YOUNG BAND CHALLENGE THE FUTURE MICHAEL STORY (ASCAP) PROGRAM NOTES On January 28, 1986, Astronauts Gregory Jarvis, Christa McAuliffe, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Rednick, Dick Scobee and Michael Smith perished when the Space Shuttle Challenger 7 exploded after takeoff. As the Nation grieved, President Reagan spoke eloquently: “This sacrifice has stirred the soul of our Nation and, through the pain, our hearts have been opened to a profound truth: The future is not free, the story of all human progress is one of struggle against all odds…man will continue his conquest of space, to reach out for new goals and ever greater achievements.
