WELCOME TO...SCARBOROUGHScarborough, with the distinction of being Britain’s first resort, is truly the Queen of the Yorkshire Coast and is one of the most popular seaside destinations in Britain with a huge variety of activities and attractions for everyone.
Scarborough and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce is proud to present this 2015 Guide which is divided into four clearly defined sections namely, ‘Shopping and Services’, ‘Where to Eat’, ‘Attractions & Events’ and a comprehensive list of ‘What’s On’ in Scarborough until the end of the year.
Each section is colour coded which is also reflected on the maps of Scarborough Town Centre and the surrounding district, which appear on the centre pages giving details of the location of the advertisers. The town has many leading high street stores as well as a wide selection of independent specialist shops to explore.
Why not take a break in one of the town’s extensive choice of cafés, restaurants or bars?, whilst in the evening Scarborough’s many pubs, theatres, cinemas, musical venues and casinos will offer you a warm welcome.
Our thanks are due to the many advertisers who have enabled this guide to be produced.
We hope you enjoy your stay.

WHERE TO EAT SCARBOROUGH 2015
THE SCARBOROUGH FISHING FLEET 2015
The Scarborough fishing fleet, though diminished due to EU regulations, remains defiantly vibrant. Individuals operating small vessels work crab/lobster pots locally, while larger boats, up to 10 metres, range between Robin Hoods Bay and Flamborough Head. Catches remain healthy and are mostly kept alive in holding tanks for export.
The trawling fleet, which has seen the greatest reductions now comprises of half a dozen under-10 metre craft and three larger vessels. The main species, cod and whiting are caught all year round, while haddock, plaice and sole are more seasonal. Bass, skate, turbot, brill, and halibut, though not a targeted catch, are often caught. The majority of fish landed finds its way to local hotels, restaurants and fish and chip shops though some goes to inland markets or abroad.
A seasonal langustine (scampi) and good stocks of scallops and queenies, attract larger visiting craft in summer. This shellfish is landed directly to refrigerated trucks for onward delivery to factories in Scotland. Scarborough harbour has seen many changes throughout its history but remains the town’s focal point. Its boats and men continue to challenge the elements.
Fred Normandale Fred is a founding member and former Chairman of National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations

Visitors to Scarborough already enjoy some of the cleanest beaches and bathing water in Britain.
In November 2010, however, Yorkshire Water, in partnership with arange of organisations, launched a multi-million pound programmeof work with the aim of turning Yorkshire’s beaches and bathingwaters into the best in Europe.
£50 million will be spent in Scarborough between 2012 and 2014 to improve the waste water pumping, storage and treatment facilities.
This is part of a five-year initiative to deliver environmentalimprovements along 50-miles of coastline, stretching fromWithernsea to Staithes, so ensuring that Yorkshire’s bathing waterscan achieve a new ‘excellent’ standard, due to come into force in 2015 as part of the European Revised Bathing Water Directive.

SUPER SEASON AHEAD FOR OLIVER’S MOUNT England’s only true Road Race circuit once again plays host to another action packed programme for 2015.
The first meeting of the season is the Spring National in April. This will be used by many riders and sponsors to try out their machinery for the Isle of Man TT. It is also a great opportunity to qualify for their mountain licence. Ace rider and now TV presenter Guy Martin, riding for the German BMW manufacturer, is anxious to build his own 600cc machine, which he will also be testing at Scarborough.
Car and Bike enthusiasts are well catered for with the Hill Climb events, which take place on 2nd and 3rd May and 16th August.
The event more aimed at families is the Barry Sheene festival on Sat 20th and Sun 21st June. One of the judges for the Saturday is the multi world champion Jim Redman who will be coming from South Africa.
July sees the annual Cock O’ the North meeting aimed at the Continental visitors as it just falls at the right time for their holiday period.
Rounding off the season will be the Steve Henshaw International Gold Cup Races – already advanced tickets are well over half sold so if you intend visiting please visit our website for information on ticket sales.

“Always a good night of entertainment, a lot of talented people, the shows are always of a first class performance. Reasonably priced too.”
We never get tired of hearing comments like these from audience members who have enjoyed a performance at the YMCA Theatre. Seating 290 people in air-conditioned comfort, the theatre boasts tiered seating giving an excellent view from virtually every seat, computerised light and sound and a welcoming atmosphere that puts audiences at ease.
The YMCA Theatre hosts a fantastic line-up of over thirty productions each year, including well-known musicals, variety shows, plays and pantomimes. The theatre’s reputation, gained over the past five decades, for staging top-quality and terrific value entertainment is well-deserved. This year’s line-up features some don’t miss shows, including:
Our House - The Madness Musical 9 – 11 April Follow 16-year old Joe Casey as his life takes two very different directions - a popular musical set to the incredible music of Madness.
Little Shop of Horrors 20 July – 27 August Who can’t love a show starring a man-eating plant?
Christmas Cracker 4 – 6 December A fabulous festive treat to get you in the mood for Christmas.
Family Pantomime 26 December 2015 – 2 January 2016 A traditional panto for the whole family to enjoy.
