As chair of the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce, I am pleased to launch our newly redesigned magazine. After 20 years of publication, it was time for a fresh, new approach. There has been considerable dedication, time and effort expended in restructuring our new magazine.
We have changed the name, the themes, the look and the focus to provide value to you, our business community. Our hope is that this magazine will become a resource to help you operate your business more effectively in an increasingly complicated world.
The theme for the premiere issue is technology and communications and when I was approached to submit an article on the topic, my initial reaction was “Are you kidding!? I am the furthest thing from being tech savvy.” However, after deliberating over this, I concluded that even I have many of the gadgets that are helping me in this tech savvy world. From my cell phone and netbook to my e-book reader and GPS, they have all contributed to my everyday life.
In today’s world, technology is a necessity that is mandatory to be efficient and effective in our day to day
business dealings. We have become dependent on instant results which are a direct result of the technology that is available at our fingertips. Take a minute to reflect on how much you rely on technology and what you would do if it wasn’t accessible to you.
Personally, my biggest challenge is to try and take advantage of all the options that come with the many gadgets I have. To be perfectly honest, I get a headache just at the thought of what all of my gadgets can provide for me together or separately. The one thing that I wish for, maybe someday, is that all of my gadgets will be able to speak to me and tell me how to program them.
It all comes down to the point that technology is here to stay, so you can either ignore it, possibly having it affect your business in a negative way, or you can embrace it. Choose to embrace it and grow your business.

It’s a very similar story to the battle between the iPhone and the Blackberry Torch 9800. The Apple iPad has taken the world by storm since its release earlier in 2010. With its

luxury, style, innovation, ergonomics, and originality, it is reported that the iPad may be the device that puts final nail in the coffin of the printed newspaper. Not to be outdone, RIM has finally answered back with the new Blackberry Playbook, introduced on September 27th. Both of these devices are becoming more popular and it’s certain that the competition will only become fiercer. It’s too early to tell which model will come out on top, but it is sure to be an interesting battle. If you are interested in just an e-reader, there are plenty of affordable options to choose from as well: the Kobo, Nook, Kindle, and Sony Readers are just a few of the favourites.
3. Digital Camera
While it would be great to be able to spend $500 or more for a digital camera, getting the most bang for your buck makes at lot of sense in today’s economy. Digital Trends reviewed a dozen digital cameras and Casio Exilim Zoom EX-FH100 was one of their top picks. “Casio is known for its ultra-thin point-and-shoots but they’ve broken new ground with their latest line-up of high-speed cameras. In the case of the EX-FH100 (starting at around $289) that means you can shoot action subjects such as kids playing soccer at 40 frames per second—light speeds faster than typical compacts.” A digital camera is especially gift-worthy for those thinking of taking a vacation this holiday season.

You can even record the entire lecture or meeting while you’re taking notes with the audio recording feature on the pen and upload that to your computer later.

Since GPS navigation tools became inexpensive enough for personal use, they have become wildly popular. The
Garmin Nuvi 3790 might still be a bit pricey for recreational use, at close to $500, but the maps are top notch and the Bluetooth calling function helps drivers keep their hands on the steering wheel, which is especially important with the introduction of laws regarding the use of cell phones while driving. Personal computers (Microsoft Windows vs. Macs), hybrid cars, flat screen TVs, and many more devices are evolving and booming into the technology market with increasing speed. Canadian Chamber Weighs in on the Use of E-Business SolutionsCanada is a world leader in many areas: energy, natural resources and the financial services sector to name a few. Unfortunately, there is a critical area where Canada has fallen from leader to laggard. While the availability of broadband internet across the country remains high, we have slipped internationally in ensuring our digital infrastructure is world class and, as a result, it has become more difficult to attract and keep jobs in the knowledge-based economy.
As part of the Canadian Chamber’s policy paper Mapping the Future of the Digital Economy: Key to Canada’s Economic Success that was released
last year, we are recommending that the federal government continue to work with the private sector to accelerate e-business adoption among small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and that the federal government creates a favourable investment climate that encourages foreign and domestic investment in Canadian e-business opportunities.
Without proper investment and dedication to information and communications technology (ICT), innovation, and protecting intellectual property rights, Canada’s productivity will be limited and other nations will continue to surpass us as a destination for both domestic and international business investment. Canada must take back its proper place as a world leader in innovation and invest in our future economic growth immediately.Given the current state of the economy, it is vital that the government allocate resources for investments in ICT to jump-start Canada’s economic recovery. While the 2009 federal budget provided for $225 million over three years for broadband internet, much more still needs to be done. By establishing a solid strategy, the government can provide businesses and Canadians in general with the tools they need to continue to drive growth, innovation and jobs in the digital economy.

Chamber Represents Local Interests on a Federal LevelThe Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce sent two representatives to attend the 2010 Canadian Chamber Annual General Meeting and Policy Conference in the Capital Region at the end of September. This annual conference is where local issues that are of federal concern are brought to the forefront, discussed, debated and voted on. Once accepted by the delegates, the policy is adopted by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and advocated for on a national level.
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce represents Chambers and Boards of Trade across Canada, who represent in excess of a combined 192,000 businesses, so when they speak on behalf of Canadian business the Government is there to listen. Many businesses don’t realize the impact a vote can have at the national level, but we were able to witness democracy at its finest, as the debates between East and West and province to province ensued on many of the issues up for debate.
There were 65 resolutions on the floor for consideration and many came down to a very close vote, especially on the topic of a securities regulation policy. A vote can make a difference and this year we wanted to make sure Alberta was well represented. Almost all Chambers in Alberta were represented by either delegates or proxy votes and we were pleased with Alberta’s strength at this national collaboration of delegates from coast to coast to coast. Alberta stood firm and united in its caucus, holding almost one third of the votes at the conference. The combined delegation held a total of 344 votes at the policy session with Ontario representing 124 votes, Alberta,101, B.C., 58, Quebec, 23, Atlantic ,18, Saskatchewan, 10, Manitoba, 6, N.W.T., 2, Yukon, 1, and Nunavut, 1.

Chamber Still Working on a 24 Hour CrossingFor approximately five years, our Chamber on behalf of our over 750 members, as well as the Alberta Chamber federation of 127 Chambers of Commerce and representing 22,000 businesses, has been presenting the business case supporting the
Government of Canada providing 24-hour traveler and commercial services at Wild Horse Border Crossing.
A bi-national committee made up of elected officials and representatives from the Medicine Hat and Havre areas has been urging its respective federal governments to expand both crossings to 24-hour commercial facilities.
A second 24-hour commercial crossing serving eastern Alberta and western Saskatchewan is absolutely critical for the facilitation and growth of commerce in this part of our country. It is even more important given the economic conditions facing us currently. We must do everything possible to remove impediments to the movement of goods.
The next meeting scheduled to address the next steps for the 24 hour border crossing will take place on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 and will include delegates from Alberta, Montana and Saskatchewan.

The Medicine Hat based Litebook Company was created in 1999, but the idea behind it actually stems back to the autumn of 1994 when Dr. Larry Pederson returned to Medicine Hat from California. He found himself becoming depressed, losing energy and focus, and went to a doctor to determine the cause of this drastic change in his life. The psychiatrist quickly determined that he was suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and offered to prescribe Prozac, an antidepressant. Fortunately, when he declined drug therapy, his doctor suggested light therapy instead, and the idea that would go on to become the Litebook Company was sparked. We interviewed Dr. Pederson in September about the Litebook Company, its origins, and what it’s like running an international business from Medicine Hat.
Q: When your doctor recommended light therapy to you, what was your reaction?
A: “Sounds like snake-oil to me!” was my immediate response. At the time, I was a complete sceptic. Even though I felt an instant positive reaction when I began using the light, I believed that it was only wishful thinking or a placebo effect and stopped using it. Since the symptoms reappeared immediately, I knew that it was helping and could change my life so I bought a light and began using it every day. I was so happy with how this was affecting my life that I began to talk to people about it and realised that there were a lot of people out there suffering in the same
way I had been.
Q: How did this discovery evolve into the Litebook Company?
A: The one problem I had was that the light weighed ten pounds, took up half my desk, and used 85 watts of power. It was not portable at all and I knew there must be a better way to get this same therapy from a smaller device. In 1999, I contacted an old classmate who was working at Suffield and through him I connected with some researchers who had recently read an article about the new LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology coming out of Japan. We were able to test out the LED’s to see if they would work for light therapy and began with a prototype that used 120 LED’s. I was the guinea pig and tested out our new device and quickly realised that there were way too many lights. They were astonishingly bright compared to the fluorescent bulbs. Over the years we tested different configurations, LED technology continued to evolve, and now our current model uses 24 LED’s and is about the size of a Sony Discman. It can fit easily into your purse or briefcase and the design is lightweight and portable.
Q: What is it like administering a world-wide enterprise from Medicine Hat, Alberta?
A: With globalization, the world is much smaller. The internet has connected people and businesses in ways that have changed the way we
do business. We can now reach each other and customers from anywhere. I am often asked how we can run such a large company from Medicine Hat, and it is due to the advent of the internet and the technology that allows for such easy communication in spite of the distance.
Q: What’s next for the Litebook Company?
A: Today, the unfortunate truth is that we are living in a light-deprived world and are paying for it with our health. We spend most of our time indoors and few of us get the amount of sunlight we need, especially in the winter when the days are so much shorter. We hope to continue our research into light therapy and to keep evolving our product into the best it can be.
We have a world-renowned scientific advisory board that is conducting research into the different illnesses for which light therapy might present an effective treatment solution. We hope that we will be able not just to help those with SAD, but also overweight and obese individuals, chemotherapy patients, depression and anxiety sufferers, and many more. I believe that there is a whole host of ailments that light therapy can help treat and with this research we may be able to provide something to bring relief and wellness to a wide range of people.
The good news is that researchers in light therapy have made great strides in recent years in understanding the impact of light on our health and wellness, and there is an increasing awareness among the general population about the importance of getting enough light. The possibilities are endless.

The Changing Face of Technology
Isaac Asimov
Science-fiction author Isaac Asimov popularized the notion of robots in popular culture when he wrote a collection of short stories on robots and first used the term ‘Robotics’. Asimov also wrote the ‘Three Laws of Robotics’, which defined the interaction rules between humans and robots: these rules define most fictional accounts of robots to date. However, with the evolution of technology, that which seemed relegated to the realm of fiction is rapidly becoming reality as technology advances and robotic engineering develops. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, a robot is “any automatically operated machine that replaces human effort, though it may not resemble human beings in appearance or perform functions in a humanlike manner.”
Machines and tools have given us the ability to do more in less time giving us more comfort in our daily lives. As technology advances, computers become faster and more powerful: these new machines are enabling us to do more in less time making our lives easier. With these benefits also comes a certain amount of reliance. This magazine copy was typed on a computer. It was emailed to various participants; layout was completed on a computer with specialized software and the printer used specific software and hardware to produce the publication for print. Without several different technologies, this magazine would not have been able to be produced.
Then and now…When children ask their parents about “what it was like when they were a kid,” the answer can sometimes feel astonishing. Looking back over the last 30 years, the depth and

breadth of devices and technologies that we take for granted today can feel overwhelming. Leading the list are items like cell phones, personal computers, personal GPS, MP3 players, flat screen TV’s. If one thinks a little further, CD’s, DVD’s, digital TV and even VCR’s make the list.
Cell PhonesTexting has become so embedded in our North American culture that even the new version of the children’s game Operation contains a disease called ‘phone finger.’ It is possible to watch a TV show or film from the 1980`s or 90`s and put a date to it based on the cell phone technology used. This shows us how sudden and pronounced these changes have been. Also, although many of us take for granted that we have instant internet access in our pockets, in addition to many other features, until recently, smart phones were much too expensive for all but business people with corporately purchased Blackberries.
New cell phones technologies such as the iPhone 4 and the Blackberry Torch 9800 continue to blur the boundaries between telephone and computer. Google’s Android technology is providing serious competition and every day there are new platforms being introduced.
TVsIt’s not so long ago that families had one black and white TV in their house with access to only a few local stations. Today, flat screen TVs are selling for a fraction of what they once were and digital video recorders are a staple in many homes. High definition televisions, channels and Blu-ray discs are becoming standard technology. Many movies are being release in 3-D, but Toshiba is determined to bring that technology into our homes. Toshiba is introducing a new 3-D television that does not require glasses to use. Presently they are only available in Japan, but are expected to enter the North American market in March 2011.
AutomobilesWith the advent of the internal combustion engine, combined with the assembly line innovation of Ford Motors Company, automobiles quickly became a facet of daily life that many North Americans cannot live without. Along with the development of smaller and faster personal computing systems, car manufacturers began to utilize technology to create more effective and functional vehicles. Currently, hybrid cars are entering the marketplace slowly but with with increasing frequency and in general, energy saving products are incredibly popular.
Even the traditional lightbulb is becoming obsolete as the incandescent bulb is being phased out in favour of the more energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL). These may not last very long considering the Light Emitting Diodes (LED’s) are even more efficient lasting up to 60 000 hours compared to the more modest 10 000 hours of the CFLs.
Robots in your home and workplaceRobots regularly perform tasks or jobs that humans find dull, dangerous or difficult. Robots can be adapted to a variety of duties either labour-intensive or mundane in nature including industry, medicine, farming, and even the military and space. The many varied benefits of robotics include such factors as increased health and safety, economic savings, and enhanced productivity. Robots are able to complete jobs that may be dangerous for human workers. They are also able to work a production line more economically and with greater precision.
Inside our homes we have many appliances and devices where “smart” features make our lives easier daily. The Roomba, a small robotic vacuum cleaner, has become a highly marketed success, completing a much maligned task with expertise. It can cover up to four rooms on a single battery charge

These helpful tools allow their customers to spend more time completing other tasks or enjoying time with loved ones. Toys for children are becoming more and more sophisticated using robotics. Using interactivity, these toys are providing entertainment for children in new ways and are often replacing other forms of play, and even aspects of their education.
Applications for unmanned systems span a huge variety of industries including agriculture, aquaculture, climate monitoring, communications, environmental, emergency, mineral exploration/exploitation, fire, fisheries, forestry, home and industrial use, law enforcement, mapping and surveying, security, transportation, and many more. CCUVS’s activities and services include: unmanned systems standards work, influencing research, applications and technology solutions development, training, provision of facilities (such as access to test ranges and UAS launcher services), publishing studies, consultancy, promoting civil and commercial use of unmanned systems and stimulating Canadian economic growth.
Unmanned systems, like other robots, are used in jobs that may be too dangerous for human workers or located in unhealthy or inhospitable locations. The automation can also complete work that many be too precise or repetitive for regular workers.
AutomationThe idea that technology is changing the way we view the world is not an entirely new concept. Neither is the fear that the automation of machines will replace human workers. In

January 1962, the magazine Popular Mechanics questioned if “machines and new technologies [will] replace workers of skill and knowledge?” This is a question that is still being asked today, especially with the increase in automated machines.
The assembly line developed by Ford Motor Company between 1908 and 1915 made assembly lines famous in the following decade. Under the leadership of Henry Ford, mass production by means of an assembly line was able to progress from a new concept to actual implementation and ultimately market exploitation. The means by which Ford`s motor cars were produced allowed Ford to maintain a lower price point and sell more goods to North American consumers. There had been many preconditions that had to exist for these developments at the Ford Motor Company which stretched far back into the 19th century: he was the first to build many large factories using the assembly line concept. The use of machines in the various forms of automation work under the same principles as Henry Ford utilized.
Many different institutions use automation, such as automatic checkouts, to increase productivity and reduce wait time for their customers. In Medicine Hat, locations as varied as grocery stores and the Public Library maintain the use of self-checkout machines to provide this increased service and ATM’s have been in general use at banking institutions for years. However, this does not always mean that they are employing less staff, only that the staff can be used in different ways to provide more timely and effective services to their customers. However, current automated systems still need human personnel to maintain and supervise the technological systems. There are still a high number of jobs that are in no immediate danger of automation and will likely never be machine driven. Human ability with language, pattern recognition and such has not been replicated by a
computer thus far and is likely far away from development. Customer service has seen much automation with these self-checkouts and tele-messaging systems, but the desire for social human interaction will maintain the need for most businesses to maintain a level of personal service.
In business, the technological environment will change as the trends continue to evolve; particularly in communication and information. The means by which companies communicate, including newer methods such as videoconferencing, will continue to become easier and more inexpensive. To be competitive and successful, business owners must keep abreast of the development of new technological applications and learn how to employ them in their operations. Employees must educate themselves and upgrade their skills to remain productive and integral to their workplace while employers must provide the opportunities for training and professional development.
Technology is changing so quickly and it can be easy to think that what we have now is the way it’s always been, but the fact is we are living in very exciting times technologically, and the picture is constantly changing very quickly. And what’s funny, what seems so modern and slick at the very moment will seem like ancient history to us in just a few short years.
It is change, continuing change, inevitable change that is the dominant factor in society today. No sensible decision can be made any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is, but the world as it will be.
