MARCH IS LITERACY MONTH– Engage Literacy

It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations-- something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own. - Katherine Patterson

Rotary International has stressed the importance of Literacy to Rotarians by establishing Literacy as a special emphasis on Rotary's ongoing commitment to promoting literacy and numeracy by designating March as the Rotary Club Literacy month. Literacy is about people's ability to read, write, speak, listen……and understand. Total Literacy will be possible only when it becomes a people's revolution.

Combating illiteracy has been a focus of Rotary International since 1986 - and for good reason. UNESCO estimates there are 862 million illiterate adults in the world and about two thirds of them are women. Millions more are functionally illiterate, without the reading and writing skills necessary for everyday life. Functional literacy is about people having adequate skills to function well in a literate society. The United Nations has identified illiteracy as a major obstacle to economic, political, and social development.

In March, Rotarians are encouraged to raise awareness of literacy issues and to organize literacy projects at home and abroad. Highlight successful literacy projects in your club/district or increase awareness of the area's literacy needs.

TRUSTEE CHAIR'S MESSAGE - MARCH 2014Inspire locally, grow globally.Since its inception, Rotary has striven to do the greatest good it can, wherever it can. L o c a l c l u b s w i t h i n a n international organization have meant that Rotary projects have both local and

global effects. But as Rotary looks ahead, and as The Rotary Foundation builds on the groundwork that already has been laid, we acknowledge the need for new, creative ways of addressing problems. Many clubs here in America provide dictionaries to schoolchildren, for instance, and this is a wonderful way to encourage and support literacy. But are dictionaries the best use of money, in a time and place where students are more likely to look a word up

online? What other projects could support literacy in a way that will make a greater and longer-lasting difference? Some exciting partnerships developed between clubs and other organizations during the pilot of the Foundation's new grant model. One that I am fond of is a collaboration that two Rotary districts in California and Uganda f o r m e d w i t h t w o n o n g o v e r n m e n t a l organizations in Uganda. These districts used the new vocational training team structure to send Rotarians and other professionals to Nkondo, where they helped establish a clean water system and a trained health clinic staff. The local government was so impressed, it also pitched in.Vocational training team inspired a partnership with a Ugandan NGO that provides microfinance training and oversight,

and another one that works with farmers to produce crops at a higher yield. Rotarians from Kenya and Uganda traveled to District 5340 in California to learn about sustainable agriculture and irrigation, as well as good business practices. In this case, our Foundation was able to provide service that not only meets the needs of a village but empowers and inspires local groups in ways that only Rotary can.Rotary always has engaged in strategic partnerships with other organizations and governments around the world. If it weren't for our global partners, the eradication of polio still would be just a dream. But as we implement our new grant model, strategic partnerships that take advantage of Rotary's global reach at a local level will become even more central to our success.

Earliest known instance of women's participation in Rotary

History Might Have Been Different. Other than Jean Harris, the earliest k n o w n i n s t a n c e o f w o m e n participating in Rotary activities occurred in 1911, with the founding of the Rotary Club of Belfast, where it was customary for members to bring their wives to a monthly meeting. Stuart Morrow, who was a member of the San Francisco club, started the Belfast club. In the first year of 1912, the club's Board of directors discussed the advisability of electing women to membership or allowing them to attend weekly luncheons.

The club records of that period indicate the board considered it undesirable to elect women to membership or have them at the weekly luncheons. What is not known is whether that decision was impacted by the possible admission into the National Association of Rotary Clubs. It was not for another 80 years after the founding of Belfast, in 1992, five years after the U.S. Supreme Court decision and three years after Rotary changed its Constitution at the 1989 Council on Legislation, that the first l a d i e s w e r e f i n a l l y e l e c t e d t o membership in the Club.

Had the Belfast Club admitted women in the summer of 1912, Rotary might have changed its policy when Dublin and Belfast were admitted, and the U.S. Supreme Court would never have had to render a decision.

A debate in Rotary has been going on for over a hundred years. Read what the Rotarian had to say in March 1914.

In March 1914, Straw Hat Day was observed by the Rotary Club of San Diego where all Rotarians marched on the streets wearing huge straw hats.
