PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Thursday 01 September 2016

Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers

COLLEGE DRAMA - A HUGE SUCCESS On Monday evening I had the opportunity to attend the College drama, “I Spy.” The play was written and

produced by the students under the tutelage of Mr Holder. I enjoyed the play and being able to see the gifts

and talents our drama students have but would otherwise go unnoticed if they did not have this opportunity.

Well done to everyone. Please see the full review written by Dr Claire Hills on the College website.

MUSIC ASSESSMENT EVENING Last Thursday, our music students performed the second of their concerts. It was, as usual, an enjoyable

evening with the music students being able to showcase their talents through their performances, and at the

same time, entertain us. The seniors were able to complete their assessments for NCEA Music. The

performances are always of a high standard and I would encourage parents, guardians and caregivers to go

along and enjoy the music. Our jazz band played recently in Martinborough and were singled out and con-

gratulated for having performed extremely well.

OPTION EVENING

Option Evening is on Wednesday 14 September. Parents, guardians and caregivers of current Year 10, 11 and 12 students need to come to the evening to help their child/children select their subjects for next year.

This is a very important evening as our teachers, careers staff, deans and senior managers will all be

available to talk to and provide advice and guidance for the selection of courses for 2017. UCOL staff have

also committed to be on hand to provide advice to students in the selection of their subjects for future

reference. The evening begins at 6.00 p.m. in the AV room with a presentation especially for Year 10 families wanting to know more about NCEA. Following this, we move to the Hall where the staff will be

available from 6.30 p.m. to help answer questions and to provide guidance in selecting the most appropriate

courses for 2017.

The course selection guide will be available on the website from Wednesday 07 September under

“Curriculum”, then go to “Year Level Course Booklets.”

SPORTING SUCCESS

1st XI Boys’ Football

Congratulations to the Chanel Boys’ 1st XI who beat Kuranui 2-1 in the final of the Division A Secondary

Football Boys’ competition. It certainly was a game worthy of the final. Well done to the team. We are very

grateful to Kelvin O'Reilly and Phil Logan for guiding the team this season. Thank you.

Congratulations also to the Boys’ Development Team who secured third place in the Division B Competition

with success in a penalty shoot-out against Makoura.

1st XI Girls’ Hockey – College Grade Champions

The 1st XI Girls’ Hockey Team are to be commended on this fine result. The

season did not start well for them with it taking a little while before the team

settled and a pattern of play developed. However, as the season

progressed the team went from strength to strength, running out convincing

winners of the College Grade final, 8-1.

Thank you to our parent coaches, Maxine Nielsen and Jodi Hart, as without

your guidance, care and the time you both put into the team this fine

outcome for the season may not have been achieved.

Congratulations to the Chanel College Girls’ 1st XI who finished 1st in Division 1 of the Inter-collegiate Girls’

Football league. Well done to the team who worked so hard throughout the competition to gain this fine result.

DEBATING The Debating Team have had a very good season. This is the first time we have had a team in the Wellington

debating competition and for us to reach the semi-finals is a great effort. The team lost their semi-final against

Hutt International Boys’ School who will meet Wellington College in the final. The finalists are the only teams we

lost to during the competition and so finishing third equal with Tawa College, is a fine result.

Congratulations to the team who was made up of Sion Madden and Jarrich Grey, who debated each week with

support from Tayla-Cade Gerard, Luke Hempleman and Kenta McKelvie. Thank you to Mrs Miles for coaching the students.

ART SPLASH Twenty Year Seven and Eight students travelled to Wellington to the Michael Fowler Centre. The students were

part of a mass choir of 500 students from across the Wellington region. The choir was well received and our

students enjoyed the opportunity to be involved. It was reported by Ms Geange and Mrs Boderick that the stu-

dents were impeccably behaved throughout the trip. Once again our students have made the most of the op-

portunity to be involved in an event outside the Wairarapa but they have shown we can foot it with the city col-

leges. Well done to all involved.

FORTNIGHTLY REPORTS The table below records the latest round of the fortnightly reports with the top and most improved students in

each year level being acknowledged. I congratulate all the students who have worked hard to achieve this

recognition. Well done.

God bless.

MUSIC ASSESSMENT CONCERT

Our music assessment concerts are always entertaining and challenging.

Last Thursday, the students’ performances were both professional and contrasting in style. The junior students

practised hard to have their pieces performable and our senior students worked hard to gain credits for NCEA

performance music.

There was the professionalism that comes with being involved in extra-curricular activities such as jazz band,

choir, cultural group and liturgy band. We also had our junior recorder and string groups performing. The

choir is going from strength to strength and so is our jazz band.

The maturity and insight that our students presented at last week’s performance, was truly magnificent and

deserves all the praise and accolade that we can give.

Well done to all of our musicians.

Look out for our next showcase - Chanel College Extravaganza.

Ms Wensvoort or Ms Pender.

STUDYLINK Students thinking about further study after leaving school have a lot of decisions to make. StudyLink’s

website is a great place to visit to get them thinking about what it will cost to live and study. Once students have

made the decision to study it’s a good idea to sign up to receive emails from StudyLink. This way students won’t

miss out on important information, like when to apply and documents that they need to send. Students and their

families are encouraged to check out www.studylink.govt.nz

Thursday 01 September 2016

As quite a few teams are finished or are heading into the last round of

competition, Chanel would like to take this opportunity to thank all the

coaches, managers and supporters for assisting with the Chanel teams

this year.

We really appreciate all the time and effort you put into helping our

students!

Thank you very much.

Castro who have been selected into the New Zealand

Years seven and eight

Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers

We are now over halfway through the term and this week we have begun a new unit of work titled “Called to

Serve Others”. It integrates Religious Education, reading, writing and social studies and is centred around

the basic tenet of the Catholic church, that as Catholics, we are called to serve others. We will focus on the

issues of child slavery, poverty, child soldiers, human trafficking and gender inequality which will lead us into

Social Justice Week in Week Eight. Please engage in conversations with your child around these topics at

home.

The end of year camp is rapidly approaching. Please remember that if you are making payments towards this

online, you need to refer to ‘camp’ so that your payment is channelled in the right direction.

Yesterday, twenty of our students, accompanied by Ms Geange and Mrs Boderick, attended Artsplash at the

Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington. They sang a collection of songs, along with five hundred school children

from throughout the Wellington region. Their behaviour was impeccable and they acted as fabulous

ambassadors for our school.

Congratulations to Emily and Charlotte Murray who were baptised today at Saint Patrick’s Church. May you

both walk in God’s ways with love, peace and joy from this special day.
