• Chandigarh is a well planned city known all over
the world for its architecture planning and
landscaping. The Master plan of the City beautiful
Chandigarh was prepared by a Swiss-French architect
Le Corbusier.
•It is a Union Territory of India, which serves as
capital of Two North Indian States, Haryana &
Punjab.
•The City was named after the mother goddess of
power Chandi , whose temple Chandimandir is
located in vicinity of the site selected for the city.

Chandigarh: A Green City
• The greening is an integral part of Urban Planning in U.T., Chandigarh. Tree
plantation along avenues, open spaces, green belts and around building complexes
are enthralling features of the city.
• A number of beautiful avenues with conspicuous tree species, well wooded forests
along the periphery of city, ‘Sukhna lake’ against the backdrop of Lake Reserve
Forests, green belts running across the length and breath of the city and a
beautiful ‘Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary’ on its periphery, further enhance the
ecological, environment and aesthetic richness of the city.

Greening Chandigarh Action Plan (GCAP)
• The Chandigarh Administration comes out with Annual Greening Action Plan every year .
• This GAP prescribes plantation targets for various stake holders like Govt departments , NGO s, Educational Institutions, Residents Welfare Associations(RWAs), Eco Clubs etc. and strategies to achieve the desired results by synergizing efforts and inputs of all stakeholders
• Greening Action Plan generally prescribes about 2-2.5 lakh saplings plantation every year and achieves it successfully.

Chandigarh : A Model Solar City • Chandigarh has been selected as the Model Solar City and the
master plan was approved by Ministry of New & Renewable
Energy (MNRE), GOI in Feb 2012.With an aim to achieve the
target of 50 MW by 2022.
Chandigarh has taken a leading Position among all solar cities of
the country by installing about 15 MW Grid tied Rooftop Solar
Plants on 305 buildings of the city as on 30th Oct,2017.
Chandigarh has already generated 24.62 MU of solar energy
on the rooftops of Govt. buildings in last 4 years which is
equivalent to reduction of 16,998 MT CO2 and in turn is
equivalent to planting of 18.41 Lac trees which is a big
initiatives under Climate Change Action Plan

Chandigarh was bestowed with Two National Excellence
Awards in 2016, one for becoming Number one Solar city of the
country in terms of Roof top Solar Capacity installation and
another for becoming top performing State Nodal agencies for
Renewable Energy among UTs & special category states.
The Solar City Initiatives of Chandigarh has also been
included in the “Innovation Category” of Country’s Top 62
Innovation Story in Public Services which was released on 21st
April on the occasion of Civil Services Day, 2017 by Hon’ble
Prime Minister of India
Expected Outcomes
UT Chandigarh has prepared the “State Action Plan on
Climate Change” and is determined to develop Chandigarh as
environmental friendly and sustainable smart city with
decreasing carbon footprints.

Initiatives taken to promote Solar Power in Private Sector:
• CREST has empanelled Large nos of EPC Contractors for
installation of rooftop Plants and 30% subsidy as provided by
GOI shall be released to the consumer if they get it installed
through any on of the.
• CREST has launched an online portal:
www.solarchandigarh.com wherein any regulatory
clearances including subsidy can be obtained online by any
consumer as part of Ease of Business.
• UT Chandigarh has recently notified amended Building
By- laws to make Solar PV Installation mandatory on all
buildings in U.T., Chandigarh above 500 Sq yard Plot size to
promote the Chandigarh as a Model Solar City
