MASTS Annual Science Meeting adds a workshop on Marine Plastics – A Scottish Evidence Plan The Scottish Government is placing much focus on understanding and combating issues surrounding marine litter and plastics. Marine Scotland is working on this in close coordination with terrestrial colleagues. In Scotland we currently have Scotland’s Zero Waste Plan (2010), the National Litter Strategy 'Towards A Litter-Free Scotland' (2014), Zero Waste - Safeguarding Scotland’s Resources: Blueprint For A More Resource Efficient And Circular Economy (2013), and Scotland’s Marine Litter Strategy (2014). These nationally implement regional and global policies such as the UNEP/NOAA Honolulu Strategy (2011), OSPAR’s Marine Litter Regional Action Plan (2014), and the G7 Action Plan to Combat Marine Litter (2015). To oversee and implement these strategies, several internal high-level steering groups have been established, supported by a Marine Plastics Evidence and Analytical Group. This group is currently reviewing published, ongoing and planned research in the areas of marine plastics, their sources, flows and impacts with the aim of

identifying strategic gaps in our current knowledge, and possible ways these gaps may be addressed in future research plans. The co-chairs of the SG Marine Plastics Evidence and Analytical Group (Amy McQueen and Bill Turrell) along with Bhavani Narayanaswamy, Head of Microplastics Research in SAMS, would like to invite you to this ASM session in order to contribute your thoughts about existing marine plastics research, and help identify current critical knowledge gaps for Scotland. See the calendar for details of the meeting, 31st October – 2nd November. European Geophysical Union science-policy dinner debate During the last week of September, the EGU hosted its first science-policy dinner debate in Brussels. The event, 'Horizon Geoscience: overcoming societal challenges, creating change', was organised in collaboration with the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) and brought together geoscientists, policymakers and industry representatives. The EGU website reports on the outcome of the discussion https://www.egu. eu/news/432/egu-and-efg-establish-dialogue-with-policy-makers-on-how-the-geosciences-can-help-overcome-europes-major-societal-challenges/.

15th-19th October 2018: 4th CLIOTOP Symposium, Oceanic biodiversity under climate change Keelung, Taiwan

Reminder that registration is still open for the 4th CLIOTOP Symposium. Come and join us to discuss Oceanic biodiversity under climate change: shifts in natural and human systems. The Symposium aims to evaluate responses to and impacts of climate variability and change on marine top predators and their food chains, as well as the dependent socio- economic and management systems. Risk assessment and evaluation tools incorporating climate variability will be identified to improve sustainable resource management, and adaptation and mitigation strategies that address the cumulative pressures on top oceanic predators and the ecosystems that support them will also be discussed. For registration and more info about the Symposium: http://www.imber.info/events/imber-working-groups-program-events/4th-cliotop- symposium 17th October 2018: Marine Measurement Forum #62 Wallingford, UK The Steering Group for the non-profit making Marine Measurement Forum (MMF) series of

21st November 2018: From HMS Challenger to Argo and beyond. NOC, Southampton, UK A one day meeting focused on how our ability to collect, process, interpret and use temperature/salinity profile data has developed over 150 years. The meeting is co-sponsored by the History Special Interest Groups of the Royal Met. Soc. and the Challenger Society and has commercial sponsorship from OSIL (http://osil. com/) who produce and distribute standard seawater. It will focus on how our ability to collect ocean temperature and salinity profiles has developed from the era of the Challenger Expedition (1870s) to the present day when the Argo array of profiling floats now provides global coverage. It will also highlight the products derived from these data and will look towards future developments. Registration and details of the meeting programme are now available at https:// conference.noc.ac.uk/hms-challenger-argo-and-beyond. Student bursaries to cover UK travel costs and registration fees are available for this meeting.

NATIONAL MEETING

Knowledge of the temperature and salinity of the oceans is fundamental to our

understanding of their internal dynamics and is increasingly important to a wide range

of ocean and climate applications.

This meeting will show how our ability to collect, process and collate these

observations has developed up to the present day, with information from about 3,800

Argo profilers providing global-scale, high-quality information throughout the year.

WWe will explore the international data collection framework, the products and

applications that use the data and look to future expansion and new observing systems.

We will see Argo floats being prepared for deployment, ocean gliders and other

autonomous vehicles in the National Oceanography Centre’s profiling fleet.

Scripps Postdoctoral Scholar - 2019 RECRUITMENT PERIOD Open date: September 6th, 2018 Next review date: October 12th, 2018 Apply by this date to ensure full consideration by the committee. Final date: January 31st, 2019 Applications will continue to be accepted until this date, but those received after the review date will only be considered if the position has not yet been filled. DESCRIPTION Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego in La Jolla, California, invites applications for one or more Institution-wide Postdoctoral positions in any of the major areas of research conducted at Scripps. Scripps Institution of Oceanography is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for marine science research in the world. Research at Scripps encompasses physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of the oceans, earth, and atmosphere. Scripps Postdoctoral scholars are expected to interact with existing programs, and candidates are required to contact potential mentors and identify mutual research interests prior to submitting their applications. Research activities at Scripps can be explored by viewing profiles of the Principal Investigators at Scripps (https://scripps.ucsd.edu/people/ faculty). Candidates are required to have a PhD degree completed by December 1, 2019. The PhD must be completed prior to taking up the appointment (due to UC regulations – at appointment start date, you can have a maximum of 3 years postdoctoral experience). The intention of this program is to expose early career postdocs to new research opportunities and the facilities available at SIO/UCSD. Awards are competitive with a major emphasis on potential for independent, creative research. The Postdoc positions are for one year, and award twelve months of salary with a minimum stipend of $62,000 plus benefits and a one-time research allowance of $5,000. An additional twelve months of support will be granted (subject to satisfactory review), totaling 24 months. Appointees are eligible for health insurance through UC San Diego. Candidate application materials including a current CV, summary of doctoral dissertation, statement of research, mentor support letter and two confidential letters of recommendation are due by October 12, 2018. Successful candidates are expected to start before December 1, 2019. For consideration, apply by 10/12/18 at: https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/apply/JPF01876. For information about the Scripps Postdoctoral Program, Reference Letters, and Mentor Support Letters, go to: https://scripps.ucsd.edu/postdocs/program.
