AUGUST

With the flip of the Calendar to August it’s shocking to find

myself already reflecting on the first half of my Presidency.

What I have tried to remain consistent in doing through the

first two quarters of my role as President is continually

consult the 2011 goals set out by the board at the goal setting

session in January. This is the most efficient and effective

way to ensure that the Chamber is heading in a positive

direction. There are adjustments that come with making

sure that we as a Chamber are following and achieving these

goals. I’m proud to be involved at such an important level to

ensure our membership gets the maximum value it deserves

continue setting a course whereby we can back up that

statement with tangible proof. If you want to be the “local

voice of business,” then collectively we have to prove this!

Most large businesses and not-for-profits have a Board of

Directors to help oversee the strategic direction of the

organization. Board members are committed to the success

of the business and contribute valuable skills and insights.

Board; then the Chamber staff can carry out that mandate.

From a Board, Staff and Committee level I can assure you we

are working tirelessly to fully map the way your Chamber can

best operate and support you.

The Chamber Board represents you, the members. Your

Board will continue to serve you in creating a realistic

strategic plan for your Chamber. We also want your opinion.

Therefore, I MORE than encourage you to fill out the member

survey contained in this month’s newsletter as well as various

other platforms within our Chamber communications

network. From this, we will gain valuable insights, stay

accountable and connected to you and help us stay focused.

We have the map. I look forward to meeting you along our

journey of positive change.

The Ontario Chamber would like your feedback on the Ontario Business Service Standard The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade is

currently seeking feedback from Ontario businesses on a

core priority of the Open for Business initiative.

Through the Open for Business initiative the government

of Ontario is working to address one of the most pressing

issues facing the business community - that of excessive

government red tape. The Ontario Chamber of Commerce

is striving to keep the priorities of its members at the

forefront of the government's agenda through

communicating their views directly to government

officials.

A major thrust of the Open for Business initiative is

improving business service standards. Government-to-

business services have traditionally been characterized by

inconsistent practices and procedures and unreliable

government assistance. The lack of transparent service

standards for business transactions with government costs

businesses valuable time and money.

The government has responded to the need for greater

clarity and consistency through the establishment of

service guarantees for critical, high impact, government-

to-business services. In December 2010, the new service

standards were posted on the Government of Ontario's

website.

http://www.ontario.ca/en/business/servicestandards/inde

x.htm

The standards represent commitments by 17 ministries to

improve the quality of business services and products.

To ensure that these standards respond to the priorities of

Ontario's business community, we are inviting members of

the chamber network to rate the Ministry's initiatives

using our online feedback form.

If you could take a couple of minutes this week to respond,

it would provide the OCC with valuable information to

assist the government in addressing the most significant

impediments faced by business. If you have any questions

you may contact Kelly Pritchard at 416-482-5222 ext 246

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) is pleased to announced the Ontario Exporters Fund. http://www.ontarioexporters.ca./

The Ontario Exporters Fund is intended to help small

and medium sized exporters (SMEs) better understand

their export capacity, develop export market access

strategies and thereby improve their ability to access

foreign markets.

The $500,000 Fund has been established as a pilot

program and builds on the OCC's family of export-

oriented programs for SMEs that includes the widely

popular Export Market Access program.

The Ontario Exporters Fund offers monies for two

specific activities:

• Conducting an export readiness assessment

(maximum Fund contribution $5,000)

• Hiring an export manager (maximum Fund

contribution $50,000)

Applicants may only apply for one funded activity and

the costs of these activities are cost shared 50/50

between the applicant and the Fund. Applicants must

also have a reference from the Ontario Ministry of

Economic Development and Trade. For more

information about the Ontario Exporters Fund as well as

application criteria and forms, please visit

Chamber Workshop Thursday, October 20, 2011 8:30 am—10:30 am DIRECT MAIL—DONE AFFORDABLE ~ with PrintFusion Inc. Innovation Park at 945 Princess

A well-executed direct advertising campaign can offer a positive return on investment as the message is not hidden with overcomplicated branding. Instead, direct advertising is straight to the point; offers a product, service, or event; and explains how to get the offered product, service, or event. This workshop will highlight the basic guidelines when using Addressed vs Unaddressed admail. Budget - Copy - type of piece options. Who, When, Where. Unaddressed: Understanding postal walks for choosing where and how many, while meeting Canada Post requirements. Addressed: Variable print on letters, postcards, envelopes that allow a tailored personalized message.

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce continues to provide our members and all of the business community with the best information on issues that have impact.
