In my interactions with members during conferences, events and other meetings I find the use of social media to be vastly stratified. Let me list some of the categories as I perceive them a. Active IEEE Organizational Units on Social Media – R10, many sections, many societies, many society chapters, many affinity and special interest groups who are using Facebook, Twitter, Google + and LinkedIn to remain actively engaged with their members b. Very active ‘professionally’ – almost 99% of whom are student members. They have created Facebook pages for their respective OUs in IEEE across the globe. They have liked, followed and joined the pages created by their contemporaries. They post updates on whatever news regarding IEEE they get. They are active in Twitter, Google + and LinkedIn too. c. Extremely active ‘personally’ – I would say almost ‘all’ students and some members are definitely addicted to Facebook if not Twitter, Google + and LinkedIn. d. A few years ago your section had coined a tag as its mission ‘engaging members’. There cannot be a better way to realize that mission than engaging and interacting with all the members through these social media tools. Last week we had sent out a circular to you urging you to visit your section’s page on Facebook. What we wish to achieve through that circular is to persuade the members who are not in social media, to join it upon seeing the circular and for those of you who use social media for personal networking to also consider it for professional networking. The IEEE member ‘friends’ in my Facebook, Google + and LinkedIn accounts have the advantage of messaging me for whatever clarifications or help they need and get a quick response or a smileyJ at least. We can surely extend this advantage to other more resourceful members if we can connect with them.
