ChaiLitesDuring a recent Shabbat morning drash, I taught a RaShI comment that explained that when Moshe began teaching the
Torah, he did so in seventy languages. Unfortunately, RaShI didn’t explain why Moshe needed seventy languages for this. Other commentators teach that this comment is to help us understand RaShI’s opening comment on parashat Bereshit. RaShI begins his Torah com-mentary by teaching us the reason the Torah begins with “In the beginning” and not with the first commandment given to B’nai Yisrael (the command-ment to observe Nisan as the first month on our calendar). RaShI wants to establish that G-d is the creator of the world and has been involved with it from the very beginning. Not only this, but also that Israel has a place in the world. RaShI continues his comment by stating that the nations of the world will call Israel “thieves” because they stole the land from its other inhabitants.

Not so, according to RaShI. Because G-d created the world, G-d can put whomever G-d wants into the land.
I’ve always loved this RaShI. It is a very deep comment and no matter how many times I read it, I always find myself thinking deeply about it. This comment reminds me that G-d, from the very outset of creation, has a plan and that plan includes Israel and the Jews.
Israel is near and dear to all our hearts. Each of us is pained when Israel is physically attacked by those who would see Israel removed from the map. We are troubled, as well, when Israel is attacked verbally by the press and by those who want to see Israel portrayed in the worst possible light. It seems that Israel is always under attack.
Because Israel is in the news with the recent Iran deal, I found myself thinking about what it means to be a Jew living outside Israel and what it means to support Israel. I also found myself reflecting on RaShI’s comments.
We all need to support Israel. I am not going to tell you with pro-Israel groups to support because no one group has the market cornered on the truth. I am not going to tell you what to say or how to say it. I will say that the best way to support Israel is to make aliyah. But I know that many of us are not in a position to do this. Nevertheless, we have to support Israel.
And this is where RaShI’s comments come into play. The Torah was taught in seventy languages so that no matter where Jews found themselves, there would be a spark of Torah. But the comment also suggests that G-d knew that there would be Jews living outside the land of Israel. G-d has a plan for the world and that plan includes Jews living in Israel and outside Israel.
Our job as Jews living in the Diaspora is to make sure that we make sure that the rest of the world knows Israel’s im-portance. We need to be spokespeople for Israel. We need to make sure others know that Israel is at the forefront of technology and industry. We need to make sure the rest of the world knows of Israel’s continued commitment to human rights. We need to make sure that others know that Israel is the lone democracy in a volatile Middle East.
Whether we support J-Street or AIPAC, whether we buy Israel Bonds or plant trees through JNF, we need to support Israel and make sure others support Israel as well. Even though we live outside the Land, we are an important part of G-d’s plan. We are in many ways PR people for Israel. Through our unwavering and vocal support of Israel, others will come to support Israel as well. When that happens, and may it happen soon, there will be peace in Israel and the Middle East.

If Music Be The Food of... Prayer?
It was not long ago when I was listening to
NPR that I heard a conversation discussing
the universal language of music, and how
music can affect our thoughts and emotions.
For me, being a Cantor, music is the primary
medium through which I express my spirituality, and my love of
our religious tradition. I use melodies to experience and, I hope,
allow others to experience with me, a connection not just to
our liturgy, but also to our traditions and history as a people.
Judaism is a faith remarkably rich in musical traditions of all
kinds. In different parts of the world, Jews express the same
liturgy using different scales, melodies, and modes. Attending
services, for example, in France, Italy and England, I saw first-
hand these differences in the presentation of our liturgy.
In today’s world, we have access to music from all over the
world with just the click of a mouse. Our consciousness of
sounds, sights, and even food has been expanded as tech-
nology has intruded increasingly in our lives. One benefit, how-
ever, is that what once would have seemed foreign to our ears
now sounds almost normal and even beautiful because
Notes From the CantorBy Cantor Beth Schlossberg
Congregation Kol Ami • August 2015 • Av / Elul 57754
of the opportunity for familiarity with what formerly was not
so familiar.
Secular music, with its ability to tell a story and allow us to see a
movie in our minds with but instruments and voice, is amazing.
It can make us laugh and cry and everything in between. If a
song on the radio can accomplish all of this, why not the music
that supports our holy traditions? Among the most profound
poetry in any language, at any time, we find the Psalms. Poignant
language, the expression of strong convictions, pleas for mercy
and forgiveness, and hopes for a world filled with peace all per-
meate our liturgy. I cannot imagine a richer emotional experi-
ence than is found in the words of our prayers and psalms.
By itself, the Hebrew language can be a barrier to one whose
native language is not Hebrew or one who is not reasonably
proficient in the language. Music, with its virtually unlimited
capacity to evoke emotions, is a bridge that can carry us over
that barrier. In my role as Cantor, it is my privilege to facilitate,
for my community, a meaningful experience through prayer.
Our tradition is replete with melodies which have become
traditions in their own right and that are recognized even by
casual attendees of services. However, there are other equally
compelling melodies for our prayers that have been developed
over the years, with additional compositions continuing to
flow from the pens of gifted musicians.
Just as secular music continually evolves, shouldn’t our liturgical
music do so also? Should we introduce some of these melodies
to the Congregation from time to time to gauge their accep-
tance? Would our younger congregants, especially, welcome
the opportunity to forge, through such melodies, new and
meaningful connections to our liturgy? If music be the food of
prayer, then I say sing on! Sing on in the old, in the now, and in
the new. With the approach of the High Holidays I encourage
everyone to listen, find a melody which speaks to you, even
if it is new, and raise your voice in song. It will be a feeling
I promise, you will not soon forget.

From the PresidentBy Beverly Fink
As I am writing it is a mid summer gloomy, rainy Sunday - just a perfect day to be brightened up by thinking about High Holi-days and the New Year to come. Our new fiscal year has just begun. Our member-ship is down a net of 10 member units just since May. Our dues pledges are coming in.
With just a few exceptions, the pledges are either the same or less than last year. The words that we heard last year from Jeff Hinds, our Immediate Past President, as he expressed in his Kol Nidre address keep ringing in my ears.
Jeff spoke about Congregation Kol Ami of Cheshire, Connecti-cut, that had just closed its doors. That Kol Ami sounded a lot like our Kol Ami from the perspective of the activities that were offered and the caring and integrity with which they conducted themselves; but Kol Ami of Cheshire was “unable to live up to [their] potential” because “it was no longer financially feasible to remain an ongoing synagogue.”
Jeff told us then, and again at our Congregational Annual Meeting last February, that our Kol Ami is in an untenable deficit situation. Jeff pointed out that our previous Kol Nidre appeal was supported by only 50% of our congregation. He asked for each member to double the pledge from last year. Many of you did just that. He also asked for 100% participation at a level that is just a bit of a stretch for each member house-hold. While many of you gave generously and our appeal was successful, our goal of 100% participation was not met.
Our congregation has some good news to share. Our sinkhole issues are being remediated. This remediation is being accom-plished with money from our insurance company. We received a Homeland Security grant that is funding security improve-ments to our property that includes lighting, fencing and elec-tronic surveillance. We have substantial talented professional leadership staff in place; and we have many devoted lay leaders with tremendous expertise willing to share their time and skills for the betterment of our congregational community.
But this afternoon, I find myself wondering, is our Congrega-tion Kol Ami living up to our potential?
The lesson from Connecticut is clear: it takes energy and money to convert a synagogue’s potential into reality. Our Kol Ami is no different: Kol Ami cannot and will not realize its potential unless we are willing to commit funds to do so.
I am asking you again for 100% participation in our Kol Nidre appeal this year. I am asking that everyone give an amount that
is just a little bit of a stretch for them. Maybe for someone it is $10. Maybe for someone else it is $10,000. Chaverim, please give generously of your time, talent, energy and support of our services and programs and give generously financially so we can live up to our potential.
Thank you, as always for your support and generosity.

What is a Chavurah? Chavurah (plural is Chavurot) comes from the Hebrew word, chaver, meaning friend or fellow- ship. Each Chavurah is a group of syna- gogue members who come together to socialize and enjoy Jewish living. The program is designed to bring together congregation members with similar interests. It is a chance to get to know other members outside of synagogue, while it helps build relationships within the synagogue. For many, the Chavurah is an extended family.
Each Chavurah decides on its own blend of socializing, Jewish celebrations,com- munity service, synagogue activities and Jewish learning. Some groups are all adults, some meet with their children, and some alternate between adult and family activities. What your Chavurah becomes is up to you!
A Chavurah usually meets monthly. It might meet at the home of a mem-ber or wherever a particular event is taking place. Each group would decide where and when they would like to meet. The group also decides on what their program for each meeting will be. It might be a Shabbat or holiday meal, a guest speaker, a social action project, attending a synagogue event together or just a movie. Each individual group plans its own activities.
Kol Ami currently has nine active Chavurah groups and it’s been a while since we started any new groups. We’d like to change that now. If you are interested in being part of a Chavurah, please complete the Chavurah Interest Form (on the last page of this PDF) and return it to the Kol Ami office. Some of you may have previously filled one out, but if so we would like to request that you complete a new one. The form can also be found on our web site or in

Kids’ Konnections
As you know, it has been a busy summer in the Kol Ami building. While the synagogue moves forward with its construction and renovation, we also continue to move forward in preparing for an exciting year. For our families, we’re setting up the school, planning
programming, organizing our youth calendars, getting ready for the High Holidays, and much more. We’re work-ing on a few big projects, like putting all the pieces together for a great Sub-Regional USY convention, and setting up a calendar and programming for our K-2 and early childhood families, as well as looking for creative new ideas for chuggim and special programming for our school.
Please let me know if you’re interested in volunteering to help out with some of our summer projects. We could use your help with a variety of projects, ranging from putting up bulletin boards and organizing school supplies to attending meetings and planning programming.
Also, please let me know if you want to get together to talk about your child’s Kol Ami involvement. Whether you’re preparing him/her for religious school, working on his/her B’nai Mitzvah project, or getting him/her involved in youth groups, I’m happy to listen, or to help if I can!
I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer. Please make note of the important dates below, and join us when you can.

Courtney elias August 29, 2015 / 14 Elul 5775
Courtney is a student at Hillel Academy. Caring, kind, and smart are just a few words that best describe Courtney, and that is how others would describe her as well.
She most values kindness in a friend and, watching how kind she is to others, one
can see how one can easily see how that would be of great importance to Courtney as well.
Courtney loves to dance and has proudly won 1st place in the overall competition at a National dance competition for her production number. She is a talented dancer, but one talent she would like to have is to be able to read people’s minds.
Courtney’s goal is to go to veterinary school and become a veterinarian. Because of her love of animals she is volunteering for the Sun Coast Animal League for her Mitzvah Project.
If she could meet any one person in the world, past or present, it would be the person who discovered the Sun Coast Animal League because she wants to tell that person that he/she is a good person.
Courtney’s idea of perfect happiness is for everyone to have a home to live in. She is inspired by her parents. Her favorite Jewish holiday is Hanukah because she gets to see all her family and she loves when they gather around the candles.
Courtney is so excited to see her family and friends from all over the country for her Bat Mitzvah. She has family and friends coming from New York, Ohio, New Jersey, Arizona, Georgia and other parts of Florida. Courtney’s favorite part of preparing for her Bat Mitzvah is her lessons with Cantor Beth. Although her least favorite aspect is going to services, she has learned a lot.
mia macKinnonAugust 22, 2015 / 7 Elul 5775
Mia, a student at Hillel Academy, is look-ing forward to sharing her Bat Mitzvah celebration with many of her family and friends coming in from Florida, Massachu- setts, North Carolina, and even as far away as France.
Mia loves getting together with her family and spending time with them. Mia’s favorite Jewish holi-day is Passover because that is when her family always gets together. She describes herself as being energetic. She loves to dance, and in fact, she is most proud that she has won 1st place in a Dance competition for the overall category at Nationals for her production number. That was a very excit-ing achievement.
Something that people probably don’t know about Mia is that she likes to do archery. Mia loves animals and her goal is to go to veterinary school and become a veterinarian. She is volunteering at the Humane Society for her Mitzvah project, which is a wonderful match for her since she loves working with animals.
Mia wishes that she was a talented singer. If there is one person she would love to meet it would be Beyoncé because she finds her to be inspiring.
The most important aspect of friendship is trust. To Mia, a trusted friend is a priceless thing. Mia strongly believes that the perfect idea of happiness would be if everyone had a home to live in and food to eat. She is inspired by her parents.
Her favorite aspect of preparing for her Bat Mitzvah is planning for the party and celebrating with her family and friends. While going to services was not high on the list of favorite things to do to prepare for her bat mitzvah she has learned a lot!

The Facility Focus
House Highlights
Current projects:
As of July 26th, the sinkhole remediation work that was needed at our synagogue has been completed. Drilling and grouting were done on the exterior, as well as many points in the long hallway, Sanctuary and Social Hall on the interior.
So…..What are the next steps? I am glad you asked! In 30 days the grouting will be cured and all natural settling will have taken place. Cosmetic work and updates will then take place to enhance the beauty of the building.
I cannot go without giving a special shout out to those committee members who were so valuable in the work done so far: Mitch Weiss, Gary Teblum, Jeff Hinds, Bev Fink and Ken Novak. Yasher Koach !!!
The following is an update on the progress of our Homeland Security Grant.
By July 31st we will have many additional lights added to the exterior of the synagogue.
• Three 25- foot pole lights: 1 on the west-side entrance, 1 on the northwest area of the school parking lot, and 1 on the southeast grass parking lot in front of the Sanctuary.
• The light fixtures by the office entrance, east side of the school, and the three carriage lights on the west side will be upgraded to provide increased light volume.
• Lastly, we will have lights coming from our Sanctuary overhang to the Keblan Memorial Gardens and the two driveways.
By mid-October fencing will be added to the perimeter of the synagogue. On the South and West side there will be a decorative black metal fencing with 2 automobile gates and one pedestrian gate. On the North side of the property will be a green vinyl chain-link fence. All these fences will connect to the wood fence that that is currently on the East side of the property. During this time we will also be adding a sur-veillance system with multiple cameras around the property.
Upcoming projects:
• Landscaping of the Sanctuary entrance area
• Plans for increased storage space within the building
• Having TECO remove limbs on our power lines
I am open to your thoughts and ideas as it relates to our facilities so please feel free to contact me at [email protected]
