering effects from it, such that I am not allowed to drive.

If you are already a member of Herongate and go regularly, and would be willing to take me with you, I’d be glad to help with petrol money. Or, if you are not a member but would like to be, I would exchange membership for transportation. Alternatively, I could get a ride to Herongate at 7am when my husband goes to the train station in Hungerford; I would then need a one-way ride from Herongate to Chaddleworth about 8:30 or 9am on weekday mornings.

Please call Margi Layman on 01488 639 518 if you would like to discuss this further. THANKS
