Zak the Bear was walking to school onehot sunny summer afternoon. It was ascorching day, and Zak felt all the energy

drain out of him. Another half hour of brisk walking would get him to school. The sunblazed and Zak marched on, feeling more thana little sorry for himself.

Just as he walked into a slightly wooded area, his eyes chanced upon an amazing sight.Resting against a lone tree was a gleaming black bicycle. It looked brand new and there was noone in sight! Zak eagerly walked towards thebike for a closer look. It was his lucky day,

thought Zak, jumping up and down in delight.Since the bike seemed to belong to no one, should I just take it? Zak wondered.

He stood there for a bit, undecided, but thenhe gave in to both greed and need. With ahoop of pure joy, he jumped on the bike andblazed his way to school at top speed. Halfway

there, he stopped his bike and stopped to think. What if the bike belonged to someone atschool, he thought! He changed course andmade his way back homewards.

Once there, he quickly found a can of red paint

lying in the basement and gave the bike a newcoat of paint. He stood back and admired hishandiwork. Now the bike was truly his. WhenZak's mom Coco asked him about the bike, he

mumbled that he had borrowed it for a coupleof days.

Zak felt heavy with guilt as he never lied to hismother. It is true, he thought grimly, to hideone lie, one had to lie many more times.

The next morning, Zak rode grandly to schoolon his gleaming red bike. Soon his friends

surrounded him and heaped him with manycompliments.

What a beauty! exclaimed Mango theMonkey. "May I have a quick ride?

You are so lucky, sighed Lula the Goat. Ihave to walk to school every day!

Your bike is just so beautiful, sighedButtercup, the butterfly, admiringly. ThoughZak grinned widely, he felt sick with fear andguilt. What if everyone found out that the bikewas not his, but was in fact stolen property!

Zak decided to play truant from school the nextday. He left home at his usual time, waving acheery bye to his mother Coco. Instead of

heading to school, he rode around the town onhis shiny bike. He had the most amazing day, riding his bike quickly, then slowly and thentrying to spin a wheelie, balancing the bike on

    just the back wheel.

Before he knew it, he crashed on the road witha big thud, and hit his head on the hardpavement. His head spun and he was hurt all

over and huge tears of agony rolled down hischubby cheeks.

A crowd gathered around him. Lets take himto the hospital, said Bizoo the Deer.

Lets help him stand up, said Elmo the Cat.

Lets call his home, said Felix the Dog. Zak trembled with fear. What would his mom say if she found out that he was in fact loiteringaround instead of being at school?

Thats Zak, said Gigi the Crow, I know him;I will go get his mother.

Before Zak could say anything, the crow flewoff to go fetch Zaks mother. Zak had never seen his mother so angry. She was livid whenshe saw Zak fallen by the side walk and glaredat him.

Why are you not at school? she asked for the

hundredth time. Zak stayed mum. And tell mewho lent you this bike; I want to have a wordwith him too. Zak had no answers and all hedid was cry.

He was covered with bruises and hurt all over.To top that, he felt ashamed that he had lied tohis mother and was laden with guilt now thatthe bike was smashed. His beautiful day of

adventure had turned into a nightmare.

While Zak was resting at home, all his friendsfrom the neighbourhood and school visitedhim. Muff the Squirrel, Spark the Sparrow andTux the Dog all visited him. They also had aspecial gift for Zak, to make him feel better.

We heard your bike was smashed, said Muff.

So we all contributed from our pocket moneyand collected a tidy sum. Having said that,Spark the sparrow and Tux the dog rolled abrand new bike into Zaks room. Zak sat up inbed, his eyes sparkling! The bike was a gleamingred, brand new and beautiful.

Wow, guys, exclaimed Zak, clapping his

hands with joy. This is awesome!

But what about the bike you were riding?Who did that belong to? asked Muff.

I found it parked in the woods, said Zak.

And you just took it? said Spark, deeplyshocked.

You should always tell your parents when yousee an abandoned vehicle or bags," be it a car, amotorbike, or even a bicycle, so that they can

inform the authorities, said Tux gravely. Zak looked shamefaced, Yes, I know better now.

And you should not loiter here and thereduring school hours. Your classes areimportant! said Coco, his mother, as shestrolled into the room.

I am sorry, I have now learnt my lesson,

    said Zak.

Its ok, Zak, said his friends in unison. We allmake mistakes and we learn from them.

I have learnt my lesson the hard way, saidZak. I will never bunk classes again and I willnot take what is not mine, and if I seeabandoned bags or vehicles, I will tell my

    parents about it!

See you at school tomorrow, said his friendsas they were leaving.

Though Zak had had an accident that day, andhurt all over, he couldnt have had a better day.He looked forward to going to school on hissuper brand new bike!

Long ago, in ancient India, there lived a poor farmer called Somadutta in a villageBrahmagiri, on the banks of the Ganga.Somaduttas wife had passedaway at a young age, leavingbehind a daughter Saraswati. Thesimple and humble Somaduttawas of a helpful nature, and

    By Guruprasad Batni

was highly respected in the village. ButSomadutta was a worried man. His smallpiece of land just yielded enough crops tosustain him and his daughter. But whatabout the future and Saraswatis marriage.?

Saraswati grew up into a pretty young girland was the envy of every family in thevillage. Not only was she beautiful, but shewas also intelligent, talented, and helped thevillagers with various odd jobs. Boys andmen of various ages secretly desiredSaraswati and wanted to marry her.

One among them was Chatura Verma, the

wicked landlord of the village. Verma wasalready a married man and had a daughter asold as Saraswati. Knowing that his chancesof marrying Saraswati were slim, Vermadevised a clever plan to acquire her. In theguise of helping Somadutta, Verma lentSomadutta money, time and again, withoutcharging interest. The innocent and gullibleSomadutta assured Verma every time that hewould repay him soon. Verma, on his part,

kept telling Somadutta that there was no

hurry to repay, and he could take his ownsweet time.

Just when the loans had accumulated to suchan extent that it was beyond Somaduttascapacity to repay, Verma demanded all themoney back. A shocked and distressedSomadutta pleaded with Verma for moretime to repay. Verma flatly refused and calledfor the village Panchayat to mediate and helprecover his money.

The village elders heard both the parties, butcould not make up their minds. While theyfelt sorry for Somadutta, they did not want

to antagonize the rich Verma. Being aware of this, the wily Verma suggested a plan.

He pointed out to a heap of black and whitestones lying around. He offered to put ablack and a white stone in a bag, shake themup and ask Saraswati to pick one of them. If she picked the white one, her fathers loanswould be written off. And if she picked theblack one, the loans would still be written

off, but she would have to marry Verma. Theentire village was shocked byVermas insolence, even as

Somadutta protestedstrongly against it. Tohis dismay, Saraswatiturned to him and saidFather, since there isno other alternative,

we should agree to thisplan. Let us see what thefuture holds for me.While Somaduttacontinued to protest, adelighted Verma grinnedshamelessly.

Verma led the elders,Somadutta and Saraswatito a heap of stones,

into the bag to retrieve the stone inside.

Oh, this is black! he exclaimed. Its quiteclear then that Saraswati had picked up awhite stone earlier. The matter is closedthen! The villagers, who were fond of Saraswati and her father, and hated Verma, howled in delight. Saraswati hugged her father, who by now had tears streamingdown his cheeks. Saraswati gave a final look at Verma, and walked away holding her fathers hands. Verma looked like he hadseen a ghost.

For the rest of his life, Verma was a bitter andgrumpy man, and spoke very little. Whether he admitted it or not, he had understood abig lesson in life, on that fateful day: Onemust think twice before doing somethingcunning. Because sometimes, ones own trick can be played back to them!

looking for a black and white one. However, at the right momentwhen no one was watching,Verma picked up two black stones and dropped them intothe bag quickly. AlthoughSaraswati noticed this, there wasnothing she could do about it.Verma could always come upwith a new trick. She closed her eyes, searching for some idea, some clue, something thatcould defeat Vermas plans. After a few minutes, she openedher eyes. Apparently, she too

had a trick up her sleeve, as therewas a twinkle in her eyes now.

Saraswati picked up one of thestones from the bag, and as if byslip of the hand dropped it on theground quickly, among the heap of stones. Oh oh, how clumsy of me,she exclaimed! Verma, who had turned redwith anger, dropped to his knees and

rummaged through the heap, looking for thestone. Villagers scrambled around trying tohelp Verma. But how could one be surewhich was the stone Saraswati had dropped?

Saraswati then offered a solution. Why arewe struggling so much, my dear villagers?she asked. All we have to do is to look intothe bag again. If there is a white stone there,I obviously would have picked up a black one. And if there is a black one behind, Iobviously picked up a white one! So simple, right? The villagers applauded, relieved thatthey had found a simple solution to whatwas becoming a puzzle. Verma lookedshocked, and Somadutta was pale.

Saraswati quickly grabbed the bag fromVermas hand and handed it over to thevillage headman. The headman put his hand

    Probe ExplorerBy Surya Narayan Maurya

All the planets, from Mercury toNeptune, were joyously waiting.Probe Explorer spacecraft from Earthwas swiftly approaching them.

Earth had already told them that Probe hada powerful camera installed in it.

Probe, take my picture first. Only I havesuch a huge and beautiful ring, Saturn said, flaunting its spectacular ring.

I am the brightest planet of the solar system, so take my picture first, Venuspiped in with excitement.

Look Probe, I am the largest planet of thesolar system, so I should be photographedfirst, Jupiter came up with his own reason.

The other planets were not to be leftbehind in the race. They too praised their own unique qualities and asked it to taketheir snap.

Hey, stop all this nonsense. I am not ableto do my work properly, Probe was gettingperturbed by the irrational behaviour ofthe planets.

Who is stopping you from doing your work? We just want ourselvesphotographed, said Mercury, who hadbeen quiet until now.

Look, I have been sent to capturepictures of stars and galaxies only, Probeexplained and began taking pictures of afaraway star.

Probe is right. In the last 100 years, manypictures of you all have been taken. Even asmall child can search for your image on theInternet these days. Let Probe do its job,Earth defended Probes act.

All the planets agreed to what Earth saidand continued to revolve around the sun intheir orbits.

Probe was seriously immersed in his work. Ithad already clicked a galaxy and now hadspotted a shining star.

It set the focus to click a picture of that star when a huge mass came in front and hid thestar. The camera clicked the picture of thatmass instead of the star.

Hey, this seems to be something new,Probe was pleasantly surprised and instructed

his computer HTX 8311. HTX, send radiowaves towards that mass and send all thedata to the space centre on the Earth. If wehave made a new discovery, then our nameswill be etched in history for the generationsto come.

HTX collected all the data with a lightningspeed, but had worry on its face the verynext moment.

What is it, HTX? Why are you lookinganxious? Probe asked.

Probe, I have calculated the data of thatrock and

And what does your calculation say? Probeinterrupted HTX before it could complete itssentence.

This huge rock is going to collide with theEarth after 39 hours. As it will come closer tothe Earth, its speed will escalate, and thecollision will happen in still less time, HTXelaborated.

Now it was Probes turn to get tense.

Time is running short. HTX, dont send any

  • 8/12/2019 Champak Jun12

    18/60

information regarding this rock to the spacecentre, else the entire world will panic. First decide whether this rock will really collidewith the earth.

Probe, I am a supercomputer. This rock isdefinitely approaching the Earth. You can see

its graph if you wish.Probe saw the rocks orbit graph and wasconvinced. Oh! This will certainly collidewith the Earth.

When Probe called all the planets and toldthem everything.

They were stunned. Earth was the worst hitby this news.

Of all the planets, only Earth has life on it.If it is destroyed, our entire solar systemwould become lifeless, Saturn said.

Why are you saying such negative thingsalready? The rock is still far away. It is near Uranuss orbit. It has to cross Jupiters orbitand the asteroid belt. When that rock will

collide with the small planets, itwill break down to pieces,Mercury said angrily.

No, Mercury, the asteroids are sotiny in comparison to the rock thatthey wont affect the rock.Nonetheless, your suggestion isgood. If Jupiter and Mars block theway of that rock, it will break down. However, it is difficult toascertain the impact of thatcollision on these two, HTX said.

We dont care what would happen

to us. Earth is our dear sister. If wecan help in any way, then well bevery happy, Mars nodded in

    agreement at Jupiters words.

These planets cant come in the way ofthat rock, but we can, HTX said showingthe graph.

    K E I T H

  • 8/12/2019 Champak Jun12

    19/60

What? All the planets, along with Probe, were astounded.

Unless we collide with the massive rock inhigh speed, we wont be able to do anythingto it. There is still some fuel left in the fueltank. The energy from the solar panels canbe used to burn the fuel so we can give asideway collision to the rock. If we aresuccessful in changing the route of the rock by even a one degree angle, then it will takea detour from the Earth, HTX explained indetail.

Now there was a ray of hope.

Probe took the picture of that shining star which he had been trying to take at first. Then he turned towards the planets.

Friends, forgive me. I had refused to click your pictures. Saturn, pose with your ringand give a nice smile. I have to send abeautiful picture to the space centre, Probesaid, setting the focus of its camera again.

After that, all the planets got clicked one-by-one. Probe sent all the pictures to the spacecentre and then HTX sent the solar energy tothe fuel tank.

As expected, the asteroid belt couldnt harmthe rock. It had crossed the orbit of Marsand was coming towards the Earth withalarming momentum.

After exactly 10 minutes, Probe Explorer collided with the rock with a very high paceand broke into bits.

The rock moved from its trajectory by an angleof 5 degrees and moved away from the Earth. The courage and sacrifice of the ProbeExplorer had saved the Earth from impendingdoom, protecting the lives of its inhabitants.

N eha loved to visit her maternalgrandmothers house during her vacations. Feasting on delicious foodprepared by Granny, playing and sleeping;these were the only activities which formed apart of her daily routine there. Last year her Uncle had gotten married during her vacation. So this year Neha was excited to spend her holidays with her new Aunt. Wow, it would begreat fun! She was thinking. Her younger brother Bholu was also eager to visit Grannys

house in anticipation of the funthey would have there.

    The day arrived when

they boarded the trainwhich movedspeedily towards theserene mountains of Dehradoon. Bholuand Neha werehappy to meet their new Aunt. And they

had heard from Momthat she was an expert in

    making scrumptiouspizzas and burgers!

Bholu was thinking of asking Aunt to make

noodles for him asthey were his

weakness. Both brother and sister had their mind stuck on mouth-watering delicacies madeby their Aunt. Meanwhile, their Mom took outpoori and potato vegetable for them to eat.Bholu made a bad face at the look of the food.

Mom, you are so old-fashioned! Neha spokeout her thoughts. Couldnt you bring pizzasfor us?

Nehas Mom smiled sheepishly, We dont getingredients for pizza to prepare it in our city. They have the ingredients in Dehradoon.

It was all fun in Grannys house. Bholu and

Neha had a sound sleep at night. Now they hadthe entire days to themselves. They would sleepuntil late and then bother their Aunt andGranny the whole day with their endlessdemands. Nehas Mom would sleep after having a meal, but Aunt would either paint or do beautiful crochet work on clothes. Momwould ask her to sleep, but Granny wouldinterrupt by saying, You sleep. Dont worryabout her. She doesnt sleep in the afternoon

and keeps herself engaged in some work.Neha and Bholu noticed thisand instead of wandering idly, began being

around their Aunt all the time. Sometimes they

would open up paint bottles for her andsometimes bring water for her to dip in her paint brushes.

Neha would wash the paint brushes andkeep them clean. Aunt would be completelyengrossed in her art while painting on thecanvas. When she would do crochet work,Bholu and Neha would help her withthe thread.

One day Bholu expressed his desire to Aunt,Aunt, I too want to paint like you. Neha said,And Aunt, I want to make beautiful laces withcrochet like you. Ill put them on my frocks.

Their interest in her craft made Aunt veryhappy. She agreed immediately, Yes, Illdefinitely teach you, but it will be a gradualprocess. You will also have to eat greenvegetables. Ill make pizzas and burgers only onSundays. Neha and Bholu looked at eachother and nodded in agreement.

The next day the children were waiting keenlyfor their afternoon time with Aunt. Neha evenhelped her in preparing food and Bholu inlaying the table. After lunch, both the childrenwere ready to help Aunt and learn somethingnew from her.

While everyone else went to their respectiverooms for their siesta, Aunt took out some oldboxes. She had papers, cards and glue whichshe gave to Bholu and Neha. Bholu was askedto cut the papers according to the size of one of the boxes, and Neha was required to stick themon the boxes with the help of glue. Bholu andNeha were given brushes to paint on the boxesusing their favourite colours.

When they had done the work as directed, abeautiful holder was ready. Aunt said, See!Your holder is ready. You can keep your pens init, colour pencils or even make it a spoon standfor the kitchen. Isnt it useful?

When everybody was up in the evening,Bholu and Neha showed off their holderto Granny-Grandpa, Uncle and Mom.From then on, Bholu and Neha wouldspend every afternoon with Aunt. Somedays they would paint an old bottle tomake a vase and some days they woulddecorate an old cardboard box with lacesand pearls to make a jewellery box for

Granny. Neha had learnt crochet work andhad made a beautiful lace for her frock.

The excitement of learning new things hadbrought them closer to Aunt and they wouldeven help her in other chores. Playing in theharsh sunlight had stopped and this had led toGranny breathing it easy.

The vacations were getting over now. When itwas time to leave, the children were very sad.Their Mom hugged Nisha Aunt and said,What a positive change you have brought inmy kids! This time they have spent their vacations in learning new things rather thanwasting time.

Yes, Aunt, this time our vacations had becomevery colourful, Neha said. Nisha Aunt huggedand kissed both the children with affection.

dog as a gift. It was a very cute dogwith brown fur. Monu named hisdog Dollar.

Monu and his parents loved the dogvery much. The dog was very happywith its new masters. Monu startedplaying a lot with Dollar. WhenMonu left for school, Dollar used to

accompany him to the bus stop.Monu fed Dollar after returningfrom school and they both played

cricket in the evening. Also, when

Monu did his homework, Dollar satnext to him reading Champak.

Dollar had read a few detective seriesfrom Champak and was fascinated bythem. He thus thought thatbecoming a detective would be veryexciting and wanted to try it outatleast once.

And one fine day his wish wasgranted. Monus mother couldntfind her gold chain. She, along withMonu and Dollar, searched for it ineach nook and corner of the housebut still couldnt find it. She then

recalled Ramia, their maidservant, and said to Monus

father, I think Ramia hasstolen the chain.

How can you be sosure about it?asked father.

night, I had kept it on the table inour bedroom. This morning when Iwent for a walk, Ramia had enteredthe bedroom for cleaning and must

    have robbed it then.

To this, father said, We are not sureif Ramia has stolen the chain.Without proper proof, we cannotaccuse her. You should search for itin the house again. It may have beenmisplaced.

Dollar was silently listening to thisconversation and decided to find outif Ramia was the culprit. He peepedinto the kitchen and saw Ramiawashing the utensils. He grabbed thisopportunity and thought of searching for the chain in Ramiashouse. He put on his detective hat, wore black glasses and proceeded

    towards her house.

Ramia stayed in the servantsquarters opposite Monus house. Themain door was locked and Dollar gotin from an open window at thebackside of the quarters. He woregloves on his hands and carefullysearched for the chain everywhere

but did not find it.Hence he was sure thatRamia had not stolenit. Dollar thus returned

    home.

But that was notall; Dollar was

determined to findout who had stolen the chain. Hekept on thinking about the ways inwhich he could do so and finally afantastic idea struck his mind.

He took a 500-Rupee note fromMonus mother and kept it on thebedroom table at night. He hidhimself behind the door and kept aneye on the note while everyone elseslept. Around midnight, Dollar heardsome murmuring sound. He quietlypeeped into the room and was

stunned to see Latku and Matku, thetwo naughty rats chattingwith each other.

  • 8/12/2019 Champak Jun12

Latku said, A 500-Rupee note! We

can nibble at it with ease.Matku replied, You are absolutelyright, Latku. The gold chain that wetook yesterday was so hard that Icouldnt nibble at it and now mytooth is paining because of that.Lets take this note away and keepthe gold chain back here.

To this Latku said, Dont be foolish,Matku. The current gold rates are sohigh that if we sell the chain in themarket, we will get lots of moneyand can enjoy life to the fullest.

Latku and Matku took the 500-rupeenote and were leaving when Dollar

jumped onto the table and caughthold of both the rats with his strongpaws and said, So you both werethe culprits who stole the chain.

Latku and Matku tried hard to freethemselves. Hearing all thiscommotion, Monu and his parentsgot up from their sleep. Dollar saidto them, These are the thieves whohad stolen the chain.

Monu and his parents were shocked

to see the rats. The rats said, We arereally sorry. We shall return your chain right away.

Dollar then asked Monus father,Now what punishment should weimpose upon them?

To this father said, We will put them

into a rat-trap and free them intothe jungle.

Monu immediately got the rat-trap,put Latku and Matku into it andreleased them in the jungle.

Monus mother was very delighted toget her chain back. Everyone in the

house praised Dollar. From that day onwards, Monu andhis friends started calling Dollar Detective 007.

Dollar was also glad that his wish of becoming a detective was fulfilledand that he got a new name.

Mosqui the Mosquito was consideredvery intelligent amongst all other

mosquitoes. He was believed to havesolutions to almost any kind of problem.

One day, he met his friend Tosquiwho seemed to be weak and feeble.

Mosqui asked, What is wrong withyou Tosqui? You look ill.

To this Tosqui replied, Yes my friend,I am becoming weaker day by daybecause I am at the verge of starvation. These human beings havestarted using mosquito nets throughwhich I cannot pass and thus dont getto suck their blood. That is the reasonwhy I have become so thin and weak.

Do not worry Tosqui, said Mosqui,I have an idea to solve this

    problem.

We mosquitoes try to get intothe mosquito net at night whenthe human beings sleep inside itand we fail to get through. In

the afternoon, these humans donot use the net and thus it is

open. From now onwards, you getinside the net in the afternoon andhide in there until the night comes.

When the humans fall asleep at night, you can feast happily on their blood.

Tosqui was convinced with the ideaand decided to implement it. After afew days, Mosqui met Tosqui and wassurprised to see Tosqui healthy andhappy like before. This was becauseTosqui had implemented Mosquis

idea and it was successfully working.Tosqui then thanked Mosqui for thatidea and moved on.

That day onwards Mosqui becamevery well known for giving effectivesolutions for all sorts of problems.

Several mosquitoes started coming toMosqui with their problems andwalked out with wonderful ideas tosolve their problems.

One evening, a mosquito calledLosqui approached Mosqui with aproblem. Losqui said, When thehumans are asleep and I suck their

blood, they feel a painful sensation of my bite, get up from their sleep andstart scratching themselves. Is there away by which I can suck their bloodwithout them feeling any pain?

Mosqui thought for a minute andsaid, Oh! That is not a problem atall. Chloroform is available in every

hospital. Chloroform works likeanaesthesia and one does not feelany sensation of pain. Before bitinga human being, you dip your

proboscis in chloroform. After that, the human being will not feel anypain and you can suck as muchblood as you want.

Losqui loved the idea and headedstraight to the nearby hospital to fetchchloroform. He dipped his proboscisin the bottle of chloroform and

started to move towards his target.

But before he could bite a humanbeing, Losqui himself fell unconsciousdue to the effect of chloroform.

He was lying unconscious in themiddle of the hospital when an elderlymosquito noticed him. He quickly

lifted Losqui and took him to a safeplace. After about two hours, Losquiregained consciousness. By this time,Losquis family members and friendshad reached there to see him.

Mosqui was also present there andwas feeling sad about Losquiscondition. The elderly mosquito

then said to everyone present there,Now that you all have witnessed theresult of practicing Mosquis vagueideas, I request each one to not ask Mosqui for any kind of suggestionsfrom now on.

Mosqui felt sorry and decided never to give any ideas to anyone.
