2013 Membership DriveKicks Into High Gear

letter from the president October 2013

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the 100+ new members who joined the chamber during the recent membership drive!

Membership defines a Chamber and a chamber is a reflection of a local business community. With that in mind, here are a few characteristics about the membership of the Alamance Chamber.

Including the new 100+ members, the Chamber has 866 active members. The majority of our member businesses employ less than 10 people reflecting the shift to small business playing a larger role in our local economic base.

Our chamber is a countywide organization with membership coming from 19 area zip codes. However, the membership is geographically concentrated primarily within three zipcodes, 27215, 27253, and 27302 with over half of all members coming from the 27215 zipcode.

For purposes of our online membership directory, the membership roster is distributed among 25 general business categories. Those 25 categories can be further sub-divided

into over 150 individual business categories and there is at least one member in almost all of the sub-categories. Translated, this means we have a fairly diverse membership in terms of business type.

In welcoming our new members, I must also thank our existing members for their continued support of our community. Despite the last several years of a flagging economy, the chamber has maintained a membership level that has allowed the organization to continue its work in economic development, leadership and workforce development, and marketing Alamance County to visitors and tourists.

economic DEVELOPMENT

Incentives: Beyond the NumbersIncentives are always a lively topic in today’s world of economic development. The outrageous deals. The failed deals. The lost deals. Those are the stories that make the most interesting reads. In the September 23 issue of The Times-News in Burlington, Chris Lavender pulled together a story about seven companies entering into incentive agreements with Alamance County since 2009. Seven companies that have or will invest money, create jobs, and pay taxes in Alamance County. These seven companies have legal documents signed with the county to uphold their end of the agreement by making the proposed investments and hiring the number of employees projected. In exchange, over a period of years, the county pays the company a portion of their incentive until the total is reached, typically a 3- 5-year period. The chart below summarizes the Alamance County commitments to the various companies and the proposed investment and jobs by the company. The total amount of incentives, paid to the companies if they meet the proposed numbers, represents 2.4% of the total dollars invested by the companies in the Alamance County community. These companies, at their proposed investment levels, are estimated to pay tax bills of over $500,000 annually to Alamance County ($0.54 per $100 valuation). These seven companies have also projected to hire 549 people to work in their facilities. Alamance County currently has an unemployment rate of 9.2% (July 2013). Putting an additional 549 individuals to work could shave that number to 8.4% (all other factors remaining equal). If economic development incentives went away, Alamance County would have a great story to tell potential companies, and would continue to grow. The area has great transportation access, a skilled workforce, reasonable cost of living, a wide array of cultural and recreational opportunities, and so many other local and regional amenities to offer a potential employer and its employees.

Going PlacesThe CVB has recently returned from the quarterly meeting of the North Carolina Sports Association that was held in Cary, NC. Here we reviewed information for several upcoming tradeshows as well as conducting some association business. The CVB will also be attending several tradeshows in the next couple months. We will be in Colorado for The National Association of Sports Commissions Market Segment meetings as well as visiting with several Olympic National Governing Bodies to discuss future opportunities. In late October we will be attending the Rejuvenate Tradeshow where we will meet with meeting planners from across the United States. We will also be traveling to Salt Lake City for the Annual TEAMS (Travel Event and Management in Sports) Tradeshow in early November. Here we will meet we Sport Event Planners from across the county in hopes of getting them to bring their events to Alamance County.

Welcome Center VisitsIn early August the CVB visited 8 NC Welcome Centers located throughout the state. We try to do this once a year to say Thank you to all the Welcome Center staff members but we also use it as an opportunity to deliver any new printed materials that we may have, i.e. visitor guides, maps, attraction brochures, etc.

New Event for 2014The CVB is excited to announce the return of the Tar Heel National BMX event for 2014. This is will be the second National BMX Event that Burlington has hosted in the past 4 years. We are expecting approximately 1,100 riders plus families for this exciting event. The event will be held at the BMX track at Fairchild Park the weekend of June 20-22, 2014. A big Thank You to the Burlington BMX Parents Association as well as Burlington Recreation and Parks in their assistance in securing this great event.

Excellence in EducationThe 18th annual Excellence in Education awards program was held on September 4th at the Career and Technical Education Center, where this year’s Teacher of the Year was announced. Finalists, semi-finalists, and nominees were all recognized at the event. This celebratory occasion honored each of those recognized for their passion and dedication to teaching our next generation. Thank you to this year’s sponsors: American National Bank and Trust, Alamance Foundation and The Hayden-Harman Foundation.

Congratulations DeAnna Foust-Platt for being named this year’s Teacher of the Year! DeAnna teaches 6th – 8th Grade English Language Arts and Reading at Ray Street Academy. She sums up her philosophy of education in one word… passion, which she displays in every encounter and inspires in others. The Chamber wishes DeAnna the best as she moves on to regional competition.

Educator Appreciation ExpoOn Friday, August 23, chamber members helped area edu-cators celebrate the start of a new school year. Representa-tives from the local business, civic and nonprofit community participated in the Educator Appreciation Expo sharing valu-able discounts, information and community resources with area educators.

This event was a lot of fun and a great way to recognize the hard work and dedication of area educators. In addition to sampling foods from the Purple Penguin, Cold Stone Creamery, Texas Roadhouse, Chick-fil-A, and Umami Japanese Steak-house and Sushi, guests had a chance to win great door prizes including an iPad Mini (16GB WiFi) for the grand prize win-ner and a Smart Technologies SRP-PE-24 Smart Response 24 Remote Kit for his/her school.

Leadership AlamanceWelcomes New Members

The Chamber would like to welcome this year’s Leadership Alamance participants to the program. Just having finished up the two-day retreat held at Camp Caraway, this year’s 30 class members are now ready to go out and see Ala-mance County up close. They will begin their journey with a field day dedicated to our county’s history, discovering the past and what makes this place we call home so unique. The door to discovery has been opened, and we look for-ward to another exciting year of opportunity and adventure for the Leadership Class of 2014!
