Welcome to the Chamber: W.I.S.E. 3-IN-1 Warren County’s Newest Business Open On Main Street in Warrenton South Main Street in Warrenton is beginning to bloom with even more life as we

welcome another new business to our community. August 1st saw W.I.S.E. 3-

IN-1 open, with a grand opening planned in the next several weeks. The first

question you’re probably asking is, “What do the initials in the name stand for?”

Well, glad you asked…Wisdom Inspiring & Serving Everyone. And how about

the “3-IN-1”? That means that there are three new businesses in one location.

The first business on Main Street is the return of a restaurant to the location at

139 South Main Street in Warrenton. Looking for a great place for lunch or

dinner? Head in for home-cooking Soul Food with a healthy focus. After your

meal (or any time) browse through “Shanell’s Boutique”. They offer unique

shopping bargains including Avon, Mac Lipstick, Panty Hose, Designer Bags,

Body Oils, Socks, Lamps, Burning Oils and Belts. And the third business is

“Transportation”. They’re up and running to provide medical, local and long

distance transportation via bus, van and car.

W.I.S.E. 3-IN-1 is open Tuesday – Thursday from 11am until 8pm. Fridays and

Saturdays you can stop by from 11am until 10pm and Sundays, enjoy great

cooking after Church from 2pm – 8pm.

You Can Help Warren County Be Designated “The Eastern Bluebird Capital of the World” Eastern Bluebird Rescue Group Has Built 300,000 Houses!

Last week I shared the

wonderful article about our

very own Eastern Bluebird

Rescue Group working on

getting recognition for Warren

County as “The Eastern

Bluebird Capital of the World”.

They are currently working

with our County Government

to complete the Resolution of

Support passed in the last

Commissioners’ Meeting. Now,

their next step is to receive the

long-overdue recognition in the NC Senate. Here’s where you can help:

If you could take just a few minutes this week to contact our State Senator,

Angela R. Bryant, and voice your support for this designation I believe that it will

help speed things through things in Raleigh. Here is her contact information:

My thanks to every one of you who adds support to this worthy cause. It’s not

often we get a chance to be at the birthplace of a local effort that makes our

world a better place.

Robinson Ferry Rolls Out Exciting New Menu! Announcement From Michael and Angela

Hey Y'all…

We couldn't be more thrilled to

let you all know that we have

new dinner and lunch

menus. It's been a long time

coming. We've taken all your

suggestions into account along

with the limitations of our

kitchen. Some items were

removed, and new things added.

Don't get too upset if something you loved is no longer available. What we've

established is the opportunity to change the menu with the seasons (every three

months.)

There are now nine appetizers instead of four. We're also making great strides

in catering to vegetarians, vegans, gluten free folks, and pediatricians. I have

complete confidence that if you or someone in your party has food allergies or

restrictions, our service staff is now educated on the subject and we're happy to

help you navigate our menu with your diet.

In an area that has a reputation for fearing change, we're establishing ourselves

as a force of constant change. We hope that this constantly inspires customers

and staff.

New menus available online here, our website, Facebook, and Google.

'Preciate ya!

Michael & Angela

A Diamond-In-The-Rough…And Historic Too…Is Waiting For Someone Grape Hill in Wise Needs A New Location

I had lunch with Cathleen Turner of

Preservation North Carolina earlier.

As we were just about finished, she

asked me if I knew anyone with

available land in Wise. Well, that

brought my obvious question,

“why?” She mentioned that a

plantation home dating back to the

1830’s near Wise needed to be

moved (and eventually sold).

Here’s what they have to say on the

Preservation North Carolina

website about Grape Hill: (you

can also see plenty of great

interior pictures here)

“Built during the agricultural boom years of the 1830s, Grape Hill is an unusual

blend of sophisticated interior woodwork emblematic of Antebellum Warren

County architecture within an exterior of elegant simplicity.

Architectural & Historical Information

Grape Hill, Wise, 2017

Page 12: Chamber Connections - Warren Countywarren-chamber.org/newsletters/2017-08-09 Aug Newsletter.pdf · Chamber Connections ... Microsoft Office Training At VGCC 4th Annual African- ...

Built for the Joshua Davis Jr. family near Locust Grove, the seat of his parents’

plantation, it appears to be a simple two-story Federal-Adamesque I-house, but

on a much grander scale. Archival photographs show its original entry porch was

more Greek Revival in style with a pedimented portico supported by a Doric

entablature.

The tall five-bay façade with side addition accommodates two stories of nine-

over-nine windows, a molded box cornice, tall stone chimneys stuccoed and

scored to give a refined ashlar finish, all resting on a high stone foundation

under which is located a basement with summer kitchen and workspace.

The double-leaf entry doors lead into a wide highly ornamented hallway with tall

marbleized baseboards, heavily molded door surrounds with bullseye corner

blocks and a low wainscot. The stairway is located at the back of the wide center

hall and features a single-run stair with ogee bracket ends and marbleized

risers. The enormous main parlor shares similar woodwork to the center hall

including marbleized baseboards, low wainscot with a heavy band creating a

chair rail.

The highlight of the main parlor is a mantel which shares intricate detail with

some of the finest early houses in Warren County showcasing wide molded

engaged pilasters supporting a multi-paneled frieze topped by a delicately

carved lozenge band below the deep molded shelf. Both parlor mantels were

stolen years ago, but happily the mantel from the main parlor was recovered

and has been safely stored off site. The remaining first floor rooms share more

simplified versions of the parlor and center hall woodwork such as a low

wainscot, six-panel doors and a post-and-lintel mantel with molded detailing in

the side addition. Plaster walls and beautiful wide board wood floors can be

found throughout the house. The former gabled rear porch located at the back of

the center hall was enclosed decades ago and includes a bathroom.

Second floor details are fine yet predictably more modest and include simple

paneled mantels, six-panel doors, chair rails, and simplified version of the first

floor stair that continues up to two large attic rooms. The second story is also

divided by a stair hall with one large bedroom on one side and three rooms on

the other side of the hall. Much original paint remains on doors and trim (red

and blue-gray).

Grape Hill has been vacant for many years and has been used for storage for the

surrounding farm. The house must be moved or it will be lost to demolition. The

house appears to be very sturdy, but will require a complete rehabilitation once

moved to its new site.”

See plenty of interior pictures at the Preservation North Carolina website.

Computer-Aided Design Course Offered at VGCC Classes Begin 29 August Vance-Granville Community College has scheduled a “CAD with Solid Edge”

course, to be held Monday through Thursday, Aug. 29 through Oct. 24, from 9

a.m. until noon, on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. Grant funding

from the NC TechHire program can help eligible area residents pay for this

training.

Solid Edge is a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software program, produced by

Siemens PLM Software, which is used in a variety of industries, including

advanced manufacturing.

This course introduces students to basic three-dimensional solid modeling and

design software. Topics include basic design, creation, editing, rendering and

analysis of solid models, and creation of multi-view drawings. Upon completion,

students should be able to use design techniques to create, edit, render and

generate a multi-view drawing.

Solid Edge is a portfolio of affordable, easy-to-use software tools that address all

aspects of the product development process – 3D design, simulation,

manufacturing, data management and more, thanks to a growing ecosystem of

apps. Solid Edge combines the speed and simplicity of direct modeling with the

flexibility and control of parametric design – made possible with synchronous

technology. With Solid Edge, students can learn to create and print 2D drawings

from 3D solid models and send solid models to a 3D printer.

The instructor for the course is Peter M. Robinson.

Students may become certified through Siemens upon passing the credentialing

exam.

The cost of this course is $187 plus the cost of the textbook and the exam.

Page 16: Chamber Connections - Warren Countywarren-chamber.org/newsletters/2017-08-09 Aug Newsletter.pdf · Chamber Connections ... Microsoft Office Training At VGCC 4th Annual African- ...

The course is approved for funding through the NC TechHire grant that VGCC

received last year as part of a consortium of four community colleges. Area

residents between the ages of 17-29 may qualify for grant funding, which can

pay for registration fees, course fees, and certification fees.

Registration can be completed online at

www.vgcc.edu/schedules/occupational-extension-schedule. The deadline

to register is Aug. 22.

VGCC Recognizes 10 Medical Assisting Students at Pinning 4 August Ceremony Vance-Granville Community College held a pinning ceremony for its 2017

Medical Assisting program graduates on Aug. 4 at the college’s Franklin County

Campus in Louisburg, where the program is conducted. As VGCC’s program is

nationally accredited, the graduates are now eligible to sit for the American

Association of Medical Assistants’ (AAMA) certification examination to become

Certified Medical Assistants.

The ten graduates being

honored included Melissa

Bridges of Creedmoor; Dajané

Johnson of Henderson; Michelle

Beckwith of Kittrell; Melissa

Barreto, Shantel Blacknall,

Laketa Bumpers and Stephanie

Kearney, all of Louisburg;

Courtney Clark of Raleigh;

Kiara Fogg of Warrenton; and

Mirna Lopez Aguirre of

Youngsville.

Instructor Patrice Allen served

as the mistress of ceremonies.

Student Stephanie Kearney provided the invocation. Franklin County Campus

Dean Bobbie Jo May made welcoming remarks, congratulating what she called

“an outstanding group of students” and thanking their supportive families and

friends who had gathered to celebrate the graduates’ success.

Renita P. Timberlake, a graduate of the VGCC Medical Assisting program who is

now director of patient access for Granville Health System, served as the guest

speaker. She is also a pastor at Good Shepherd Ministries of Oxford.

“Today marks a great achievement in your life,” Timberlake told the graduates.

“You made it! Tomorrow and the days ahead will begin a new journey for you.

Now is the time that you can build upon the education and training you have

received here at Vance-Granville Community College. I believe that you are

prepared for whatever lies before you.” Timberlake said she was “a living

testimony” to the program’s preparation. She recalled that, years ago, she

started working at the front desk at a medical office and read a newspaper

article about the new Medical Assisting program being offered by VGCC.

Timberlake enrolled at the college, graduated in 2000 and returned to the same

doctor’s office but with her new credentials. She took on additional

Page 19: Chamber Connections - Warren Countywarren-chamber.org/newsletters/2017-08-09 Aug Newsletter.pdf · Chamber Connections ... Microsoft Office Training At VGCC 4th Annual African- ...

responsibilities and was eventually promoted to office manager. Four years ago,

she advanced to the position she currently holds at GHS. “You, too, can go

higher and soar in medical assisting,” Timberlake said to this year’s graduates.

“Medical assistants, as you know, we are the heart of health care. The thing I

like most about medical assistants is that we are multi-taskers,” performing

administrative, clinical and laboratory procedures. She encouraged the

graduating students to exemplify “excellence, compassion and commitment.”

Allen presented each graduate with her pin, signifying that each had successfully

completed the course of study and was prepared to enter the growing Medical

Assisting profession. As they were pinned, VGCC Dean of Health Sciences Angela

Thomas read reflections from the graduates about their educational experiences

and their career aspirations. Allen then led students in reciting the creed of the

American Association of Medical Assistants. VGCC Academic & Career Coach

Anthony Pope read an original poem that he had written just for the occasion,

entitled “Unleash the Power of your Soul.”

Dr. Levy Brown, VGCC’s interim vice president of academic affairs, rounded out

the ceremony with concluding remarks. “I wish you all the best as you enter a

rewarding profession of service, and as you meet a critical need for Medical

Assistants in our community and beyond,” Brown told the class of 2017. “You

have wisely chosen a profession in which you will make a difference in the lives

of patients, and in which there are a variety of career opportunities for you to

develop and grow. To maximize your opportunities, you must continue your

education. No matter what academic or career pathway you take, I know that

you will continue to succeed and make us proud as VGCC alumni.”

Steve Bridges, father of graduate Melissa Bridges, gave the benediction.

With their one-year diplomas in hand, many graduates are continuing their

education to complete the two-year associate degree in Medical Assisting. For

more information about Medical Assisting, call the Franklin Campus at (919)

496-1567.

Help the WCHS Class of ’97 Celebrate Their 20th Reunion Donations to GiveBackPacks

You never know where you’re going to uncover another treasure or worthy

cause here in Warren County…and Saturday gave me the opportunity to uncover

a great project. I met Rachel Perkinson Dickens, a graduate of the WCHS Class

of 1997. To help celebrate their 20th Reunion this year, instead of planning a

trip somewhere, they decided to give to their home County with GiveBackPacks.

Here are the pertinent details…

Did YOU know?

North Carolina has one of the highest hunger rates in America. More than 1 in 4

children in North Carolina struggle with hunger. Hungry children have trouble

concentrating, get sick more often, and are less likely to perform well on athletic

fields and in classrooms.

How CAN you help?

Join the Warren County High School Class of 1997 to reach our goal of packing

200 GiveBackPacks. Each GiveBackPack provides easy-open, ready-to-eat food

and school supplies. The packs will be distributed through the elementary

schools to Warren County children in need.

What DO you do?

● Follow the instructions provided to make a GiveBackPack

● Donate school supplies or food items and bring them to designated

drop-off locations.

● Make a monetary donation and let us put together a

GiveBackPack for you. You can sponsor one pack for $35.

● Ask your business, church, or community organization to get

involved.

How to Make a GiveBackPack:

Start with a backpack & add some of these:

● Glue Sticks

● Crayola markers

● Crayons

● #2 pencils

● Wide-ruled notebook paper

● Spiral bound notebook

● Erasers

And fill it up with these:

● Soup

● Dried fruit

● Peanut butter

● Whole grain cereal/granola bars

● Canned tuna, chicken, or beans
