CHAMBER dRIvE SEtS NEw MEMBER RECoRd
T he Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce’s recent membership event garnered over 200 new members in two days. “We had an incredible team of 150 business and community
leaders that led the charge,” said Chamber President and CEO Bill Miles. “We’re grateful to have such a supportive membership. It means a stronger community for all.”
“The chamber was our first stop when we opened our company. We knew how important it would be. When businesses join the chamber, they are immediately connected to all the businesses in the area. We’ve found that members support other chamber businesses. I know we do.”
- Karen Cully, Harbour Health Insurance Solutions
“Membership and participation in the chamber has been incredible for our business over the years. We have not only gained new clients and partnerships, we have made great friends and business associates.
The chamber works to improve the business climate and the quality of life in our community. Success in these areas translates into more business opportunities for my business and an improved quality of life for me and my family.”

J une 1st kicks off hurricane season…are you ready? Do you have your hurricane kit stocked? Is your insurance plan what it should be? With a
few quiet storm seasons it’s easy to develop “hurricane amnesia” and forget that preparedness is something that needs to happen each year.
The chamber’s popular hurricane forum is going to be a televised event this year vs. the seminar-style that’s been done in years past. The goal is to reach the maximum number of residents and in partnership with Beaufort County and WSAV, the chamber is televising its hurricane forum directly into living rooms across the county. Popular WSAV news anchor Russ Riesinger will be our host along with noted WSAV meteorologist Kris Posman as well as Beaufort County Emergency Management officials and insurance experts to give you the information you need to be ready for whatever comes our way this season.
WSAV will also be hosting a live call-in show during their evening telecast on June 6th. “The station has been a true community partner and working in tandem with WSAV, the county channel, town governments and chamber members we hope to take hurricane preparedness to a whole new level, said Bill Miles, chamber president and CEO.
The event will be telecast live on the county channel on Tuesday, June 7th at 10:00 a.m. from “the bunker” at the county’s emergency operations center. You’ll be able to phone in your questions as well as via email and text. The show will be rebroadcast that evening at 8:00 p.m. and can also be viewed online via live stream at wsav.com.
Don’t miss this event.

Whether you’re building a new business or retrofitting an existing space, clean burning natural gas is your environmentally-friendly energy choice. Natural gas appliances not only make every day life better, they’re cost-effective to operate, generally last longer and require less maintenance. In addition to the environmental benefits of lower emissions, plus higher energy efficiency, more than 80 percent of the natural gas used in the U.S. is domestically produced.
Operating your business with natural gas can help reduce your impact on the environment without sacrificing comfort and convenience. If you want to make your business a little greener, while enjoying cost benefits, ask for natural gas. To learn more, call Parks Moss at (843) 815-8808 or Lucas Kinard at (843) 815-8816.

Q&A wItH lES SHIllMAN, CARolINA tERMItE & pESt CoNtRolFewer than 10 percent of all small businesses survive their first five years. Of those, only 20 percent make it to their 10-year anniversary. Les Shillman, owner of Carolina Termite & Pest Control, celebrated that milestone more than 30 years ago. This year marks the 40th consecutive year that Shillman and his employees have been protecting the island and surrounding Lowcountry from unwanted guests and destructive little pests.
CBM: How has your business developed to meet the demands of our growing community?
Shillman: What started as a single-man operation with a used pickup truck and a barrel of pesticide has grown into a swarm of more than 16 employees and a fleet of gray vehicles adorned with the familiar orange Carolina Termite & Pest Control logo.
CBM: How has membership helped your business grow?
Shillman: For more than 32 years, the chamber has been a supportive partner in business. I’ve always considered my membership a great investment in the continued success of Carolina Termite & Pest Control.
CBM: Tell us about some of the biggest advancements in your industry?
Shillman: Incorporating green products to meet environmental needs has been a very positive aspect of our service. The company now uses the most advanced and environmentally sensitive treatment options to provide the highest level of service to homes and businesses across the region.
CBM: What’s your business model for long-term success?
Shillman: I believe it comes down to a basic premise of respect. Our company owes our longevity and success to a simple promise, “We treat people right.”
CBM: As you look back at your many years of providing service to the Lowcountry business community, you’ve surely seen many changes. What keeps you looking forward?
Shillman: Hilton Head Island is a great place to call home, and I am very fortunate that I have been able to make some great friends, raise my family and stay in business all these years. We’ve still got work to do – we’re just getting started!
The job market in South Carolina continued to trend up, as March unemployment figures hit single digits for the first time in two years, dropping to 9.9 percent. The rate has declined from 10.9 percent in December, 2010.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, South Carolina experienced the largest month-to-month percentage increase in jobs in the nation. The upward momentum, seen in February, continued in March reporting 15,700 new jobs, led by leisure and hospitality with the creation of 10,000 jobs.

In today’s social media-focused economy, it’s become increasingly common to have complex business relationships with people without ever speaking to them in person—or even on the phone. More of business’s sales support, customer service, meetings and other customer-facing functions are moving to the web.
Yet, research from Cornell University and sales and marketing services company Maritz found in-person events are better than virtual events at capturing attendees’ attention, creating positive emotions and building relationships and networks.

Companies today can benefit from working together. Creative collaboration with your biggest competitor may be the best opportunity for revenue and survival.
The goal is to find a way to partner with your competitor in such a way that both parties can substantially benefit from the other’s resources without stealing customers or damaging anyone’s credibility.
It’s a great survival strategy for small companies or entrepreneurs, and a good expansion strategy for even
the largest companies.
