The Chairman’s ChallengeRichard Astle, Chairman of Shine, is embarking on a year of challenges to mark his 10th anniversary as Chair of this Peterborough-based charity.

Richard is hoping to raise £25,000 to fund a new Health and Wellbeing Centre for people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

As the Managing Director of Athene Communications, Richard has set himself these challenges: three 10K runs, five half marathons and a trek across the Sahara Desert!

This is a huge undertaking and Richard would appreciate your support through sponsorship, or maybe you could challenge yourself to run or trek with him?

The Nick Beer 10K is a memorial race held in Llandudno, Wales.

This will be the first event in Richard’s calendar and it would be great to see you there at the beginning of this monumental year of challenges.

Race details:

Taking in the beautiful scenery of Larne, Northern Ireland, this is the second Chairman’s Challenge which will see the race distance increase to a 13.1 mile half-marathon.

As well as the full run option, Larne offers both a team relay and walking option - so there’s a way for everyone to get involved!

Challenge ThreeSheffield 1/2 Marathon, Sheffield6.4.2014

The Sheffield half-marathon will see Richard return to his home town with friends and family present to cheer him along.

Challenge SixDales Destroyer, 40 mile hike, Derbyshire16.8.2014

Hike details:

The Dales Destroyer is better known as the Limestone Way, a 40 mile walk across Derbyshire from Castleton to Tissington taking in many of the best known and most beautiful parts of the Peak District dales.

Our aim is to complete the walk in the course of one day, starting at 7am and finishing by 9pm on 16 August 2014.

There are three ways to be involved:

1. Join me and attempt to complete the whole walk in one day.

2. Join me at various stages of the walk, completing sections of the challenge according to your own plan.

3. Form a team and compete against other teams to see who can conquer the Dales Destroyer first! - PRIZES FOR THE FIRST THREE TEAMS HOME!

How will we use the money you fundraise?Shine’s new Health and Wellbeing Centre ...By providing the first ever specialised Centre of its type in England, Shine will provide a vital focus for supporting the health and wellbeing needs of our members with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

They will be able to access:

• Individual ‘whole person’ health appointments with qualified Shine staff

• Occupational therapy assessments and advice• Nurse consultations for specific issues• Health courses focusing on a specific area of health• New parent sessions for parents with disabled newborns• Parent support and networking sessions• Wheelchair advice• Training courses in wheelchair skills• Support in communicating with GPs and consultants• Remote access to health professionals through Skype• Independent living skills in an accessible training kitchen facility• Equipment and aids to try.

The Centre’s outreach services will offer:

• Telephone, e-mail and Skype access for advice• A range of information resources on all aspects of spina bifida and

hydrocephalus• Advice for professionals• Training courses and health events• Peer support groups• Healthy Living initiatives
