The news from Iraq and Syria hasn’t improved as much of our year continues to focus on the grow-

ing needs of our new American population, which is anticipated to grow by 400 individuals each month. To meet this need, we are nearing the end of construc-tion for our new state-of-the-art Chaldean Community Center. This innovative facility will provide the neces-sary space for Chaldeans, refugees and others who seek critical services and assistance to help stabilize their lives. In addition, this building will serve as a commu-nity center for all Chaldeans in our region.

The Chaldean Chamber recently celebrated its 12th Annual Awards Dinner which many have boasted as one of the premier events in this region. This year’s dinner raised a record amount of dollars and was nothing short of exemplary as we honored Rafed Yaldo as Humanitarian of the Year and Anmar Sarafa as Business Person of the Year. A very special thank you to Bas and Tonya Robin from Superior Buick GMC for their unwavering support and generous sponsorship for this year’s dinner.

We have many more exciting events taking place this year, giving our members the opportunity to network and create long-lasting business relationships. Please join us at our upcoming events includ-ing our quarterly networking meeting, the Sounds of Babylon concert and annual business luncheon.

We are constantly striving to provide the best value for your investment and membership and appreciate your feedback and input. To this end, we look forward to continuing to service this region and our growing community. Hope to see you soon at a Chamber event!

Chamber Launches Civil Liberty Advocates CommitteeIn March, members of the Chamber met to form the new Civil Liberty Advocates Committee. After recent allega-tions of discriminatory practices against the Chaldean community in West Bloomfield, the committee has been formed in an effort to quell the growing practices of discrimination. The new committee will be chaired by Chamber Board Member Eman Jajonie-Daman.

Quarterly Networking MeetingsStarting the year off right, Chamber Members gath-ered at the Bank of Michigan in January to mingle with fellow industry leaders and professionals for the Chamber’s quarterly networking meeting.

The Chamber’s April quarterly networking meeting at LaFontaine Subaru attracted more than 100 cham-ber members. During the meeting, professionals from an array of occupations united and were given the chance to network while exchanging contact informa-tion and business opportunities.

Meet the CEO Dinner The Chaldean Chamber hosted a CEO dinner with special guest, David Fischer, Chairman and CEO of the Suburban Collection. Bringing new ideas and hope to a city that struggled financially for so long, Rodrick was the clear choice to head up the DEGC. During his presentation, Rodrick stated “Chaldeans are Detroit,” referencing the long history of Chaldean business owners who have purchased and revitalized grocery stores throughout the city, giving residents the opportunity to purchase fresh meat and produce.

Breaking Barriers Mass

Chaldean Community Foundation’s H.E.A.L project held their first Interpretation Mass by Sign Language on Sunday, April 19 at St. Joseph Chaldean Catholic Church. Twelve students from the H.E.A.L. Project and their families attended the first in a series, along with over 700 parish-ioners. Breaking Barriers host Valentine’s Day Party

Breaking Barriers celebrated Valentine’s Day. Over 180 participants were able to write cards and letters to special-needs families in Iraq. Many decided to include a small monetary donation with the cards. Donations of over $1,400 were collected. $500 was sent to a church in Kirkuk and $900 was donated to Adopt-A-Refugee’s new special-needs program through HelpIraq.org. The empathy felt for the special-needs families in Iraq, while these families struggle in the USA with everyday essentials, was truly touching. The attendees agreed the families in Iraq are suffering worse hardships.

Update on Capital Campaign and Community Center“Build it and they will come.” This we

know, based on the 16,000 im-migrants who walked through the

doors of the Chaldean Community Founda-tion center in 2014 alone. We are well on our way to commencing business in the state-of-the-art facility scheduled to open its doors on October 1, 2015. Currently the exterior walls are completed.

To date our committee has diligently procured more than $1 million generously donated by members of the community. The committee is well on its way to achieving the total projected goal of $5 million necessary to complete the community center, strengthen the Chaldean Loan Fund, and develop perma-

nent housing for resettled refugees. The new Chaldean Community Center

will continue to provide a range of support services in a facility that is better equipped to handle the current and growing community’s needs. Chaldeans, refugees and others who seek assistance with immigration, housing assistance, and free or reduced-cost medical and mental health care will be aided. ESL and acculturation classes, assistance and advocacy for special needs refugees, and many more services that help vulnerable people stabilize their lives and become self-sufficient will also be available.

The Community Center will serve as a gathering place not only for refugees but also

In the 1920s, ad executive Frederick Bernard coined the famous phrase, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” And while Bernard was not exactly transpar-

ent – he indicated to readers at the time that the term originated as an ancient Chinese proverb – it resonated and is still, today, quite meaningful; in particular in marketing.

In a sales brochure. On social media. In a website. Photos and graphics in general are as important as writ-ten content in telling your stories in ways that resonate effectively with your clients and customers. In fact, the two – words and pictures- should work together seam-lessly and flawlessly. Yet, more often than not, the latter (imagery) takes a back seat to editorial content in terms of attention and allocation of resources.

Where social media is concerned, both are often given short thrift with LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter often handled by the intern or office administrator who “has the time.” No offense to either but are they adept, beyond uploading and posting, on effective message development within an overall communications strategy predicated on reaching business objectives? Chances are good they weren’t hired for that. And, how often is an out-of-focus cell phone image the fall back plan for accompanying a post when the skills of a professional photographer would have been more apropos for an important event or hap-pening (not to mention that those high-resolution images could have been used for other mediums at other times)?

But to really transport an audience to where you would like to take them without their actually having to be there, video, in my view and experience, is still the most under-utilized of all of the communications avenues. This, despite the fact that Facebook, with its nearly 1.5 billion users, is the most searchable of all of the social media venues. Brief (1-2 minute), visually stimulating video vignettes can be utilized in so many ways, telling the tale through talking heads, animation, music and imagery alone or some com-bination of all. Technological advances and competition have also brought price ranges of such productions into manageable budget ranges.

As our society becomes more and more online and mobile-focused for news and information, we also need to be there – expending the resources necessary to develop and put forth content that moves and moves people to action through images that attract the eye and copy that stimulates the brain. Both are important and, when working properly in tandem, can serve as competitive differentiators in setting you apart from the competition.

The 12th Annual Awards Dinner once again positively con-firmed the Chaldean commu-

nity’s commitment to the economic, political and social climate of our region. As a testament, more than 900 people gathered to honor 2015 award winners: Rafed Yaldo as Humanitarian of the Year, and Anmar K. Sarafa of Steward Capital Manage-ment and Frankenmuth Brewery as Business Person of the Year.

Humanitarian of the Year Rafed Yaldo of HelpIrag.org delivered a compelling and poi-gnant address regarding his experiences helping displaced Iraqi Christians and other minorities throughout the coun-try. All of those in attendance were deeply moved by his humility and compassion.

Business Person of the Year Anmar K. Sarafa, the founder, President and CIO of Steward Capital Management and owner of the historic Franken-muth Brewery, shared highlights of his remarkable and inspiring business career.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder via video message and United States Senator Debbie Stabenow presented opening remarks. Saad Abbo of U.S. Ice delivered his chairman’s remarks and Mojo from Channel 955’s “Mojo in the Morning” returned as emcee.

Here are a few photos for those who missed it. More photos are on the Chamber’s website and Facebook page.

Upgrade NOW to Avoid the EMV Liability

With EMV, a customer’s credit card information is transmitted to a business’s POS device through a small microchip in the credit card instead of the current standard magnetic strip. EMV is a card-present technology, meaning the card must connect directly to a business’s POS, either physically or within a very short distance through Near Field Communication (ex. Apple Pay and Google Wallet).

EMV cards are processed by inserting the card into a slot in a POS device. A reader within the POS then connects with the card to initiate contact.

EMV cards that are capable of both contactless and physical transactions are called dual interface cards. Most EMV cards are dual interface, but not all.

EMV satisfies two main objectives: 1. Decreases credit and debit card fraud on card-present transactions 2. Creates a consistent cardholder experience worldwide

On October 1, 2015, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express will institute a Fraud Liability Shift (FLS) policy to transfer liability for card-present fraudulent transactions to the merchant. The FLS assigns liability for card-present counterfeit fraud to the party that has not made the investment to Europay, MasterCard and Visa, or EMV, chip card enabled devices.

EMV, is a global standard for credit and debit cards equipped with computer chips and the technology used in Point of Sale (POS) devices to authenticate chip-card transactions.

The customer inserts their card into a POS device and remains within the device, while providing a PIN number to unlock the card.

The customer signs a sales receipt instead of providing a PIN number to complete the transaction.

The customer is given a choice of completing a transaction by providing a PIN number or signing a sales receipt.

The customer places the card in front of a POS device to provide payment information. The customer may then be prompted to enter a PIN or to sign a sales receipt.
